FireWire 800 - Not Mac Compatible?

Hi there,
Recently, my sister's 13" MacBook Pro had some hard drive issues and long story short, she bought a new drive to fit in the MBP.  Luckily, I managed to snag a complete image of the drive to copy onto the new, larger drive.
To do this, I was just going to use a FireWire 800 cable and target disk mode to copy the image back to the drive through Disk Utility but I don't own such a cable.  Cheapest and simplest one I could find was on eBay here;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIREWIRE-800-to-800-9-Pin-to-9-Pin-Cable-Lead-/2006249 78688?pt=UK_Computing_FireWire_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2eb62e3b00
First thing that struck me is that it mentions "Not Mac Compatible".  It's only the sake of a few pounds but I don't want to end up getting this cable, waiting on delivery and finding it not working.  I have an older 800 to 400 cable that I never seemed to get working either, so I'd rather not chance it.
I consider myself rather computer savvy but cannot fathom why the cable wouldn't be "Mac compatible"; a cable is a cable, right?
(I understand some cables have circuitry in, ala Thunderbolt, but wasn't aware FW does/did).
Am I being dumb here or is the guy just playing me for a fool?
- Jamie

According to the manufacturer website - "These cables are designed to be 100% compatible with Apple Firewire."
If you really want to know the compatibility of the cables, call the manufacturer - http://homeavcables.com/32033-15.html

  • Is firewire 800 on mac mini 2010 faster than sata2 ?

is firewire 800 on mac mini 2010 faster than sata2 ?

No. SATA at its slowest is 1.5 Gb/s while FW800 is 800 Mb/s. SATA is available on some Macs at 1.5, 3.0, or 6.0 Gb/s depending on the model and when it was made.

  • Firewire 800 not running as expected.  VERY slow

Ok so this is my first post here. I looked all over google and various places but cannot find out whats going on (im also not very computer literate so please bear with me!). Heres my deal:
I am a musician working with garageband and I have always been recording to my internal drive until recently. I was unaware until I read some posts here from the good people like you guys, that that is not a good idea to record to your internal drive. So, I got an external firewire 800 drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DGZ05A) and this cable (http://www.amazon.com/2M-Firewire-800-9PIN-Cable/dp/B000XQILWK/ref=pdbxgy_e_imgb). When I received it, I first used disk utility and reformatted it for Mac OS Extended Journaled. Then I proceeded to move a couple sample libraries and my entire "Garageband" folder (with my saved songs in it) to the external. I instantly knew something was wrong. The files were taking forever to get written over. It took about 15 mins for a 5GB folder to be moved over. I was already discouraged. Anyway, I plugged in the USB cable that came with the external and tried moving the same files and it was MUCH faster. The same 5GB file was moved over in a matter of minutes.
I then tried recording to the drive (using firewire again) and it would hardly even PLAY the song without stopping every couple seconds (too many effects error, and yes ALL the tracks were locked). Tried to record as well and i'd get even less time before garageband would stop the song with the same error. So I disconnected firewire and went USB. Thru USB the song didnt stop once, not on playback OR recording. Then I moved the songs back to my internal and played them (and recorded) with no problem either. So what gives? I cant figure out if I'm doing something wrong, or if my external HD is bad? Or the cable is bad? Or maybe the firewire port on my mac mini is bad (i've never used it before for anything other than this external drive). Or i'm thinking maybe my processor isnt strong/fast enough to record to the external firewire drive? Im working with a mac mini 120GB internal HD and the 2ghz intel core 2 duo with only 2GB ram (i know thats not ideal for recording and im planning to upgrade at some point, but i have been recording to the internal just fine with the RAM i have now and never had a problem until trying to record to the firewire drive). I was going to go out today and get a new cable and see if that was the cause of it. Anyway sorry for the book-length post! But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advance
P.S. this is my first post so im sorry if I should've posted this in a different category.

    Hi,
Are you using an audio Firewire 400 interface (daisy-chained through you external FW800 HDD) ?
I've same problem (mac mini June 2010) so I think it is a compatibility problem between the mac (perhaps only with mini) and some recent Firewire chipsets found in external HDD. I read somewhere that Apple does not support anymore PLX (that acquired Oxford) chipsets for external HDD connected to Mac Pro.
I tried then using the Sonnet Yin Yang adapter (to avoid daisy-chaining), however it is the same :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13360117#13360117
The problem does not happen when daisy-chaining through FW400 (from the audio interface to the HDD).
Using the external disk only (FW800), I get up to 60 Mbyte/s sequential write and up to 70 Mbyte/s sequential read (that is using xbench - in memory read, you shouldn't try between two disks as the slower will be the limiting factor). My external HDD is a WD Caviar blue so it also helps.

  • HT5299 Thunderbolt-Can you use an  adaptor From a thunderbolt External drive to a firewire 800/400 Mac

Thunderbolt-Can you use an  adaptor From a thunderbolt External drive to a firewire 800/400 Mac

No. The Thunderbolt to Firewire adapters only work to connect a Firewire drive to a Thunderbolt port. They do not work in reverse, to connect a Thunderbolt-only drive to a Firewire port. If the only port your drive has is a Thunderbolt port and all you have on the Mac is Firewire, you can't use that drive with that computer.

  • Disk on firewire 800 not recognised until disk on firewire 400 powered up? Any solutions?

