Firewire connection: Mac OS X (macbook pro) and Windows 7 (hp dv65540)

I have bought firewire 9-4 pin, and I connected both computers. But neither Mac nor Windows 7 are not visible to each other.I think it should work on the principle plug&play.
I know that with writting files from mac os X there are some special conditions, but for just reading it should be rady just after plugin, or??
PLEASE HELP!

You can certainly network Macs with firewire. Once connected, the other computer would show up as an available server. You must have file sharing enabled. As far as connecting to a PC, I don't know. A quick search turned up this page:

Connect Mac-mini to Macbook Pro to iPad 2?

Has ANYONE found a use out of connecting any apple device that isn't an iPhone?
I own a new Macbook Pro, iPad 2 and I just bought a mac mini for my flatscreen. I connected all three together via Bluetooth but after they connect and form a path they are no longer connected. They have a special path laid out for each device but they aren't actively connected.
At the same time I have a Bluetooth track pad and keyboard for the mac mini and they are both connected and working. Is there any way to have an active connection between the Mac mini, iPad 2 and Macbook Pro and if so is there anyway for it to be useful? File sharing, extended screen or anything?

Probably easier with WIFI on your local network. Also, it depends on what you need it do with the Mini. OSX already has a screen sharing option that allows you to share screens and file sharing option to share files between each other, so if you want the Macbook to control the Mini for your media playback, you can. But then, it's probably easier for you to control all this via your iPad 2. The software you want to use it called Splashtop. It's a remote screen sharing software that not only duplicates the screen on both Macbook and Mini if both machines run the Splashtop server, but it also do sound as well. This way, you can use the iPad 2 to control your Mini, browse the net, watch Netflix, copy files, download movies from iTunes etc. I do this with my iPad 1 and my old Macbook Core 2 Duo attached to my flatscreen. Skipped Apple TV 2.

Connecting Mac mini to MacBook Pro retina?

Wireless Router issues with MacBook Pro and Windows XP laptops

hello,
I have a d-link wireless router and I have a MacBook Pro and a Windows XP laptops. My issue is that I have to keep rebooting either the router or the modem (which I both replaced) and it still does not work right. Now can mac and windows work simultaneously through a wireless router (d-link) with no issues?

My problem is that every time I log off either computer, and when I start it back up up again I have to reconfigure all over again for both laptops to get connected to the internet. I called the d-link people and they pretty much said if i still had problem to go their web sites and download their firmware (which I have that version) so I am running out of options because I just can't turn either of them on with out reconfiguring it. Now I am using WPA on them. Could that be the issue? But right now I do not know. This is my first mac and I am getting a little irritated by this. Overall I like the mac except for this little issue. Does that help?

Firewire connection to G4 from MacBook Pro

I want to connect my new MacBook Pro (Version 10.5.7) to my old Apple G4 tower so that I can use the DVD on the MacBook to install software on the G4 (the G4 only has a CD drive). I have connected the two via firewire but the G4 icon does not appear on the MacBook's desktop. I have tried restarting several times but nothing works. I connected the MacBook to an external back-up drive via firewire and that works just fine. Any suggestions?

You have a PowerMac G4 with only a CD-ROM drive? That's technically a "Power Mac G4 - PCI" (vs. the - AGP models which were out around the same time). According to this kbase article:

...your G4 cannot be a target in FW-TDM (it's about the only G4 that cannot). That's why it's not showing up. However, it can be a host (i.e. you can boot the MBP as the target). If an optical disc is mounted in the MBP when it is shut down, it should also show up on the G4's desktop. That's the method Apple recommends for installing Tiger Server on an older Xserve (option 2):

