Firewire disconnects using motu 828 mkii and Mackie ONYX 1620i. Why?

Having replaced my trusted MOTU 828 mkii as it kept disconnecting itself and needed rebooting including removal and replacement of the firewire lead, I have encounted the very same problem with the Mackie ONYX 1620i.
Interestingly it happened recently when I powered up a guitar amp in the same room the other day so I called my electrician friend to check out all the power outlets/sockets on the studio main. His comments were "no issues".
- As there are no other gemlins associated to the power I put it down as coincidence but had to rule it out.
I have tried a multiple of firewire leads and had the same results.
The only firewire device that seems ok is a Behringer FCA 202!!!! (Embarrasing!) - I use this for stereo output only (to the same active monitors) and swap FW lead and Output Jacks when using each device.
This is with Macbook Pro (2010), Logic Studio 9, iTunes, etc. (all purchased products and same problem with ALL audio software).
Using Lion but was an issue with previous OSX.
Certainly a head scratcher.
Anyone had any similar issues?

That's interesting. Thanks Benjy.
Please be sure to update here if you do encounter anything similar.
I cannot afford to replace my 'live' desk as well as another soundcard.
Plus, I really don't think I should have to - Mackie and MOTU are established and reputable device manufacturers and this seems to be an Apple issue.
Apple?
Anyone else sncountered similar and found a resolution after advice from apple?

Dave, your MOTU sound interface should have its own control application, where you can configure what inputs/outputs to use and how. Usually it is installed together with the driver for the device (have you installed it, by the way?). You may also try configuring it using Audio/MIDI utility.
Try looking for info at motu's web-site and/or user forums there, if my advice above doesn't work. Surely, more experienced motu users know better
By the way, also try the following: after booting your Mac first switch on MOTU, then launch GarageBand. Typically, if drivers are installed correctly and everything else is fine, your sound interface should start working by default.

  • Motu 828 MKIII firewire connection problem

    Hello !
I am a Belgian user (sorry for my english) of the Motu 828 MKIII Firewire, when I was on Windows evreythings gone ok, but  I have a big problem since I switched to Mac !
When I plug my motu with a 6pin-9pin firewire cable to my macBook pro « mid 2012 » it is not always recognized by the drivers.
Sometimes it is recognized, but if I disconnect and then reconnect it no longer works.
It does not appear in the "Motu audio setup". In the "Report System » of mac, it detects an "unknown device".
I tried another cable but it does not change, yet my firewire port works well (I tried with an extern HardDrive) !!
I also tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers, it does not change!
The firmware is 1.06, the drivers is 1.6 58373 and I’m running OSX 10.9 (mavericks).
There’s no new drivers on website...
    Please help me !

You can select which physical outputs Logic designates as your "Stereo Output" in Audio Preferences->IO Assignments. Unfortunately you cannot rename the IO label for Output 1-2 - this is permanently greyed out.
Note also that Logic that Logic has some buggy routing behavior around Output 1-2 as it assumes this is your main stereo output pair. If you want to use outputs 1 and 2 as mono outputs you will run into all sorts of trouble.
@the blind eye - you have a secondary issue in that the "Main" outputs of your MOTU are actually the mix bus of the interface itself, these are not outputs that are directly accessible by Logic.

  • MOTU 828 MKII input into Logic Pro

I posted about this earlier, but I think I can simplify/clarify:
I'm using 8 channels of ADAT pre-amp input connected to my MOTU 828 MKII.
Cuemix (MOTU's monitoring software) shows that all inputs are functioning properly.
But when I try to choose an input channel in Logic, I have a problem:
All 8 channels come through inputs 13 & 14 in Logic. Logic will allow me to select inputs 13 through 20 (they're not grayed out), but there's no audio coming to inputs 15 through 20. And, yes, I'm pressing "record" to enable the track.
I should be able to assign inputs as follows:
    ADAT 1 = Input 13
    ADAT 2 = Input 14
    ADAT 3 = Input 15
    ADAT 4 = Input 16
    ADAT 5 = Input 17
    ADAT 6 = Input 18
    ADAT 7 = Input 19
    ADAT 8 = Input 20
Any ideas on what's happening here?

The reason it is 2 out is because Logic doesn't recognise the names of the inputs. They are simply numbered. So, the front 2 inputs on the MOTU are inputs 1 and 2 in Logic. So the next input in Logic is 3, but the next input on the MOTU is on the back..... which (rear of MOTU) is input 1..... and on it goes.
    Logic 4, Motu (rear)2.
This got me at first until I realised that Logics input chanels were just numbered straight through, not differentiating between front, rear, analog, ADAT etc.... I think inputs 11 to 18 in Logic correspond to ADAT 1-8 on MOTU.

