Firewire compatibility/Which cable to buy

I have a MBP with FW 400 and FW 800 ports and I currently have a firewire 4 pin to 4 pin cable from my previous computer. Wikipedia (maybe not the most reliable) says "A FireWire 800 socket is backward-compatible with 4-pin, but not 6-pin, FireWire 400 plug." I don't really know what this means because the 4 pin plug doesn't seem to actually fit in the FW800 port.
Should I just buy a 9 pin to 4 pin cable, or is there some sort of adapter that I can buy? Will hooking up my 3 year old Sony Handycam to the FW 800 port work faster than the 400 port, or does the hardware specifically need to support FW 800?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You can buy a Firewire cable with a FW800 connector on one end and a FW400 (6 pin) connector on the other. Macs use 6 pin Firewire ports. 4-pin FW400 connectors are not the same as FW800.
Although you can connect a FW400 drive to a FW800 port with the proper cable, but it won't run any faster than FW400.

  • Which cable to buy?

I just purchased a Mac mini and a Samsung 930B. I made two unsuccessful trips to the the store to buy DVI cables. The first, a DVI-I is not the right one. I exchanged to a DVI-D and no image. What cable do I need and where do I buy it? Am I really going to gain anything by going "digital" or is my current analog fine?

DVI-D is the correct cable. Are you sure you switched the input of your monitor from analog to DVI? AFAIK, it doesn't auto-select and you need to do this manually. That may be why you had no image.

  • What cable to buy for ipad 4 to connect to TV?

    hi all ,
i have ipad 4 retina display ,now i have a composite av cable which i used for me old ipad 1 to connect to the tv to watch movies etc,now that Apple have changed the adaptor connections this cable is no longer useful ,so now i would like to know which cable to buy now for my ipad 4 to connect to my tv.
    thanks

If your TV has an HDMI input, then the onyl choice would be the
    Lightning Digital AV Adapter
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter
As I don't believe theren is a lightning to composite adapter at this time.
You may also need to buy an HDMI cable to go with it if you don't have a spare lying around.

  • Which cable should I have for my ipod with video

Hi I have ipod with video and bought the ipod fw power adapter gen, so I could charge my ipod away from my computer. I bought the wrong cable and sent it back and have received the wrong cable again. Can anyone help me and tell me which cable I should have, the cables I previously bought from apple are thin firewire cable 6-6 pin o.5m gen, and then ipod dock connector to usb 2.0.

Hi the firewire cable you mention is the one that i bought originally and it does not work with ipod video, the conection to my ipod with this cable is fine but the conection to the other end of the cable does not fit the charger, I checked the link that you both mention and it actually says that it is not compatable. The charger I bought says it works with ipod video thats why I am so confused to know what cable to buy and have made to mistakes already. If you can help me Id be delighted because its driving me nuts.

  • Which cable do I need to connect my Mac Book Pro to my Panasonic PV-GS150 video camera for transferring video to iMovie?

which cable do I need to connect my Mac Book Pro to my Panasonic PV-GS150 video camera for transferring video to iMovie?

    I totally understand.
Check some things from here, I have 2 and they have been great so far.
Check here, lots of storage and reasonable prices. Also great support, you get to speak to a person
Clean off your on the G5 drive and off you go.
I suggest buying a second drive and setting it up for a back up, Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper (both "bootable" back up) All searchable on the web.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/elite+pro
You can talk to a person for REAL advice, Phone: 800.275.4576  Ask about exporting to your G5 and and exporting to your existing OSX, you may only need a small inexpensive drive for this.
Quick delivery and willing to help.
Hope this makes you back up and running :-)
Do get a back up drive, as it is not ""whether my drive will fail, as much as "when my drive fails"
    All the best

  • Can someone please tell me which cable is used to connect a Macbook Pro to a TV.

I want to connect my laptop to the tv but i don't know which cable is used and where to buy it..

On my 2011 Macbook Pro (and my sister's) mdp does pass audio.
I seem to recall that some (older?) mdp-hdmi adaptors wouldn't pass audio.
The moshi one I have here passes audio, and another one I have does too -- I think it's made by RocketFish.
I see that the one at Apple Store is moshi -- it lists the digital audio feature:

  • Which program to buy and use?

