Firewire Drives not showing and no Target disk mode

Strange problem. My two g4 450's one dual and one single will not start in Target disk mode, will not recognize Firewire drives and yet WILL recognize my iSight camera. What's going on?
Have 6 different drives to choose from but none mount. They all work on my G5 & MDD Dual
Enio

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION:
One computer does not recognize the other, which was booted into Firewire Target Disk Mode (either by holding the T key on start up, or by selecting FTDM in system preferences as the start up mode).
My particular case: older MBP to newer MBP unibody. I have a cable that is firewire 400 with a firewire 800 tip on the other end (6-9 pin cable). This cable is needed, for instance, if you machine only has firewire 400 but your new machine only has firewire 800 (like the new Unibody MBP). Well, they sold me this 6-9 pin cable at the store, when they should have just given me a firewire 800 cable straight across, because both machines have FW 800. Anyway, I tried the 6-9 pin cable, where the old MBP was connected via its 400 port to the Unibody's 800 port.
No dice. Would not mount, nothing. Repeated restarts, checked the cable and it does work... called Apple tech support, nothing. Researched the web until finally I think I know what it is.
There is not enough power coming from the 400 port to power the 800 port. I tried this 400-800 with my new Mac Mini as well, and it does not work. It does, however, get picked up on the older MBP when using a straight FW 400 cable. I then came across an article saying that someone was told by Apple that the FW bus can, in some machines, not provide enough power for FWTD mode. The solution for 400-800 is to go 800-800, or 400-400 if you can. If these latter don't work (FWTD mode fails to mount the connected computer's hard drive), us a powered firewire hub and connect Computer A to it, then connecting the hub to Computer B.

  • 1 TB External WD Drive Not Showing Up In Finder/Disk Utility/Terminal

    Hey everyone,
First time posting here so forgive any mistakes. I recently purchased a Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, 15-inch, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 from Apple. Previously, I had the late 2007 Macbook Pro model until a friend spilled some water on it and corrupted the motherboard. Regardless, I was using a Western Digital 1 TB external hard-drive to keep all my documents and files backed up, manually, alongside the time machine feature built in. (This was not connected at the time of the spill, and was not thereafter, so rule out water damage) During the period between when the old one died, (earlier this year May-2013), I kept the drive safely in storage because I knew I would want to transfer my 100gb music librairy along with my photos and other files when I finally got the new one later that year (was waiting for the hardwell processors to come out for the MBP). Just recently after this purchase I tried to connect the drive to my new MacBook Pro but it was not showing up. I have scowered the online forums for trouble shooting tips and took all the steps to no avail. I have replaced the data-drive cable with a new one, connected it to the wall outlet in case it wasn't drawing enough power from the laptop, among a few other simple tricks, but still it would not show up in either Disk Utility or the terminal command to show all active drives, all that's there is the internal Macintosh HD one. It was a fairly quiet drive-however I do notice there is not much of a 'spin-up' noise or any sound of it begining to work when turned on or plugged in, so I'm worried there might be something wrong with the drive itself. Nonetheless, the power signal continues to flash but still no recognition from the computer that it's there, so I'm certain it's not reading it. I have tried on my other buddys Mac and it is the same situation, as well as my roommates PC (which I figured wouldnt anyway because of how its formatted, but it was worth a shot) I am not sure which avenue to take next as I have all my files and college work that I still need access to on the drive, and would really hate to have to format the drive or anything drastic as such. Possibly there is a part I can buy and replace myself to make it start up and spin again, but I am not sure what that part could be or if there is an easier solution out there.
I would greatly appreciate any information or help on this problem, thank you all for the time and advie.

Clicking from a hard drive is bad.  Does the external drive have an external power supply?  If it does I would use this supply.

