Firewire Device is only recognized after reeboot

I used to have all my firewire devices hot pluggable with my Macs in the past. But my new MacBook Pro (SL 10.6.3) doesn't do that. What i have is a Terratec Phase X24 Audio device that can only be used after a reeboot of the machine. Also when plugged in while the MBP sleeps, it is not found. This is quite annoying and not mac-like! Please help!!

thanks, but i was trying to steer away from a restore, i have over 11,000 songs along with over a hundred videos and 600 pictures, it takes hours to load it back on..
do you think the amount of songs i have on it may be affecting it, in making it slower and non-responsive?
because not only does my computer not recognize it when i first plug it in, but once i "detatch from the computer" it takes about a minute for the "do not disconnect" screen to turn off. Also, it takes about a minute in restarting the iPod.

  • USB devices only recognized after running 'lsusb -v'

This is quite an annoying problem. My USB devices are only recognized (and auto-mounted) after I run lsusb -v. Nothing shows up in dmesg before this. After running it, all is well. I have to repeat this every time I plug in a device.
    Any suggestions?

The problem is not with just USB storage devices, but with other devices too (printers, DVB sticks, mice).

  • Firewire drive no longer recognized after upgrade?

having an onset of problems the last 2 weeks.
first upgraded to 10.4.6 on mac mini 1.42 non-duo, worked a few days than acted weird with apps crashing. had to reinstall from 10.4 disk. seemed ok. repaired permissions, ect. after reinstall (and a subsequent power outage) a firewire drive attached at time was no longer recognized by mac mini or connected imacG3. reinstalled 10.4.2 on mac mini. installer unable to reinstall 10.4.6., I would like to have firewire drive recognized again. when attached to other firewire drive in daisy chain, says device unrecognized, other wise unable to get any info on drive. what to do?

I am having nearly the exact same issue as you are experiencing. My Western Digital Dual-Option Media Center 160 GB FW HD is going in and out big time. It seems to be there for a time but then conks out. I have to disconnect the power and now the drive seems to be malfunctioning.
Same story with my LaCie 52x CD Burner. I placed the Disk Warrior CD in there and the computer recognized the disc at first but then spinning beach balls galore!
This has to be one of the worst updates to an OS X system I can remember. I can only think PowerPC QA testing has gone through the toilet since the Intel move was completed.

  • USB 3.0 device no longer recognized after USB driver update

    Hello,
I was setting up a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine. This PC had 2 USB external hard drives plugged into the USB 3.0 ports in the back. These drives were working fine after Windows installation using (I guess) the Windows default driver.
However, after I installed the USB 3.0 driver downloaded from the motherboard vendor, one of the drives wasn't recognized anymore. In fact, Windows told me the device had malfunctioned. I tried reinstalling the USB 3.0 driver and plugging the troubled device
into different ports but these measures didn't help.
That hard drive still works when I plug it in a different machine and this allows me to get the data off it. However, I would like to fix the problem described above and to resume using this hard drive with its original machine.
    Any help please? Thanks!
OS: Windows 8 x64 Pro with Media Center. All drivers up-to-date.

Make sure it's the right series usb 3 driver, series 7 or series 8.  Series 7 drivers are version 1.x and series 8 are version 2.x.  They use the same device id's.

  • Firewire devices not being recognized by MBP

    Hello
I just purchased a MacBook Pro which I have a 20" cinema display connected to. I have an external Firewire drive and an iFire plugged into the Firewire ports on the back of Cinema Display but they are not being recognized by my MBP. If I plug the external drive directly into the Firewire port on the MBP it is recognized but is not when connected to the Cinema Display. Anyone have any ideas? I just migrated from a G5 and these same devices were connected to the Cinema Display then.
    Thanks

    Hey dmar713,
The iPod touch requires USB 2.0, check the speed of the USB port.

If the USB port is not causing the issue, it may be an application conflict.