  • Compatibility Advice please: Mackie Onyx 1620i connect to Late 2012 iMac 10.8.5 Firewire to Thunderbolt

I'd like to buy a Mackie Onyx 1620i Firewire mixer/control surface for my home studio set up. I have a late 2012 iMac 10.8.5 with Thunderbolt connectors but no Firewire. I know that Apple provide a Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor but looking around online it seems people have had trouble getting these two pieces of kit to work together. I've read all the available info I can find online about running them.. re:correct serial number of the Mackie, the need for any drivers etc.. but doubt still hangs over the issue. Obviously I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on the wrong piece of equipment. Has anyone successfully run the Mackie Onyx and iMac described?.. or does anyone have sufficient expertise to deliver a definitive answer one way or the other? I'd be most grateful for any help.
    Thanks
    acolyte3

Based on my experience with the Onyx and two clients of mine who have had nothing but issues with it since day one... ... I cannot recommend it for use with a Mac....
As an example of the type of issue I am referring to.... Mackie released two hardware versions of the Onyx... The first version no longer works with modern versions of OS X.... and modern Macs.. and this can be identified by the serial number of the unit as shown on their Driver information page....
    http://www.mackie.com/products/onyxiseries/drivers/
For those with the first version.... Mackie left them 'high and dry' with no solution to their issues other than to buy the newer, second hardware version!
The second version.... again identified by the serial number.... has worked with OS X versions up to 10.8 but only for certain people.. Others have continued to report issues using the latest drivers and 10.8.5... and it does not appear to be supported for any version of OS X higher than 10.8.... which also means it doesn't work reliably with the more modern Macs which require 10.9 as a minimum OS X.
Based on these facts... again, I cannot and will not recommend this product for use with modern Macs and OS X versions.
Note: This is my personal opinion..... and others may have differing opinions depending on their own experiences with the product.

  • How do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full

how do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full.. HELP!

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.

  • Recording thousands of tapes using motu 828 and ST Pro

I have St and a Motu 828 firewire but older model to the actual. I have connected a tape deck to inputs 3 and 4 of the motu and I am trying to record tapes 24 bit and 48 Khz to further treat them but I cannot get the channels into ST audio File. Can someone help me out??

I wouldn't recommend using FCP for this type of recording. It doesn't like "on the fly" recording as much as it does batch digitizing of a source. STP would be much better for this. But, I wouldn't recommend firewire capture with STP! You have a couple of options. One, unless you get in to more serious recording, the audio input on the Mac is sufficient to use as an input. The problem is it's a mini plug and needs to be adapted. Most "pro" devoces are either 1/4", RCA, or XLR. This isn't a big deal. Adapters are found at Radio Shack and online. The other problem with this is most "pro" mics requre phantom power (+48v) to power the microphone. You can't just plug them into the computer. I use a small mixer for this. I have a 6 input Tapco mixer. Behringer, Samson, Mackie, and Tapco all make small mixers that will give you good flexibility and quality for about $100. They also have phantom power. Again, you'd just need to adapt the output to the computer's mini plug.
The other option would be to buy an audio card. M-Audio (www.midiman.com) offers several choices depending on need and budget. The 2496 card is sufficient for general purpose use. A couple of advantages to audio cards . . . they can give you better quality than the built in audio input. Not always. Depends on what you buy. They take some of the processing work from the computer. They have more flexible inputs and outputs. One disadvantage . . . they require a driver and software for routing. It can be a little confusing to use.
There are also USB options. The same website has products in this category. I have no direct experience with USB devices so I can't speak to their quality and reliability. My own preference would be the mixer or the audio card.
    Hope this helps!

  • Simultaneous multi track recording in Logic Pro7 using MOTU 828 mk2

I would like to use the eight separate audio inputs on my MOTU 828 and connect them directly in line to eight channel strips/tracks in Logic Pro 7 v 7.2.1.  (presumably through the firewire interface).  I can't find any documentation in either the Logic or MOTU manuals to tell me how to do it.  I'm sure someone out there knows - please tell me!

this happens to me from time to time. I have level and sound on the track, I hit record and nothing gets recorded. I have discovered this happen when I have another track selected other than the track I am recording on. This may be a bug in 7.1.1. Make sure you have the track you are recording to, highlighted (selected).

  • Motu 828 MK2 and GB 08

I am new to MAC have been a PC user for many years. I am converting over my home music studio to the MAC. I am running a Motu 828 Firewire. When I used the two front XLR channels it works perfectly. When I hook my Bose Tone Engine aux output channels to the Balance inputs on the back. I get the signal to the Motu and from the Motu to the Cuemix FX console on the MAC. I can even see the signal when I bring up the sound tab on the MAC but I can't for the life of me get the GB to receive the signal. I see the channels in the drop downs of GB for the tracks but I can't see it. I can get the mac to direct its signal to the motu drive and can play itunes through my studio monitors but I can't seem to get GB to see the I/O analogue balanced outputs.
Can anyone help? I been through every configuration screen I can think of but do not seem to find a way to activate these in GB
Thanks in advance for any help

incoming signals from my 896HD are fairly low as well,
try changing the input level to -10, for starters. and make sure the motu shows
a healthy signal on the input meter display.
if still too low, your turnables might be something like -30db. if this is the case, you'll need some sort of line level booster/converter(analog).
a straight ahead turntable require a specisl RTAA preamp to boost the very low signal to line level. these also have an correctional eq curve in them.
re mics: same thing; there's a good chance they a dynamics and the motu only has about 40db of clean gain so you signal could show up low.
in logic, record at 24bit. the resulting recorded waveform overview might look a little small but should still be useful, and can be boosted easily.
re motu outs: try to drive the output as high as pos. and turn down your monitors. it sounds better this way.

