Firewire 800 is choppy on proxy media, USB 2.0 not...

Hello dear apple community,
i am new to FCPX and have a strange problem playing proxys in the timeline and video viewer. I import my AVCHD 1080/50p clips from SD Card directly to my external WD My Book Studio FW800 2TB drive. Options: create Proxy, playback option also selected. The playback is very very choppy, although the data rate is about 4MB/s. I benchmarked my drive and it has a throuput of over 70MB/s r/w over FW800 and about 37MB/s over USB 2.0. Then i tested the USB 2.0 cable, just plugged FW off and USB in. Restarted FCPX and... the proxy plays almost perfect, only a minimal to no choppyness. A little test with a proxy file on my system SSD ends in absolutely smooth playback.
How can it be? I am completely lost, where is my benefit of using a FW800 drive. Or is it a FCPX failure/bug?
System:
MBP mid 2009, Core2Duo 2,26
8GB RAM
64GB SSD
Latest Mountain Lion, fresh and clean just installed over night...
P.S.: ProRes422 (optimized media) and proxys are played smoothly with quicktime player, no dropped frames.

You should not need any drivers.
How did you obtain the numbers you quote (70MB/s, 37MB/s)? Did you actually run an utility on YOUR mac to get these values or did you read them somewhere (perhaps in the drive documentation)?
It may be that the FW cable is flakey. I suggest you run the free BlackMagic Disk Speed Test (available at the Mac App Store) and see if the values you get are similar to the ones above. If not, especially for FW, then there is something wrong with either the cables (more likely) or the FW interface in either the drive or your mac (less likely).

  • How do I use my iMac's Firewire 800 port to connect to my external hardrive using a USB Micro-B input?

I have a late 2009 iMac with Firewire 800 input on the back.  I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive with USB Micro-B input that I would like to connect to the Firewire (4 USB inputs aren't nearly enough on the iMac). I can't find an adapter to do this. Can someone please help??  As an alternative, is there an adapter that will convert the Firewire 800 to standard USB2.0?

USB and FireWire work in very different ways, so there is no adapter.
Instead, you should just get a USB 2.0 hub, like this one
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
There are many choices, but be sure to get one that is powered (it comes with its own power supply).  Cheaper hubs rely on the computer's USB port for power.

  • Can i use my firewire 800 port with a usb adapter?

Can i use an adapter in the firewire 800 port to convert it to usb?

Yes, Their are some on the market, but I don't know how well they work.

  • USb 2.0 or Firewire 800 FASTER?

I have a Quad G5 with 8 gigs RAM. I want to buy an external drive (LaCie) and notice the USB 2.0 is 100 cheaper than the triple inetrface. Is USB 2.0 slower or the same as Firewire 800?
It was my understanding USB 1.0 and Firewire 400 were the same transfer rate and USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 are the same rate?
However, I see specs stating that firewire 800 is much much much faster?
    Thnaks everyone.

USB 2.0 has a data transmission rate of 480Mbps, while USB 1.1 transfers data at 12Mbps; real-world transmission rates for USB 2.0 will be slower than FireWire 400. FireWire 400 and 800 have a transmission rate equal to the number in the term. Basically, FireWire 800 is much faster then USB 2.0. See this page for more information.

  • How to connect an external harddrive with firewire 800 to a macbook with firewire 400?

    Hello,
I just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.
    I'm glad for any advice.

