Firewire device control with analogue capture?

Please please help.
I am trying to capture HDV footage (shot on a JVC HD251) in SD via our KONA LH.
It seems farily easy to get the KONA to downcovert but i don't currently have any device control so therrefore have no timecode.
On the AJA website this article seems to suggest that it is possible to have device control over firewire whilst capturing via the KONA.
http://www.aja.com/html/supportkonaLHedoc.html and navigate to the WHITEPAPER: HDV Workflow
Any help would be more than very welcome!
Thanks in advance
Mike

sadly we are currently using our JVC HD251E camera which does not have RS422 as it is not a deck.
it is the device control via firewire that is hinted upon in the whitepaper from the link at the top of this post that i am most interested in as it would be really useful if it is in fact possible.
We don't intend on using our cameras as a decks for much longer and are looking at the possibilites of purchasing the BR-HD50 which has RS422 which will be ideal.
Even with this we will still be using our Kona to downconvert...unless the JVC deck can downconvert via the firewire...which i guess i will only find out when trying it!
Thanks for the suggestion all the same...but please please someone tell me if this is indeed possible. I don' tunderstand why AJA would hint at it if it is not possible.

  • Simple device control with LabVIEW 7

    Hello,
I have been a LabVIEW user for about 6 months and feel very comfortable with the "basics." I have used V7.1 with SCB-68 connectors as well as SCXI-1100 systems. I have written vi's that take voltage in from a variety of devices and produce good results.
For the next phase of my "education" I would like to build simple vi's that do things like turn motors or pumps on and off. After that, I would like to be able to use a vi to say, adjust the speed of a DC motor.
Are there vi's or links at the NI site that can help. I have searched the site extensively but have not found anything that propels the user from the passive analog input stage to using LabVIEW to interact with devices in the lab.
    Please advise.
    Thanks!

Unless you're using the SCXI-1600 to drive the SCXI system, you should
have a DAQ card that has a couple analog outputs on it. If you do have
have the SCXI-1600, you'll need to get hold of a DAQ card that has
analog out's on it. Check out NIs M Series of cards or the SCXI analog output cards.
Once you have something that generatea a voltage, open the Example
Finder in LabVIEW (Help>Find Examples) ans double click through
    "Hardware Input/Output>DAQmx>Analog Generation>Voltage" and
you'll see several examples showing you how to create a voltage. These
examples all have the source code included so you can see how
everything is done. Use then as a starting point and save them
somewhere else if yo modify one.

I've seen one other post about this and I've tried the responses to it: trash prefs, rebuild permissions, reboot the computer (let it rest and uplug), trash quicktime receipts and reinstall, uninstall AJA software and reinstall.
The only thing I haven't tried is reinstalling my OS.
    I'm on FCP HD.
I can capture and print to tape as an uncontrollable device. But I need to edit to tape tomorrow using the RS-422 to my digibeta deck via the AJA IO. It has worked in the recent past (last month), but in the past two weeks I can't control my deck.
Also, I get the message "This computer does not have any serial ports required by this protocol" when I try to set up a new RS-422 AV device control setting.
    Help!

Jerry, I can't thank you enough. I still have a few hairs left on my head thanks to you.
I downgraded my AJA firmware and that did the trick.
I had been on the phone with AJA last week tryingto fix this problem and we had tried everything except that. You know, the trash quicktime receipts, trash prefs, hard re-boot, etc.
They were stumped and finally decided it was a Mac problem not an AJA problem. Ha! (Very nice folks though.)
Your's was an answer I didn't find anywhere else in all my searching of forums.
    Thanks again!

  • Device Control Capture from Beta SP Deck into a G-4, Using Firewire ???

    Hello,
I have been told by many people that it is possible to capture video with device control from a Beta SP deck, if you have the correct setup. But no one seems to be able to tell me exactly how using a G-4 Dual 1.25, or G-5 single processor computer. What I'm hoping to do is establish a serial interface that will allow for device control from a RS-422 circumstance. I'm hoping that I can do this, and still capture using DV- I don't want to have to resort to using a video capture card, for an assortment of reasons that I won't get into.
Question: Is there anyone out there converting video from a beta sp deck to firewire in FCP, using device control, and if so, what is your set up?
    Thanks!

  • Unable to initialize capture device and device control in HDV

I shot with a Sony HVR-Z1U/Z1N and am using a Sony HDV 1080i tape deck to digitize.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and installed FCP Pro 5 on it. After getting over some time code issues we were chugging along, when on the 4th tape the image on the log and capture screen suddenly dissapeared (I could get audio and could see the image on the tape deck). Well after taking the tape out, checking and rechecking it I popped it back in and ever since then, I have been getting this error mssg "Unable to initialize capture device and device control."
I have tried deleting the preferences and starting from scratch. If I do that, and choose the easy setup with HDV- 1080i60, it gives me this error "Unable to locate the following external devices- HDV (1440 X 1080) 30fps.
I upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 this morning and upgraded the OS to 10.4.7 and QT to 7.1.3 and still no change.
Im at my wits end, Ive been working on this for a whole week now.
    Thank you,
    Bugs

It has been reported to take more than one attempt to correct the installation but, if properly executed on a machine without other system problems, the QT reinstall process does work. The key element here is you must reinstall QT after you trash the receipts. The process is listed below.
    x
To do a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
If this doesn't work, then the problem lies elsewhere:
    1. your system - user preferences, firewire ports or other system elements.
    2. your equipment - camera/deck/firewire cables.
    3. your process - not setting up the software properly or using the software erroneously.
Listed below is a troubleshooting process. Not all steps are appropriate but the general process of isolating the problem is useful.

