Firewire (AV) Videocam with USB-only New iMac

This has probably been answered somewhere but can't find it. What sort of connector is required to connect my Sony DCR HC52 camcorder to a new 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz USB-only computer? My current 4-year old MacBook Pro has the firewire input, which works fine with this tape-based camcorder.

Hi saxyjazzman
It looks like the camcorder came with a FireWire 400 to 4 pin cable and the new iMac only has 4 USB ports and 1 FireWire 800 port.
So it looks like you need either a Sonnet 400 to 800 adapter or a 9 to 4 pin FireWire cable that connects to your camcorder.

  • M-Audio MobilePre USB on new iMac

    Hi All
Well, I ordered my 20" iMac on the 25th of August, and it wasn't suppose to ship till tomorrow. And today, I found out I got a nice free upgrade to the new Core 2 Duo 20" iMac, which really made me happy Looks like I'll be getting one of the first BTO Core 2 Duo iMacs, which is really awesome
Anyway, my question to you all is about the M-Audio MobilePre USB and if any of you got it working on the Intel iMacs running 10.4.7. Last I checked, they only had Intel and PPC drivers for upto 10.4.6. My Powerbook is running 10.3.9 so I can't test to see if it would work with the latest OS (plus, the power adapter had a melt down, so I can't even use it at the moment).
    Thanks,

    Hi phjo,
Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to wait and see when my new iMac arrives.
By the way, besides a newer and faster processor, is there any other major difference between the old 20" iMac and the new Core 2 Duo one?
    Thanks,

  • Multiple Issues with iTunes on New iMac

    Hello Apple Community,
I recently bought a 27" iMac with 3.1Ghz i5 processor running on Snow Leopard and finally set it up.  I have owned many Macs in the past and currently have been using a 5 year old 15" MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard that has been running flawlessly but I needed something with a bit more processing power.  When I first took my iMac out of the box I went ahead and used the Migration Assistant to move my applications and files over from my MacBook Pro but after multiple attempts I had to stop and simply move the music, document, and photo data on to a portable hard drive while I got the Migration Assistant to move the applications.  I simply moved the old iTunes music folder over to my new iMac and replaced the iTunes folder on my iMac.  The new iMac has already been authorized through my iTunes account and the music will play.  Now here are my current issues.
When I play a song on iTunes, there appears to be a random amount of fade-in and/or crossfade when I switch playing songs.  I have checked the playback preferences and crossfade is not checked.  Some songs the crossfade will take a second while sometimes it will be as much as 10 seconds of crossfade.  On my MacBook with the identical library and settings, it does not have these issues.
The other issue I have been experiencing is if iTunes has been open and my computer sits for a little while (usually after awaking from sleep or even listening to a few songs without touching the keyboard, the songs will stop playing on their own and when I press the play button, it begins to "play" the track but there is no sound coming from iTunes.  I have checked the volume slider in iTunes and it is still at max volume while all other applications still work and output sound.  iTunes will only work properly if I close it and re-open it.
The final issue is similar to the last one in that when I try and play previews in the iTunes Music store it will not play but when I hit the play button iTunes will then appear to be "playing" but no sound from either the store or any of my songs from the Library.
iTunes works perfectly fine on my MacBook Pro and it does have any of these issues.  Both Macs are currently running iTunes 10.4.1.  All songs in each library are checked and will play to a degree.
I have deleted iTunes and all corresponding library files, (basically anything with iTunes in the name) and tried to reinstall iTunes and used multiple methods to replace the music files including using Home Sharing, a portable Hard Drive, and dragging and dropping the music files from the shared folder and no matter what I try, I still cannot get iTunes on my iMac to work properly.  I have been searching around the support forums for others who might have had this issue but I cannot seem to find much.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had not tried that before, but from your suggestion, I went ahead and did it and it seems to have gotten rid of the crossfade issues I was experiencing but whenever I try and listen to a preview in the iTunes music store it still does not appear to be working.  Also, I was testing a number of tracks and it seems like there are a few tracks in particular that will make iTunes stop playing when I click on them and then if I attempt to play something else, iTunes says it is playing but no sound is coming from it.
What I have found that is interesting is the first time I ran the Disk Utility it repaired a HUGE number of misc. files.  After running it and still experiencing problems I tried to run it again but this time the files were not as numerous and were all within the /Library/CoreServices menu.  Each subsequent time I ran the Disk Utility and rebooted, I tried to run the Disk Utility again and the same files seem to still be having the same issues.  This is just an example of one of the files I have been having an issue with.
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/zh_TW.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib" , should be drwxr-xr-x , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/zh_TW.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib" .
One in particular gave me a Warning and said it could not be repaired.  I'm not sure if it is important to repair but I still seem to be having some issues here and there.  Here is the message from the Disk Utility regarding the file in question.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

  • Is there a way to make Firewire iSight work with USB apps?

