Firewire Drives creating desktop folders

Hi,
I have 2 external firewire drives (one Lacie 160GB and one Maxtor 300GB). Both are partitioned in 2. The 4 volume creates an empty desktop folder. I throw them on the trash but they always come back. Well its not a serious problem but it bothers me a lot. Anyone ? thx

Some more information: Well, inside the apparent empty desktop folders there are two invisible files: ".localized" and an empty folder "VISE temp folder".

  • How to create new folders on iCloud Drive from iOS or with document picker?

    Recently I wanted to share several files from my iWorks suite with my colleagues. I do not want them to edit these files, instead I made templates in Numbers for easier management of hours worked. Everyone could download their copy and keep a track of their hours themselves. The problem is, not everyone has an Apple product.
    Unfortunately, iOS does not support native browsing of iCloud Drive (except the document picker, which, to me, isn't helpful at all), the only way I know of - to create a new folder - is to open iCloud.com in Safari, request the desktop site and make a new folder from there.
    Is there another way of creating new folders, preferably an official app from Apple or from within an iWorks app or the document picker that I do not know of? Or is this actually a missing feature?
    Also, if Apple could make an app similar to Microsoft OneDrive, that would be great.

    Yes, there is a way. Here is the workaround. You can add notes folders directly with your iPad or iPhone.

  • Multiple Firewire Drives Do Not Load to Desktop

    Hi all,
    I have been using several Firewire External drives with Avid Express Pro editing system. Over the past months several firewire drives have broken down on me, increasingly loosing functionality over a period of several weeks. I have now damaged 3 external drives - two were Lacie 800+400 Pin Firewire Drives, and just recently my G-Technology Firewire Drive has also broken down.
    First the drives slow down on playback, then read/write time slow down. this happens when using Avid, Final Cut Pro, or when trying to simply copy files to the drive.
    Now, my current G Tech Firewire Drive will not even load to the desktop, and Disk Utilities can not find it. I have tried using both 400, 800 pin fW, and USB 2. Problem continues. I have reset ram, run tech tools cd - no problems are found.
    When I plug the Firewire Drive into my iBook laptop - it loads fine and runs normally! When I run Disk Utility from the iBook it says the Firewire drives
    need no repairs!
    I recently connected a friend's firewire drive that had never been used on my desktop and it loaded to my G5 just fine!
    What is happening? Is my G5 desktop corrupting the drives as it writes to them? It clearly has something to do with how my computer is interacting with these FW drives. Is it a firmware issue?
    I am under a pressing deadline, and can't let go of this desktop for service for over a week right now.
    Any suggestions much appreciated! I'm desperate to get this going!
    Thanks!

    Hi Tom,
    Thanks for the feedback. In all cases, I've been using FW drives on their own, not daisy changed. I've tried multiple FW cables as well to confirm that it is not the cables. These 3 different drives I've had problems with each have their own separate power supply, so I don't think that's the issue.
    I'll try running a copy of DiskWarriror.
    However, if it's an issue of directories on the drive, wouldn't the FW Drives not work on ALL computers? Why would it function fine on any computer other then my desktop?
    Any more thoughts would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Max

  • Firewire drive wouldn't show up on desktop; suddenly appeared. Why?

    Man, it's hard to fit everything I want to say in the subject line.
    I recently had a power supply failure on my G5 tower (one of the first 1.8 dual models). After replacing the power supply, everything appeared to be in working order, with no harm done (apart from my bank account). However, the external Firewire drive I use to backup the main drive would not appear on the desktop. Didn't matter if I restarted the whole machine or the drive, hooked it up to either port...the drive simply would not appear. When I turned the drive on, it was clear that it was still functioning in some fashion, as the read/write light on the front of the case was lit. The System Profiler did not see the drive either.
    That was the last day or two. This morning, I turned the machine on, and the drive still did not appear. I went through my usual morning websites, when I heard the tell-tale sound of Spotlight indexing a drive. I looked up at the corner and saw the drive icons (it has two partitions) on the desktop, and the Backup partition was being indexed. I checked them briefly (as I had to leave for work), and everything appeared to be as it was before the death of the power supply.
    So, my question is...why? What would cause the drive to suddenly appear this morning when it hadn't for the last two days? I did absolutely nothing different this morning when starting up the machine, yet today the drive was seen. I'm happy that it's working again, but extremely curious as to what might have caused this. Thoughts?

