Firewire connections to external HDs cause Kernal Panics

I know that this subject has been raised already but would just like to add my voice to the topic.
I have to Mac Pros and each have two external Western Digital MyBooks connected via firewire 400 in a mirrored raid setup. This ran on both machines without issue in Tiger, however if I connect any of the drives in Leopard with firewire will result in a kernal panic.
When I connect the two drives via USB then all is well again, again on both machines. Obviously there's an issue with the firewire interface and external hard drives.
Anyone like to add to this?

Hardware or software can cause the kernel panic. You don't have to waste time and zero out your drive. Just isolate the cause whether it be software or hardware then deal with it.
If you decide to re-install OSX then don't add anything but that monitor and see what happens.

  • Could external monitor cause kernal panic?

Hi there, I'm trying to track down the cause of a couple of nasty kernal panics that have caused me to have to zero my hard disk and re-install twice in the last couple of weeks.
The last panic log I have (not certain it contains info from the last panic) has no reference to software as far as I can tell, I checked the memory with the apple hardware test and a freeware app called Rember, both tests came up fine.
I use a cheap and cheerful LCD monitor for a split screen Logic Pro setup. I noticed that the grey screen with the apple logo distorts while OSX is booting when the extra monitor is plugged in...... It's made me wonder if that is the source of my troubles, could that be the case?

  • Booting from external device causes kernal panic

I am suddenly unable to boot my first generation MacPro 1,1 from any external device. I have tried my Leopard install DVD, a USB thumb drive, and an external hard drive. All of these result in a Kernal Panic. I was able to boot into the hardware test from my original cd that came with the computer. The hardware test reported no problems.
Here is the kernal panic I get every time:

I removed my Nvidia 8800gt video card and replaced it with the Nvidia 7300 that came with the computer. I can now boot from external drives. I guess there is some conflict with the 8800gt.

  • Ordering iPhoto book causes kernal panic

I replaced an external drive that failed. Data recovered and put onto the new drive included my iPhoto Libraries.
I have a library for creating books, and I have just created one. When I order the book, it 'connects' and begins to 'assemble book' but never gets beyond 14 of my 24 pages. The computer either freezes entirely and I have to manually shut down, or I get the black screen overlay telling me to restart my computer immediately (kernal panic).
Have read in iMac discussions re: kernal panics, and have repaired disks and permissions. Everything else works fine except the book ordering in iPhoto.
    Should I reinstall iPhoto?

    Beverly:
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. If that doesn't help make a backup copy of the library and then rebuild it by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
A workaround would be to boot into Safe Mode and try ordering the book.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto causes kernal panic after a few minutes.

    Hello!
I've recently discovered that having iPhoto open for more than a few minutes causes my entire computer to kernal panic and I have to restart. Sometimes my iphoto libraries are unrecoverable and I have to create new ones. Any help on fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, James. Before trying to blow out the machine, did you release the keyboiad latches and flip the keyboard back onto the wrist rests to expose some of the Powerbook's interior? And did you then replace the keyboard, turn the machine over, remove the bottom pan and blow out the fully exposed underside too? If you didn't open things up this way, even a really powerful air jet couldn't have done much good at all.
If you didn't, and you want to try it now, instructions are here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide
There are three different Tibook series and some differences among them, but the keyboard and bottom pan removal instructions are the same for all. Be sure to use the right screwdriver for the bottom-pan screws — it really is required. You'll strip the very soft heads of the screws if you don't.
While you have the hood up, so to speak, it would be a good idea to tighten every screw you can see inside the machine, top and bottom. Many of the screws in Tibooks have a habit of loosening with time and handling, and that can lead to a huge variety of strange problems. It's possible that a loose screw is directly responsible for your PB's flaky behavior. Tightening them up also makes your PB's chassis more rigid, and thus less prone to its internal connections working loose — another thing that often happens in Tibooks.
I agree that it sounds as though your problem is heat-related. But the Powerbook isn't actually overheating: if it were, it would be going to sleep instead of KPing. More likely there is some connection or microscopically-cracked solder joint making or breaking when it shouldn't as the machine heats up and parts expand and move.

  • External 1440p display kernal panics in 10.9

It's a 2008 iMac connecting to a DVI-D only 2560x1440p monitor, using the old MiniDVI - DVI adapter. Kernal panics when plugged in. Anyone know why?