I am awaiting attival of my new iSight on Monday and I was beginning to wonder if there is some software or a trick you can use to get other chat programs to look at the firewire port instead of USB to enable the programs to see the iSight as a viable cam to use in those programs, or am I limited to using iChat when videoconferencing? I have the iChat for USB software that allows my Piece-Of-S#@% Kensington to work in iChat—making it recognize a USB cam as opposed to looking at the firewire port. Is there an equivalent out there that fools the other chat programs into looking at Firewire instead of USB?
G4 Dual 550   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.2 GB RAM, 380 GB Storage, DVD Burner/Slide-Out Cup Holder, USB2, TV Tuner

OK, if I read you correctly, these programs such as Yahoo, etc. will look wherever they can to find the cam then? I wondered if they just looked to see if there was something plugged into a USB slot it could identify as a cam and if it didn't see anything there, I wasn't sure if it would look to the firewire port as well. I guess I'll know more when the cam gets here and I try it out, but from what you said they should work as well. 10:30 a.m. estimated arrival time. I'm pretty excited!

  • How to transfer iTunes with playlists to new imac

I have a 250 GB drive on my old iMac, and have been storing my iTunes files on an external hard drive.  I now have a new iMac and would still like to keep my music and a few current video files on an external hard drive.  iTunes on the external drive is 260 GB,  I also have another 100GB for various videos, mostly home movies converted to MP4 and stored separately so as not to clog up iTunes any more.
I understand that if I simply point iTunes to an external drive with this iTunes folder, on my new iMac I will no lnger have the playlists I have organized over the past 5 years.  Most of the music is stored by sub-genre and year, or by very personalized criteria.

Thank you for speedy reply.  I looked at the external drive iTunes folder and there is something called iTunes library and iTunes music library, but they do not seem to be used (thought the music library is a 35mb file)
On the old iMac, there are files with the same name, though these files show they ere last modified today.  It seems to hole most of the other media, like my mobile apps, iBooks content, podcasts and other material put on my iPad.
All my music and videos seem to be on the remote, but it is the music I am most concerned about, given the work I have put into organizing it in iTunes.
If I set up the new iMac iTunes incorrectly, would I be able to start over later.  I still have it in the box.
    Thanks.

  • What's with the brand new imac's not being able to handle 3 tracks in garage band? This is crap!

I have been so dissapointed by Lion i'm thinking about selling the brand new Imac. No Rosettta?! So i cant use Final Cut express anymore or CS3, and I don't WANT TO UPGRADE> And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many? I can work better on my 2008 macbook!!!!

And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many?
There must be something wrong. A brand-new iMac should really perform better.
What model did you buy (Processor, how much disk space, how much RAM)? Can it be, that your harddrive is too full with less than 15 GB of free space, or the iMac has not enough RAM? Lion needs a bit more memory than Snow did.

  • Problems with AIM on new iMac G5

Hi--Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I'm having an extremely frustrating problem with AIM, which I recently downloaded on my son's new iMac G5 (TIger 10.4.3). I've tried posting this question in the iChat forum, but since he doesn't use iChat and never has it open on his computer, I don't think it's an interference problem with iChat.
AIM quits unexpectedly and repeatedly, often several times in just a few minutes. I've tried: throwing out all preferences, trashing and reinstalling AIM, and using AIM from a different user account on the machine. AIM worked FINE on my computer--an older G4 also running OS Tiger, so I can't imagine that this is an operating system conflict.
A friend suggested that it might be a problem with the wireless network. The new G5 is connected wirelessly via Airport to my G4. Has anyone heard of AIM not running well on a wireless machine? Could something (an outside frequency perhaps?) be interfering with the wireless connection, causing AIM to quit?
Needless to say, AOL's tech support is completely unhelpful. Says they don't provide tech support for AIM.
If anyone can help, or knows someplace I can find AIM tech support, I would GREATLY appreciate it! THanks!

The best advice I can offer is to dump the AOL AIM client altogether, and use a third-party instant messaging application that supports AIM.
For example, Adium X is a full featured IM client that supports AIM as well as many other IM protocols.
It's very stable on Tiger, and it's light years ahead of the official AIM client from AOL.
    Try it out!

  • IMac G5 with Panther to New iMacs with Intel

Will there be any issues with programs or files I can run or open on my iMac G5 with Panther 10.3.9 if I transfer them to a new iMac G5 with the Intel chip and Tiger platform?
I am aware that I will probably be buying a new graphics Software package (Adobe Creative Suite)when I purchase the new computerRight now I have Creative Suite original circa 2004 (not professional)
Would files that I have created on the older system transfer to the new platform?
I'm ready for the changes but is my system?
    Thanks you,

iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Flat screen all in one G5

The Mac OS X setup assistant comes with a migration tool to help you move your files and installed applications to your new machine. Because you are moving from an older Mac OS to a newer Mac OS and because you are moving from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac, you may see some minor differences but for the most part everything should still work.
The migration tool will not erase your older iMac. If something does not work then you have not lost anything other than a little time.
If you have further questions or concerns I suggest you post them in a forum dedicated to the iMac such as <http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=132> rather than this one, which is dedicated to Mac and Windows compatibility issues.
    Hope this helps!