    Hi Brian Bernardini-
    I would presume that the drive is starting to fail. It would be wise to back it up as soon as possible?
    What model and make is the drive?
    Luck-

  • Cannot create vault on FireWire drive

    I have a FireWire drive with two partitions. One partition is a mirror running under SoftRAID. The other is an ordinary Mac partition. Aperture will not create a vault on the Mac partition, generating an error message saying that Aperture cannot create a vault on a networked drive. It says that it will only work on local drives or those connected by FireWire or USB. But this drive is connected by FireWire. Is this some sort of strange incompatibility with drives partitioned by SoftRAID?

    I have two valuts, both are on external FireWire drives (as is my library). Neither of these is attached to any kind of RAID array. My guess is that SoftRAID is causing your problem.
    Have you tried "unRAIDing" the drive to see if it will create then? or attaching a different disk and trying that?

  • Firewire drive not visible on desktop

    Firewire drive not visible on desktop
    System profiler knows it's there.
    Disk Utility indicates that it can be un-mounted (only a generic 'turned down page' for volume icon however), Disk has full Hard Drive logo...
    But I cannot access it on this machine, but plug it into another and it's ok...

    (only a generic 'turned down page' for volume icon however), Disk has full Hard Drive logo...
    You can see that appearance in Disk Utility if the volume permissions are such that the current user has "No Access."
    Since it can be accessed normally from another machine, connect it there and do a Get Info from Finder, looking at the Ownership and Permission Details at the bottom. Assuming this is not a startup disk, if any of the permissions is set to "No Access", change it to "Read and Write". Don't click "Apply to enclosed items" however.

  • Firewire Drives Drop Off Desktop

    When I launch FCPE4 and have my Canon GL2 connected to the front firewire port on my Mac G5 (OSX 10.5.1), the two firewire drives I have connected via a powered hub to the rear firewire port drop off the desktop and I'm unable to communicate with the camera at all.
    Tried connecting the camera to my MacBook Pro (2.2ghz) laptop, and no problem. I also tried disconnecting the two firewire drives and the hub and connecting only the camera to the computer by the rear and front ports. Problem still is there.
    Any ideas? Also, on the laptop, when capturing video, the video stutters in the capture window.
    Thanks for any help out there.
    Best,
    Peter

    After some exhaustive research, I found an article where a known problem exists between the Canon GL2 and the firewire bus on the Mac G5 dual 2.0 and 2.5 ghz machines which prevents both the Canon GL2 and GL1 cameras from communicating with the Mac. Turns out the only solution is to install a PCI-X (in my case) firewire card which gives the camera an independent bus to communicate via.
    Problem now if FINDING a PCI-X (not PCI) firewire card for the computer!! Argh.
    Hope this helps others as well.
    Best,
    Peter

  • Cannot create new folders on desktop. Cannot drag new items onto desktop. Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal. Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas. Thank you.

    I can no longer create new folders on my desktop. The option to do that is now light gray on the drop down menu and can't be selected.
    I cannot drag new items onto desktop any longer either.
    The Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal.
    Folders and items on Desktop open and work normally.
    Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas.
    Thank you.

    Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
    Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or rebooting. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
    Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
    If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
    If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”). Quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.
    If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
    Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

  • Bridge creates unwanted folders on my desktop.

    I recently upgraded to OSX Lion.
    Ever since then each time I open Bridge (CS5) it creates 4 folders on my desktop.
    'data', 256, 1024, and 'full'.
    Can anyone tell me where to stop this from occuring. Just can't seem to locate anything in preferences.
    Help. It's driving me nuts.

