Firewire Drive Recognized, but not Mounting

Hi all - I have a peculiar problem with my iMac as it is not mounting anything Firewire.  System Profiler recognizes there is something attached via Firewire, it even displays the information about it, but there is no disk to be accessed.
Also, the iMac can successfully work in Target Disk mode on another computer, but so far won't recognize an external hard drive (WD 2TB) or MacBook in Target Disk mode.  Also, I only have a Firewire 400 cable to use, and the computer recognized and mounts the drive using USB 2.0.
Any suggestions?  I've already tried resetting the SMC and PRAM...  Not sure what I'm up against now...
Thank you!
-Kevin Cramblet

You saying the external drive works with USB and doesn't with FW and you only have a FW400 cable?  I assume your mac uses FW800.  FW800 requires a 9-pin connector.  FW400 a 6-pin.  Cables and adapters exist to go from 9-pin to 6-pin.  But I don't think plugging a 6-pin FW400 cable into 9-pin FW800 socket will work.  That's probably your problem.

  • USB Flash Drive Powered but Not Mounting

I have two USB flash drives that refuse to mount on my 13" MacBook Pro running 10.6.7.
The flash drive powers on, and blinks a bit.
The drive shows up in Disk Utility but the volumes are listed generically (like disk1s2) rather than having their proper volume name.
Clicking the mount button with a colume selected appears ineffective.
Trying to eject the drive results in:
The disk “Kingston DataTraveler 200 Media” could not be unmounted.
    Ideas
Pulling the drive out without ejecting crashes Disk Utility.  The Disk Utility Log doesn't say anything helpful.
I have two drives I've tried, opne the Kingston above which has two HFS+J volumes and another one formatted FAT32.  Both drives work great on a different MacBook.  I don't have other drives on hand to test at the moment.
I have MacFUSE and NTFS-3G and Parallels 6, installed, I haven't tried disabling them yet.  Anyone else experiencing similar issues?  Figured it out yet? Ideas?

Just so you don't think you're alone, I've been having the same problem, but with firewire devices. I'm searching around to see if there's a solution. I re-ran the 10.4.3 combo updater and it seemed to "fix" things for a while, but now the problem is back. I was in the middle of a copy from a FW CD-drive and it just disconnected. Then the iMac disconnected a hard drive attached to the other FW port. So it's happening on both ports, even when the computer is actively engaged in something.
I'm going to run the updater again. Then I might try downgrading to 10.4.2.

  • Firewire Drive Detected But Not Showing Up...

I have a Lacie Fireiwire drive that is detected by XP, it's recognized in the bottom right menu under the "Remove Hardware Safely" thing. But I can't access the files through Explorer, the drive just doesn't show up under my computer. I've tried with Firewire 400 & 800. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. Running MacBook pro from mid 2007 with windows 7 64-bit. Everything runs perfectly except my external hard drives aren't seen. They work in snow leopard. And I can also acces the mac drive from windows 7 fine. Anyone else having this issue?

I had a little time to elaborate with and getting involved more deeply. I found out that there was an old installation of IrfanView (some older version) which probably interacted with the iTunes. After unistallation both iTunes (including registry entries and all files from disk) and that sh*t (=IrfanView), the new iTunes installation ran properly and the problem was solved.
It could be caused by the exact combination of: Win7, iTunes 9 or 10, IrfanView, Lenovo T400 and probably something more I cannot recognize .
p.s. During the problem solution I bought me a brandnew iPhone 4 so I was able to test it both with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3. The result was - It does not matter what iPhone do you have...

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • My Firewire drive isnt mounting - can be seen in the disk utility but not mounting.

I have an older MicroNet 500GB Harddrive that has always been picky about what cables it uses. I used it not that long ago to download a mass amout of files to transfer from one computer to another and it mounted no problem. My iMac is newer bought it last year and has the 800 FW port and the Mirconet has a 400 FW and 2 800 FW ports.
I have tried multiple cables 800 to 800, 400 to 800, etc. I can see the drive in my Disk Utility and have run the first aid protocols to no avail. It refuses to mount to my computers...
Any one have any advice before I spend $200-300 to extract the data at Best Buy.
Thanks so much for any advice.

Was the external hard drive connected to a Mac or PC, when you transferred the large amount of files to it?  I'm wondering if it has a corrupted directory, and needs a third-party product like DiskWarrior (which is better than Disk First Aid) to straighten it out.  It's possible that the FireWire bridge board in the external case is bad (which could explain its hypersensitivity to cables used).  I wouldn't pay $200-$300 for data retrieval, before exhausting less expensive options, assuming that the drive's warranty has expired.  Examine the case to see how it's held together - often the cover sleeve is secured to the rear plate with small screws that can be removed.  Sometimes, one screw is covered with warranty-void tape, which can be peeled back/off.  If it's a plastic case, you may run into problems.  Some plastic cases have hidden snap latches, that require a special tool to release without breaking them.  If you can remove the case's cover, you can access the bare drive.  Remove its mounting screws (either on the side or bottom of the drive) and disconnect the data and power cables.  With the drive removed, you can use an adapter like this one, which will adapt the IDE or SATA interface of the drive (whichever it has) for connection to a USB 2 port on your computer.  This is a generic piece of hardware - you don't need to buy one marketed for use with Macs.  If the drive doesn't have a mechanical and/or electronic problem, it should mount on the desktop.

