FireWire Bus:    Warning:     Unable to list FireWire devices.

How do I fix this on my older G5
FireWire Bus:
Warning:          Unable to list FireWire devices.
Trying to use my sony DCR HC-30
Use to work

Hi try this...
reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
1. Shut the machine down.
2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
3. leave it for 10 minutes.
4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Firewire problem (the old 'Warning: unable to list firewire devices')

    Hello everyone,
I am having a very big problem with my 13" Macbook Pro since yesterday. I took it to work and hooked it to a RME Fireface 800 audio interface we have in there, and for some odd reason it didn't recognize the interface. After a few tries, it suddenly came alive. I did the recording session as usual, turned the notebook off and brought everything home. Today, I hooked it to my own RME Fireface 400, and one of the firewire ports on it wasn't working - I plugged on the other and started audio playback. After a few minutes, the audio stopped and the host connection problem led the Fireface has turned on. AFter this, I couldn't get the fireface to be recognize on its own - more on this later.
I went to system profiler and got a 'WARNING: Unable to list firewire devices' message. I already googled it and it seems I am not the only own having this problem. I already clean PRAM, SMC, ran disk utility to repair disk and disk permissions and nothing has worked. HOWEVER, one external HD (firewire) i have is working just fine on this same firewire interface. I also tried daisy chaining the Fireface to the Hard disk, the later being connected itself to the Macbook, and using this method the interface works. I also tried the interface on another computer and it works just fine - so the problem lies on my Macbook Pro.
Now, I went to the Console application to see if there was any error messages, and in fact there are plenty. I got a bunch of 'FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: Bad selfIDs, issuing bus reset (retry 2)' and then 'Missing self ID for node 0!'. Also got some 'Firewire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: 4403 resets in last 3 minutes'. Also 'SPFWR ERROR: Firewire bus may be unstable. Other Firewire devices may be present.'. Right now, If i plug the interface and look for something on the console, I get nothing. I only get something when I look on the System Profiler.
So, obviously, there's a problem between my interface and the MBP. Anyone has ANY clue on what to do? BTW, the interface don't work when booting to bootcamp using W7 (it is also not recognized). But like I said, it works when daisy-chained to the hard disk or in another computer.
    Thanks a lot,
    Ivan

Does the RME device have its own AC power supply brick? If so I would suspect that it is failing and the system is pulling too much juice from the MBP. When you have a drive daisy-chained the interface is able to get the juice it needs from that drive and not from the Mac itself.
If it has no power supply brick you will have better luck with a powered hub.

  • Warning:Unable to list FireWire devices.

My firewire drives don't appear on my computer. in system profiler I get this message Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices. they do work on my laptop with all the same cables.

I've tried all of that, but still having problems -- cannot access either of my firewire ports with either of my dv cameras. This all happened after I had taken my iMac in for a tune up. Here is the long process to try and get the problem solved. I brought my iMac in to diagnose the problem and they replaced the logic board. (Of course, they didn't have the part in stock, so I had to lug my iMac back home and return in 5 days.) It still did not work, so I called Apple Care, who had me try a lot of different thiings and they he said it was a hardware problem. I brought it back to the Apple Store and one of the "geniuses" plugged in his test drive and my iMac recognized it. He convinced me to buy a new 9-pin cable and try the other firewire slot. That didn't work, either. I called Apple Care again and spent at least an hour on the phone. He said maybe it was my camera. This is not the case, as my PC recognized my dv camera device, using the same firewire cable. They could not resolve the problem and told me to take my iMac to an authorized Apple Certified repair store. Am I the only one still experiencing this problem? Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

  • FireWire warning: unable to list FireWire devices (red warning)

    Hello dear Apple Community,
My last (fifth Apple Computer indeed) which is recent (iMac alu 24'' 2,4 ghz refurbly bought 3 weeks ago) shows me signs of unusual lack of reliability.
This computer works pretty much fine but I regularly encounter a FireWire issue with it after a few hours of work. Generally after a long period of standby I cannot mount my FireWire devices so I have to reboot the iMac. I must precise that my peripherals are not in trouble (I have tried several cables and external drives), but the computer must be.
I have tried to use another user account and I have also reinstalled entirely the OS.
The funny thing is that when the FireWire is not responding I cannot put the computer in sleep mode!
Each time I reboot it reworks again (until when is the question).
It bothers me in a way I never had to restart my previous Macs (the reason why I switched several years ago from MS to Apple Computer Inc.).
I begon to think I am the only one with it: either FW works 100 % or 0 % but not like my CPU.