Macbook Pro and Windows-connected Canon MX860 printer

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum.
I have a Canon MX860 wireless printer that is connected to a Windows computer and can be used by any Windows computer on my network. One of my users has recently added a MacBook Pro (Mac OSx 10.6.2, MacBook Pro 5,5) and we aren't having the same luck.
I tried the IP tab, using both the IP option on the dropbox and the second option (the machine's not in front of me right now). I entered the IP address and tried selecting the Canon MX860 software, but when I hit Add, it lowered and raised a box too quickly for me to see it. This didn't work at all.
I then tried the Windows tab, and it found the networked printer. I selected the Canon MX860 Series driver. It seemed to setup alright, and didn't throw up an error, but it just wouldn't communicate with the printer. Actually, there were two printers found: Canon MX86 and Canon MX86.2. Apparently, the 86.2 is a Fax machine. When set up as the printer, if I tried to print something, it caused a warning message on the Windows machine saying "fax machine not configured" or some such. So, the Mac can communicate with the printer. It just won't print when pointed to the MX86.
I got the latest drivers for the printer today, and even tried downloading the IJ Network Tool on the Mac. It seems like installing software on the Mac is only supposed to be done if the printer is to be connected to it, but I'm not sure. I don't know much about Macs at all at this point.
I'm probably not making this too clear, but any help would be appreciated. Just let me know what other information I need to provide.

WIP: My adventures with 2011 MacBook Pro and Windows 8.1 including seconday HDD

So I've just lost about 3 days of my life trying to install Windows 8.1 (my preferred) operating system on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro.
I feel that I've learnt a lot and hopefully can share my experiences to speed a few of you along the process. This is my own experience please let me know if anything I have documented is not true and I will revise for completeness
What my initial goal was to have a dual HD set up with an SSD running both Mac OSX and Windows 8.1 (via Bootcamp) with a 2ndry HD in places of the optical (DVD) drive for shared storage.
I have tried all/some of the following:
Win 8.1 ISO from the MS site: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
USB created using Rufus for Bios and EFI boot
DVD created using Windows 8.1 (can't remember how)
Yosemite USB created using: Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support
There are 2 main options when installing Windows:
Bios
EFI
Both have different pros and cons, which Im going to try and document here:
Bios
Full driver support via Bootcamp download
Slower (mainly boot time, not by much though)
Not quite as "native" as some may prefer
Limited number of partitions??
EFI
Fast
Native
Does not support video driver properly (no dual screen)
Audio does not work (says Failed to start device)
Here are some random facts I know
Windows DVD will only boot from optical drive when connected internally. If plugged in via external USB it stops at black screen with flashing cursor and doesnt progress
Using 5HT-2a's method on Redit (see below) and the EFI install, I get the Cx0000005 cannot find source media error and cannot install
Hacking the Bootcamp tool to create a Windows 8 ISO with all the drivers works (see link below) but when using it in EFI it crashes repeatedly during install so you never can complete the process (I think this is due to the video drivers) and therefore can't run Bootcamp assistant thus get proper trackpad support
Using lion10's method (below) for tweaking a standard Mac partitioned HD I was able to get past the cannot install Windows error ("windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is of the GPT partition style") and install Windows using EFI

Bootcamp drivers 2 versions depending on Mac:
Older Macs: Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621
Newer Macs (most 2013+): Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640

What I ended up doing (so far)
I'm not 100% sure of the state of my disk when I got to where I ended up but I had previous completed the GDisk and DISKPART methods from 5HT-2a and lion10's methods. I was using a 128gb SSD
I then decided to start from the top (as I had previous installed Win 8.1 on the original HD using DVD)
So I ran the Yosemite installer (via USB) and used the partition tab in Disk Utility to repartition the disk into 2 partitions, 1 for OSX and 1 (ExFat/NTFS) for Windows
I then booted in Bios (Windows, not EFI) using the Windows 8.1 DVD using the DVD plugged in internally (wouldnt work using USB enclosure)
Installed Windows to the partition I created (probably the 4th one)
After Windows installed, ran the Bootcamp set up program
Reran Yosemite installer and installed Yosemite
Swapped out the optical drive for a larger HD (7200rpm) and formatted it with HFS+

Wireless Printing from MacBook Pro and Windows 7 laptop through iMac

I have looked everywhere I can think and have not found a solution to this problem:
I just bought a 21.5" iMac and a Windows 7 laptop. I already had a 15" Macbook Pro.
I have an HP C5280 printer that is now connected via USB to the iMac. All computers use my wireless home network using a Netgear N wireless router.
I cannot figure out how to print wirelessly from either the MacBook or laptop through the iMac. Printer software is installed on all computers and printer sharing is enabled on the iMac.

