Firewire and Camera failing in 15'' MBP

I have a 15'' MBP with 10.5.4. Recently, my external FW drive stopped being detected when I plugged it in. If I plug it in via USB, its fine. A quick of System Profiler shows:
FireWire
FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Further checking in /var/log/system.log shows LOTS of:
Sep 6 23:25:24: --- last message repeated 5 times ---
Sep 6 23:25:24 gentoo kernel[0]: FireWire GUID ffffffffffffffff is invalid!

Now, today I realized my camera seems to be shot too. Photobooth shows an image of a camera with a line through it and System Profiler doesn't show the camera at all. I'm starting to think I may have a bad system board. Thus far I've done the following:
Booted to Safe Mode, then rebooted normally.
Did a PRAM reset with CmdOpt+PR
Did an SMC reset per the Apple instructions.
None of the above worked. In fact, I'm using GeekTool to watch the system log and all I'm seeing are these firewire GUID errors repeatedly. After Googling a bit, I made a backup folder on my desktop and moved all of /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWire* to it, then rebooted. Doing so resolved the errors in system.log at least (and sped up boot time and shutdown time), but obviously didn't fix the problem. It just made the messages go away as the drivers aren't being loaded. And my system no longer sees a firewire networking device, though this is definitely expected.
Has anyone seen this before? Am I looking at a trip to a Genius Bar to get the board replaced? Everything else seems to work fine. I didn't buy Apple Care, but I've only had the laptop since December of '07, so I'm under my one year warranty. I'd really prefer to not have to have it sent it. I'd prefer a s/w fix or something similar if possible.

First thing to do is reset the USB chip set on the mother board. Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes the ports to do stuff like detect when a device wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac) & REMOVE THE BATTERY. Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now plug the power cord back in, reattach the battery, & start up the Mac. Now plug in accessories/hard-drives and see if your USB ports are any better.
Best of luck!

  • Firewire and camera Canon

    hi , my iMac 20'' with iLife '08 bought in december 2008 can't see the Canon MV400 camcorder ( I use the firewire 6 pin to mac and 4 pin to camera ; I have 2 port on my iMac: FireWire 6 pin and FireWire 800);
on a Mac+iLife '06 of my friend the camera works without any drivers . why not in my new iMac??
Canon have no driver for device.
    please help me!!!

    Hi Jouly
appart from the Canon camcorder, do you have other peripherirals connected to your mac through firewire interfaces ?
I have a old iMac G5, and a canon Camcorder too. I had the same behaviour you've described when I was trying to connect an external hard drive and the camcorder at the same time .
Each was connected to a separated firewire (400) plug. When disconnected the external hard drive, it went okay again
    Cheers

  • How to connect a firewire camera (XL1) to a MBP w/ no firewire port?

I need to connect my Canon XL1 to my MBP (which doesn't have FW, not even i-link!).  I  refuse to buy a Tbolt-FW adapter (unless it is not made by Apple). I spent a forture on this  notebook + I already had to buy a Tbolt-Ethernet adapter (no ethernet port either) + an external  DVD drive (no superdrive). This is getting ridiculous.
I found plenty of very cheap USB-FW adapters on Amazon, but none of them worked for anyone. If you know of one that does work, could you please let me know where I might find it?
I looked for HDMI-FW and HDMI-Ethernet adapters but found nothing.  I just started looking for a FW-iPod connector but haven't found anything yet.
I have a Dazzle analog to digital video converter it's going to degrade the picture quality.
All my older Macs would have worked if they weren't all down.  I have an old Sony VAIO which has i-link and ethernet. It looks like my only option at the moment. Pretty dissapointing to say the least.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?  Thank you.

I understand your objection, since I am keeping my non-Retina MacBook Pro with the built-in FireWire and Gigabit Ethernet ports for as long as I can, but the Apple adapter looks like the only real solution right now (other than the Vaio) if the old Macs are still down. It is not clear if there are any non-Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire adapters out there that are available and if so, are reliable.
While I am annoyed with Apple taking these ports off the new Macs (especially the GigE), I also believe that you need to commit to the tools required to get the job done. If it was mine I would have considered the adapter part of the original total budget for the machine. Maybe you could see if there's a used adapter on eBay.

  • SL install seemed to fail - now my MBP can't boot from HD or SL DVD

H E L P. Just bought SL family edition - upgraded my iMac 24 - worked fine so then I tried to upgrade my MBP (2+years old). At first the MBP just ejected the SL DVD - found lots of similar issues on this board. I finally got it working by holding my MBP at an angle while inserting the DVD - the install commenced. Since it would take some time I left the room and came back some time later (< 1 hour) - the screen was blank so I thought it had finished and gone to sleep. I had a lot of trouble waking up my MBP but finally it started to re-boot. It ejected the SL DVD then (I presume) tried to boot from the HD - this failed - screen just showed a folder icon with a question mark in it. So I assumed that somehow the SL install had not run to completion and the Mac OS image on the HD was corrupted. So I tried to boot from the SL DVD - this seemed to start working - screen shows Apple logo and spinning wheel for about 45 seconds (just like any normal boot) but then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. By holding down the power button for 15 seconds or so - the boot restarts but the same thing happens.
So now the SL DVD is "stuck" in the player and I'm not sure what to do next. I was going to try my Leopard disk (thinking maybe the SL DVD was dodgy) but I'm not sure how to eject the SL disk. It's Sunday here so I can't call the Apple support center and the Genius Bar at my local Apple shop is booked out until next weekend.