  • Time Machine won't mount Firewire 800 drive after restart / Finder crashes

I've been having problems with Finder crashes. I first suspected Spotlight might be the problem because sometimes when I started typing a search, it would display the first 3 characters and then lock up. I could force quit the Finder, but it wouldn't relaunch and required the computer to be shutdown and restarted with the power button. Once restarted, I had no keyboard and no mouse click (the mouse would move across the screen but I could not click on anything). After waiting several minutes (3-5) the mouse and keyboard worked properly.
After some research suggested the Spotlight index might be corrupt, I forced Spotlight to rebuild the index (add the drive to the exclude list under "Privacy" and then remove it from the list) and then repaired disk permissions. After that Spotlight was noticeably snappier and I thought my Finder crashes had been solved until........
Part 2: I have been using Time Machine (connected to a Fantom GreenDrive via Firewire 800) for several months now and ever since the beginning, I have noticed that the drive will NOT mount after a restart. I must turn the drive off and back on again to get it to mount. After that Time Machine picks it up and seems to work fine.....well, that is until this Finder crashing thing started several weeks ago. Anyway, I inadvertently set up an experiment last weekend when I installed some software update and forgot to remount the Time Machine drive after the restart. That was last Sunday night. The computer did not crash all week long. I thought my Spotlight fix had finally solved my problems, but now it seems I was wrong. This morning (Saturday, six days later), I noticed my Time Machine drive was not mounted. I mounted it, told Time Machine to "Back Up Now" and went away for a few hours. When I came back the Finder was locked up.
So guess my question is this: Are there any know problems with using Firewire 800 with Time Machine? and What can I do to fix this? In the meantime I'm trying another experiment - I've disconnect the Firewire 800 connection and replaced it with USB.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Not in general. Some drives don't always wake or "spin up" fast enough; often that's seen when the system wakes from sleep, though, not so much after a system Restart. Many Western Digitals do that; I don't recall seeing any posts here about yours, but you might want to search the forums for Fantom
In the meantime I'm trying another experiment - I've disconnect the Firewire 800 connection and replaced it with USB.
Good plan - that may provide a clue.
Also, check with the maker -- there may be a firmware or driver update.
And try verifying your internal HD, and repairing your backups, per #A5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Either might cause that.

  • No Firewire 800 on my PB

    Greetings!
I just purchased a 250GB external hard drive (Iomega Black series) so that I can back up data,etc.. It has one USB 1.1/2.0 port, one Firewire 400 port and 2 Firewire 800 ports. My PB only has 2 USB ports, one Firewire (which I assume is 400 because the PB is about 4 years old), and the obvious Ethernet port, etc.. Is there a way for me to be able to use the Firewire 800 port on the external drive? I'm not too dumb when it comes to computers (upgraded my RAM...), but I'm not a techie either. Any suggestions would be appreciative! Thank you in advance.

    Hi t,
You are correct, you do not have FW800 on a 4 year old PB. You can purchase a PCMCIA to FireWire 800 card (google for it) which will plug into your PC card slot and you'll have a FW800 connection. One example is from LaCie; it has 2 FW800 ports and 1 FW400 and sells for about $75.

  • No Firewire 800 after upgrade to 10.7.4

    Hi All
I have a mid-2007 iMac (upgraded to 4GB RAM and 2TB HD). I have a Freecom Quattro Dock which allows me to hot swap hard disks, and it's connected to my iMac via Firewire 800. I use it to backup my internal HD.
I backed up my iMac HD and then proceeded to upgrade from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 which appeared successful, but now my iMac cannot see the disk connected to the dock via the Firewire 800 port. The dock has USB 2 and Firewire 400 connections, and it works fine via Firewire 400.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

That's why I mentioned both. Sometimes installers muck up low-level settings.

  • Why can't I use proxy media?

I've got media from 3 cameras - all are 720x480.  Two were imported from camcorrders, one was miniDV and one was JVC hard drive (SD).  When importing I did not have the option to create proxy media, and still do not have that option available (it is grayed out).  The third was imported from an avi file uncompressed; it created proxy media when importing.  I am trying to use them in a multi-cam clip.  If I use proxy media, the two clips from the cameras show the red/yellow "Missing proxy" screen but the avi file shows fine.  If I select "use original or optimized media" the clip from avi drops frames, either with "better performance" or "high quality" settings.  I know I've had it playing back OK before, but don't know what I have changed such that I can't get a good playback in the multicam multi-angle viewer.  It seems if the camera video is already coded so it doesn't need proxy media, it should use that format when proxy is selected (I'll make that suggestion on the feedback from).  Any help would be appreciated.

The problem is AVI is not a native format to FCPX while DV is. And FCP X will not make DV into Proxy for this reason. So if you want to mix AVI with DV you need to do it in 'original' mode. For better performance what you'd want to do is convert all of the AVI to a better format- like ProRes for example then import that as your new originals for mixing with the DV footage.

