Firewire Drive no longer mounting

Hi, I've been using a Western Digital Firewire External My Book drive for time machine for awhile now, but it suddenly will not mount anymore. I have 2 others that I use for other stuff that still mount fine though.
It won't show up in Disk Utility either. I've tried shutting down my computer completely and unplugging everything and restarting like some said but that didnt work. I've rebuilt permissions also. The light is on on the front of the drive so it seems to be working.
I don't have a copy of disk warrior so I can't try that.
Any help would be appreciated,
thanks!!
Jeff

The only internationally available Firewire hard drive cases I've never had to put a firmware update on or change cables from are from http://www.macsales.com/ You can remove the hard drive from the external case from Western Digital, determine if it is Parallel ATA or SATA hard drive, and get the appropriate firewire hard drive case from http://www.macsales.com/ to read that kind of drive. After which time, it should work great. Other companies seem to require firmware updates from time to time, but not http://www.macsales.com/ Can't explain why.

  • Daisy-Chained External Drive No Longer Mounting

I have two external hard drives daisy-chained (firewire 800) to my iMac. The hard drive directly connected my iMac mounts fine. The daisy-chained hard drive no longer mounts, after mounting perfectly fine for a few months. I've tried restarting, etc with no success. Any help would be appreciated.

No, it does not mount directly. I did however try using the other hard drive's power cord and it mounted without problem. But this doesn't fix the problem.. only one drive is mounting. At least it seems I have ruled out a more serious problem with the drive itself. I'm contacting Lacie to get a new power cord. Hopefully, with a new power cord, this will resolve the issue and it isn't some sort of daisy-chain issue.
I think you have solved the problem by elimination.
You can prove that it's the power cord by using the "bad" one on the working drive. If it stops working, it's guaranteed to be the power cord.
I believe that there were some issues with some of the LaCie Power Supplies.

  • My firewire drive isn't mounting. The port is fine and the drive powers up and spins. Help anyone?

Hi, thanks in advance. My firewire drive isn't mounting. I have used this firewire drive for a few years and it has never had any problems at all. The port appears in the System Profiler and the drive is working fine. Do I need to update my firmware or something? I haven't dropped my drive or experienced any weird physical issues with either the firewire port or the drive (ie shocks from static, getting kicked accidentally, etc).
Do you have any thoughts on how I can fix this issue?  Its very critical, I have several client projects on this drive and will be SCREWED and out of a job soon if I can't get this situation solved. THANK YOU!!!

Another interesting issue, is that when the firewire (800) drive is connected, the system takes forever to boot (about 4 minutes). Without the firewire drive connected, it boots up automatically.
I suspect the long boot times is because the boot process is trying hard to get the disk checked and mounted which of doesn't happen when it is not connected.
Disk Utility doesn't see the drive at all.
Well that isn't good.  This disk may be (physically) damaged beyond repair or the format so corrupt that even DU doesn't know what to do with it.   But on the subject of firmware, you shouldn't need that for FW400/800 connections but what kind of enclosure are you using?  If there is a firmware update at all it would be from the maker of that enclosure for that enclosure.
Is it possible to remove the drive from the enclosure and put it into your mac pro?

  • Drives no longer mount - Only after restart do they mount

Upgrade to from 10.4 to 10.5 and ran all updates...currently have 10.5.4. My external drives no longer mount when i plug them in via usb port. Worked perfectly before upgrade. Additionally my ipod wont mount either. They dont show up in disc utility either...However if i have these devices plugged in with the computer turned on (and they aren't mounting) and i restart my computer then when it boots up again they mount and function just fine. but if i unmount and turn them off and turn them back on...they dont mount.
    any suggestions?

    Hi grant862
I seam to be having the same issue. I have a number of Flash cards and a flash card reader, well tow card readers actually. I cant get the cards to mount. I have tried swapping usb cables and card readers. I have tried both readers in all my USB ports (17" Mac Book - 10.5.4). The only way that I can get them to mount is if I plug the cards back into the cam, eras an connect them. I think there is a software glitch somewhere. I don't think its the usb ports as I have tried keyboards and mice connected via these ports with no issue. I don't expect an answer to this, but Grant - if you are still out there - I wanted you to know you weren't alone. I am going to try re-installing the 10.5.4 combi download and see what happens. Oh yes and 'repair permissions' (which I have already done once...) but am beginning to think that this is just a bit like saying a mantra as a way of calming me.