Before anyone jumps in I have fixed the problem - found it in the Snow Leopard forum. Issue was screen was too dim to see anything. As a result I must have accidentally aborted the SL install which corrupted something so I had to re-install from the SL DVD but it looked like that was not working due to the dim screen. VERY irritating to say the least - lost many hours on this.

  • Audio Line In/Internal Mic ignored if FireWire DV camera seen first?

I've been working streaming a broadcast that is intended to consist of audio fed into an MBP via its line in and video fed in via FireWire.
However, I've found quite often that if after boot the audio input is plugged in too quickly after the FireWrie connection is hot plugged, the MBP will not "see" the incoming audio, nor will it see audio coming from the internal mic; I can plug the cable in and out several times but the Sound preference pane never shows input audio.
However, if I unplug the FireWire and plug it back in, it seems the MBP will continue to see the audio in and the FireWire camera.
This also works if I wait to make sure the MBP can "see" the line in before hot-plugging the FW camera.
Has anyone else seen this?  Anyone know of any other workarounds other than to make sure the line in audio is "seen" before plugging in the camera?
This is within the context of Ustream, but the audio isn't even being seen at the Finder level.

  • Seeking reliable firewire and usb 2.0 combo cardbus card

Subject line says it all, or mostly so. I have an IoGear GUF202 pcmcia card with two USB 2.0 ports, one six-pin FireWire port, and one four-pin FireWire port. Its USB 2.0 services are not reliable; sustained transfers freeze my 1Ghz Titanium PowerBook G4. I've seen online several other cards from different manufacturers with the same form factor, but haven't yet found one with the preferred NEC chipset for USB services.
Can anyone offer a recommendation -- and a source? Swapping separate FireWire and USB 2.0 PC cards is becoming a pain.

    Hi Jamie,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

Hi, I was able to reformat my iPod and that worked. I read it on one of the threads and I am copy pasting the method below:
I opened the "My Computer" window and right-clicked on my ipod, and then selected "Format". I select "Yes" to format since I don't have anything on the nano to delete anymore.
I then Eject my nano from the computer and did a restart while the nano is disconnected from the computer.
Once Windows finish loading I reconnect the USB to the nano(back of computer) which automatically pulls up iTune. It asked me to name the new ipod detected and created a playlist for that specific ipod name.

  • IPhone not downloading photos via Scanner and Camera Wizard?

I have an iPhone 3GS with iOS4.2, which has all been going fine (except for the standard alarms not working, reception problems, etc.) and I've been trying to get 2500+ photos off my phone for some time. Ordinarily, I simply open the scanner and camera wizard and save all my photos to an external hard drive, but now when I open the wizard thumbnails for only 39 photos show up, with the rest as red boxes with crosses that say downloading. I have left my phone for up to an hour and none of the photos download.
The last time I ran the wizard I had roughly 2000 photos on my iPhone and there were about 20 photos that did not appear, so I just downloaded everything else. I have tried to retrieve my photos (and failed) using iPhone Explorer and Phone Disk, and both only showed the 39 photos that had 'downloaded'. I don't know if it's a phone fault, or software fault (I'm currently running Windows XP) but it is very annoying.
My iPhone does appear in My Computer as a camera, but not files are in the folder. I've also tried other 'home remedies' such as taking a photo whilst it is connected and then the files appear for some people, no such luck for me. The amount of problems I've had with it is frustrating. As much as I love my iPhone, the fact that such simple tasks end up taking a hundred times longer than they should is making me consider if the cons are really worth the pros.
I'm assuming that I'm not alone with this problem, but has anyone else been able to sort it out?

I had the same problem. However I fixed it by replacing the Apple USB cable. The only thing that doesn't work correctly now is that Picasa 2 opens and imports the photos into Picasa 3. I will continue to use the program as it is but it is a little confusing and I would like to know what is happening.