  • Will not start up in Target Disk Mode

I recently purchased a MacBook with Leopard. I'm trying to use the Migration Assistant to transfer old stuff from my G4 867 with Tiger to my new MacBook. I have connected using a firewire cable and going through the MA software. It advised to restart the old computer holding down the t key. I have tried this numerous times, old computer starts to start up, then shuts down. I even attempted to change the settings in System Pref=>Start up Disk and starting in TDM, computer attempts to restart, then shuts down. Can't seem to get the old computer to start up in Target Disk Mode. Any suggestions?

I just tried starting it up with option down and it did come up with the System icon and the two arrow icons, then let me continue with start up as per normal by pressing Enter.
When I hold down the T key, or choose Terminal Disk Mode in the System Prefs: Startup Disk, it restarts, then shuts off after about 10 seconds.
I tried disconnecting the two CD drives (ribbon cables) just to see if they were interfering somehow - no go, same problem. Now System Profiler shows only a single ATA bus containing a single Hard Drive at Unit:0, and it still won't go into TDM.
The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda ST380021A, which has this for pin configurations:
    Seagate ST380021A jumper diagram
Originally it was in the Cable Select position, but now it is in the Master/Single drive position (pins 7 & 8).

  • G4 PM will not boot after using Target Disk mode connected Intel iMac.

    Hi,
We have some new Intel iMacs and have transferred some information from our previous G4 PM (one MDD and one Quicksilver) to the new iMacs. For some reason the G4's will now not boot up and kernal panic on the gray Apple boot screen. This has happened to all the G4's we have in our office. They are running OSX 10.2.8 and the iMacs are running OSX 10.4.4. We can still mount the drives from the G4's using FireWire Target Disk mode.
I have tried zapping the PRAM etc but they still wont boot. I have also tried running the OSX 10.2 Installer disks to try and reinstall OSX on the G4's but the installer cannot see the drives?
Anyone have any idea what is wrong. Never had this problem before using the FireWire transfer.
    Thanks,
    Nick.

I had an experience with a mini mac after booting in target disk mode while connected to a blue and White G3 via Firewire. After attempting a restart, all I got was a blinking ? which usually means the startup disk or system folder can not be found.
I fixed this problem by booting using the originall install CD and then using the startup disk menu to reselect the original system disk/system folder as the startup disk. On reboot. all was good. Only took a couple of minutes.....

  • External hard drive not showing in finder or disk utility

1TB WD external hard drive is not showing in finder sidebar, destop, or disk utility. I have checked and all the preferences are ticked. The disk itself is showing a light and making a whirring sound during start up after being plugged into the power.

Three different external drives, on 2 different MacBook Pros (different ages).  One drive with internal power, 2 through USB.  Also have a new Solid State External Drive and it does work.  The were all working before upgrade to Yosemite.
    Have tried multiple USB Cords

  • Firewire drives not showing up

I did the most current updates yesterday, firmware etc... Now my firewire drives will not show up. What do I need to do? I rebuilt permissions, ran Techtool Pro 6, Ran CleanMyMac and still has not changed. Running LIon

Well didn't get an answer here so I decided to connect yet another hard drive to MBP. it worked. the two drives I was trying to mount were the ones that I had connected during update of software and firmware. this tells me that it fried the firewire 800 ports on drives. The lesson for me is to unmount/dis-connect external drives during firmware updates.

  • External Drive not showing as available scratch disk

I just installed CC on my Yoga2 Pro.  (Windows 8.1) I have tried two different external drives, but neither shows up as an available scratch disk.  The drives do show up in Bridge as storage.  Any ideas out there?

  • External Firewire Drives not mounting but shown in Disk utlilty

Well the title says it all!
I can see my ibook in target mode on my new macbook in disk utlity but not in finder!
I want to copy over my documents folders (I have tried migration assistant but it can't see the mounted drive either!).
It works fine the other way (i.e viewing the macbook in target mode on the ibook)
    Details:
    Macbook 2.2GHz (new model) 10.5.1
    Help!