  • Daisy-chain Firewire 800 versus USB

Hi.  I have an external drive (drive A) connected to my MPB via Firewire 800.  I have my iTunes media library on this drive (movies, TV shows, music etc).  When I watch a movie on my Apple TV, the content is being streamed from this drive via my MBP to the Apple TV.  This works fine.
I also have a second external drive (drive B) that I use only as a back-up for drive A.  I use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up drive A onto drive B.  I can connect drive B in one of two ways: Option #1 is to connect drive B directly to my MBP via USB (USD 2.0). This is how I currently have it connected.  Option #2 is to connect drive B to drive A via a Firewire 800 cable, daisy-chaining the two drives.
    Two questions:
    1. Which option will give me better performance when backing up drive A to drive B?
    2. If I am watching a movie on Apple TV (streaming from drive A) at the same time that I am backing up drive A to drive B, will option #2 affect streaming of the movie?
    Thank you

Have you Shut down your Mac and disconnected your firewire cable from both ends and let it sit about ten minutes then reconnect and try. Also, it is important to disconnect the AC power to your Mac, this helps to reset the FireWire port(s).
Have you checked to see if Disk Utility sees it/ can mount it?
Do you have TechTool Pro or DiskWarrior, both of which you could use to try to mount it.
It is also possible that you have a bad cable or a bad port, do other FW devices work?

  • New Firewire 800 External Hard Drive and how to use old External USB Drive

    Hi All,
I have a new LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk hard drive 500 GB - FireWire / FireWire 800 / Hi-Speed USB / eSATA-300 on the way, when it arrives I plan to use it as my Time Machine Backup drive with the FireWire 800 connection. I am currently using a Seagate Free Agent USB 2.0 320 GB external drive as my Time Machine disk. The reason for upgrading is the USB drive is slow slow slow! I am not concerned about the data on my old drive and will just wipe it clean using Disk Utility. What I would like to do is use the old drive to archive iTunes 7.7.1 and Aperture 2.0 music and photographs. Can someone give me an idea how to go about doing this?
    Thanks!

Hi, yes that will copy the whole iTunes..including everything in iTunes..BUT, as you add to your iTunes on the Main HD, with the ext HD I think you will have to manually update anything added. Or dragNdrop the whole thing again.. You could also locate you iTunes music Library & just copy that across..With images once again find your iPhoto library & just copy that across..L

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Time Machine fails to backup HD and stalls computer when backing up to external HD (Western Digital WD5000MT) when using Firewire 800 but works fine using USB

I have a mid 2012 MBP (MacbookPro9,1) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I start a Time Machine backup to an external Western Digital HD (WD5000MT) connected using a Firewire 800 cable, my open programs stop responding and in general my computer freezes up not allowing me to open activity monitor or the console utility.  I can't even shut down or restart my computer and must hard boot to reset.  Though removing the firewire cable that goes to the external HD can sometimes get my system working again.  However, the WD external HD also has a usb port and when I connect it to my computer via a USB cable, Time Machine seems to backup my system fine without stalling my computer.  This same external HD worked fine with Firewire 800 using my old late 2007 MBP running snow leopard.  I should note that my brother has the exact same model WD external HD and he also had issues with the firewire port on his MBP running mountain lion.  I have run the disk utility checking for disk/file permission errors and the drive itself seems fine.  I initially formatted that drive as ExFAT but while troubleshooting reformatted to HFS+ and still had the same issue.  I tested using a different firewire 800 cable but still had the same issue.  Can't think of anything else to do.  I don't have another firewire-compatible device to test if it is the HD vs the firewire port.   I would prefer to use the firewire port for quicker transfer speeds but I'm stuck with USB for now.  Any suggestions?

  • Iomega eGo 2TB USB/Firewire 800 drive not working with Time Machine.

The drive I had for Time Machine died and I replaced it with an iomega eGo 2 TB USB/Firewire 800 drive. Time Machine finds it and backs up the disk when I first boot up but then it seems like the drive goes off line. At that point, when Time Machine tires to back up it can't get the drive to respond and my system hangs. To fix that, I turn off the iomega that fixes the hang up and I get the disconnect without ejecting warning.
I ran disk utility and disk warrior. Both apps reported the disk is fine.
Can any tell me what's up? I'm running OS X 10.7.2
    Thanks.

I am having this exact same error with my new iMac 21.5" connected to a brand new Iomega eGo 2 TB Desktop Firewire 800 External Hard Drive (Mac Edition - 34796).
The TimeMachine backup works fine, but as soon as the iMac goes to sleep and wakes back up, TimeMachine doesn't respond well to any commands and all sorts of errors appear on the screen.
I will try the tip here from Kappy and report back later if this works for me.
Kappy, one thing to note is that I'm using the Firewire connection from the iMac to the eGo and experiencing this problem.  The eGo has its own power supply too.