  • 2.5" Firewire Drive - Permanently Connected, But Not Mounting?

I've been having trouble with a firewire drive (Seagate GoFlex FW800, 2.5" bus-powered drive) on my 2010 iMac, which recently failed, but I've found conflicting information to suggest whether the problems I've been having are part of a wider issue with OS X - for example, there are other recent posts on here which seem to be having issues with firewire drives, but slightly different issues.
Basically, I wanted it always connected (obviously it spins itself down when not being accessed). However, if I shut down or sleep my iMac, 90% of the time when I turn it back on the drive would be visible, but would just hang indefinitely if I attempted to access it (until I pulled the cable out). If I plugged it straight back in, it worked fine from then on, until I next shut my iMac down.
I've seen some things on the internet suggesting that a recent update to OS X broke it (i'm fully up-to-date), but I can't remember when it started going wrong so not sure whether that's true.
I've seen other things on the internet that suggest that certain brands of drive cannot be made to restart with the Mac, and that only certain firewire controllers are supported. But i'm sure I used to be able to do this when I first got the drive...?
I've also seen some suggestions from last year that it's an occasional problem that can be resolved by resetting SMC and PRAM - both of which I've tried and did nothing. I also tried disk repair, which had no effect.
So, can anyone shed any light on this. Is it a known problem with OS X, that certain FW800 drives aren't supported? Is it just a glitch that sometimes happens? Does anyone else use a Seagate GoFlex FW800 drive without these problems?
Any suggestions / experiences greatly appreciated.
    David

You saying the external drive works with USB and doesn't with FW and you only have a FW400 cable?  I assume your mac uses FW800.  FW800 requires a 9-pin connector.  FW400 a 6-pin.  Cables and adapters exist to go from 9-pin to 6-pin.  But I don't think plugging a 6-pin FW400 cable into 9-pin FW800 socket will work.  That's probably your problem.

  • EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE NO LONGER RECOGNIZED, DOES NOT MOUNT

Hello everyone, this is not necessarily a mac mini issue
last night was working on my mac mini (intel 2007), it froze up, couldnt even restart, so i held the power button (hard reset i guess)
it came back on but then would NOT recognize my external HD, (which is an iomega mini max 1TB)
perhaps this was considered by my mac as "not ejecting or putting the disc away properly "
i did a ton of research (here and elsewhere)..found various hints/fixes but nothing works so far
i tried using different cables, firewire, usb..ran hardware test...zapped the pram....tried it on my ibook (which also does not recognize it)...turned the hd off and on...
i unplugged everything, power to mac, all cables.. left overnight...tried again with no luck
    restarted, powered down...nothing
tried finding the the external hd partitions in "/Volumes" to trash. there was ONE of the partitions there, which i trashed - no luck (i had 3 partitions on the external hd)
was going to swap the hd to another enclosure, but the mini max hd wont fit it/work
    disk utility doesnt see it
i tried a few things with terminal - nothing
i am unable to open firmware (via commandoption+OF, as this is an intel)
it doesnt seem to be a problem with the firewire port, as that port recognized my video camera
im pretty sure the HD and my data is fine, its just that my mac doesnt recognize it. its like its already "on" or "mounted"
it cant find the path or map or something like that
in system profiler it comes up as:
    "Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec"
any ideas? why would force shutting down (by holding the power button) cause my mac to no longer recognize the external HD?
i have NOT tried "discwarrior" or norton. trying to avoid having to pay $100 and i read that others with this problem bought discwarrior, which didnt see it or help
i did try something called "total recall" by virtualab - it did NOT see the external HD
and as i mentioned above, disk utility does not recognize it
ok please let me know, i could really use some help here
i do usually backup to dvd's but not everything..also did a ton of work recently that was NOT backed up
hope to hear from you soon!!!
    thanks in advance, andrew

hello, i dont have a UPS but have it connected to a power strip
    what might this mean?
btw - when this first happened (3 days ago) i used disk utility/first aid to examine my mini, it PASSED
yesterday i thought what the heck, ill run first aid again
and this is what i got:
    verifying volume "mac mini"
    checking HFS plus volume
    checking extents overflow file
    checking catalog file
incorrect block count for file AbletonTmp-0001
(it should be 1 instead of 0)
    1%)
    checking multi-linked files
    checking catalog hierarchy
    checking extended attributes file
    checking volume bitmap
    checking volume bitmap
    or repair",0)
    checking volume information
    volume header needs minor repair
the volume mac mini needs to be repaired
error: the underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume needs repair
it wasnt able to fix it while booting/running off the mini so
i then ran disk utility on the OSX install disc and was able to fix that problem
but alas, no luck with the external HD, still not recognized
the AbletonTmp-0001 makes sense because that was one of the programs i was running when it crashed
i was hopeful that fixing that problem would help.
ive been through quite a few crashes and restarts like that, i wonder why this time it caused such a serious problem
i would imagine there are a ton of people who have to force a restart or dont eject the HD, or unplug it, etc
i wonder why there isnt an easier/better way for a mac to deal with an external hd/flash etc. are pc's as sensitive with ex hd's?
ive had to tell new mac owners again and again -"no! you have to eject it first!"
ok well thanks in advance for any further advice/help
it means a lot to me, so thank you!!

