Firewire & Ethernet problem

Hi all,
I'm fixing a 17" iMac G5 ALS with 512 mg running 10.4.9. The iMac don't recognize the firewire and ethernet ports. There's also a problem with the sleep function, it freeze the iMac and the beachball start forever. The iMac is slow to startup, 10-15 seconds slower than my PowerMac G4 733 mgz.
I reset the SMU with the button on the logic board, didn't make any change.
Does anybody have any suggestion on what to do????
Thanks

Welcome to Discussions -
try shutting down and unplugging and resetting the SMU that way, as detailed in the link, rather than using the internal button. Have you tried starting from the install disk, repairing permissions and repairing the drive? You can also run Hardware Test from the install disk and see what sort of state your drive is in.
Please post back,
Miriam

  • HELP!!! Mac G4 450mhz dual ethernet PROBLEMS!

Hello, my mac is having a serious problem with the internet. It won't connect, and even though i have a ethernet cable plugged in, it says i don't. Everything was working fine until i left for 2 days and and plugged it for that time. I need the internet in that mac as soon as possible.
    PLEASE HELP ME!

I too, am having the same problem... but mine isn't because of the possible software update, it just flat out doesn't work!
I too, have tried asking for help with the possibility of (hopefully) restoring the driver/extension... but after reformating the drive and reinstalling the software from 10.2, to 10.2.8 and it still failed to work, I ended up buying a Belkin Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card that has FAILED in every way!!!
The Belkin card will work as a one-time thing, and after restarting or disconnecting the Ethernet cable, it fails to function and fails to be "selectable" within the Ethernet configuration "Show:" options.
    ...so don't buy the Belkin...
I have yet to resolve my dead Ethernet problem, and it is... a problem!
I know this isn't contributing much of anything, but don't waist your time with the Belkin. I bought one, it acted in the way described above, and the Belkin Tech Support suggested I exchange it with another one, and so I did... and it too... is acting in the manner described above.
No resolve... no Ethernet... no on-line schtuff. not on that G4!!!

  • Macbook Pro ethernet problems

    Hi All:
First post here. I have a 15" first generation MBP, and I'm having some ethernet problems. When my ethernet works, it works fine. However, if i were to shut down the machine and disconnect the ethernet cable, I cannot reconnect to the ethernet. In Network Preferences, Ethernet is not available in the pulldown and it appears gray-ed out in the Network Port Configurations. Restarting the computer, unplugging or resetting the modem doesn't help. Also, the PC link light on the modem will not be lit (but is lit when working).
The computer will not connect to any ethernet network, no matter where I am.
I've noticed if I keep resetting both comuter an modem a couple dozen times over a few hours, the PC link button will light, and upon next startup the ethernet connection will be restored. What do you guys think the problem is? It seems abnormal to me.

Had a similar situation with mine back in January, 2.16 Intel.
After spending 3 nights with my Cable ISP as the connection would drop-off, ethernet light flicker green, amber etc.
Took it back to Apple dealer, connected to Dealers network same problem. Cause:::: Motherboard had to be replaced, possible soder loose on the MO. Got it back in 10 days, haven't had a problem ever since.
Suggest you take back yours to have Apple dealer try this out.