Macbook Pro and Windows Professional XP

I bought Windows Pro XP for my Macbook Pro. While going through similar discussions I've found myself confused as to whether or not I can even run Windows Pro XP. Can I or can't I. It hasn't arrived yet and if I need to buy the home edition rather than pro, the sooner the better. Thanx.

that answers part of my question. The VPN disk his IT dept. gave me will get him from my computer to HIS comptuer at work. That's the only way he can use his program... it needs to stay on his network there, so even if I had access it would not solve the problem.
So, then all he needs is a way to get into his computer at work because he will be on the network there to do what he has to do...
Does this then mean, I don't need the windows? That I can use one of these other programs you suggested for him to connect to his office computer and then once he's in that's all that matters? (they did say for this to work his computer at work needs to remain on, so he'll be connecting directly to the pc on his desk)
I really appreciate this help. I know next to nothing about Windows - Been a Mac User since the Mac SE - and unfortunatley he (the husband) knows next to nothing about computers in general. His IT people just go "oh, you've got a mac... it won't work"... So when I read that the new Intel based computers can run windows they got all excited and sent me a disk and a full page of instructions... here I am trying to figure out how to make it all work.

Network issue between Macbook Pro and Windows

I have a Macbook Pro 2012 model running 10.8.5. Also have a Win7 PC.
When both are connected to the home router via wire (or the Windows on wireless), everything is fine from network connectivity point of view. However if I move the Mac to Wireless (either 2.4 or 5GHz), Mac can't ping/reach out the Win7 computer and vice versa. Win7 can be wired or wireless, does not matter.
I checked not only ping, but http, https, vnc protocols. None of them works when Mac is on WiFi.
I also have printer, smartphones/tablets connected to the local lan and all are accessible either from the Mac or the Windows (including the home router and internet behind it).
First I thought it should be a Windows problem, so tried to shut the firewall down on that side, but did not behaved differently. Firewall is down on the Mac all the time. And firewall was somehow ticked out with the wired test when the Mac received pings from the Windows computer.
The other reason why I thought about Windows, when I boot it up, I can ping it for a couple of minutes. Then ping breaks.
Due to the 100% success of the cable test, now I started wondering if the Mac has some misconfiguration. Any suggestion I should check?

One more comment. Wired connection seem to be stable neither. I have ping running to the Windows computer and after a couple of minutes, it gets broken.
However if I have both WiFi and cable connection to the home router and disconnect from cable (after ping is broken), I get the network to the Windows comptuer back. Nothing serious on the network change, I just get 192.168.1.x instead of 192.168.1.y as IP).
During this network switch I do nothing with the Windows computer.
This is not valid if I want to connect to the Windows computer via Microsoft sharing (smb://192.168.1.x), then it immediately breaks the connection. Can't get it back until Windows is restarted.
Getting lost...

HP Print Software for MacBook Pro and Windows 7 gone awry on HP OfficeJet Pro 8600

Almost one year ago today I wrote a post about my first problem with HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 N911. Today I write my last.
I have an HP OJP 8600, with option Tray 2 included, and auto feed included. My system test computers are:
1. Apple MacBook Pro, OS X 9.5, HP software is the only 3rd party software.
2. HP Laptop, Windows 7.
The OJP wireless radio gave up, so I cannot run it wirelessly. It is connected by ethernet to my router. All five of my computers can use. All of the functions of the printer are usable. For example: it prints, it scans, it copies, it faxes. All functions working. My problem is with the HP software download to the Apple and to the HP Laptop.
I would like to be able to use all of the feature settings when I print. But alas, I cannot. Both the Apple and the HP Laptop have a similar appearing window that opens when you choose to print something. In theory, you are supposed to be able to control a range of paper types and quality, print type and quality, and (in my case with the two trays) what tray to use to select the paper.
I regret neither of the computers perform these functions. And all of the mistakes that I find on the Apple computer I find on the HP Laptop Windows 7 computer.
I don't have the time to test every combination. But I think the table below will help you get an idea of what the problem is with the software that HP sends offshore for maintenance.