  • Xserve Not Mounting Firewire Drive and Keyboard Not Working On KVM Switch

A couple of days ago I was swapping out my monthly firewire(800) backup to put the daily one back in place and my daily firewire backup drive will not mount. I've tried swapping out the cables, tried USB and Firewire400 with no avail. I tested the drive on my G5 and whapaa it mounted right away and the data is readable. For some reason my Xserve ignores it. I checked that the lock is in the unlock position so that's not the issue. I ran an xrdiags test last night and it came out fine. I also applied all of the latest updates. HELP!!!
Not sure if this is related, but my Xserve has begun to ignore my KVM switch so I have not direct keyboard/mouse connection. What could be the problem?
The backup drives are Western Digital My Books.

Problem fixed. Follow the instructions on this KB article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
So if you ever have these symptoms, follow the instrucions above, it works like a charm.

  • External firewire disk partition will not mount

I have two external hard drives connected by a firewire to my 2002 G4 iMac running OSX 10.3.9. One is a 160GB and the second a 360GB drive.
I was out of the room when the area experienced a minor power drop in voltage and when I came back the iMac had the message to shut down and restart. When I restarted everything appeared normal until I realised that one partition did not mount on the 360GB drive. I ran Disk Utility to check the disk and it found some issues (I failed to write them down..) but Disk Utility appeared to fix them.
The disk has 2 partitions and only one of the two partitions will not mount (the second partition works fine!). Disk Utility says that both partitions check OK.
I have rebooted several times. I have removed all other external attachments and rebooted but still the partition will not mount.
I cannot see the partition in Finder. The second partition on the disk is available to see and use in Finder.
I have selected the partition in Disk Utility (grayed out) and tried the "mount" button but nothing happens. For some 18 months up until now the drive has worked fine although I did notice a couple of times it took a while for the drive to open up in Finder and other applications. I use that particular partition daily, it has approx 100GB used of the 150GB total space.
When I ran Disk Utility it comes up with a variation in the results compared with the partition that has mounted OK. The result of running "Verify Disk" is listed below. The only diffeerence between the two partitions is the first line of each volume. Does the ",0" following "Checking HFS Plus volume." for the first partition called "Genesys1" indicate anything?
    DISK UTILITY REPORT
    Verifying volume “Genesys1”
    Mounting Disk(S,"Checking HFS Plus volume.",0)
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Genesys1 appears to be OK.
    Verifying volume “Genesys2”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Genesys2 appears to be OK.
    2 volumes checked
       2 HFS volumes verified
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards

Hello! Power failures are murder on disk drive directories as you have found out. Your best shot is to get DISKWARRIOR. It is the "gold standard" for these types of problems and can usually resolve the issue when Disk Utility cannot. As with any utility there are times when even it cannot fix things but it's the best there is at resolving such issues. Tom

  • External Firewire Drive Has Now Showing mounting with Intilize

i have a seagate 1tb external firewire drive. its been working and has about 500gigs of info on it. today it is showing up as a unformatted drive. disk warrior is not seeing it. is there another program that could repair maybe tech tool or any other suggestions
    thanks

If Disk Warrior won't see it.....ouch.
Data Rescue II is good, but again, if DW won't see, it might be toast, sorry.
As well, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.

...perhaps it is a bus issue and the drive itself is ok. Do you have another computer/cable etc. to test it with...

  • Ext drive recognized but...??

My mac mini 1.66 running with 1.25gb ram and the latest OS is having trouble with either external drive.
I have one usb/firewire drive formatted fat32. The other is sata (with a sata to usb adapter) formatted Mac extended Journaled. Both will come up on the desk top but will reset finder when I try to open them directly.
I found a temporary solution. If I do a command-F to search the ext. drive it will find files and folders and I can drag a file from the internal drive to the folder icon of the ext. drive that displays in the 'find' window. It writes without difficulty. Likewise the reverse. Writing from the ext. to the int.
So- I can not open the ext. drive to the highest level window. Once I have an icon displaying a folder from the ext. drive I can open that folder/sub folder without a problem.
My flash drives work fine on the same USB port.

Did you ever figure out what to do? because I have the same problem. I had a bum disk at first but got a new one. Have now installed 3 times. Still get the spinning wheel and freeze everytime I try to do anything.

    luc

Luke, many of the peripials such as cameras, printers, scanners, some will plug right in and work.
Others, need to plugged in and restart your computer, for them to work.
and last but not least some need there own drivers to operate correctly.
Those that need drivers normally come with an insallation CD for this purpose... Cheers...Don
