Firewire Drive Prevents Mac from Rebooting

Just added a G-Tech mini drive to our Mac Pro to be used for Time Machine backups after out 3rd Time Capsule failed.
Problem is now, when the Mac boots up it hangs on the user password login page 50% of the time and the only way to fix the issue is to pull out the Mac power cord and re-boot.
The Macs are running Lion and never suffered these boot issues before.  We now have the same problem on 3 Macs - all identical configurations.
The G-Tech drives are connected by Firewire 800 and are not set to be bootable drives.
Any idea what could be causing this?
Is it possible to automatically un-mount the external drive as the machine re-boots?

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to help me.
I have done as you say - These issues always happen after a long boot up.  The boot takes a couple of minutes and I know when it gets to the password page, its just going to hang without allowing me to enter a password.
This never happed before the drive was connected.
No crash or panic logs.

  • How to stop my Time Machine external hard drive preventing iMac from sleeping?

I have a late 2012 iMac, and have discovered that sometimes (I haven't noticed a pattern of when it doesn/doesn't happen) the computer will immediately wake up after I set it to Sleep (Apple Menu>Sleep). Through elimination I have found that it is the the USB 3.0 external hard drive I use as a Time Machine back-up that is the culprit; unplugging it then allows the computer to sleep. If I unplug it, then plug it back in later on, this normally solves the problem for a while, but not forever. This same Hard Drive didn't cause the wake problem on my previous '08 iMac.
A big issue is that when the machine immediately wakes from sleep, the display stays off (until I move the mouse) - this is good from a power saving point of view, but means I don't know if/when the machine is immediately waking from sleep (I have to listen to the fan when setting it to Sleep mode to hear if it has actually woken back up).
I've searched the forums, but can't find another poster with the same problem as myself. Can anyone advise a course for me to pursue to prevent this from happening?
    Thanks. Jamie

Hi Frank. Nope, I'm still having the same symptoms; the plugged in external drive (TIme Machine) will wake the machine up a couple of seconds after it winding down when put to into sleep mode. Ejecting the drive and then sleeping the machine works. After plugging it in again to do a Time machine backup, it will allow the computer to sleep soundly for the first few sessions (eg a few days of sleeping, waking, sleeping, waking, etc), but then it will then suddenly start preventing it from sleeping again after a while.
It seems I'm fortunate in my case that the display stays dark (or off?) when the machine has been woken from sleep, but this was actually preventing me from knowing the machine wasn't in fact asleep for quite some time; I only eventually cottoned on because there wasn't any delay when 'waking' my machine (which there normally is). I would then have to carefully listen to the spinning fans to know if in fact it had gone to sleep or not.
So, to summarise, unfortunately no, I haven't solved this yet. If anyone else has a solution, please let us know?
Also, I've noticed occasionally after waking that there is a relatively quiet 'crackle' sound (kind of electrical sounding) from the bottom-right area of the machine. This goes on every so often for about 30mins. I see this is also an issue with other people's late 2012 iMacs, but I've not seen if anyone has a solution to it?

  • Firewire Drives Randomly dropping from Desktop

Is there something I don't know about bad Firewire ports on this Mac Pro 2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon? I have 2 RocPro 850 1TB drives connected via FW800 (one in the front and one in the back). They just randomly disconnect and drop from my desktop. Any answers here?
    The nightmare has officially begun!

Actually... There are numerous posts documenting a wide array of firewire issues in a thread I started more than a month ago:

    You are not alone.

  • Prevent mac from sleeping

    Hello everyone,
Does anyone know how to prevent the imac from going to sleep when using the restore disk to start the system.  This is the state I need the imac in to create the requited backup before I whipe the system and do a clean install of Mountain Lion to resolve all my issues.  I have many system issues that started with upgrsade to snow leopard got worse with uprade from mobileme to icloud, and continue to pleague me with the latest upgrade to Mountan Lion.
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac8,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM81.00C1.B00
      SMC Version:          1.30f1
    24-inch, Early 2008
Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I can not add anymore physical ram
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB

Thanks, but these options are not available from the restore disk startup.  I am usinig the diskutility on the restore disk to create the clone of my had drive.  I think that the caffeinate command is working, but I am not able to run the diskutility from that terminal window.

