Firewire cable & eSATA cable

How may pins does my late '08 MBP have for the Firewire connection? I'm on Monoprice's site trying to order a cable, but there are so many choices, that I'm not certain what I need.
Also, I have a LaCie 2T NAS that I'm currently using through ethernet connection to AEBS, but I was thinking of connecting it straight to my MBP. The LaCie has an ethernet, eSATA and USB connection and I was thinking of using the eSata connection, but I obviously don't have that on my MBP, so would I need a cable with firewire on one end and eSTA on the other, or do I need to purchase a firewire/eSATA adaptor?
I searched the forum but did not find the answers to my question.
thanks
Paul

MBP firewire 800 is 9-pin. And I have seen firewire-to-eSATA converters by FirmTek (they have a yahoo store) in the form of powered hubs sold as the "SpyderHUB".

  • Which eSATA cable do I need?

I've never used a SATA device before and am confused about which type of cable I need to connect my external hard drive to my computer's SATA port.
The external drive is a 1TB Acomdata pureDrive with an eSATA interface (here are its specs). My computer is a Macbook Pro 5,5; I bought it in September of 2009, so I'm assuming it's the mid-2009 model. Thanks for any tips. The more specific you can get, the better, as I have no idea what I'm doing!

Your drive uses a 7-pin eSATA connector. This cable will work:

    Is this your computer?

If so, you have an ExpressCard 34 expansion slot, so you can buy this
to add an eSATA connector to your computer:

If your computer doesn't have an ExpressCard 34 slot, boo-hoo!
You'll have to try to get this to work with your Firewire connector,
but then it will have Firewire speed:

    if it works.

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

  • Firewire 800 extension cable?

Hi, I am looking for a firewire 800 extension cable to use for when I switch my external hard drive between my mini and laptop. The mini is up and out of the way and would be easier if the extended from the computer instead of reaching to the back of the computer. I looked on the apple store and search the internet and did not find one yet. I know they have them for USB because I have one, so I was hoping there was one somewhere for FW800. Has anyone seen some place selling them?

well, i got that from a German site: http://www.partsdata.de/Firewire--Firewirerepeater_HUBs_switches_panels--Firewire_800_HUBs__gbshop2201.html.
they do ship within Europe ...

  • Long eSATA Cable?

I'd like to use the longest eSATA cables possible, to keep my noisy enclosures as far away from me as possible.
Anybody know the maximum safe length? I know length is a performance issue with eSATA.
I see that CablesToGo has a 6.5 foot one.
    - Ted.

Unfortunately, a stock answer of two meters will not always work. The SATA II spec provides for two meters but many cards and enclosures do not support that distance. If you open the SATA enclosure and find they have 8-11" SATA cables running from the back of the hard drive to the internal SATA mounting, you will need to take that distance off of the 2 meter cable specification.
That means users might end up with a maximum usable length of a little over a meter for the SATA cable. The longer the cable, the more possible problems will occur.
I would suggest you consider a quiet eSATA enclosure for noise sensitive environments. The FirmTek enclosures are very quiet and they include a direct backplane mounting that requires no extra internal SATA cables. You can read more about them here:

  • Any word on a firewire to thunderbolt cable?  Got a new MacBook Pro and can't do any work on it til I can get to my data that's stored on my firewire-accessible external hard drive!

Any word on a firewire to thunderbolt cable?  Got a new MacBook Pro and no way to access my data because my data is stored on an external hard drive accessible only by firewire!

This is really starting to be annoying.  Apple said this adapter would be available in July.
Of course we could always buy the Thunderbolt Display.  For $999.  Complete with USB 2 ports.  That's not why we bought your MBP-Retina, Guys.  We expected connectivity -- high speed connectivity -- as you promised.
I also had an Apple store rep tell me that the adapter would be availble in September.  Hate to say it but it feels like Apple is resorting to selling vaporware.  It's a page out of the Bill Gates play book.

  • PPCS3 and "Firewire to USB" cable

We're fitting out one of our new labs, and the IT people have suggested a nice micro-form factor unit which attaches to the back of the monitor via VESA.
Alas, no Firewire port, and no scope for an expansion card of any kind.
They have suggested a "FireWire to USB" cable as a possible solution. I didn't think such a thing was available, but they sent me the link and lo and behold. The graphic indeed shows a video camera (FW) connected to a PC's USB port.
Does anyone have any experience with such a cable and Premier? My understanding is that the Capture window can only "see" firewire devices? Is my assumption correct?
    kind regards
    Matthew P

correct, premiere only recognizes firewire, not usb. also you would be limited to the speed of usb port, so you could have isssues with that as well.

  • Solid esata cable for t410?