  • IMac won't Boot using FireWire connection on external Hard Drive?

    Hello,
I Have an iMac 24" 2.16ghz 3GB RAM with a 1Tb Western Digital external Hard Drive.
I'm running my iMac of an external Hard Drive as my internal drive is faulty. Currently this set up works best for me as i can 'piggy back' off the University's computers.
When i hit the option key on start up the computer doesn't 'see' the Hard Drive when it's connected via it's FireWire port. Using the USB port works fine.
I know the Hard Drive's FireWire connection works as i previously used it as a back up drive.
As i use Final Cut 7 as my main application working via USB isn't really a practical option..
Can anyone shed some light on what the issue might be?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Daniel

Try doing a SMC reset in additional to what Apple recommends in the following Apple Advice letter.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1151?viewlocale=en_US
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Empty Trash Causes Kernal Panic

When I go to empty the trash, it begins to delete a few items, then the screen turns gray and I have to manually power off my iMac. When I boot back into OS X I see panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001E6D3E): jnl: transaction too big (8385024 >= 8388096 bytes, bufsize 4096, tr 0x3b96fb0 bp 0x36d25460) I've tried booting off the Install Discs, doing a repair disc and repair permissons. Repairs were made for both. I'm still getting the kernal panic. Is this just a bug in OS X since 8385024 is not greater than or equal to 8388096. Has anyone else seen this?

Basically I went through my trash at the terminal level and did sudo rm -rf and deleted files. I continued to do this and eventually hit a file that is causing the panic. I've tried to also delete this file at the terminal level from the OS X disc but still get the same kernal panic. I've pulled this one file out of trash and no am able to empty out my trash as normal. I just have one file that I cannot delete.

  • Safari causing kernal panics and random shutdowns and overheating.

My original Inel macbook pro is getting rather sick and I am hoping to hold out for the new 15 inches when they eventually unpdate.
However Safari is causig all kinds of hangs restarts kernal panics overheating with my machine and yet if I use google chrome for the exact same web sites these same problems are not present.  I much prefer to be able to keep using safari and I realise that I haev not got the most up to date software since Lion is not supported on my machine but it is as up todate as snow leaopard allows.
I also realise that a more than 5 year old machine is doing very well especially since it is rarely off. It has outlasted 2 timecapsules and countless airport express but the anomyly between 2 browsers is weird. I doubt this has a solution but maybe the odd apple tech who read this might find it a challenge to know why one browser causes heart issues but another doesn't.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • USB Devices Cause Kernal Panic

    Hi Everyone,
Ok, So on my White MacBook 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo when I plug a device into either of the USB ports the computer goes into a kernal panic. It has the screen that says press the power button to turn off your computer. The funny thing, is that it only seems to be certain types of devices: Printers, and Jumpdrives. The mouse and keyboard don't do that, and neither does the iPhone. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • External Display Causing Kernel Panic

I have had a Samsung monitor hooked up to my ~2008 iMac (Intel; see below for more information) for about 3 months and I've had no problems.  A week ago, I started getting the "You Need to Restart your Computer" screen due to a kernel panic.  I followed Apple's directions for troubleshooting a kernel panic (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742), and I narrowed the problem down to my external Samsung display.
The kernel panic happens every time my external display is connected and the screen saver has been on for about 8-10 minutes.  I only get a kernel panic when the external display is connected.  See below for my computer information and the kernel panic log.  How can I fix this problem?

Solution: The GPU heat sink temperature sensor was faulty.  I couldn't figure out what part number the temperature sensor was, so I just ordered a new GPU heat sink off e-bay for $12.  The heat sink assembly contains the temperature sensor.  I installed the heat sink (including removing/applying thermal paste), and voila!  The kernel panics are gone.  The faulty heat sink temp sensor was causing the temp. to read hotter than it actually was, so when it read too hot (GPU diode ~120 Celsius), I got a kernel panic.
After I installed the new heat sink (with new GPU heatsink temp. sensor), the GPU temperatures read normal, and the Apple Hardware Test showed no problems (before it was giving an error code of 4SNS/1/40000000:TG0H).
Ahh, the sweet satisfaction of fixing this problem myself for $12 without ever having to deal with Apple.