    'data', 256, 1024, and 'full'.
    Those are the 4 folders that contain your preview and thumbnail cache. By default they should reside in the user library in your user account. The path would be: ~(user)/library/caches/Adobe/Bridge CS5/cache
    Also by default the user library in OSX7 is hidden, do a Google search on how to reveal the library.
    And check your Bridge Preferences Cache section. Inhere you can choose the location, you probably changed this to your Desktop? and this is not a good place for it. The cache can grow to huge proportions according to the amount of files, file size and 100% view you use.

  • External Firewire drive does not mount on desktop now.

    Greetings everyone.
    G5 dual, 4.6GB ram, OSX 10.4.10, external firewire drive, formerly worked fine, now is invisible.
    Not the drive. New purchase, worked fine until a restart. Not the cable. Power is getting from the G5 to the firewire drive. Not the port. I also have a firewire card instlaled so I have three ports to connect it to (and two on the FW drive). No combination works. Not the computer, the FW drive also fails to appear on an iBook. Not the OS. I did a clean install to make sure.
    I'm not a newbie. I know what I'm doing. Until now! DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius and Apple's Disk Utility cannot see the drive.
    The FW drive is a Powerbook internal HD inserted into a case, purchased seperately.
    At my wits' end. Can anyone help please.

    I am suddenly having this EXACT problem. I have two Firelite firewire drives (one 60G and one 80G) that are suddenly refusing to mount on my older dual 1.25GHz G4 tower. They are also suddenly refusing to mount on my non-intel iMac. They will both mount painlessly on my new Intel MacBook Pro, but that's not much use, since the point of the firewire drives is to transfer files between these computers. I'm updating all of them to 10.4.10 to see if that's the issue...

  • Cannot access drives from desktop

    I recently noticed that neither my internal drive or my external LaCie FireWire drive are accessible from my desktop. Double-clicking on either drive icon will not open a window. Folders on the desktop will open. I can access both drives from within an application "open." I have run maintenance and optimization in Techtool Pro but nothing has changed.
    PowerMac G4 Mirror Doors   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   LaCie FireWire Drive

    When you click once on the drives and select Get Info from the File menu, are you given the info on the drive contents? It is a long shot, but if those are just aliases to the drives and they aren't mounted, that might explain why they won't open.

  • Applescript for creating job folders

    having trouble with an applescript. I'm trying to create an applescript that will create a job folder for me with job number and job name in which I can include folders and subfolders.
    I found this script by searching google and it's pretty much what I need (thank you to who ever might have created it). I altered the folder names to what I need, and it seems to work for the most part but throws an error at the end that says : Finder got an error: Can't make "drive:path" into type item
    however it still makes everything i need. I would just like to get rid of the error.
    the script editor highlights the line of text that's having issues for me, but since i barely knew what I was doing in the first place I don't know how or what to change.
    if someone could help me that would be great. here is the code.
    set thepath to {"drive:path"}
    set JobName to text returned of (display dialog "Please enter Job Name:" default answer "Job Name")
    set incomingDate to (current date)
    set numYear to year of incomingDate as number
    set textYear to text -2 through -1 of (numYear as string)
    set JobNum to text returned of (display dialog "Please enter Job Number:" default answer {textYear & "xxx"})
    set JobNumName to JobNum & "_" & JobName
    set newsublist to {{"Builds", {"versions"}}, {"Links"}, {"Fonts"}, {"Proofs"}}
    tell application "Finder"
    set baseFolder to make new folder with properties {name:JobNumName}
    repeat with i from 1 to count newsublist
    try
    set {tier2, t2Subs} to {item 1, item 2's items} of item i of newsublist
    set tier2Folder to make new folder at baseFolder with properties {name:(tier2)}
    repeat with tier3 in t2Subs
    make new folder at tier2Folder with properties {name:(tier3)}
    end repeat
    on error
    make new folder at baseFolder with properties {name:(item 1 of item i of newsublist)}
    end try
    end repeat
    activate
    open thepath
    end tell