  • Problem with image capture via firewire from sony camcorder TRV20E

I'm new to premiere pro. Have checked compat. of camcorder with PProCS3 and am told by Adobe technical team it is ok. So what am I not doing? I've followed the on-line help but still no video. It must be in the settings PLEASE can someone offer me some pointers. I've gone back to the Preferences - Device Control - options and having not found the model of the camcorder I've put the settings back to the default - but that made no difference.
I'm working on a Mac and have even tried opening the camcorder in i-movie but it doesn't pick up the connection from the camcorder. Is this an oh so simple thing I'm missing? I'm really stuck and would really appreciate some feedback. Thank you

    Susan,
Several folk have had issues with Capture from a myriad number of cameras. As Matthew noted, his Capture worked with a certain sequence. Others have noted different sequences, that worked for them.
    Sequences to try:
1.) Plug in camera (iLink) and turn it on. Start PP and then Capture
2.) Plug in camera, but do NOT turn it on. Start PP, then Capture, then turn camera on
3.) Start PP, plug in camera, turn it on, then start Capture
4.) Start PP, plug in camera, but do NOT turn it on. Start Capture, then turn on camera
It would be great if all cameras worked exactly the same way, but it seems that they do not.
One note: if your iLink cable is a powered cable make sure that the camera is turned off, BEFORE you plug in the cable. With a powered cable, I make sure that the device is both off and its power cord is not attached. Too many fried IEEE-1394 sockets can result from having the computer on and the device on. Do not make this mistake. This is for the powered IEEE-1394 cables - the ones with the "U" shaped, large plugs. Please read this paragraph again, if you have a powered cable, or read the specs to see if you do. Most camera IEEE-1394 connections are not powered, but make sure first!
I'd even suggest that you do a search of the Premiere forums, not just CS3, and plug in "Firewire," "iLink," "cable" and read.
As for sequences that worked with certain camera models, Jim Simon posted several articles on his findings. I think that Steven Gotz did, as well.

  • No communication with device control through AJA Io?

So this is weird (to me). I'm trying to capture a few Beta tapes and can't seem to get the device control going. For whatever reason I'm getting the "No Communication" message in my Log and Capture window. Of course, I'm getting the image in the window, but I can't control the deck through Log and Capture.
    My settings seem right:
    -Deck in remote mode
-FCP set to AJA Io device control
-Capture settings at AJA Io Betacam to DV (I know this isn't a problem because I can see the image)
-I have unplugged and reset each cable in each port on the deck, Io, and computer
The only thing I can think about is that the last footage I captured was from my MiniDV camera, so I must have tweaked some kind of a setting that I don't know about. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stef

Device control: AJA Io RS-422 NTSC
The RS-422 cable is connected to both the deck and the AJA. The Firewire cable is connected to my 400 port and the AJA.
There has to be some kind of a problem with my 400 port, because I just daisy chained the AJA (which only uses a 400 cable) through my Lacie drive, which is connected to the laptop through the 800 port.
Is there an explanation for this? Hopefully besides, "Sounds like your 400 port chucks it, Stef. Time to go get a new one."

  • Device online, but cannot control camera from Capture screen

I have a the camcorder listed below connected to my computer through a firewire card (also listed below), and I'm trying to capture video from tape with Premiere Pro CS4.  The camera is online, and if I use the controls on the camera player to play the tape, the video shows in the capture preview, but I cannot control the camera from the capture screen.
Device Control is set to DV/HDV, and set device to Samsung.
Any idea what's going on here?
    Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Sound card / driver version: SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio driver:5.12.1.5246
Video capture card / driver: Texas instruments OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 firewire card, driver:5.1.2535.0
    Camcorder: Samsung SC-D363 miniDV, driver:5.1.2600.0
    - Amanda, Carolina Tiger Rescue

Yes, the record button is live, just the controls to control the tape deck in the camera are greyed out.
I have since borrowed a Sony DCR-HC42 to capture from, and the controls are working for it.  However, it will not capture by setting In Points and Out Points,  I just have to position the tape as best as possible, record and select when to stop the recording stop from the Preview.  It's not ideal, but it's getting the job done.
This sort of problem seems to be par for the course when using Premiere on a pc. Users just have to plan on a few days to resolve compatability issues that should not have existed.
so for the moment, no critical issues, but once this project is done I will need to revisit the problem.
    thanks for the help!  Amanda

  • Device Control for HV-20 capturing DV?