  • Is something worng with my brand new iMac?

Ok so let me try to explain this. When connecting to the internet it seems like my mac works better wireless than it does hardwired which dosnet make sense. When its wired i have problems loading pages and and its slower. Wireless its perfect.. I also did a speed test and wireless came back at 21.06 and wired was 11.45. I think something is wrong with my mac ethernet port because of this. Now is this normal for a mac to work better wireless than wired??? I have a linksys router wrt160n if that helps. I like it wireless because of less clutter so i dont mind that, but i just want to make sure i dont have to bring my mac in for repair. Oh its also the new imac 2.93ghz

It should definitely work better hardwired. Check out the following points. They're all I can think of at the moment:
    1. Have you tried hard-wiring from the mac to the router (not to the modem)? There may be some settings issues between the mac and modem.
    2. Are you sure you're using your wireless network when wireless? Maybe you're using someone else's internet which has a better router/etc.
    3. Turn off airport when you're wired.
    4. Your Ethernet network settings may be messed up. Go to the network system preference, make a new location, (which resets all of your network settings for that location) apply and try again.
    5. In the network system preference, make sure Ethernet is at the top. Your computer always attempts to use those higher in the list first.
    6. Try a different ethernet cable.
    7. Take a look at the ethernet ports on your mac and whatever else you plug it into. Make sure the pins aren't bent/corroded/etc.
    8. Take your imac to a different location and try internet wired. If it's slow there too, there's an issue with your system which is likely software related (reinstall mac os), but may be hardware related (take the mac back and get a replacement).

  • IPhone not Working with iTunes on New iMac

I recently upgraded a family member's iMac from an early Intel iMac to a new i5 iMac. Both the old and the new were running 10.6.4 and had iTunes 9.2.1.
I used the simple transfer functionality when setting up the new iMac to transfer everything over from the old iMac
When I loaded up iTunes on the new iMac and connected the iPhone (3GS, iOS 4.0.2), nothing happened. I checked System Profiler and it was there.
After trying a couple times, restarting, etc, I followed the instructions here to entirely remove and reinstall iTunes and its files from the new iMac: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224
(I did everything, including the "Additionally..." instructions at the bottom).
This did the trick - The iPhone was recognized by iTunes. However, the next time I restarted the iMac everything went back to the old (no iPhone recognition by iTunes).
Any advice on what I might be missing?
Message was edited by: Kai Brinker

It seems I only need to reinstall iTunes, not delete everything first, to get iTunes to recognize the iPhone until restart.
What in the restart process could cause this to go away?

  • Cannot find idvd only new iMac

cannot find idvd on my new imac, have looked in apps.

    Good question, shame it's gone.
It's possible to re-install it if you've got a Snow Leopard back-up, although I haven't tried it myself:

  • Cameras with USB only?  no FireWire?

I'm trying to connect a couple of cameras to iMovie 08 and they don't have FireWire, only USB...
    1. SONY Handycam DCR-DVD808 (DVD RW)
    and
    2. JVC Everio HDD Camcorder
Neither of these have Firewire, only USB
My SONY miniDV DCR-HC40E has Firewire and I've had no problems connecting to iMovieHD or iMovie '08 (I prefer iMovieHD to '08 as it's easier to use!)
Obviously due to the differences in format with these three cameras, I can't transfer to my miniDV.
Can anyone assist on how I can connect the above two cameras to download footage to make a DVD?
    Thanks in advance!?

I've found the manual online for iMovie 08, and it says that USB DVD and HDD cameras are compatible with iMovie 08, however when I try to connect the SONY DVD handycam by USB, iMovie will not recognise the camera and the camera can not connect...
Any ideas why it's not working? or a setting that I might be missing?

  • Firewire 800 xHD with intel duo core imac?

I need to get some new desktop external hard drives for backup. Want firewire, but all are 800s now.
Can I use them on my iMac6,1 - intel core 2 Duo? ca. 2008-2009. Has 3 ports for 400 Firewire (+ 2 USB which is too slow).
Also, Seagate used to be flawless. Now I read reports of them going bad in days or months. How is WD now? Recommendations?
    Thanks.  ~Ann

First off, FireWire 800 is backwards compatible with FireWire 400 - you just need either a FW800 - FW400 cable, or an adapter you can attach to an existing cable. Many vendors sell them, including MacSales. Then you can use your FW800-based drive on a machine with only FW400 ports (or vice versa).
As for brand - we all have our own horror stories as well as praises to sing. Personally, I run away, quickly, from anything WD and would err towards Seagate or Hitachi (even though the latter is now part of WD <sigh>).