  • Hard drive prevents waking from sleep

I have a mac mini 2011 2.5Ghz core i5 that has developed an unusual problem. I just got a new Lacie D2 quadra external hard drive and if I leave it connected as the backup I cannot get the computer to wake up. When I move the mouse or tap the keyboard, the screen does not turn on, but the hard drive responds and starts lighting up. This has been happening fairly regularly and the only way I can get the computer to start is to unplug the drive (and suffer the improper disk removal warning upon waking up) or hard restart the computer. I don't know if it matters, but in terms of the rest of the system, I have the mini attached to a 30" cinema display via the thunderbolt and dual-link dvi-to-mini displayport adapter. But again, this just started happening upon connecting the new drive and seems to be remedied by disconnecting or turning off the drive before sleep. Any thoughts, other than always make sure its disconnected? Thanks!

Try Ejecting the External HD before sleeping the Mac.
Then see if the Mac Mini will wake and re-mount the External HD.

  • Mail app preventing mac from shutting down

Trying to shut down mac book pro. Just imported all mail into mail app. Error message stating mail canceled shut down and to quit mail and try again. Did that, same error message

Was your import completed? Do you have any other ongoing Mail activity? Check what the Mail process is doing:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
I would suggest as a start to move the com.apple.mail cache folder to the Trash, but do not Empty it. You will find it in one of the Cache folders in the /Library/ or /Home/Library/ folder unless you are running Mavericks.

  • Prevent Mac from going to sleep

    Hy guys!
Yes, I know that there are a lot of programs, like Caffeine or Slepless ecc..
But the program I'm looking for should avoid sleep _even under my command_
(.. because sometimes my dad doesn't realize that my Ipod is charging, or I'm importing photos or downloading files..)
    Thank you v.m. =)

Maybe I didn't make myself clear... If I follow your way, everytime I click on the "sleep" button, my mac goes obviously to sleep... That's exactly the thing I want to avoid... =))
    Thank you!

  • Firewire drives all gone?

would love any info that might help.
i have three 250gb firewire drives dasiychained to my computer, and today i changed my ownership and permissions so that other users on the computer could not access those drives. i then restarted after installing the new java update, and none of the firewire drives will mount to the desktop. they're all there in disk utility and i can mount/unmount and eject them, hearing them spinning up and down as they should, so i know they're not physically damaged, but why cant i see them anymore?

You wrote: "everytime i tried to change anything it gave me an error code -60002, which i cant find any documentation on"That's a rare error code. A Google search finds exactly two references, both to the same post on another forum and without a solution.
I suspect you can't fix this while logged in as root because the immutable flag is set on the drives. If you log in as root and look at the Get Info window for the drives in question, suspect "Locked" will be checked in the top (General) panel and you can't change that. Correct?
You're going to have to start up in start up in single user mode to fix this. I'm trying to put together some instructions for you but it would first help to know how the system is seeing the FireWire drives.
From your Admin account or in root, type the following command in Terminal:
    ls -alh /Volumes
    then press Return.
If that command does not list your FireWire drives when used from your Admin account, try the command.
    sudo ls -alh /Volumes
then press Return. Type your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
The command above should list all mounted volumes. It should give you an output similar to the following:<pre>total 24

    • Specify which drives/volumes are the FireWire drives or volumes. The drive/volume names are shown in the last column in the sample output above.
    • If your FireWire drives are partitioned into more than one partition per drive, please also note that.
    • Likewise if any of the FireWire drives or partitions are supposed to be bootable, please also specify which ones.

  • Firewire Drives No Longer Appear

All of my firewire drives have dissapeared from the desktop. This is what I have tried:
    1) repaired permissions
    2) unplugged drives, restarted, plugged drives back in
    3) switched firewire ports
    4) connected drives to my laptop - they appeared on the laptop
    5) switched users
    6) tried to locate drives with Disk Utility
    7) put two different sets of commands into Terminal to show devices
Nothing shows up. Interesting note: an audio popping noise that I have had off and on, and could be temporarly stopped by switching users, is now completely gone. No pops but no drives.
What else can I try? Could the firewire card just be bad?
    Thanks,
    Nathan

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.3.9 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Cheers!

  • MacBook won't boot off Firewire drives

i just got a MacBook and couldn't be more pleased but i just tried to use the Firewire drive to boot from but it doesn't show up as option for restart. the drives( i tried two) are loaded with 10.4.10 and show up on the desktop and work fine but it's odd the Mac won't boot from them. had no issue connecting to my Pismo. both show up as start up discs. i looked in the forums but didn't see this issue brought up. a little help please.