    Good news everyone,
I finally found the origin of my problem: it comes from the RAM.
    When I use 1 slot with 1GB, 2 slots of 1GB each or 1GB + 2GB it works fine.
When I put 2 times 2GB it doesn't work because of the difference between the memories (the same bus but not the same manufacturer). I will try buying an extra 2GB RAM in order to have a correct dual channel.

  • Unable to list firewire devices.thank you now for your future help.

all right so my firewire decided it cant recognize my sony handycam...so i decided hey it is probably the firewire...so i buy a new firewire and it still doesnt work...so then i was like all right look it up online...i reset my smu nvram pram deleted the caches files turned off and unplugged the computer for 5 minutes ten minutes then a whole night...i get back to it and it doesnt work...so then i decided maybe my camera so i buy a new canon hd camera...i wanted a new camera anyways so what the heck you know? it doest recognize it...i have run techtool deluxe and disk utility repaired what i could repair...and nothing has worked...i then i take it to the mac store and have them look at it and he plugs in an external hard drive it works...my new canon works...and my sony does not work at the store...so then i am like all right it was a bad camera...get back home hook up the canon...it doesnt work...so if anyone has any ideas tell me please...i am in the middle of a project and this problem is really setting me back...i have some console messages and my mac info here... the guy at the mac store could have cared less that the bus was resetting and just thought i was crazy...would a hub solve this problem...i also tried plugging the comp in different outlets maybe it was being underpowered....so someone help me out the first console message i posted is from when i was in the apple store

  • Stumped: PM G5 FireWire Bus--Unable to list FireWire Devices

I have a nearly four year old Power Mac G5. My firewire ports were working fine a month ago before 10.5.8. Today I went to hookup my video camera to download some tape into iMovie '09 and it did not recognize the camera. A quick check of system profiler:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
I have tried the following to fix in this order:
    1. Reset Pram (commandoption+PR)
    2. Reset Devices by (commandoption+OF)
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
    3. Repaired Permissions
    4. Reset PRAM
    5. Reinstalled 10.5.8 combo installer
I still cannot get the firewire bus to work. I am open to ideas. Someone suggested removing the PRAM battery but I have been unable to figure out how to do that.

I ended up unplugging computer for 5 minutes and re-plugging in and this seems to have solved problem (although I do not know why.)

  • In system profiler it says "unable to list firewire devices"

I have been trying to figure out for days why when I hook up my camcorder with a firewire that all that comes up on my screen is the isight camera and not my camcorder. I have tried everything. I finally went into the system profiler and checked my firewire bus and it said it was unable to list firewire devices. My computer is only a few weeks old. Do I need to take it in or is this something I can fix?

Any word on a solution? I also have this problem. My Panasonic DVX100AP works great with my MacBook Pro (10.4) but when I try to use it with the same version of Final Cut Studio (5.1) on my new iMac with Leopard, it's not recognized at all. It wouldn't recognize in iMovie 08 either. I then checked the system profiler and found the "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices." message.
I called AppleCare and they had me try and connect my MBPro via firewire for target disk mode. Sure enough, the MBPro's hard drive mounted fine on my new iMac via firewire. So the firewire port is fine.
The rep suggested that I contact Panasonic as she believes it's an operating system issue and that Panasonic needs to offer some sort of software solution (driver?) to fix this. I've contacted Panasonic and am waiting to hear back from them.
If you have any tips, please let us know.

  • Unable to list FireWire

I cannot mount any FireWire attached peripherals, when I check FireWire in the System Profiler I geth this warning: unable to list FireWire devices.
    How can I fix this?

If I wanted RAID5, I'd be using either a dedicated FW800 PCIe; or move to SATA controller.
Mixing consumer electronic devices and hard drives on the FW bus - there is just one controller for all FW ports - is too much noise and interference.
I thought 2009 offered only FW800, so you have to downgrade, and you are using a hub? And never daisy-chain please.
You may not need more than 75MB/sec, but any of today's drive will easily deliver that as their minimum average. And all that 'chatter' on 800Mbps bus rather than a 3Gbps SATA bus.
FirmTek Port Multiplier 5-drive case, or Highpoint RocketRAID 2314 RAID5 controller.

  • I cannot connect any firewire device.

When I go to firewire on the profiler it returns "warning, unable to list Firewire devices." Any ideas?

