Firewire devices not seen.

Hi,
I have a 2009 Intel MacBook 2GHz with the 400 FW. I attached variously a Canopus video converter and a LaCie FW drive. The laptop saw neither. When I opened System Profiler, they weren't there either, just the Firewire 400 port. I popped both items into my old laptop (a late 2007 Intel MacBook 2GHz) and they both showed up.
Went to Genius bad, and the problem repeated. However when the lad restarted and selected a boot disk, his disk showed up in the options. He has suggested it's a Digidesign fault (I have ProTools 8 LE on the machine). He removed the Digi Firewire driver - no difference. He suggested I remove Digi's gear bit by bit. I pointed out that this machine and all on it was copied via Time Machine from my old MacBook (the one mentioned above), which worked fine. He's sticking ith the "it's Digi" scenario.
Anyone have a similar problem? Anyone know what to do?
The MacBook is on 10.5.6 - but BOTH laptops are. One works, one doesn't.

Does OS X not see the drive? And were these daisy-chained? Sometimes, Firewire drives can be REALLY pesky when not ejected properly. Here's how I solve the problem:
1. Disconnect the cable from the drive and the computer.
2. Remove the Power cable from the drive and turn it on (No, the drive won't turn on)
3. Reconnect the power cable and actually turn on the drive.
4. reconnect the cable to the drive then the computer. You should see the drive. If not, you can check System Profiler (Applications/Utilities folder) and see what it says under the firewire tab.

    Greetings
    using a G5, tiger 10.4.9
I have been using this computer for many months with no problem using firewire devices. I recently set up a seperate user account on the computer for my daughter. Prior to this ( for many months)I had a fireiwre device - LACIE external HD -connected that would mount each time at startup and show up on the desktop. Now, I can't get the icon on the desktop of the LACIE to show when I startup. I connected a camera to the computer using firewire, but it too would not show ( before it would). When I connected the camera using USB, it showed up on the desktop. Looks like firewire devices not showing. I checkd System Profile and it shows the LACIE device as connected and functioning. But it won't show up on the desktop. Any ideas on why I can't ge the Firewire devices to show on the desktop?
Thank you in advance for you help. . . .

Sounds like you have the name wrong. Open Disk Utility and take a look to verify the volume name. Disk Utility will list the drive itself, then indented below that is the volume name. To verify that you are using the correct name, try launching Terminal and do a list command:
    ls -a /Volumes/"Name of Volume"
Hit the return key and see if the contents of the volume are listed. There is a space after "ls" and another after "-a"--if you don't get anything or get an error then you might want to try
    ls -a /Volumes
and try copying the name from the list and pasting into the AppleScript.

  • Device not seen in itunes after data transfer

I bought an original MacBookPro from my daughter & transferred all my data from PB G4 to MBP.
Everything works just fine, except itunes does not see my ipod touch. I cannot figure out how to get it "recognized" as a device?
    Any suggestions?

    Hello.
    Try the following suggestions below
    1. Perform all Software Updates - Click on Apple logo in top left corner of the OS and choose Software Updates. It will scan the mac and then populate a list of software that needs updating including iTunes if there is any at all.
    2. Connect iPod Touch to another USB Port in the Macbook Pro, If it still does not show up, Disconnect the touch. Reboot the Mac, then reconnect the touch.

  • Firewire devices not showing up - No firewire information in System Profile

    I have 3 external HD's, and an M-Audio Firewire interface connected to my dual 2.5 G5 - 10.4.6.
None of my drives are showing up on my desktop, and my interface is not showing up in my audio settings. In addition, the FIREWIRE secion of the system profiler has no information in it at all... it simply says "FireWire Bus:"
I ran a hardware diagnostic, and everything passed both the quick test and the full test.
I have tried numerous firewire cables, and all of my ports (FW 400 and 800)
I am very alarmed by this, I have zapped PRAM and repaired all permissions in Disk Utility.
please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance,
    john

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! (some you have tried!)
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.6 Combo update ( PPC, not for Intel systems). Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work
    Cheers!

  • The FIX for FireWire Devices not being found.

If you have FireWire devices connected to your iMac that are no longer being recognized, this post is for you.
    1. Power off your iMac
    2. Unplug all USB and Firewire cables from the iMac.
    3. Unplug the iMac from the main power.
    4. Wait 4 minutes
    5. Reconnect and power on.
    6. Devices will be found as you'd normally expect.
Somehow, four minutes without any kind of power resets the Firewire interface so that it will work again.

    1. Power off your iMac
    2. Unplug all USB and Firewire cables from the iMac.
    3. Unplug the iMac from the main power.
    4. Wait 4 minutes
    5. Reconnect and power on.
    6. Devices will be found as you'd normally expect.
On step five, you say 'reconnect and power on'. Does this mean I should turn on my external device and connect before I turn the iMac on?
As for my ports being blown, I don't think that's the problem for me. My iPod easily mounts on firewire. And this device mounts on my other machines that use 10.3 panther.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to hyjack this topic, it sounds like you've got a good method and I want to utilize it properly!
    Thanks,

  • Firewire device not being detected

Hi! First time here, and hoping for some wise counsel! I have an audio control interface (M-Audio Project Mix I/O)running from my G5 via Firewire connection.
Following a brief power interuption, during which both device and Mac were 'on', the power was immediately restored, and I had to restart the Mac, but the Project Mix came back on with the power. Since this my Mac won't detect the control interface (I've reloaded the software and tried to re-establish the link through the software but no joy).
The M-Audio support site has a warning about permanent damage being caused to Firewire ports through 'hot-plugging' and I'm beginning to wonder if this may be the case here when the power was disrupted and then immediately restored.
How can I tell if this has happened? And if it has, can I do anything about it?
    HELP!!!!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise! Bill