  • Lost Firewire connection to external monitor??

I cuurently use a CanopusADVC110 to firewire from FCEHD to my external monitor.
Everything was fine until yesterday having captured some footage from VHS via the ADVC110 to my project, i then unplugged the VHS and since i have no visuals or audio on my external monitor?
I have tryed unplugging everything, restarting, shuting down, and still i don't even have the option to go firewire in the RT options on the timeline?
Any suggestions most welcome and thanks to all in advance.
    Ali

    Ali,
Check how you have your monitor connected to your ADVC; did you accidently disconnect your monitor when you disconnected your VHS deck/cam.
Also, the ADVC toggles between DV-in and Analog-in, sometimes on its own. It had to be in Analog-in mode when you captured from your VHS deck; it may still be in that mode. Use the AV/DV button on the top left of the case - make sure it is set for DV-in if you want to view on your monitor.

  • Connecting USB external HDD causes temperature to soar

Having had my broken Mac Mini fixed, I'm now resuming usage. One "interesting" fact I've noticed is that whenever an external USB HDD is switched on, the Mac's temperature soars. It was sitting, according to smcFanControl, at c. 34C whilst doing general browsing. Turning on the HDD and (over half an hour) the temperature rose to 64C. Ejecting the HDD (without even powering it off) had an instantaneous effect and the temperature plummeted back down to what it had been (first 10C in a minute, second 10C in five further minutes, etc).
I'm guessing that the second CPU core kicked in, or similar, causing the disproportionate thermal increase? Or is this a fault of some kind? It's completely repeatable.

It seems possible that the Mini kicked into high gear to do Spotlight indexing on the drive. You could go to System Preferences > Spotlight and designate that drive as one that you don't want indexed and see if that makes a difference.
If it doesn't, then my next best guess would be that the external drive is drawing power from the usb or firewire bus, and this is heating up the Mini's internal power supply -- though I admit that is a long shot.

  • Time machine backups to external drive causing kernel panics

    Hi,
I am using an early 2011 MBP with a 1TB WD My Passport as a Time Machine backup disc.
Time Machine has been working fine until 2 days ago when I tried to perform its backup to disc.
It performed the usual backup but only up to 50MB of 2GB before it caused a KP.
Tried it using a different USB port with the same results.
    Here's the report:

  • Macbook connected to LCD TV causing kernel panics

    Macbook 2.1
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    OSx 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I've had my macbook for almost 5 years, first Mac I ever purchased, and have told EVERYBODY since then how I've never had one single problem with it, virus, or anything.  My desktop PC would crash about every 6 months prior to getting my Macbook & the employee at Best Buy talked me into getting a Mac.  I've been EXTREMELY satisified in every way with it until now.
I finally bought a mini-dvi to hdmi cord to hook up my 70' Sony Bravia as a secondary display, but ever since hooking it up I'm getting constant kernel panics where I'm forced to restart my computer.  This happens atleast 10 times a day and sometimes as much as every 10 minutes.  It's not the TV as I have the same problem connecting to my 44' Philips TV.  Is there any fix to this? Or am I just constrained to only using the Macbook screen connected to my laptop?  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had this & other types of troubles on my Mac Mini 2011 (OS Lion 10.7.3) connected to Samsung UE55D6530 via HDMI. There were kernel panics, there were system hang-ups when i could not move mouse or press keys on keyboard.
I spent few days searching over internet and found out that the problem with HDMI port is well known for at least two years. People say that it is due to HDMI sync lost between TV and Mac. People say that Gefen HDMI Detective solves the issue.
I have to say that it is big shame on Apple that they do not fix the problem known for years.
Meanwhile i noticed that in my case all troubles happened when iTunes was running. I need it running for home sharing feature. Obviously when i'm at TV i watch it via XBMC. But when i'm in bed or in the kitchen, i use iPad to watch movies via home sharing. So i needed iTunes running all the time.
The solution which worked for me was to put iTunes into a virtual machine. No crashes and hang-ups since then so far.
In my configuration all media is on Mac Mini HDD. Parallels VM (i'm sure any other will work too) hosts only OS and iTunes. iTunes media folder is mounted on VM from Mac HDD so that iTunes inside VM works with files on Mac Mini HDD.
