Firewire appears to be dead

My Firewire appears to be dead on my Dual 867 MDD G4. Portable drives don't mount (Hard drive and CD/DVD) Tested the HD on my MBP and it was fine.
Disk utility couldn't see them either. I restarted, repaired permissions... No improvement.
Any tips?
Oh The system profiler shows "Firewire: " That's it... no details.

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
Good Luck!
Cheers!

    Hiya
My iPad appears to be dead. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. It was switched on and when I pressed the home button the screen went grey then...nothing.
I have tried charging/reset/hard reset. Nothing happened. I have also tried to connect to iTunes to reset but the screen is still black. I can hear a very low sound though...not sure what's happening but I thought was worth checking here before sending it away.

  • Light is out and it appears to be dead.

My time capsule's light is out and it appears to be dead. Can anything be done to fix it?

If you have AppleCare on any of your Macs, the Time Capsule might be covered.
Take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store....if you have one in your area.....or contact Apple Support directly to discuss your options

If the Time Capsule is not covered by AppleCare, Apple will not offer repairs, but there are some independent agents that can do this for you. Look under Time Capsule Repair in this link, originally posted by forum expert LaPastenague:

My iPad2 freeze up and appear to be dead and only show a black screen, why is it so?

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. It happens occasionally judging by the posts on here, but only once so far to me.

  • Three week old 3000 N200 notebook appears to be dead - will not boot up

    Hi,
I bought the Lenovo 3000 N200 notebook about 3 weeks ago and have used it a few times. I was using it today on battery, when the screen went blank and it switched off (I presume the battery went flat, but I didn't see any warning). I went to plug it in, and it appeared to start up for a few seconds, I heard the fan, but then it went dead. I thought the Z symbol I could see on it meant it was sleeping, but I see now it just means power on. I cannot get the system to boot up by pressing the on/off button, function/sleep button, mouse or enter key. Nothing is responding. I have left it a few hours in case things had overheated but still nothing. Luckily, I hadn't yet thrown out my old computer so can send this message. Is there something I am not doing correctly, or is my first new computer in many years (my last couple have been second hand and have lasted for years) dead after 3 weeks?
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

Hi just found this in Access help which is on your laptop
Problem: The battery pack cannot be fully charged by the power-off method in the standard charge time for your computer.
Solution: The battery pack might be over-discharged. Do the following:
    Turn off the computer.
Make sure that the over-discharged battery pack is in the computer.
Connect the ac adapter to the computer and let it charge.
If the battery pack cannot be fully charged in 24 hours, use a new battery pack.
Problem: Your computer shuts down before the battery status indicator shows empty, -or- Your computer operates after the battery status indicator shows empty.
Solution: Discharge and recharge the battery pack.
Problem: The operating time for a fully charged battery pack is short.
Solution: Discharge and recharge the battery pack. If your battery's operating time is still short, use a new battery pack.
Problem: The computer does not operate with a fully charged battery pack.
Solution: The surge protector in the battery pack might be active. Turn off the computer for one minute to reset the protector; then turn on the computer again.
Problem: The battery pack cannot be charged.
Solution: You cannot charge the battery when it is too hot. If the battery feels hot, remove it from the computer and allow it to cool to room temperature. After it cools, reinstall it and recharge the battery. If it still cannot be charged, have it serviced.
    Hope this helps

  • Laptop appears to be dead

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5879 with Intel Pentium Dual Core T2390 processor, 3GB RAM and a 200GB harddrive running Windows 7. It belongs to my nephew and we were trying to download "Marvel Heroes" when it just went black. There was no activity or sound, even though the "on" indicator was lit up. After quite a while we decided to try and restart the computer but the "on" light came on without any booting activity whatsoever.
    It appears dead.
What in the world happened? How can I undo this?

    Things to try:
Try a reset - remove battery, unplug power cord, and press power button for 30 seconds. Then try to start with just the power cord connected. Add battery after laptop is running.
Then if needed, again remove the battery and power cord  reseat the memory - take them out and put them back in, you may need to try one at a time and in different slots to see if you have a bad memory stick or memory slot on the laptop.
Power supply can be checked for output, you will see the ratings on it for voltage.

  • FW800 Card causes G4 all firewire ports to go dead

I tried to install an Allegro Firewire 800 card from Sonnet into my G4 1GHz Dual Processor G4. I put the card in, connected my firewire drive and got the following outcome.
    1. When I re-booted, the computer hung at the blue screen that comes right after the gray screen. It stayed there for a very long time 5+ minutes but finally got through it.
2.When I logged on I found that the firewire ports on the Sonnet card AND also the native FW 400 ports no longer worked.
3.I removed the card, rebooted, and the machine still hung at the blue screen for a long time. It finally got through it, but the FW ports were still dead.
    4. I worked for almost two hours, rebooting, trying to reset the PRAM, although I just got a black screen and no "restart" as is the usual case.
    5. Finally, I unpluggd the machine completely and re-booted one last time and magically, the native FW ports started to work. So now I am back where I started.
Any ideas what is going on here? Should I try to install the card again? I am thinking that it was a mistake to hook the drive up before the machine had a chance to recognize the card, so I am tempted to try again that way, but I am afraid of getting the same results. Or should I just throw the card in the trash basket, call it a $50 loss or be content with FW 400?

    Hi-
Finally, I unpluggd the machine completely and re-booted one last time and magically, the native FW ports started to work.
Doing so reset the PMU, and also reset the FW bus. Good job on stumbling onto the fix.
Any ideas what is going on here?
    Bad card, maybe......
Should I try to install the card again?
    Scary thought, huh.......
I am thinking that it was a mistake to hook the drive up before the machine had a chance to recognize the card, so I am tempted to try again that way, but I am afraid of getting the same results.
So, this means that you installed the card, connected a FW800 device, and then started the machine?
It would definitely be best to install the card, startup, and check the System Profiler, prior to connecting devices.
You don't need to shut down to connect a FW device. Hot plugging is fine, as long as you "eject" the device before unplugging it.

  • Why is my phone displaying a pink screen and has appeared to be dead?

    Hello, Obeynelson.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand your iPhone restarts on it's own and will not power on.  I would start with the troubleshooting steps that I have attached below.  Try these steps and please reply back if the issue persists.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, see the section labeled Issue not resolved.

  • My ipod nano appears to be dead

Theres nothing on the screen even after charging for a few hours, I've tried toggling the switch and holding the menu and select buttons. The odd thing is when it was plugged into the computer I can find all the music on the ipod path?? suggesting that the ipod is not actually fried?  Any suggestions.

    Try these.
    iPod won't turn on.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
iPod doesn't appear in iTunes or on the Mac desktop.
When restoring the iPod, it's often useful to put it into disk mode first.
    Putting iPod into disk mode.
If none of the above help, it may need service.

  • My iphone 4 appears to be dead while using

My phone has gone blank suddenly
    No button is working
    Screen is black
    what should i do

Have you tried to reset your iPhone? Reset the iPhone by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.  Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.

Phone was fine last night, woke up and now it's dead, had been charging all night-can't power on. Screen is black

You are welcome. The basic steps to take when things go wrong are restart, reset, then restore. A reset is just a reboot of the phone. Nothing is lost and I have done this several times myself.