  • All firewire devices not recognised after upgrading to Leopard 10.5.4

Hello, yesterday I finally got around to upgrading one of my home computers (old Emac G4 powerpc from 2005) to Leopard. I have been using Leopard on my work computer (G5 also from 2005) with no problems for a year now (this Leopard update was installed professionally when. I work with a lot of files on external hd's, mostly Lacies, one Maxtor and yesterday got new G-Drive 1TB. Since the upgrade the Emac will not recognise any of the external hds when connected by Firewire. It will recognise them if I use the USB. However I'm sending too much media traffic (film editing) to just use usb all the time. I need my firewire connections!
This is clearly a Leopard issue, there are no problems with the drives or the firewire connections or the cables, they all work fine on the work computer and my other home computer (powerbook laptop G4) and as I said the upgraded emac will recognise them from usb. And since it's three different kinds of drives that all work on other computers but all stopped working on the single Leopard upgrade it's not a Lacie, Maxtor or G-drive problem.
I've seen a lot of threads on this and other support forums about firewire problems but some are a slightly different problem and many are quite old so I wonder if anyone has any recent experience/advice for me?
Many threads complain that Apple was not recognising the problem, maybe there is also some progress there?
thanks in advance for any help!

It's still possible that there is now a hardware issue, and if so it might respond to resetting the FireWire bus. This can often be done by just unplugging the power cord for a few minutes.

  • Firewire device not showing up in finder, even though connected

I have a device (Tascam hd-p2) connected to my firewire 800 port on my macbook pro.  It has information on a cf card that I would like to access.   The device shows up in the bus on system profiler, but it doesn't show up in my sidebar in finder, on my desktop, or anywhere that I can find it.  How can I get to my information? Thanks

  • Device not seen by MediaSource n

Yesterday I had been loading my CD's to the Zen Xtra 40GB, I had done about 5500 songs and then got RunTime error in CTCMS.exe. I got the error when trying the GET INFO button.
I downloaded the lastest version and uninstalled the old one and installed the new one. The player will play music, but it is no longer seen by Media Organizer?
It was for a time still seen, but got the error each time I tried to use the GET INFO function. Today I cannot even see the device?
I am running XP PRO SP2. Do I need to have updates for firmware or other apps? I would think not. I really like this tool, but it and the player are worthless, if I cannot use the web to get data for the CD's.

Let me get a sanity check. Zenpmc_pcfn_4-_-3_nst is for Zen media players. I have a Zen Xtra, so that is not for me? This is the link I followed in your post.
    I DL
    3.0.0 Nomad
    .20.08 Firmware for Xtra
    .26.02 driver
    2.03.29 MediaSource
So I tried the MediaSource and got worse, no longer even detects device. Do I want to remove all and install the four items listed? Ignore Zenpmc?
I know I need to back up all the stuff on the player first and I am hoping to drop it on my other PC before I do anything. I do not want to lose the 5500+ songs I have so far. That is a lot of Cd's to mount.
    Thanks

  • Firewire devices not being recognized by MBP

    Hello
I just purchased a MacBook Pro which I have a 20" cinema display connected to. I have an external Firewire drive and an iFire plugged into the Firewire ports on the back of Cinema Display but they are not being recognized by my MBP. If I plug the external drive directly into the Firewire port on the MBP it is recognized but is not when connected to the Cinema Display. Anyone have any ideas? I just migrated from a G5 and these same devices were connected to the Cinema Display then.
    Thanks

The iPod touch requires USB 2.0, check the speed of the USB port.

If the USB port is not causing the issue, it may be an application conflict.

  • Connection Issue - Device Not Seen

    Hi
I've just bought a Nano Special Edition Red and am having connection problems.
I already have a 60Gb Photo on the system which connects & updates without issue.
When I connect the Nano SE it is initially seen in the Device List and it displays the normal updating info. The system says Updating Do Not Disconnect in the top window (as you would expect) yet within 6-8 tracks the update stops & the message 'The iPod Wolfhound's iPod cannot be updated. The required folder cannot be found' is diplayed.
I have only one option which is to click Ok. This stops all activity & removes the Nano SE from the Device List. The iPod screen then displays the normal menu options.
    Software version is 1.1.1.
Does anyone have any ideas as to the problem here please?
    Thank you.

  • Raw device not seen  after reboot the server

    hi,
I hv upgrade kernal in linux 7.2 but when reboot system no raw device found
how can find out raw device

    From http://www.fors.com/orasupp/unix/37914_1.HTM
Raw Devices and Oracle - 20 Common Questions and Answers
    2. How can a raw device be recognised?
In the /dev directory, there are essentially two type of files: block
special and character special. Block special files are used when data is
transferred to or from a device in fixed size amounts (blocks), whereas
character special files are used when data is transferred in varying
size amounts. Raw devices use character special files; a long listing
of the /dev directory shows them with a 'c' at the leftmost position of
    the permissions field, e.g.
    crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 15, 0 Mar 12 09:45 rfd0
In addition, character special files usually have names beginning with
an 'r', as shown in the above example. Some devices, principally disks,
have both a block special device and a character special device
associated with them; for the floppy diskette shown above, there is also
    a device
    brw-rw-rw- 1 root system 15, 0 Apr 16 15:42 /dev/fd0
So the presence of a 'c' in a device does NOT necessarily mean this is a
raw device suitable for use by Oracle (or another application).
Generally, a raw device needs to be created and set aside for Oracle (or
whatever application is going to use it) when the UNIX system is set
up - therefore, this needs to be done with close co-operation between
the DBA and UNIX system administrator.
Once a raw device is in use by Oracle, it must be owned by the oracle
account, and may be identified in this way.