  • White Balance tool and Camera Calibration Profiles

Downloaded Lightroom v4 Beta 1 for mac but the installer package failed to launch. (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.) So I've only watched the adobe tv presentations todate.
Anyway just wanted to give some feedback as a pro photographer about use of Lightroom and improvments I would like to see in the next version.
I am a commercial photographer who needs colour accuracy in photographing fashion/garment images - most of my work is reproduced on a printing press for catalogues and brochures. On average a shoot will yeild about 500 images for a client, so workflow is important as they normally want them all!
As a previous user of Capture One Pro v6 and now lightroom v3.6 - the biggest issue I have with Lightroom is the dominace of red tint when setting the white balance from a gray card reference image, shot at the same time as the images to be processed. I'm not adding anything to the images other than doing a white balance, a tweak on exposure and camera neutral setting on profiles.
To obtain a white balance setting I use the combination of an  Xrite white balance card and the Q-Card and the old fasioned Kodak Gray cards all mounted on the same surface. I've used spot and ambient light readings on the gray cards to measure exposure and I've used the Adobe DNG Profiler and the Xrite colour checker profiler with the large colour checker card as a reference, (I've made profiles for sunny days, cloudy days, dual illuminant etc etc) and I'm viewing my images on a colour calibrated apple monitor.
Not withstanding all of the above the best results I get out of Lightroom are using the camera profile neutral setting! Everthing else is just too red!! even though the images do look more punchy; for accuracy of actual colour I choose the camera neutral profile.
Well when I say best results, those for colour critical garment photography and skin tones, these results are similar to those obtained from capture one pro v6.
So for the Lightroom v4 I would like to see.
    1. White balance RGB values in numbers rather than percentages.
    2. Add and delete a colour readouts points with a dropper tool on an image to enable more acurate colour balancing particularly in shadow areas - (already available on capture one pro and adobe photoshop)
    3. Curves adjustments in all RGB channels (think you've done this)
    4. Output to CMYK profiles.
    5. Individual levels channel adjustment for RGB
    6. Ability re-organize my tools palette (add and remove) is per Capture One and Photoshop
    Regards

The legacy ACR X.x profiles are no more produced nor included for newer cameras (AFAIK, since ACR 5.1/LR 2.1). The Adobe Standard is the new default starting point for these.
While I am at it....are the Canon camera profiles I downloaded for the 1Ds MKII the same as for the 5D MKII or do I have to download different one...I suspect they are the same or Lightroom wouldn't offer them to me...is that correct?
The profiles are different for each camera model, even if they share the same name in the Calibration panel. If you can see them when developing 5DII files, it means the camera-specific profiles are installed for your particular camera model (otherwise, you wouldn't see them).

  • How to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 Mac version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video

My question: Is it possible to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 MacBook Pro/ Mac Os X version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video?
My camcorder is recognized with 4 pin to 4 pin firewire on laptop with Windows operating system; however, it will not recognize on MacBook Pro with 9pin to 4 pin firewire. JVC website does not offer any updated camcorder driver software for this camcorder and older version driver on CD will not download onto MacBook Pro.

    Hi
With the reservation of that I us:
    • iMovie 9.0.4
    • Mac OS X.6.9
    see my notes
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

Ive been up all night trying to fix my phone. i recently tried to restore my phone so i could start it out fresh. i left for a minute while it was restoring and came back to have a message on my laptop saying it failed to restore. My iphone now wont connect to itunes nor my computer since it doesn't show up under "computer". i have already reinstalled itunes, shut off my phone and laptop, and manually tried to reset phone by holding home button and lock screen button. i really need some assitance quick, and their support guides confuse me and misleads me a lot. Help greatly appreciate

    Try this:
    1. Close iTunes.
    2. Connect your iPhone to your computer and then launch iTunes.
    3. Turn your iPhone off (hold down the power button at the top of the iPhone).
    4. Then, hold down the sleep/wake button and home button together for EXACTLY 10 SECONDS, then release the sleep/wake button.
    5. Continue to hold down the Home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recover mode has been detected. When you are in DFU mode your iPhone screen will be completely black. Remember that if you see the restore logo, iTunes logo, or any message on the iPhone screen, you are not in DFU mode but standard Recovery Mode.
    6. Hit the OK message that should popup to restore your phone. Restore as "New".

  • Display and camera problems... related?

Dear Folks of Apple Support Communities.
Recently i have started to experience a rather disturbing issues with my screen, and that made me remember of the problems with the camera.
I have MBP retina early 2013 and. well, it is known fact that screens on this particular model are not exactly brilliant... The same could be said about the camera, which has simply tuns of blue noise! But the screen was acting pretty Ok for some time now, there always was a minor image retention, but as i had nowhere to fix this, i had to live with it. But recently the screen started to turn GREEN! Yes that emerald shade, almost like cartoon green!!! That happened to it once before, but was not so intense, well at least i was able to see something... But the other day i was completely blown away, when i turned on my mac and i sew bright-bright green screen with absolutely no picture... Why does this happen to a £2000 product i have no clue! Now it has an uneven colour (the bottom corners are blueish, and the sides are somewhat darker).
Is there some way to resolve it? Or should i ask for the screen replacement (and the camera with it as well)?
I will be in Glasgow starting from september, so i will have an Apple store near by... i just don't want this to happen anymore, it is really scary.
    Many thanks . Anna.

You should not be having those type of problems on a brand new Mac.  Did you call AppleCare about this?  If not why not?
You have 90 days of free phone tech support from Apple on top of your one year warranty.  Strongly suggest that you use it before you lose it!  You already missed your 14 day from the date of purchase to return your MBP for a refund or an exchange.