    OK,
It looks like you have one of the original Intel iMacs, an early 2006 model. What I first try to do is a SMC reset, please follow:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • FireWire Bus : Unable to list FireWire devices

My FireWire drives (4 lacies) quit mounting. The system profiler says "Warning FireWire Bus : Unable to list FireWire devices". Is there something I should try before I go to Applecare with my brand new MacBook Pro with the glossy screen? I have check permissions and verified the disk and checked the cables, drives, etc they all work on other computers.

I installed leopard on my mac mini's external FW boot drive with no problems and have used it for days. Then, yesterday my house experienced a momentary power drop (it was fast; not like a brownout) which resulted in my Firewire port becoming inaccessible! The system was unbootable.
Thinking initially that it was a problem with the FW drive, I attached it to another Mac. Saw it no problems. So, the problem clearly lay on the Mac Mini.
Ultimately, the solution was just solved by resetting the Mini's Power Manager Unit. Search Apple's technical articles for instructions for your particular Apple computer.
    Hope this helps

    reset pram
unplug the power cord and wait for 30 mins and reboot
and they couldn't solve the problem.
    Could anyone solve this?
    Thanks

First thing to do is reset the FW chip set on the mother board. Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes the ports to do stuff like detect when a device wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac). Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now plug the power cord back in, plug in ONLY the keyboard and mouse, start up the Mac. Now plug in accessories/hard-drives and see if your FW ports and the drive work any better.
    Best of luck!
    Patrick

  • Unable to list FireWire devices.

    Hi,
I'm having issues with my firewire port that have unfortunately not been resolved using the tips outlined in either article / topic:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1197602
This not only affects my click-wheel iPod but also any other firewire device I try to connect to my MBP (e.g. a 160 WD HD). Restoring the iPod via USB, patching the OS, running the daily / weekly / monthly scripts, using Leopard Cache Cleaner etc do not resolve the issue.
And the very same issue plagues my old 12in PowerBook G4, 10.5.1.
None of this happened in Tiger. Apple may well be moving away from firewire, but seriously, what the ****??? Combined with the "ELP!" keyboard issue, I'm starting to get quite cheesed off at the company...
Any ideas (apart from working in bootcamp!) welcome...
    Jim

    'fraid so.
However, since my original post I've left the iPod connected - iTunes just picked it up out of the blue and started syncing with it. I then started to copy over some more music following a restore, and it unmounted 1/2 way through.
If I wasn't having similar problems with my external HD I'd be inclinded to blame the iPod, but again, it (iPod) works fine via USB. I'd otherwise blame the port if the problem didn't also occur on my PowerBook...
I'm inclined to agree with a poster on one of the other threads who implicated an issue with Leopard's firewire driver, but I'm far from being an expert, so...
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • "unable to list firewire devices?"  what's up?

I recently bought an external hard drive and case. I have had on again/off again issues with it being recognized by my system when I turn it on. It is connected by firewire. My usb external drive never has this issue.
When i click "about this mac" and "more info" to look up my firewire devices I receive the message in the subject line. If I reboot it seems to sometimes fix the issue but not all the time.
I don't know whether I have a cheap firewire cable, if that is possible, a bad mac issue, or a hard drive issue.
    any thoughts? thx

Sorry for the slow response as I've had some health issues. It is a seagate drive and an icy dock. I'll have to look up the specific part numbers. But I have further narrowed the issue down. When I connect by USB it works fine 100% of the time. The problem is when I connect by firewire. It will connect fine once or twice. The next time, touching nothing, it will not recognize it at all. It's like a loose connection or something. I think it's related to the firewire connection.
Oddly, if I have the drive connected and on and my ipod connected, when I disconnect and cut off the usb hard drive, itunes also ejects my ipod. I know this sounds crazy but I've watched it happen a few times.

  • HT1338 anyone found a solution to firewire bus warning in 10.6.8

anyone found a solution to firewire bus warning in 10.6.8 ? reset smc pram safe boot still no joy recognising my m-audio fw solo!!!

What exactly is the warning message?
It could be anything from a bad FireWire cable, a bad chip set in the Solo to tripped port overload protection in the computer.
    1. Try another FireWire device with your computer to see if it works.
    2. Try the Solo with another computer to see if it is working.
    3. Try resetting the SMC as per > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC), but in step #3 wait 5 minutes instead of 15 seconds to allow more time for the FireWire port protection to reset.
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.  <------- 5 minutes
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
