Firewire drive reviews/resources?  how to avoid another failed drive??

i have been scavenging online for quite a while and was wondering if anyone could point me to some good resources in purchasing a new firewire drive. mainly looking for resources discussing which brands/models notoriously have problems (eg, LaCie i will never purchase again). i am looking for 200-300Gb, mainly for video editing and backup. thanks-- L

Not to add to LaCie's bad reputation here lately. But I would say it's takes a while to get customer service from them. They do not have an 800# and they are hard to contact when a problem occurs.(waiting on an e-mail response for a month is something else too.) It took close to about 4 different times before I finally got a whole new external firewire DVD burner back from them. I had to ship it out to Oregon 3 different times because the firewire connection wouldn't work.At one time it worked. You would think after the 2nd time they would have sent me a brand new one. I just received a brand new one before my year warranty was up.
I will never buy another LaCie brand again despite their good reviews in the MacMall magazine and other Mac info. It took about 7 months before my problem was resolved. To me that's too long.

  • How to Avoid another Black X Over the Battery?

    Forgive me if this is already a topic. If so, please direct me to the correct thread.
    I was recently working on my Late 2010 Macbook Pro 13 inch laptop when it just shutdown. It took about 5 minutes to start back up, and I immidatley noticed that there was a black X over the battery symbol, and the fan was running at a full (and a very loud) speed. I shut it down and plugged in the power cord, which only glowed very faintly.
    After some googleing, I figured out what was wrong and fixed it using a different thread. I basically had to restart the SMC. The thread I used is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    However, even though it helped me fix the problem, it didn't answer any questions. So, if you could please help me. Why did this happen to my Mac? How did resetting the SMC fix the problem? How can I avoid this problem in the future? Is this an issue with the battery, or is it something else?
    I want to know what I did to make this happen and how to avoid it in the future, if it's possible. All input is appreciated. I am not very computer savy when it comes to the inner workings, so I'm hoping someone smarter than me can help me understand what just happened with my computer.
    Thanks!

    An SMC reset can 'fix' several battery issues -
    A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
    The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
    The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
    The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity
    - but I've no idea why you had your problem in the first place, so I can't tell you how to avoid it in the future. Maybe you let your battery drain completely down? I don't know - but now you know the 'fix' for it should it happen again.

  • How to avoid redialing failed calls when unlocking an iphone

    when using my iphone 4 with ios7 in my car via bluetooth, i have the issue that when a call drops for one or other reason; the iphone wants to recall that failed call when unlocking my iphone at arrival.
    This is new since i upgraded my phone to ios7. with earlier versions i never had this issue.
    it looks to me to a mistake in the software statemachine where missed calls are kept in a buffer, even when i redialed the person using my car kit just some minutes later.

    And the worst and most stupid thing happens when that person already called you back. And while talking with them again you take your phone and try to unlock it to go to home screen (for ex to reply to a message you just received), and it starts calling a person you speak right now)). And they are asking: we are talking already, how did you just call me????

  • How do I install a bootable copy of Tiger to an external Firewire drive?

    I've got a problem with my optical drive and cannot boot from a CD or DVD on my 17" flat panel iMac, running 10.2.8. I have bought Tiger and would like to upgrade my OS but want to be able to run some disc repair utilities on the iMac prior to doing the upgrade but can't run them on my boot disc.
    I'd like to be able to install Tiger on my external FW hard drive, install Techtool pro on that same drive and then try to repair the internal drive on my iMac by booting from the external drive. Is that possible? Is it a good idea? Can I install to the external drive from my internal Superdrive without being able to boot from the install DVD? How should I do that?
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    Michael

    Because you must boot from the Tiger DVD in order to install Tiger I'm afraid you are somewhat out of luck. However, with no guarantee either express or implied here's something you can try:
    First, download a freeware utility called Carbon Copy Cloner from www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com. Second, connect your Firewire drive and insert the Tiger DVD into the optical drive. Be sure it mounts on the Desktop along with the Firewire drive. Third, open your Disk Utility from the Utilities folder and use it to format or erase the Firewire drive. If you prefer you may wish to partition the Firewire drive to allocate a partition for the Tiger DVD (you will need about 6 GBs.) Fourth, open the CCC utility and click on the Lock icon beside the grayed out Clone button and authenticate. Then click on the Preferences icon. In the section labeled "Target Disk Options" be sure that the box labeled "Make bootable" is checked. No other items should be used. Click on the Save button. Fifth, select the Tiger DVD as the Source Disk, select the partition on the Firewire drive as the Target Disk. Now click on the Clone button.
    Go away for a while because the clone process will take time. Once it finally completes you can eject the Tiger DVD. You now should be able to boot the computer from the Firewire drive partition. Open your Startup Disk preference pane, select the Tiger partition on the Firewire drive from the icon list, then click on the Restart button.
    If this works your machine will boot into the Tiger installer from the Firewire drive. You can then install it onto your iMac. I would suggest you use the Archive and Install option. You may find the following helpful:

  • How do I back up my Boot Camp partition to external firewire drive?

    I have a 15 GB Windows XP Boot Camp partition (FAT32). I want to back it up to a 120 GB external Firewire drive. (I know the backup won't be bootable). In OX X Disk Utility, I formatted the external drive as MS-DOS (FAT). I planned to do the backup using the Windows Backup utility.
    However, when booted into WinXP, Windows will not recognize the external hard drive. I thought I might need to create a FAT32 partion of 32 GB or less on the external drive, but I apparently can't do this in OS X or Windows (since Windows doesn't recognize the drive).
    Any suggestions on how to backup the Boot Camp partition will be appreciated. I'm mainly interested in preserving all programs and data. Ideally, a clone could be created that could be restored back to the original partition in bootable form, but from studying this and other forums, it dosn't seem to be easy to do this for a FAT32-formatted volume.

    My goal was to create a bootable clone of my FAT32 Boot Camp partition, while at the same time increasing the size of the partition from 15 GB to 32 GB if possible. This is what I did:
    1. As suggested in this thread, I used Disk Utility to create a disk image. I formatted it as MS-DOS (FAT), and made it 32 GB in size.
    2. Used the Finder to copy all files from my 15 GB Windows XP partition to the new disk image.
    The following steps were only to determine if the disk image is a viable backup:
    3. Removed the internal hard drive with my original Win XP partition, and installed a new internal hard drive.
    4. Used Boot Camp Assistant to create a 32 GB Boot Camp partition on the new internal drive.
    5. Inserted my Win XP installation disk and started the Windows installation. Formatted the new partition as FAT32. (I used the long rather than the quick format method--not sure if this was necessary.)
    6. Continued the Windows installation to the point of restarting the computer, at which time I used the Option key to boot back into OS X.
    7. Used the Finder to copy all the files from the 32 GB disk image to the new Boot Camp partition. (This overwrote a few Windows files installed by the aborted Win XP installation.)
    8. Restarted and used the Option key to select the new 32 GB Boot Camp Partition. Windows booted as usual with all files, programs, etc. from the original 15 GB partition. Windows did complain about "new hardware" and required a restart, but all appears normal.
    This indicates that the disk image containing all the files from my original Boot Camp partition is a viable backup, and can be used to restore the partition if necessary. I'm not sure if formatting the disk image as MS-DOS (rather than Mac OS extended) was necessary, or not.

  • How to access another resource in Groupwise

    Could anyone tell me or direct me to a sample of some code, that shows how to access another resource in Groupwise with VB.
    The main goal is to send a appointmentsfrom another resource by accessing this resource that you have authority from own mailaccount
    or from an account I have access to.
    This so far I have come:
    Dim objApp
    Dim objAccount As Account
    Dim objDraftMsg
    objApp = CreateObject("NovellGroupWareSession")
    ' objAccount = objAccount.ObjType.egwResource
    objAccount = objApp.Login("", "") 'My own account but want to access either the account that owns the resource or from my own
    ' objAccount = objApp.objtype.egwresource("Schema")
    objDraftMsg = objAccount.WorkFolder.Messages.Add("GW.MESSAGE.APP OINTMENT")
    Dim date1 As New Date(2013, 5, 2, 8, 30, 0)
    objDraftMsg.StartDate = date1
    objDraftMsg.Duration = 1.5 / 24 ' duration
    objDraftMsg.OnCalendar = True
    objDraftMsg.Subject.PlainText = "Testar schema" ' Subject
    objDraftMsg.BodyText.PlainText = "Hlsar Giggi" ' Body
    objDraftMsg.Recipients.Add("XX")
    objDraftMsg.Send()

    I don't have time to write code but as I recall you have to PROXY into
    the account. There's a proxy method IIRC that returns an Account from
    which you can send mail if you were granted rights to do so.

  • Moving pics to a firewire drive - how do I tell iphoto where they are

    I moved my photo library - like 2500 images - to a firewire drive to preserve space on the system drive. Now when I boot iphoto it shows only an outline of each photo. I want to know how I tell iphoto where my pictures are located, without having to do that every time I boot the app. or without importing them again, which would make a copy in the system folder again. YUCK! Help please!

    Now when I boot iphoto it shows only an outline of each photo.<<<</div>
    First of all, it appears that you did not move the library correctly. It MUST be moved as an ENTITY. Don't even think about opening up the library and moving parts of it. If you made a mistake here, you need to undo that mistake before you proceed.
    Be reminded that a drag to a different disk is always a copy so initially iPhoto will still access the library in the ORIGINAL location. Eventually, you want to trash that library but, before you do, you should check out the one in the new location. You need to tell iPhoto where to look only once. Hold down the Option key while starting iPhoto and, when you see the menu, direct it to the new location. Check everything out and, when you're satisfied, trash the library that still exists in the old location.
    By the way, once iPhoto "knows" the location of the library, ALL imports will go there. Period.