  • Certain USB and firewire devices no longer recognized

I am going to make a solid attempt to communicate the problem, I'm led to believe that there are some configuration settings that need to be corrected to solve this, though I am not able to find it.
    The problem:
(what led up to it) My SSD was knocked out of commission do to plugging in a 'newer technology' 7-port USB hub that had its power supply disconnected. The computer froze, then would not boot. Applecare originally suspected the logic board but found the ssd was knocked out. They reported everything else was fine and the laptop was back in my possesion. I sent in the SSD for warranty replacement and put the original hard drive in. This is when the problem I am having now started.
For some some, a Lacie Rugged FW/USB drive shows up as an unknown device. The USB logitect c910 webcam will not register at all, and the Saffire 6 USB sound card is receiving power with the amp inputs/outputs working...but does not show up in the system preferences for sound. -- There is a second 2TB USB drive (also a rugged lacie) that mounts to the desktop occasionally, but on most reboots it doesn't show up, even in disk utility. When it does show up it appears to be working fine.
    As a note:
    - ALL of the above mentioned devices work properly on my father's PC.
    - USB devices like my iPod, 8gb flash drives, new Belkin slim 7-port hub, all usb midi controllers, and an external CD burner work without issue
What I have already tried (several times):
-- repairing disk permissions and repair disk in disk utility
-- updating to the latest software, and installing the correct drivers for the sound card and webcam. The lacie external hard disks have no drivers for Mac
    -- reseting the PRAM
    -- reseting the SMC
-- plugging them in one at a time, in all ports, and ensuring they all have the correct power supply and working USB cable
-- upgrading from snow leapord to lion to mountain lion on the disk had no effect
-- by luck, I managed to boot up from the 2TB drive which contains a recent clone backup of the SSD. The same problem exists.
Before I ever submit a question, I make a solid effort to research past threads. So far, I have found no additional troubleshooting advice beyond the 7 steps I have tried as covered above. I am still awaiting the replacement SSD drive from owc. Again, the problem devices are:
    - Lacie Rugged FW/USB 500gb external drive
    - Logitech C910 webcam
    - Saffire 6 USB sound card
    - Lacie Rugged 2TB USB external drive (sometimes it shows up)
All have the correct supporting drivers, all 4 are recognized in my father's PC. None of my closest friends own a Mac to test them on theirs. I'm led to believe the problem may be configuration settings-related..though I currently cannot locate where such settings might be. Otherwise I have no clue what the problem is.
I apologize for the length of this post, but my intention is to minimize misunderstanding and rule out the options I've already tried. Any insight on this is appreciated as my music productions depend on both hard drives and the soundcard. Thanks for your time and attention. If any more info is needed I will be more than happy to try to provide it.

    Hi,
Thanks for your post! I took my ibook to an apple shop on monday to which I was told that the panic kernal that occured interrupted my software update and that the best thing to do would be to reinstall tiger. I did that, erasing and installing, and the problem seems to have dissapeared. I just wish I had read your post first! What was interesting was my mouse worked in the USB port but stuff like my memory stick didn't appear in disk utility. I also tried to replace the interrupted software updates with the Power PC combo one but that would not mount. I am not sure what all these means but if anyone has a similar problem to what I had, I suggest reinstalling the OS. Seems like a pretty weird and rare problem to have tho!

  • IPod is only recognized after restarting

  • Problem connecting Firewire device and external HD at the same time

Hi. I'm attempting to record digital audio through a Presonus Firepod A/D interface via a Firewire 400 to 800 cable connected to one of the Firewire 800 ports on a mid-2010 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard.
The problem is that if I have an external HD connected to one of the other Firewire 800 ports on the computer and powered on at the same time, the connection to the Presonus Firewire device is not recognized by the Mac Pro. Not only that, performance of the Mac Pro is affected adversely and System Profiler is unable to list any Firewire devices. If I turn the external HD off, the Presonus device is recognized and listed in System Profiler and the machine runs fine. I'm able to connect two external hard drives via separate Firewire 800 ports on the Mac Pro and both drives mount w/ no problem. It's only when I try to connect one of the external HDs and the Presonus audio device at the same time that the problem occurs.
I used this same arrangement on a PowerMac G5 running Tiger w/ no problems whatsoever. If the 400 to 800 cable is bad, I would think it wouldn't work at all, but it does when only the Presonus Firepod is connected and powered on. Any ideas?