In FCE, I'm using the "DV-NTSC Firewire Basic" Easy Setup to capture DV (not HDV) from a Canon HV-20. It works great using "Capture Now," but "Capture Clip" apparently is not available.
Can anyone confirm that full-fledged device control is not available in this configuration? (That is, I can't preview the tape and set In and Out points before capturing.)

My mistake, duh! The Capture window works just fine in this configuration. One must, however, click the "Play" button!

  • FCP Firewire Issues / Device control exporting footage

I previously used DV for all importing and exporting through firewire. Recently I've updated to HDV. For some reason I'm unable to print to tape or even tape through the timeline via firewire. at first I thought it was the HDV camera, till I tried to export via firewire to DV again. Nothing happened. FCP wasn't even recognizing the DV Deck or DV camera. It said the device was missing. I went into the audio/video settings and easy set up to no success. What's going with FCP, that I can't output through firewire anymore. Please help, if you have any suggestions.

First of all. Have you tried checking the system profiler to see if you system is recognising the DV deck?
Click Apple symbol/ About this Mac / More Info... / Hardware / Firewire.
If your system is seeing the deck, then the Deck's name / model number should appear on the firewire bus.
If it does, then the problem lies with FCP. Try changing the device control settings to Firewire Basic. Try trashing your preferences.
If the deck does not apear on the firewire bus (press apple R, to refresh) then the problem lies with your system / firewire port / deck.
Try resarting the Mac with the deck already switched on and connected. Try another Firewire cable (Yes they do fail with regular monotony).

  • Device Control/Capture Problem

My computer set up is an HP xw9300 workstation running Windows XP. I shoot 720/60p HDV, sometimes with tape and sometimes with tape and hard drive. The cameras are JVC and the deck is the JVC BR-HD50. Although I had some difficulty getting Premiere from CS2 to recognize the deck for recording, it eventually did. No problems at all with Premiere in CS3. I recently upgraded to CS4...and haven't been able to capture anything since. In the dviice control, both under preferences and in the capture program, the settings that worked in CS2 and CS3 are JVC/Standard. Using the same settings with Premiere in CS4, device control will control the deck functions (forward/play/back), but it will not record and it will not stop the deck. I've tried all the JVC settings...none work. I've also tried to capture without device control...no soap. Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on here? Your help and suggestions are appreciated.

This warning message is just to tell user that volume slider will remain disabled for the selecetd device. This is new addition in FMLE 3.0 and was not there in FMLE 2.5
Also for first message, please make sure that no other instance of FMLE is already running using this device. You can verify this from task manager. If any other instance of FMLE is running then please close that instance so that device gets free for new instance.

  • Trying to use FireWire devices with a W540 through a Thunderbolt adapter

We have a camera that we need to use that has FireWire 800 as its sole interface, and because it needs to be mobile we had to use it with a laptop.  After some research we decided that the best course of action was to purchase a ThinkPad W540 and connect the camera to the Thunderbolt port with a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, as this should give us plenty of bandwidth for the camera.
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to connect any FireWire devices to the laptop in this way.  We have tried connecting both the camera and a FireWire hard drive through the adapter, and while the power lights will come on for both devices the computer resolutely refuses to even acknowledge their existance.
I have tried everything that I can think of to get this to work, updating all of the dirvers on the laptop, checking all of the settings in the BIOS, and searching the forums for similar issues, but now I have run out of ideas.  What can I do to get this laptop to play nice with my FireWire devices?

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.
Sorry you're having issues using a Thunderbolt-2-Firewire adapter.
Not much I can offer on that as I've never used one, but an alternative might be to try an Expresscard Firewire adapter. A number of them I've seen offer 2 ports, so that might be useful also.

  • Using Firewire devices with your MacBook

My wife recently purchased a new MacBook and decided that she wanted to try editing video from our camcorder. We have a Sony DCR-HC26 with firewire and USB 2.0 ports. If necessary, we can use the software provided by Sony and the USB port to import the video but Sony says that the video quality is much better using the firewire port. Unfortunately, Apple chose not to provide a firewire port on the new MacBook and there are no ports for installing a card. Is anyone aware of options available to use firewire devices with your MacBook? It seems as though this would be a common problem given the number of legacy firewire devices out there. I researched adapters but the only one I found is currently only supported by Windows XP and that doesn't do us any good. Thanks for the help.

The current white Macbook and the Macbook Pro has Firewire.

There are no USB to Firewire adapters. (Desperate aluminum Macbook owners are looking, but it can't be done.) Firewire MUST be in the computer.

  • LabView / DSC / FieldPoint with Symantec Endpoint Encryption Device Control

I am developing a LabView DSC based control program to communicate with multiple FieldPoint modules (cFP2200/cFP1808) for a client. Their IT department has implemented Symantec Endpoint Encryption Device Control ( http://www.symantec.com/endpoint-encryption-device-control ) and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this software?
From what I have read and had explained to me, it is much more than an antivirus program. It operates at a very low level within Windows and restricts reading/writing to external devices, USB sticks, network shares, etc. It can also monitor / restrict network traffic and WiFi access.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi MillerMech,
I believe it will cause some errors to be thrown due to its restrictive nature. Symantec has a discussion forum which will most likely be more helpful:
