Firewire enclosure not recognized

i recently bought a generic FW enclosure. mac mini ignores it completely. its like it doesnt exist (no device connected).
the device seems to be working fine in USB mode, but i want to use it trough FW
any ideas what should i try?

Since USB is processor controlled and FW has it's own controller, it is not uncommon to find devices where one or other bus is fine and the other isn't.
In your case, it may be that the FW chipset in the external drive is faulty, or has failed in some way, or if you have no other FW devices to test it with, that the FW interface in your mini has failed.
In the event of the latter it may be all you need to do is reset the system. You don't say whether yours is an Intel mini or an earlier PPC one, however reset as follows, making sure you use the right procedure depending on which system you have:-
If an Intel mini, reset the SMC as follows:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, +making sure the power button is not being pressed+ at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If a PC mini, reset the PMU as follows:
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
-Wait 10 seconds.
-Plug in the power cord +while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button+ on the back of the computer.
-Let go of the power button.
-Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
If that does not help, and with the drive connected with a FW cable and powered up, open Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) and let us know if you see the external drive listed on the left.

  • External Firewire HD not recognized by MacPro

I have a Thunderbolt Display that works fine.  However - i just got a WD 2tb Firewire 800 external drive.  I plugged it into the Thunderbolt display and it is not recognized.  No matter what i do.  If i unplug it from back of display and plug directly into Laptop - it sees it fine.
Fairly new to Mac's so am i missing something?  A setting or something?? Thanks for any help.
FYI - laptop is MacBook Pro from 2011 running latest OS.

No, you're not missing anything... it should just work. I have four FW800 drives daisy-chained to my Thunderbolt Display - and they just work. I'm on a 15" late 2011 MBP running 10.8.2 as well.
Something's up - either with your Display, your TB connection or the drive. I suspect the Display or the drive. Is your Display still under warranty? Even if it's not, I would first try it out with a different FW drive (Western Digital is notorious for just not working with Macs) or, if that doesn't work, take the whole unit into your local Apple Store or AASP.

  • Firewire port not recognized after 10.7.5 update??

I updated yesterday to OS X Lion 10.7.5 and now my MacBook Pro says my firewire port is not recognized…any ideas??

Wow, no help at all. Thanks, Apple!! Another stellar performance. That's the last time I ever install an update as it comes up.

  • Firewire drives not recognized

suddenly all firewire drives plugged into the g5 are not recognized. what could be the problem?

    Hi edaylew-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
My guess is that you simply need to reset the FireWire bus as described here: What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device
If that doesn't do it then see if anything in this document helps: USB and FireWire Quick Assist

  • Firewire Scanner not recognized

I was very excited when I saw the 10.4.4 update come thru because it said it was going to fix USB/Firewire issues. But, alas, it did not. I have a brand new G5 Quad that had 10.4.3 installed and it will not recognize my Epson scanner when attached with Firewire cable. Profiler tries to list something, but it is not the correct name. Photoshop scan plug-in will not recognize it either. If I connect with USB, it works fine. But I bought the scanner so I could connect with Firewire. (much faster!) I've been in contact with Epson technical support. No successful advice there.
It's not the cable - cable works fine with other devices and I did try a good working cable as well. Did repair permissions and other suggestions from another thread about Firewire drives not connecting, but to no avail. Epson says there are no firmware updates for the scanner. And the 10.4.4 update did not work either. I can use the scanner thru USB but not Firewire and would really like to. Any other suggestions?
note: Scanner and Firewire cable work fine on my old computer, G4 1G dual using OS10.2.8 - so I figure it's a G5 or 10.4 thing

If the device was hooked up while you were updating your operating system, then it is possible that the firewire bus needs to be reset. See my FAQ here:

  • Time Machine on FireWire drive not recognized

Got an iMac with a FireWire drive set up as a TimeMachine volume.
In addition, I have a MBP, connected to the network via Wifi (Airport Extreme).
Under Snow Leopard, both Macs were able to do TimeMachine updates to the FireWire drive connected to the iMac.
Now, under Lion, the TimeMachine volume is still recognized and functional (i.e. successful backup) for the iMac, but not visible anymore for the MBP.
The MBP can't see the TimeMachine volume, let alone back up to it.
    What gives ?
Is this perhaps a network or access authorization issue ?
    Thanks.

Ok, so here some more information.
iMac (Lion) with connected FW HD, thus hosts the TimeMachine volumes, connected via Ethernet to AirportExtreme
MBP (Lion), connected via WLAN to AirportExtreme
    Connecting FROM iMac to MBP:
    Sidebar - Shared computers: OK
    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: OK
    Connecting FROM MBP to iMac:
Sidebar - Shared computers: Error "Connection failed"
    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: Error "There was a problem connecting to the server"
I'm really beginning to think my MBP Lion install is borked.

  • Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter not recognized

When I connect my firewire to my MacBook using my Thunderbolt adapter my computer does not recognize it. It is extremely frustrating, because I am trying to transfer video from my camcorder. Does anyone have any recommendations.