I am trying to debate which program to use. I am trying to choose among Final Cut Express, Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and the new iMovie 11.
I am use to Aperture for my stills and some have told me then it is best to go with the Final Cut Express. Others said keep it simple.
Last time I did home video editing it was with Pinnacle on the WinTel.
So, what do I need to do? I have some already edited Home VHS tapes I need to move to digital before it is too late. I have a Sony 8 mm Digital camcorder with firewire 400. I need to transfer these and 8mm analog tapes to a non-tape format. I can use the camcorder to input the info into my MacBook Pro using a 1 tb firewire 800 scrap drive.
Next, I would like to edit and then create DVDs for about 12 years of videos.
How many tapes to do? About fifteen Of various formats.
I figure the learning curve will be the hardest with FCE, then Elements and finally iMovie 11. I was told in the FCE forum that iMovie do not handle DV video very well.
Any suggestions would be helpful. The plan is to buy the software soon and play with it and at Christmas holiday I will start the long process.
    Thank you in advance!
    Summary:
MBP 2008 (late) mac OS 4 GB RAM 800 firewire port which I will connect to a LaCie 1 TB rugged HDD. I am planning storing the working and finished files before burning. Scratch Disc (formatted to Mac OS Extended). I need to go digital with my home movies. I have VHS tapes (already edited), Sony 8 mm analogue and digital tapes (need to edit). I want to do editing & DVD burning.

I have some already edited Home VHS tapes I need to move to digital before it is too late.
I have used all 3 programs that you mentioned (and others).
iMovie 11 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
I was told in the FCE forum that iMovie do not handle DV video very well.
Not true for iMovie 02 through iMovie 06.
There is a significant regresssion in quality of the image between iMovie 06 and iMovie 08 through 11.
The difference is the single field processing used by iMovie 11 (for faster editing) and the fact that it throws out every other horizontal line.
Final Cut Express and Adobe Premiere Elements 9 will give full quality but are more complicated to use.
In my opinion iMovie 06 with iDVD 09 or iDVD 11 is way to go.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 is a 100% "lossless" combination and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!
You will also need a A/D coverter. (Like the Grassvalley ADVC300)
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11. VERY easy and 100% "lossless"

  • Equium M50: Which cable can I use to connect to TV?

I want to hook my computer up to my TV. I went into my local computer shop but they showed me about 5 different cables and I had no idea which one would work best or work at all. Can anybody advise me on which cable would work for my computer the Equium M50-192? Or can I even buy such a cable online?
    Thanks in advance.

The cable you need is S-Video however not all TV/Video equipment provide full S-Video support resulting in a black and white image. This minor issue can be resolved using a S-Video to Composite adapter such as one sold by Maplin at the sacrifice of quality

  • What cable to buy to hook up my macbook pro to pc input

Hi, I recently purchased a Samsung HDTV and a macbook pro. The Samsung has a PC input in the back, so I was wondering which cable I need to buy to hook these two up? Thank you.

Depends on what type of connecotr the PC Input is. If it's a DVI connector (looks like the video connector on your MBP) all you need is a DVI-DVI cable. If it's a VGA connector you can either buy a DVI-DVI cable and use the DVI-VGA adapter that came with your MBP else a DVI-VGA cable.

Which cable should use for Sony DV(IEEE 1394)connect to iMac ?

If your iMac has just the FireWire 800 connection, you will need the 9 pin to 4 pin cable.

If your iMac has the FireWire 400 connection, you will need the 6 pin to 4 pin cable.

  • Which cable between 07 Macbookpro and Philips Plasma?

Which cable to use to get optimum definition from macbookpro (games, Hulu) in OSX or XP/bootcamp? Currently using very long dvi to hdmi cable but get a lot of static and shimmer on tv, regardless of settings. Tend to want to run at highest viable definition. Actually does a bit better in bootcamp/xp configuration but prefer osx. Do not want to use second mac as external screen. Want the Big Picture. Would dvi to vga work better? Firewire 800?

This was pretty much the first hit I got when researching this topic.

  • Transfer: early 2008 Macbook to new Macbook Pro Retina. Which cable?

Which cable do I use for a transfer between these two? I want to use Migration Assistant.

Or you can use a Firewire cable and FW > Thunderbolt adapter (if your machine has a FW port). I believe FW is a bit faster than the Ethernet, but could be wrong.
FWIW, you would want to use Setup Assistant - available only once during the initial setup of the new Mac - rather than Migration Assistant later, as that will duplicate your user account/folder and depost some duplicates which you'll need to throw out later.

Ah, my bad. I took it you were either coming back to BT or was explaining to us that you were already a BT customer and was thinking of taking out BTVision and was wondering what cables were needed. The reason I mentioned scart and hdmi was purely to let you know that the only additional cost would of been an HDMI cable.