  • Recording with Logic and Mackie Onyx?

Has anyone an opinion about how well these
    new
Mackie Onyx mixers w/ the Firewire Card
perform working with Logic Pro 7?
    Specifically in terms of tracking
16 live channels simultaneously and getting
low latency as well as tracking out thru Logic
and the Mackie Onyx to a standalone CD-R for
    mixdown/mastering?

It was my understanding that the audio which passes through the firwire pipe (in or out) does not carry the channel strip information with it.
this means that for tracking, your EQ settings will be for reference only. and you will have to use logic to EQ your work, and be careful on the way back in for CD burning not to double EQ your work.
Seems like a great idea, but has a number of drawbacks.
why not get a presonus or similar interface with many inputs, and then distribute the control room signal with something like a big knob?
seems like a simpler, more direct and ultimately "higher fidelity" solution.
    imbmo anyhow...

  • Error while trying to synchronise audio & midi, Motu 828 mkII

Hi, I've tried lots of things before posting this but am running out of ideas - any help appreciated.
Since upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard, my MOTU 828mkII has not been working right. The problem happens in Logic 8 and all other apps I've tried which use audio and midi. (eg Garageband, Live, Reason), but I'm posting here because of the specific error message which only appears in Logic.
An inconsistent length of time after opening the app, which may be anywhere from a few seconds to over an hour, midi input is lost and the above message appears in Logic - though midi output remains working. Often there is a brief high frequency noise at the moment this happens, otherwise audio playback is unaffected even though in Logic the screen freezes until I clear the error message. If I'm recording audio, there is a brief interruption in the recording. Then the message reappears several times in quick succession. The only way to restore midi input is to quit and relaunch the app. Also Logic sometimes crashes on quitting, which of course may be an unrelated issue.
Before installing Snow Leopard I cloned my internal (Tiger) drive to an external LaCie firewire drive and if I boot from that on the same computer everything works fine. There is also no problem on my partner's Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard (installed from the same family pack).
MOTU tech support have been pretty useless, though I've tried all the tricks suggested by them like toggling optical inputs and resetting. I've tried changing FW cables, and running with nothing else plugged in at all. I've re-installed the combined OS update and I'm using the latest drivers. I've also trashed all the MOTU preference files, as well as the system audio device settings preference files. Oh and this happens even if I open a new project and have just 1 audio track and no plugins.
The only thing I can think of now is that something got corrupted when I migrated everything back from the cloned drive after installing Snow Leopard, and I need to erase and re-install everything, but if anyone can suggest anything else to try first I'm all ears!
Thanks for reading this - a bit lengthy but I've tried to give all the info I have.
    Kit

Sounds like the MOTU needs to be reset.
Did you leave the MOTU unit plugged in via Firewire when you did the OS upgrade?
Not a good idea as the upgraded system Firewire interface has to initialize and often this sends out a bit of random data.
Disconnect the firewire cable from the 828mkII
    Press the Setup knob
Turn the Setup knob all the way to the right, (to Factory Default)
    Press the Select knob
    Press the Value knob
Power off the interface and plug the firewire cable back in
    Power the interface back on

  • My iPhone cable gave me a warning this morning that it was  not certified to work with this phone, but it is the cable that came with the phone and that i have been using for a year and a half.  Why?

i plugged in my 18 month old iPhone to charge it, using the cable that came with it and that I have used regularly all along. I got a warning on my phone screen saying the cable is not certified and may not work properly with my iPhone.  Why?

If you updated iPhone to iOS7, it now checks for real Apple Lightning Cable. Your cable may not be Apple, or someone swapped another cable with yours. Make sure the cable end is clean, take a clean dry toothbrush and carefully clean charging port on the iPhone.

  • I installed dropbox in my applications and now I want to delete it.  Dragging it to the trash isn't working because I get a message that dropbox is open, but I have hardly used it at all and cannot figure out why or how it is open.

When I try to uninstall dropbox I get a message that it's open, however, I never use dropbox and cannot figure out how to close it in order to move it to the trash.

Look in the menubar for a blue icon shaped like an open box and click on it. Click on the gear icon and select quit. Now you can throw it away. DropBox is an almost faceless program - it puts an icon in the menu bar and that's all it shows.

  • When I import an old pic, I can't use the latest version and buttons in LR, Why?

I did import an old photo, still in RAW format, but i can't use the latest version of LR, there are some buttons missing. Why is that. I haven´t used LR that much. Only a few times. Is there something I fail to do when I import pictures?
    Thank you in advance.

    What buttons are missing?
    What operating system?
A few details would really help.

  • I just began using my Apple iphone4 and I dont know why the backlight does not turn-off timer does not exist anywhere that I can find. So my battery gets drained when I'm not using my phone. Does anyone know how to adjust it?

Does anyone know why the backlight on my iphone4 does not turn off automatically?

It's called "auto-lock" - adjust the time in the Settings app to a lower amount.