Have done more research and apparently this is not an uncommon problem: overloading the Firewire bus when connecting an audio device along with an additional device like an external hard drive. As I understand it now, audio signal is a bandwidth hog and the solution is to get a Firewire PCIe card which will have its own independent Firewire bus and which I'll use exclusively for my audio device.

  • SatProA60 XP SP2 drops 1394 iEEE firewire device after standby

I have an external dvd writer 1394 IEEE /USB2.0 (LG GSA 5163D) with my Satelite Pro A60 and have discovered a very annoying problem when the laptop comes out of standby The dvd writer is dropped by the system. IF I have it plugged to the USB everything OK.
I have the latest BIOS installed 1.9B
Does anyone know of a fix for this problem?
    Is it a Microsoft problem?
    Thanks

    Hi
Like Ivan said firewire port is usually recognized by operating system and I can really dont understood why this happen after using standby mode. The only thing that I know is that some external devices dont support standby mode (friend of mine has the same problem with his Freecom burner). After restart the drive can be used again.

The info that was on the old iPhone can only be retreived either by restoring from iCloud/iTunes back up or syncing from iCloud. You need to chek these places and if nothing is there then I'm sorry that data is gone and you will only have the back ups you see.
    But check iTunes back ups:

    Edit>Preferences>devices
    Mac

The 1.5TB is Unformatted, so one would assume that it is already damaged, empty, erased or unusable because of the windows Format.
If it was formatted by a windows computer, then your you will need to check it on that windows computer to see if the data is still there? If so then you will need to move the data to another drive, format the drive for cross platform use and copy the data back to it.

Select the Partition tab > select 1 or more Partitions > select Options > set the Partition Map Scheme to GUID Partition Table (if your going to use it exclusive for backing up your Mac) or Master Boot Record (if your going to use it cross platform) > click OK > then Format it Mac OS Extended (for Mac) or FAT-32 (for cross platform) > hit the Apply button.

  • FireWire devices doesn't mount nor are recognized by OSX

A known issue but with several solucions posted but nothing seems to help me out...
Something is wrong with the FireWire of my Powerbook G4 667 MHz. External harddrives as soundcards as iPods as anything with a FireWire interface won't mount. However, it seems that the devices are getting electricity, Ipods charge for example. But doesn't appear on the desktop. Nor in the System Profiler. Disk Utility doesn't "see" the drives either. I have been trying with reseting the computer, the VRAM and the VPRAM. Also taken out the battery and left the computer alone for a while. No results. And of course, I have been searching the forums and diskussions like crazy but haven't found a solution.
Anyone who can give me some leads about what I can do next? A clue in this mystery is that I used a Pocketdrive to move files in between the Mac and a PC. I worked fine for 10 times or so, but then suddenly the Mac didn't mount it. First I thought that it was just that harddrive that had some problems (from the PC, I might haven't emptied the trashbin the last time I disconnected it from the PC) but then I realized that no FireWire deviced worked any longer.
    Thanks in advance

Hi, jorgengun. Try running the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with your Powerbook, and see whether it reports any problem with your FireWire controller or port. It's possible that your port has gone bad, in which case the timing was probably just coincidental — it's unlikely that anything that happened on the PC could have caused your Powerbook's port to be damaged.
If you don't have Apple Hardware Test, a TechTool Pro or TechTool Deluxe CD has similar hardware testing abilities. (TTD was supplied by Apple to the purchasers of AppleCare Extended Protection plans, and is not available otherwise as far as I know. TTP is a commercial product.)
If you don't have any of the above, and all of the devices that no longer work when connected to the port did indeed work in the past, take the Powerbook to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store, or to a local Apple dealership, and have the port tested.
A bad port would necessitate one of two things: a logic board replacement, or the purchase of a CardBus-slot Firewire card.