  • Firewire drive will not mount

Firewire drive will not mount USB mounts fine.

It's nearly impossible to offer any help given the dearth of information you provided.
What Mac are you using? What external FireWire hard drive are you trying to use? Is it a FW-400 or FW-800 interface? Have you tried any other FireWire device with that computer? Have you tried that FireWire drive with any other computer?

    Hi All,
A friend of mine has a Titanium Powerbook G4 500's with 640mb ram and OS 10.2. She has purchased a Fantom Drive 120gb Firewire drive to back up her work. The drive will not mount on her machine. It will mount on my G5 running 10.3.9. I went to the Fantom Site, and all I could find was a link to Apple's site on Tiger.
She bought a set of Panther disks and wanted to back up all of her stuff before the upgrade.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    David

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Hers should be the 10.2.8 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Firewire 800 external drive no longer mounting

My firewire 800 external hard drive is no longer mounting on my MBP. It powers up, spins, but has no reaction to being plugged into my computer. I've tried connecting it and the turning it on, and connecting it while it was already turned on. I've tried different cables and different types of adapter cables (fw800 to 400, fw800 to USB, etc.), but there is no communication between my drive and my Mac. Same goes if I connect it to my wife's Macbook, or my iMac at work.
I recently had the logic board and left i/o board replaced on my MBP, I'm not sure if this is relevant since the drive has worked since the replacements and I get the same results on other Macs.
    What should I do next?

who makes the drive set up?
OWC for example has a history of bad power supplies that make the drive not accessible (drive spins up but never spins all the way up)

  • Extl Drive : No longer mounting

I use my Lacie Firewire to backup my system. It is bootable and recently no longer mounts. It is daisy chain to another External Lacie Burner. I have taken the Drive
to another Mac, to ensure that my firewire connections are OK. I have also removed all peripherals and done a PRAM. Repaired permissions and Diskwarrior.
No joy. Any other suggestions please. Thanks

Could try this, except without doing the hot plugging for Firewire (some debate about whether or not Firewire hot plugging, plugging while a device is on, is harmful or not. Probably not harmful, but just to play it safe.)This helped someone else recently.
I solved such an issue with my firewire 800 drives via shutting down the Mac, pulling all cables (power, usb, audio, etc.), waiting for at least 15 seconds (I waited longer), and putting the power cable and keyboard/mouse cable back in.
Then start the Mac, and when it finished loading the system try again mounting your drive by putting the cable in.
It's an official procedure from Apple, but I can't seem to find the explanation on their side, the name of it escapes me.

  • 60 GB external Firewire Drive Won't Mount

I have a 60GB external Firewire Drive that I have been using for a long time. I just turned on the computer and it won;t mount. I opened up the Disk Utility and I see that on the left side it says "57.3 GB Maxtor." I repaired permissions and verify disk. It still won't mount.
I don't want to have to erase it if possible. There are files I need on that drive. How can I get it to mount so I can grab some files off of it and move it to another drive?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Edwurd,
What the message is telling you is that Disk Utility and the "underlying task," the Unix utility fsck, can't repair the volume.
Time for stronger medicine if the data is critical. There are commercial products that work differently and can recover disks when fsck can't. Look at Disk Warrior or Drive Genius. BUT... given that Disk Utility thinks it's a "non HFS volume," I wouldn't be optimistic.
If the external drive's data is unimportant - e.g., a backup you could rewrite - then see if Disk Utility can repartition and erase the drive. If only the catalog or partition map is bad, this will get you a working drive. But if you can't repartition with Disk Utility, suspect a hardware malfunction and check your warranty.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Firewire drives don't mount after 10.4.3 update

    G3 B&W
    OS 10.4.2
Everything working fine with 10.4.2. Two 3rd party external firewire drives mounted and working. Had not installed any 3rd party drivers. Updated to 10.4.3 and neither will mount. Don't show in System Profiler either. Is fix to "back up" to 10.4.2? Help?

    Offline: [email protected]

    Matthew,
Thanks for the tip but the disconnect/power down didn't work. I also zapped the PRAM. Additional information: Firewire drives do mount when running OS 9.2.2 alone. Under OS 10.4.3 System Profiler does not show any Firewire devices. Of course, I could boot up Classic in 10.4.3 but that seems like the long way around, and I am in the process of weaning myself off of OS 9.
I noticed from some recent posts that a lot of people are losing device connectivity when updating to OS 10.4.3.