    There are a few differences with Leopard that still get me from time to time. Tiger's AppleScript doesn't like path to desktop, so instead use the statement:
    set ThePath to (get path to desktop folder)
    The other thing I hadn't noticed before is if there is an error, the script just stops instead of throwing up a dialog. If you are doing something like using an illegal file name or trying to create a folder in a location that you don't have permissions, then unless the MakeFolderStructure statement is in a try statement it will fail silently. Adding an error display will at least tell you if there is an error, so a script that works in Tiger (as well as Leopard) is:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px; height: 340px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFDDFF;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    -- make a folder structure at the currently selected Finder item
    tell application "Finder" to try -- get the current selection
    set ThePath to the first item of (get selection)
    if the last character of (ThePath as text) is not ":" then -- a file
    set ThePath to the container of ThePath
    end if
    on error -- default to the desktop
    set ThePath to (get path to desktop folder)
    end try
    set JobName to text returned of (display dialog "Please enter Job Name:" default answer "Job Name")
    set textYear to text -2 through -1 of ((current date)'s year as text)
    set JobNum to text returned of (display dialog "Please enter Job Number:" default answer {textYear & "xxx"})
    set JobNumName to JobNum & "_" & JobName
    try
    MakeFolderStructure out of {JobNumName, {"Builds", {"versions"}, "Links", "Fonts", "Proofs"}} at ThePath
    on error ErrorMessage number ErrorNumber -- oops
    activate me
    display alert "Error " & ErrorNumber message ErrorMessage
    end try
    to MakeFolderStructure out of SomeItem at SomeFolder
    make the folder structure defined in SomeItem at SomeFolder
    SomeList defines the structure:
    nested list items create folders in the previous text item - {"A", {"B", {"C"}}} = /A/B/C
    empty text items will create untitled folders
    parameters - SomeItem [mixed]: the folder structure
    SomeFolder [alias]: the destination folder
    returns nothing
    set ParentFolder to SomeFolder
    if class of SomeItem is list then
    repeat with AnItem in SomeItem
    if class of AnItem is list then -- add subfolder(s)
    MakeFolderStructure out of AnItem at SomeFolder
    else -- add a new child folder at the current parent
    tell application "Finder" to make new folder at ParentFolder with properties {name:AnItem}
    set SomeFolder to the result as alias
    end if
    end repeat
    else -- add a new (potential) parent folder

  • How to secure firewire drive data for multi user mac ?

    I have a couple of external firewire hard drives attached to my mac which contain all my work files.
    My 6 yr son has started using my mac so I have set him up his own account and set up the parental controls etc.
    BUT - is there any way I can set things up so the firewire drives dont appear to him or so he cant delete anything ?
    It seems fairly straightforward to protect files files on the main hard drive but these firewire drives mount every time a user logs on and he seems to have full access to them.
    Thanks in advance if you can help.

    Log in under your account, and highlight the drive on the Desktop. Click cmd-i to Get Info. Make sure that, under Ownership and Permissions, you do not have "Ignore Ownership on this Drive" ticked. Now, again using Get Info, make sure that all top-level folders are owned by you, and that other users do not have access. (You might want to reduce the number of top-level folders to make this easier.)
    Now log in as your son and make sure you don't have access to those folders.

  • Blue screen of death when La Cie external firewire drive connected

    I tested a LaCie external firewire drive on my iMac and it worked fine. I packed it up well and posted it to a friend who gets the blue screen of death when the LaCie is connected to her iMac. She's not even trying to boot from it.
    My iMac is 9.1  and hers is 8.1.  We are both running Snow Leopard.  Was there some problem once upon a time with chipsets or am I mis-remembering?
    TIA

    Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
    Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
    When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help