Be certain you have inserted the cable plug into the computer jack so that essentially ALL of the metal end has disappeared inside the computer jack.

  • MacBook Pro 1,1. OS X 10.6.8 Trying to connect an Edirol FA-101 via FireWire, Macbook not recognizing device.

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect an Edirol FA-101 to my MacBook Pro. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Other fireWire devices and drives work on the port, but the Edirol is not showing up in Audio MIDI setup or anywhere. I've tried both DC power and Bus power on the Edirol. Did the SMC reset, flashed the PRAM. Reset Permissions in safe mode. Still nothing. The lights on the device show that it is on and connected, but in system profiler I get "Warning: Unable to list firewire devices."
    Any ideas?
    Josh

Hate to say it, but it sounds like the device has gone kaputt.

  • Mac Mini firewire peripheral not recognized?

I recently purchased a used Mac Mini and am trying to connect an MBox 2 Pro Firewire audio interface. The M Box 2 Pro is powered and lights up but doesn't show up in the Mac Mini's audio In/Out. I'm using a 9 pin to 6 pin cable. I've been through a number of forums and have tried rebooting and reconnecting in different order, as well as reinstalling Pro Tools 8. USB audio interfaces do appear in the menu but not the firewire...Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My iMac will not recognize my iPod, printer, camera, or anything that is plugged into it. What could be the problem? Thank you so much for your help!!!

    Kristi,
Please tell us what iMac model you have. I think the problem you have on this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3021123#3021123
Is related to the one you have here. Here is how to identify iMacs:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724 - G5 & Intel Core Duo (look identical on the outside except when you About This Mac on the Apple menu).
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724 - G4 (Dome with flat panel on articulating arm)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58669 - G3 (CRT)
If indeed your Mac is not an Intel Core Duo, in the future find the correct iMac forum to post your questions once we resolve this problem. I understand how each of these iMacs work, but I may not be in this forum all the time.

  • External Enclosure Not Recognized

    Hi,
I replaced my Powerbook G4's internal IDE HDD with a larger one, and put the old one in a USB external enclosure. I cloned the old hard drive onto the new one so my computer would be the same, but with more hard drive space. *I want to use the old hard drive in the external enclosure as an external hard drive.* However, when I plug it in to my computer, no disk image shows up on my desktop. It does show up on other computers.
    My questions are:
    1. Should I use disk utility to reformat the old hard drive that is in the external enclosure?
    2. If so, can I do this from another computer?
Thanks so much for any help

Davidvuk: It isn't clear whether you're talking about just one of your external USB drives or both of them. Would you please clarify which it is? Also, please assure us that you have formatted the drives. You should be able to do so after connecting them to a desktop Mac, if you have one available to use. If either of the drives fails to appear in Disk Utility when connected to a desktop Mac, I suspect there's a bad drive, a bad cable, or a bad enclosure involved.
If neither drive shows up in Disk Utility or System Profiler on your Powerbook, and you're using diffferent cables for them, I wonder whether your Powerbook's USB ports are working. Do you have any other USB device(s) that work when connected to the ports on the PB? A flash drive or a USB card reader is an ideal testing device because it requires very little power from the bus.
If both drives work properly when connected to another Mac, and both USB ports on your Powerbook work with at least some other device(s) connected to them, there's a power problem in the PB or the drive enclosure(s). Assuming you're doing all this testing with the Powerbook connected to AC power, can you test using a different AC adapter?

  • Firewire port not recognized on new MacBook Pro

I've been using time machine to backup my computer to a LaCie external drive and noticed that it hasn't done it for over two weeks. I can hear the drive when it's connected but it doesn't show up on my desktop. I plugged it into my old macbook and it worked fine. I'm using a new adapter made for this model of macbook pro — a firewire 800.
I need to use this computer for work and am hoping there is an upgrade that might fix it. I can't afford the time it will take at a mac store to fix this. Any advice?
    thanks so much

dose the hard drive show up in system profiler or disk utility?
(apple menu, about this mac, more info button, USB from the left hand list.)

  • External firewire drive not recognized when re-attached after being ejected

I'm using a Seagate external drive for Time Machine backups. When I need to disconnect the drive from the Macbook's firewire port, I drag the drive icon to the trash/eject icon. When the drive icon disappears from the desktop, I unplug the cable. If I plug the drive in again, the drive responds by lighting up and spinning up, but the icon for the drive never appears on the desktop or in the Finder window. Time Machine doesn't run as scheduled because it doesn't know the drive is attached. If I briefly power down the drive before plugging in its cable, the Mac recognizes the drive and it can be used by Time Machine. Is there a different procedure for unmounting the drive that would eliminate the need to power it off before reconnecting?

Thanks for the reply. The drive is mounted properly when I follow your procedure, same as it was when I powered down the drive. Your procedure differs from what I described in that the drive is powered down before the cable is unplugged. Maybe that's the safest approach. But I was looking for a way to avoid powering down the external drive since that involves unplugging the power connector (i.e., there is no power switch). Any way to avoid the power down?