Does this mean i have to (can i?) install Tiger from my MB's discs on to a connected firewire drive and it can then be used as a start up drive for the unit? Thanks much.
Yup. Alternatively, you can 'clone' the MB's internal hd to the external firewire hd. Two of the most widely used methods of achieving this are:
    1. Carbon Copy Cloner - http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    2. SuperDuper! - http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

  • Booting off external firewire drive

Hi Ive cloned my internal imac drive using superduper.
Inside the startup application i can now see my external drive as bootable.
I am trying to boot off the external drive TARGET disk mode. Is this correct to get the os to boot off the external FW drive?

    Hello Joe.
You don't use Target disk mode to do so. When connected, you can select the external firewire drive to boot from via System Preferences > Startup Disk or use the Startup Manager during startup or restart.

Highlighted the firewire drive, clicked Partitions, named it "Backup". Clicked Options -> GUID -> Partition
I backed up his computer with SuperDuper onto Backup. SuperDuper automatically makes the drive bootable. At the end Backup was mounted on the desktop and all files are there.
But Backup wouldn't boot the computer. Instead I got a grey screen for a long time, then the Apple logo with the spinning cog, then after a few more minutes a circle with a bar through it (like a no smoking sign minus the cigarette)
    Things I tried after this....
Partitioned the drive again, double checking that I had selected GUID
Erased the drive zeroing out all the data
Backing up using CCC (with make drive bootable option checked) instead of SuperDuper
Could not get this drive to boot his computer.
Then took the drive back home. Tried doing it with my MacMini (same problem)
Then plugged it into my Powerbook, Partitioned it as Apple Partition Map, ran SuperDuper, rebooted from it fine.
My conclusion: The drive will boot a G4 just fine, but not an Intel based Mac.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    A workaround:
The drive enclosure also has support for USB "1.1/2.0", including the ever important cable.
I reconnected it to the Macbook, partitioned the drive back to GUID, then I used super duper to back the Macbook drive (again!). I used firewire (only because it was much quicker - 6Mb/s vs 2.8Mb/s)
Once I did the backup, I ejected the external drive, disconnected it, then plugged it back in with USB, then selected it as the start up disk, then hit restart. Machine rebooted just fine although very slowly.
Still doesn't answer the question of why booting via the firewire port works fine with a G4 mac but not Intel.

  • How to prevent USB or firewire drive from mounting?

If I have a USB or firewire drive connected to my mac at startup, but I don't want the Finder to mount it at startup, how would I go about it? If I can't prevent it from being mounted, is there a way to have it unmounted as soon as possible?
    TIA
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Eject the drive and disconnect the cable to the USB or FW port.

  • HT5299 Thunderbolt-Can you use an  adaptor From a thunderbolt External drive to a firewire 800/400 Mac

Thunderbolt-Can you use an  adaptor From a thunderbolt External drive to a firewire 800/400 Mac

No. The Thunderbolt to Firewire adapters only work to connect a Firewire drive to a Thunderbolt port. They do not work in reverse, to connect a Thunderbolt-only drive to a Firewire port. If the only port your drive has is a Thunderbolt port and all you have on the Mac is Firewire, you can't use that drive with that computer.

  • Can Leopard be installed from a Firewire Drive or Another Mac?

I have a Mac Mini with a faulty Super Drive. It's not really a problem since I only use it as a network appliance and rarely install software via CD/DVD. But now I don't know know how to upgrade it to Leopard. And since its my File server, I can't use it with Time Machine.
Is it possible to put the install on one of my Firewire Drives and install it from there?
    Any advice?

    Dear Cabak
You may have options, but I am not sure as I have only two days with Leopard thus far, but....
I am positive with Tiger it was possible to start the client computer up in Target Disk Mode and use the host computer to "upgrade", "archive and upgrade", or "clean install" the operating system.
You will actually start the HOST computer up with the install disc AFTER you have the client computer in TDM. You simply choose the client computer hard drive and select the type of install you prefer to do.
Remember to check the client computer for any offending files that will cause you to get caught in a blue screen freeze on startup. There are plenty of threads in the discussions about people having this problem. Read the following document if you are not aware of the situation.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306857
The beautiful thing about this (if there were one) is that you can remove these files easily while in Target Disc Mode. These are the files you should get rid of before the upgrade process...

I think you will be pleased with the outcome of your efforts.