I have a Seagate Freeagent connected to firewire 800 and a Maxwell Onetouch connected to the firewire 400. The Seagate is not recognised until I power up the Maxwell but if I power up the Maxwell during before the power up of the seagate the Seagate again is not recognised. The Seagate is the designated Time Machine disk. Also when sleeping (but not always) the Seagate is dropped and I get a "dosk not demounted " message on waking. Any solutions known to these mounting problems with the firewire connections? Thank you.

I am answering my own problem. Install Lion! Problem has been solved. I always thought it was an OS problem. Good news.

  • Digital recorders are not Mac compatible are they?

I see digital recorders frequently, but have yet to find one that is Mac compatible. Does anyone know of one, or are you still using tapes?

    Hey John,
Not too many out there, I agree. The only one I could find is pretty darn high end. The Olympus DS-2300. However, at $250, its got a pretty steep price point. But, its got a lot of features and seems pretty nice. Hope this helps!

You need a PDF editor, at the high end use Adobe's Acrobat Professional, at the low end use the editing features in Preview (pre-loaded on your iMac). However you should probably look at the Mac App Store, you will find many of PDF editing applications. You simply need to find one that suits your needs.

  • Firewire 800 not powering OWC 100GB HD

My brother and I recently purchased an OWC 100GB hard drive with firewire 800 and usb 2.0. My hard drive is working perfectly, being bus powered through firewire 800. However his computer isn't powering up the hard drive. We both have the same laptop, powerbook 15' 1.5 ghz w/1gb ram. I plugged his external hd into my laptop and it powered up just fine. It seems the problem lies with his laptop's firewire 800 port. I repaired permission, checked system profile and it shows the firewire 800 port, and reinstalled the os x update 10.4.6. We also plugged in the supplied ac adapter for the external hd and it did work with his laptop. Has anyone had trouble with the firewire 800 port now powering devices? Everyone's help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try resetting your power management unit (PMU), directions are at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 That can sometimes fix that type of issue.

  • Firewire 800 not being recognized?

I just got my new MacBook Pro a few weeks ago, and realized that the firewire 400 I have wouldn't work in it... so I got a new one, and was so excited to begin editing some movies - and now my camera won't properly connect. I have a Panasonic, if that matters at all.
I also tried going into iMovie with it to see if it would recognize it, and it doesn't. Every time I try to connect the built in iSight camera comes up instead. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do? I even tried changing up the type that it imports with, but it always says "Unable to initialize video deck. You can still use capture now." but again, it only uses the built in camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions of things to do to fix it...?
    Thanks a lot! :]

Alternatively, you can use your old FW400 cable if you use a 800 -> 400 adapter
like one of these to connect your new Mac to your existing cables:

  • HP monitors not Mac compatible?

    Hi all.
This has come up before (http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10776106) and in other forums. You plug an HP monitor into your MacBook Pro (I'm using DVI) and the screen periodically flashes blue, but there's no recognition of the monitor. I'm using an HP 2159m.
    What gives?

Just to leave a not-so-related solution here if anyone searches for "hdmi problems with HP 2159m."
In case anyone has an overscan issue (blurry text, underscan adjustment doesn't help, etc.) using the Mac Mini HDMI port, the solution is weird but simple.
Turn on your Mac and plug in the monitor and the image is crappy.
    Turn off the monitor.
Press and hold the monitor's power button until the image shows up.
Try it a few times if it doesn't work. It works like a charm for me.
Thanks Apple for removing the "disable overscan" option from the display panel for PC monitors.

  • Firewire 800 not working

    Hello.
I have an old(ish) Sony camera, which uses MiniDV. I just want to upload my videos to my new (2012) Macbook. I purchased the appropriate firewire cable, which seems to have plugged in perfectly to the firewire port on my computer, and into my camera, but my Macbook does not recognize it's existance.
    Help!

Is resetting the FireWire bus still a recommended procedure? If so, how?
I've looked at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338 AKA http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1151 and don't see any instructions on how to reset the bus. In the section entitled "Check System Profiler for hardware Issues" it says "Also try resetting the FireWire bus" but the link just points back to the same page.

  • Are certain websites simply not mac compatible?

I have had a mac for the last 4-5 years and have had only one issue in the past, which turned out to be easy to fix. However a new one is starting to crop up in that I have found that certain websites are windows and IE only. Is there a way around this? This has only occurred to me on three sites, unfortunately two of them happen to be pretty important. I would like to stay away from windows and IE as much as possible, nor do i wish to put either on my mac.

    HI,
From the Apple Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Advanced tab. At the bottom of that window click: Show Develope menu in menu bar.
Now from the Safari Menu Bar click Developer/User Agent. Try one of the options there. This function only applies to sites for IE only.
Microsoft stopped writing IE for the Mac years ago. In order to run IE you would have to install Windows with BootCamp that creates a partition on the startup disk and install anti virus software on that partition.

  • Firewire 800 vs 400 for Migration Assistant

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to move stuff from my old iMac, which has Firewire 400 ports to my new iMac which has Firewire 800. I bought a cable that has one plug type on each end, but it seems the two iMacs can't 'see each other' using this cable. Also, if I connect my external LaCie hard drive (which has both)to my new iMac using this cable, it doesn't mount, although it will using a USB2 cable. This isn't an option for Migration Assistant. Any ideas?

Well, either the cable is bad or your firewire port is bad. Firewire 800 is backward compatible to 400. Try on someone elses mac. If it works on theirs, then your port is suspect.