Is the Mount or Unmount button greyed out in DU when you highlight the Firewire icon? If you can click the Mount one, do so. If you can click the Unmount one, check the Prefs in the Finder menu to make sure that you are showing attached drives.

  • Firewire drive not showing up in winxp

i have really been having a tough time with all my stuff lately. i dont even want to turn on all my music gear thats still packed away.
this is strange, i am im win xp and i plug in my lacie fw400 250 gb porsche drive and cant see it and cant find it when i search for it. Yet when i switch off the power on the drive, windoze makes the familliar da dum noise. are there issues with some fw stuff in xp?

Firewire is readable in XP when it is formatted FAT32 and NTFS.
HFS+ is only readable in XP with the commercial software by Mediafour called Macdrive: http://www.mediafour.com/
FAT32 and NTFS is readable by both Mac OS X and Windows XP, but can't be used as a boot drive for Mac OS X, and may not properly install Mac OS X applications.
NTFS is only writable by Mac OS X with http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
Otherwise NTFS volumes appear as read-only on Mac OS X.

  • Target disk mode with external hard drive?

    Hi all,
I have a very annoying problem. I've just bought a new Mac Mini, previously I had an iBook G4 600 (about 6 years old). My Mac mini works perfectly, but...
    1) I don't want to copy everything over from the iBook with Migration Assistant, I'd rather pick and choose what to copy. Is buying a firewire cable and using Target Disk mode the only quick way to do this?
    2) I was intending to transfer files using my external HD. But the Mini doesn't recognise my poor old external drive. However, all my iTunes music is on the external HD. It seems by far the fastest way to get the music off (as long as I can't get the mini to recognise the HD)would be to boot the iBook in Target Disk mode then somehow be able to read from the external HD as well. Is this possible? If not, what on earth can I do??
    Thanks in advance,
    Suz

Okay after testing, I am ready to conceded that you are correct that you can daisy chain an external drive and a TDM Mac together and have them mount both drives.
However. unless Suz proves me wrong (Which is always a possibility), I do not think that it will fix her initial problem. Since all's TDM does is allow the computer to act as a Firewire device, so it and the external hard drive, are simply 2 FW devices on a serial bus. If the new Mac Can't mount the external drive from the old computer, I doubt it would mount it with the old computer connected to it. (Unless there is just some funky thing going on that having another firewire device on the bus corrects?)
Let's see if it shows up in System profiler, and if it shows up there how does Disk Utility see it?
Have you also tried resetting the NVRAM?
Also just to be on the safe side, do you have another Firewire device that you can connect, to let us know that the port on the new mac is actually working?

  • Can Target Disk Mode be run from an external hard drive?

    Hi
My hard drive crashed on me the other day (again) and the apple genius told me all I could do was recover my data and send it in (again)
    QUESTION:
Can target disk mode could be run using an external hard drive as opposed to another mac? If so, how?
I think corrupt files on my external hard drive might have crashed my ibook hard drive and I'm wondering if I should really try using the external to save all my info from my ibook. Am I completely clueless about computers or is this actually a possible problem?
    Thanks

    HI Andrea,
No, you are not completely clueless. If you follow John's sound advice using Target Disk Mode from another Mac, maybe you have a friend or relative who has one. Here's the information on how to use Target Disk Mode that I found in the Apple Help menu:
Transferring files between two computers using FireWire:
You can use FireWire to connect your computer to another Mac and have one of the computers appear as an external hard disk on the other computer. This is sometimes called Target Disk Mode.
    To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the first computer and leave the second computer on.
Connect the two computers using a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. (If both computers have higher-speed FireWire 800 ports in addition to the standard FireWire 400 ports, you can use a 9-pin to 9-pin cable with the FireWire 800 ports to transfer data at higher speeds.)
Open System Preferences, click the Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start up the first computer while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon for the first computer appears on the desktop on the second computer. Drag files to and from the disk to transfer them.
When you finish, eject the first computer's disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
Push the power button on the first computer to shut it down and disconnect the FireWire cable.
If the computer to which you connect your computer is running Mac OS 9, it must have FireWire version 2.3.3 or later installed. Use Apple System Profiler (located in /Applications/Utilities) to check the version of FireWire installed. If it has an older version, get an update at the Apple FireWire website at www.apple.com/firewire.
It's a very simple process but it can only be done between two Macs. You can only "target" another Mac, not an external drive.
It sounds like your iBook needs service. And if you think that your external drive caused the problem to start with, I wouldn't use it again if you can do the TDM instead to retrieve your important data.
Also, be careful with total free drive space. Never fall below 15% free space. Open Disk Utility from the Applications/Utilities folder. Then select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. Then look down towards the bottom of the window on the right. You'll see "Capacity" and "Availablity". It's a good idea to keep track of free space all the time. You need a minimum of 15% just to boot.
    Hope this helps...
    Carolyn