In summary the new HP Print software for Apple and Windows 7 computers has identical programming mistakes on both operating systems. Under no circumstances can I use the MAX DPI setting.
The user cannot use the features that are built in to the HP software because the paper selections override the locked tray, the print quality, and the unusually small list of HP selection of papers.
It is time to invoke my warrenty rights. There are too many systemic problems with the software and the device. I don't have any more time to act as an unpaid system test analyst for HP.
Who do I contact to use my warrenty before it runs out in a few weeks?

Those are not programming mistakes, but those are limitations of the product, please check the printer specifications below:

As you may find under Paper-handling specifications > Paper tray capacities, Tray 2 only support Plain Paper.
Maximum DPI is only only supported on Photo Paper, therefore those limitations are applicable.. these limitations are also listed on the Printing Specifications section above, Maximum DPI is listed as 4800 by 1200 dpi:
Color print resolution: HP enhanced photo quality with Vivera inks (up to 4800 by 1200 dpi Optimized on HP Premium Plus photo papers with 1200 x 1200 input dpi)
As well that can be find listed within the Print photos on photo paper or the Print borderless documents sections, you may simply search for Maximum DPI within the user guide as a reference:

Those are not an issues with the printer but those expected limitations fully meet the product specification.

Printing issue between macbook pro and windows 7 pc

I am trying to print from my macbook pro to an HP printer, scanner and copier all in one unit. It worked perfect with my old xp pc but with the windows 7 I can't get them to communicate with each other. I was told by geek squad at best buy that I probably need to get a different router. they suggesed airport. My would like to know which one I need. I want to print to the printer that is attached to my windows 7 machine from my macbook pro. I also have couple other xp machines that are used from time to time and I need to be able to print from them as well. any suggestions??? frustrated in Birmingham

MacBook Pro and Windows Media Player

So many of my former sites for news and humor use Windows Media Player almost exclusively. Although I have WMA on my MacBook Pro, it does not work for sites such as CNN and Comedy Central. I have tried dowloading the player again and flip for mac (which apparently does not work for intel Macs). If anyone knows a way around this, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Make sure you follow the installation instructions. I have used Flip4Mac to view CNN videos on my father's Intel Mac. I've never tried it with Comedy Central. Note that you can subscribe to Comedy Central's Motherload via iTunes podcasts.

MacBook Pro and Windows

I'm absolutely new in these discussions so really wasn't sure where to put this. Please feel free to move it if it's in the wrong place!
I start college next month and a new notebook is on the agenda. I plan on getting a Macbook Pro in the next couple of weeks. The university has strongly recommended Windows/PC notebooks, however, due to the Windows software that must be used as part of my college course.
What I want to know is, how exactly, if at all possible can I ensure that windows software will work on my new MBP?
As you can only expect after six years of using Macs I'm not going to return to PCs!

To clarify this statement, you cannot use any Mac OS X program in Windows. However, you can access all files in Mac OS X with the proper third-party program.
I have copied below my advice for the current version of Boot Camp.
As for your Windows programs, they will all run flawlessly on your Boot Camp Windows partition. In fact, they will run better than they would on a normal PC, as there is no BS bloat ware and recovery partitions backing things up every ten seconds. I have run intense applications from AutoCAD to Avid Media Composer without any issues. You will love it!

I have just written some general advice on Boot Camp, with a Windows XP partition, which I also highly recommend, herein.
First, you should read the Boot Camp manual carefully and follow it in detail.

Second, you should format your Windows partition using the NTFS format. Fat 32 will not support files larger than 3.5 GB.
I would recommend a minimum partition size of 40 GB.
To access your Mac hard drive from Windows, you would want to check out MacDrive 7, which is really good.

Under NTFS, you will be able to read your Windows drive from your Mac drive.
However, if you want to write to it, you will need the following software from Paragon.

If you go with XP, and to save money, look for Microsoft OEM versions of Windows XP. These are the same as retail versions of Windows, but you will pay far less, i.e. $129 vs. $399.
However, do not go for manufacturer OEM copies of Windows, like from Dell or HP, as they will not work properly.