  • Firewire drives won't mount on any port, tried different drives, cables

None of my 6 Firewire drives will mount today. Tried one at a time, FW 800, 400, jack on the front, the back, nothing. Tried different cables, restarting, unplugging everything, zapping the PRAM, turning on the drive first, still nothing. Drives work on a different computer. I'm all out of ideas! Thanks.

Hi dragonfly921, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Shut it down, remove all power, and remove all peripherals & the PRAM battery.
Let sit for a few minutes/hours, then reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) ...

  • FireWire drives won't mount

Neither of my FireWire drives will mount on either my iMac 20" G5 or my iBook G4...I have a 500GB WD MyBook and a La Cie 80G. I've gone through all the suggested tips, and still nothing. I've reset the PRAM several times, reset the firewire bus by turning off the computer and unplugging it and the drives for a while, etc. I've tried different cables, too.
The drive shows up in the system profiler as an unknown device but not in the Finder. I have a USB hub with a card reader and 4G SD card that shows up just fine. I tried the MyBook in the USB port but it didn't show up there either.
The power supplies are working, as the indicator lights are on for both drives.
The MyBook was working fine until recently; not sure when it stopped working. I hadn't used the La Cie for a while but hooked it up to store iMovie files.
I plugged a Canopus ADVC-55 analog-to-digital convert into the FW port on both computers and it showed up as a named device in System Profiler. That tells me the port is OK and the problem is with the HDs--right?
Very frustrating! Hope someone can help.
    Thanks in advance.

For what it's worth... I'm having the exact same issue and so are many others on the forums since 10.5.6.

I'm having a very similar issue as of the last few weeks at least. Periodically I'll turn my FW drive on and it won't mount and isn't visible in Disk Utility. This is usually after waking the computer from sleep.
The only way to get it back is to restart.
Also the console shows a long running list of errors that seem to occur non-stop when the drive is on, connected, but not mounting.
    AppleFWOHCI_AsyncTransmit::waitForDMA
    AppleFWOHCI_AsyncReceive::waitForDMA
I've also noticed that the system occasionally will not boot up and instead freezes on the Apple logo on startup. Not sure if this is related however.

  • Firewire drive no longer recognized after upgrade?

having an onset of problems the last 2 weeks.
first upgraded to 10.4.6 on mac mini 1.42 non-duo, worked a few days than acted weird with apps crashing. had to reinstall from 10.4 disk. seemed ok. repaired permissions, ect. after reinstall (and a subsequent power outage) a firewire drive attached at time was no longer recognized by mac mini or connected imacG3. reinstalled 10.4.2 on mac mini. installer unable to reinstall 10.4.6., I would like to have firewire drive recognized again. when attached to other firewire drive in daisy chain, says device unrecognized, other wise unable to get any info on drive. what to do?

I am having nearly the exact same issue as you are experiencing. My Western Digital Dual-Option Media Center 160 GB FW HD is going in and out big time. It seems to be there for a time but then conks out. I have to disconnect the power and now the drive seems to be malfunctioning.
Same story with my LaCie 52x CD Burner. I placed the Disk Warrior CD in there and the computer recognized the disc at first but then spinning beach balls galore!
This has to be one of the worst updates to an OS X system I can remember. I can only think PowerPC QA testing has gone through the toilet since the Intel move was completed.

  • LaCie Hard Drive No Longer Mounts on iBook G4

    Hello,
My LaCie 600 GB Hard drive will no longer mount onto my iBook G4. I had this problem about 6 months ago. It was solved by reformatting my whole computer through the installation disks that came with my computer. After I reformatted it, the hard drive was immediately recognized. I don't want to go that route again because I have a lot of programs on there that would take forever to reinstall. I have all of my important info backed up, just not the programs itself.
    I've tried running:
    Macaroni
    Utility Disk
    Data Rescue II
And neither of these came up with any "diagnosis" on why my hard drive won't mount. I check my cables through plugging my hard drive in other computers, and it works fine. I think it has to do with my hardware on my iBook G4.
When I plug it into my usb port, the blue light on my hard drive turns on, and I can hear the inside spinning. It just doesn't pop up onto my desktop. It doesn't show up in disk utility either.
Any ideas on what I can do?
    -Kristen

I would contact the folks at LaCie for their feedback.