Requirement is after one table is printed Next table should be start printing without overlapping on next further table... Hi Sandesh.
    Put your table in subform. (one for each)
    And than add one more subform and include all 3 table's subforms in single subforms.
    All subforms should be flowed.

  • How to install tiger on external firewire drive

    I'd like to upgrade my dual 2GHz Power PC G5 to 10.5, but I need access to OS9 from time to time. To solve this I wanted to install 10.4 with OS9 on my external HDD. I partitioned my Western Digital drive (connected by FW800) and installed 10.4 from the install disk. However, when I select it as the startup disk, the startup fails to identify the disk and starts from the internal drive.
    I tried to follow instructions from an old post, but one thing that was different was that when partitioning my harddrive, I did not have the option for GUID, I just had the option for Apple Partion Map. Oddly, now that I installed OSX 10.4, the option for GUID appears, but still seams incorrect since I'm on a G5 CPU.
    Any ideas why I can't boot from the external drive? Any suggestions on how to install OS9 and migrate my user folders over when I get it working?
    Thanks,
    Marcus

    Many Western Digital firewire drives will not boot a PPC mac. From this WD support page:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787
    The following external hard drives are not bootable on Power PC based Macintosh computers systems through USB/FireWire 1394(a/b):
    * My Book Essential Edition
    * My Book Essential Edition 2.0
    * My Book Home Edition
    * My Book Mirror Edition
    * My Book Office Edition
    * My Book Premium Edition II
    * My Book Pro Edition II
    * My Book Studio Edition
    * My Book Studio Edition II
    * My Passport Studio
    * My Passport Elite
    * My Passport Essential
    * WD Passport
    * WD Passport (Silver)
    If your drive is new and on the list, I would try to return it and get a different brand.

  • CS5 - Can't save to firewire drives "file open by another application" error

    Hi There,
    We can't seem to use Fireworks CS5 with external drives. If we have a file open and try to save back to the disk, we receive an error saying it could not save because the file is open by another application - "Save As" seems to work though.
    Is any one else experiencing this or have a fix?
    Cheers
    Ben

    Thanks for that Sarthak,
    I don't have a USB drive but can confirm that I can save files when the file is on the mac desktop or on a USB stick without any issues.
    So yes, at this point I think the issue is confined to Firewire drives (at least on my system which is 10.5.8).
    Cheers

  • How to reestablish connection to external FireWire drive with iTunesLibrary

    Hello all. Here's the scenario I would like help with, please:
    I currently have a G5 Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac running Leopard 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.6 . I have my iTunes library of tunes on an external FireWire Drive. I expect to purchase a Mac Pro soon. I expect to use Migration Assistant to pull files from my G5 over to the Mac Pro. Good so far.
    Everything I've read about having ones iTunes songs on an external drive always starts with the assumption that the iTunes songs are currently on ones internal drive. In my case, as you can see, that is not the case. Given that I already have my songs on an external drive, that I'll have a new computer with things in their default positions (unless Migration Asst. pulls over my iTunes preferences including iTunes songs location), how, then, can I make sure the new iTunes app on the new Mac Pro "sees" where my music already exists?
    Thanks for any help you might give. I'd like to be able to get iTunes working properly from day one on the new Mac Pro without iTunes problems.
    Wayne

    Thank you Airsculpture. What you laid out is the exact procedure I have used in the past. For some reason I thought switching to a new OS on a new computer might complicate things further. Glad to see that is not the case.
    I appreciate your help!

  • Can Leopard be installed from a Firewire Drive or Another Mac?

    I have a Mac Mini with a faulty Super Drive. It's not really a problem since I only use it as a network appliance and rarely install software via CD/DVD. But now I don't know know how to upgrade it to Leopard. And since its my File server, I can't use it with Time Machine.
    Is it possible to put the install on one of my Firewire Drives and install it from there?
    Any advice?

    Dear Cabak
    You may have options, but I am not sure as I have only two days with Leopard thus far, but....
    I am positive with Tiger it was possible to start the client computer up in Target Disk Mode and use the host computer to "upgrade", "archive and upgrade", or "clean install" the operating system.
    You will actually start the HOST computer up with the install disc AFTER you have the client computer in TDM. You simply choose the client computer hard drive and select the type of install you prefer to do.
    Remember to check the client computer for any offending files that will cause you to get caught in a blue screen freeze on startup. There are plenty of threads in the discussions about people having this problem. Read the following document if you are not aware of the situation.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306857
    The beautiful thing about this (if there were one) is that you can remove these files easily while in Target Disc Mode. These are the files you should get rid of before the upgrade process...
    /Library/Preference Panes/Application Enhancer.prefpane
    /Library/Frameworks/Application Enhancer.framework
    /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/Application Enhancer.bundle
    /Library/Preferences/com.unsanity.ape.plist
    I think you will be pleased with the outcome of your efforts.