  • Targeted Disk mode only shows one of two hard disks...

Got a new computer to transfer old info to from my dual g4 1 gig mirrored. When i set in targeted disk mode only one hard drive shows up. I confirmed both are set to cable select and only the master is showing. If I swap the drives the master is the only one that will show up. Any ideas on how to get both showing up at the same time?

Only the Master drive can be used in Target Disk Mode. See

  • Firewire/target disk mode

ok so long story... bear with me...
i have 2 macs and 1 sorta died so i connected the 2 and transferred all the documents i wanted to keep onto the good one via firewire and it all worked perfectly with the target disk mode and the hard drive came up on the desktop and i could get into all my documents and save them. Then, once i erased and re-installed the system on the old one and i connected the 2 computers again and did target disk mode on the good one, the one i saved refused to recognize the other computer... i think it was some sort of incompatibility issue? i don't know but it's really frustrating and i tried it 3 times already and restarted both computers mulitple times so i just hope someone can help me please

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Well - If you haven't already, you could try FireWire TDM the other way round with the other Mac as the target. The TDM instructions and a list of suitable FireWire target Macs are here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
and some basic FW TDM checks here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75414
Please post again if none of it helps - perhaps giving more details of each Mac and OS X version, etc. Good Luck.

  • Is It Safe To Use Target Disk Mode Between My Intel iMac And A G4 eMac ?

I want to use DiskWarrior 4 to rebuild my Intel-iMac's directories but a suitable startup CD has not yet been produced.
So I intend to put DW on my old G4 eMac (OSX 10.4.10) and use Target Disk Mode between the two.
As they have different processors and OS will it be possible and more importantly will it be safe to do so?
    Ian.

I received the very latest CD revision from Alsoft for DiskWarrior, Rev. 42. This latest version is STILL not able to boot the newest MacBook Pros. I tried, and eventually my MacBook just restarts to its internal HDD.
So I tried to run DiskWarrior 4.1 on a PowerMac Dual G4 which I had the Macbook Pro connected via target disk mode. NOTE: Both Macs are running the latest Mac OS X 10.5.4.
About half way through the "rebuilding directory" process, the G4 had a kernel panic and the black screen came up telling me to force shutdown my Mac. I nearly soiled myself. Luckily, the freeze up happened before the vital stage when DiskWarrior is replacing the directory. So MacBook Pro luckily booted back up okay.
So, I'd say to play it safe and NOT try to run DiskWarrior 4.1 from an older pre-Intel Mac to rebuild an Intel Mac's directory via target disk mode.
Currently, I think my only option I have to rebuild my Macbook Pro's directory is to install Mac OS X on an external HDD, install DiskWarrior and run it from there.

  • Target Disk Mode - Multiple Drives

I bought a new mac and want to take the info off my old Power Mac G4 867 MDD. I started it up in target disk mode but i only see ones of the 3 drives.
How can I see all the drives in the machine
    Thanks

FireWire Target Disk Mode will only work with the master Ultra ATA drive. To access other drives, change the position of them in the computer or use File Sharing, with SharePoints if necessary.