    Hello,
I would like to buy good esata cable which I can put to the Esata socket in my t410 for longer time.
I am using normal straight cable and when i forget to avoid on this I am disconnecting my ext drive which I have connected all time.
I am looking for cable which will be 90 * degrees angled to the LCD display. I have only found 90* degrees down angled ( like sata) .
    Is there such a solution?
    regards

Sorry, what is an active adapter? Is that a host card? I currently have a newer tech esata extender cable. I figure this is NOT active???
Also, any thoughts on quality? Is there a difference in performance (speed, dropped frames, etc) with different quality cables?
    Thanks

  • How to connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

  • Which external HD type (firewire or esata)

Which external HD type (firewire or esata), is the best for Rendering video used with a Mac book pro?
ive heard of esata.....is this available as a connection type on a macbook pro?

Thank you so much for your input here - these boards/forums are so great for questions and answers for a new to be mac user like me.
I will be getting the G-Drive 500GB drive quad interface.
It has firewire 400 and firewire 800 and USB and esata connections. It comes with a firewire 800 cable.
I think I may just skip the esata expansion card and edit/capture/render on this external drive using FW800.
    thank you again.

  • Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) using external HD - speed USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA  - what are relative speeds - how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)_

        Hi All,
I'm trying to resume regular scheduled Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) of drives using external HD (to allow off-site redundant backup storage) .
What are relative speeds of USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA ?
I suspect eSATA connection may be considerably faster … how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)?
( The quicker and easier backup protocol is, the more likely one is to use it to backup on a routine repetitive basis.)
    Thanks

Adding a USB 3.0+eSATA PCIe card, which The hatter mentions, is the best solution that I've found. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3/. The card is not cheap, but the USB 3.0 works flawlessly (which can't be assumed; ask me how I know) and the eSATA connection allows booting from the connected drive. Grant Bennet-Alder's point about HD speed is important to consider; in addition, the size of the individual files being backed up and where on the backup disk they're going will affect overall transfer speed. For example, using the USB 3.0 connection on that CalDigit card going to a Toshiba 3TB external, the transfer rate for a big file (say a virtual machine file) from an internal SSD boot drive was about 145 MB/sec while a bunch of little files might drop to 30 MB/sec and both rates decrease as an inner partition on the external is used. All told, a nearly 700 GB backup took under 1.5 hours. Using a HD as the source added almost an extra hour, though a WD external was used for that. Using a WD green drive plugged into this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/FWU3ES2HDK/ with an eSATA connection took about 2.5 hours also, but that was bootable whereas the USB 3.0 connection is not.
Another point to consider is that USB 3.0 is ubiquitous on PC's now so there's lots of price competition for externals; not so much for eSATA externals.

Firewire and esata on a single expresscard - does it exist?
I am wanting to connect two Firewire cameras and an esata external drive simultaneously. Does an expresscard exist that can help me do this??

So you are looking for an express card with 3 firewire slots? The best I've seen is 2 firewire, 1 usb.

But you can do more searching via google.

  • Getting online with Time Warner Cable (Roadrunner) cable modem

I have wasted a tremendous amount of time with Time Warner since switching from Verizon (New York City), as they are CLUELESS as to how to make a MAC connect to the modem. What settings do I use? It does not find it automatically, I know that much. And they have assured me it's not the modem, but that there's 'something wrong' with my computer. Since it worked fine with Verizon, and another Mac I have which works well in multiple locations with multiple connections also failed, I'm pretty sure there's nothing 'wrong' with my computer. Just tech support ignorance.
    Any help?
    Thanks

Setting up a local Ethernet network
    Equipment needed:
Cable/DSL modem: usually supplied by the ISP
Gateway/Router: at least a 4-port router, but you can get them with more ports if you need them. (Alternatively, you can get a switching hub to provide additional ports.)
CAT 5 Ethernet cables: one cable is needed for each device connected to the router plus one to connect the router to the cable/DSL modem.
    1. Connect the Cable/DSL modem to the router's WAN port using an Ethernet cable (CAT 5 for 10/100.)
    2. Connect each computer to the router's LAN ports using Ethernet cables. If you have network printers, etc. connect them to a LAN port on the router. If the router doesn't have enough ports, then you will need to purchase one with more ports or connect a switching hub to the router.
    3. Now, for each Mac open its Network preference pane. Select the Built-in Ethernet port for configuration. In the TCP/IP configuration window set the connection/configuration to DHCP from the dropdown menu. Set your Location dropdown menu to Automatic and the Show dropdown menu to Built-in Ethernet.
    4. Shut everything off. First, turn on the Cable/DSL modem and wait for the connect lights to indicate it has connected to the ISP. Next, turn on the router and wait to see if the Cable/DSL modem's communication status light starts to flicker. Also, if there is a status light on the router it should show a connection. Last, power up the computer. If all is well the TCP/IP control panel or Network pref pane should indicate an IP has been obtained from the router, usually in the 192.168.nnn.nnn range. If it's 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you don't really have a connection.
    5. If you have network printers connected each printer will have to be assigned its own unique IP address in the router's address range (usually 192.168.nnn.nnn.) Assign the printer(s) IP addresses above the number of computers that will be connected but within the router's DHCP address assignment range. Consult the router's documentation for that information. Consult the printer manual for how to assign an IP address to the printer. When you install the printer driver and/or Add the printer you will add it as an IP printer or LPR printer and use the IP address you assigned to the printer.