  • Firewire audio problems with OS X 10.5.6

    Hello,
I’m experiencing audio problems with Firewire 400 on my Macbook running Mac OSX 10.5.6.
I’ve got a 2.4Ghz IntelCore 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM and 59 GB available on the internal HD.
It’s hooked up to a brand new Mackie D.4 mixer with 2 Firewire outputs. The problems occur on both Firewire outputs.
I’ve installed automatically from the software update (which I will never do again) to 10.5.6. I never tried the D.4 with 10.5.5 so I can’t tell if the problems occur there also.
The main problem is that after a couple of minutes of recording the sound starts to break up and get really distorted. After a while the sound comes back again.
The second problem is that Soundtrack Pro or Audacity don’t get any audio input from the D.4, although audio input is clearly visible in System Preferences – Sound.
The only sound program that works with all 14 Firewire channels is Ableton, but also in Ableton the distortion occurs.
An example of the distortion can be checked here:
    http://media.kaalslag.com/firewire-distortion-problem-mackieD4+Macbook.mp3
I’ve roamed several forums and sites to solve the problem and I tried these solutions:
I updated again to 10.5.6. with the full combo download from the Apple site. Restarted. Problem still there.
I shut Airport off, because lots of sites mentioned problems with Airport conflicting with audio/firewire. Didn’t work.
I did the work around with shutting the Macbook off, disconnecting the D.4, restarting the Macbook, opening Audio/Midi Setup, connecting the D.4 again, toggling the format frequencies a couple of times. Again, no use.
Right now I’m using my “old” Macbook again to record from vinyl. This one is still running on OSX 10.4.11. No problems so far.
I’ve had the distortion problems occuring before with an USB interface. Hoped that the Mackie Firewire would solve the problem, but it seems now that there’s a serious audio Firewire problem which is still not solved in OSX 10.5.
Any help, tips and/or a work around would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You could try using another computer in Target Disk mode (as an "external HD"), or you can connect the firewire cable and disconnect all other network cables (turning off airport). Then on each computer go to the "Network" system preferences and select "Built-in Firewire" from the list of ports and choose "Manually" from the drop-down menu next to "Configure". Enter the following IP addresses and subnet masks, apply the changes.
    _Computer 1_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    _Computer 2_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
After those ip addresses are entered and you've clicked "Apply", ensure that for both computers you have file sharing enabled (done in the "Sharing" system preferences), and then check the Finder sidebar to see if the computers can see each other (their names should appear under "Shared" in the sidebar--if not, try restarting).
If the computers dont appear (even after restarting), using the "Connect To" option that's available in the Finder's "Go" menu. In there, to connect to another computer enter it's IP address as follows:
    afp://IP_ADDRESS
If you're on the computer with the ip address of 192.168.1.1, you would enter 192.168.1.2 as "IP_ADDRESS". The "afp" is the protocol (just like "http" for web), and stands for "Apple Filing Protocol"...Apple's file sharing protocol.

  • I need a USB/FireWire ethernet adapter

About 6 months ago my ethernet port was fried when a lightning bolt sent a surge through the wire. Since then i have been using my family's wireless network, but now that I am back in school and away from home, i don't have that luxury. So, i've been looking for a Mac compatible USB/FireWire ethernet adapter and have had no luck. If anyone knows where I can find one, let me know.

    Hi Kllru,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
The following link has info on compatible adapters as well as a driver for OS X.

  • Very strange ethernet problem with iMac G5

Thanks in advance for your help.
I am helping my boss dust the cobwebs out of our network infrastructure (I work for a relatively small company in Michigan). In doing so, I unplugged all the ethernet cables out of our Linksys 24-port 10/100 switch and blew the dust out of the unit using canned air. I did not spray any of the propellant from the canned air and get anything wet.
Once I finished cleaning the unit, I powered it up and began plugging cables back in. I decided to try to group all the workstation cables into the first few ports. There are only 7 workstations. The switch indicated that all 7 were connected at full duplex and activity LED was blinking on all 7. I plugged our file server, AirPort and uplink to internet into the last 3 ports, and all the unused cables into the remaining ports. All 24 ports have cables plugged in, but as I said there are only 7 workstations plus the 3 other devices I mentioned. The remaining dozen or so cables lead to unused wall jacks. All ports on the switch were filled before and after the cleaning.
Here's the problem. One of our workstations, an iMac G5, suddenly was not able to connect to the internet. I checked in the network settings to make sure IPv4 was configured correctly. This particular machine has a manually assigned IP of 192.168.1.16/255.255.255.0. Router and DNS are also manually set. It has to be manually assigned - a public IP forwards to it via NAT in our DSL modem/router.
I decided to termporarily change this to DHCP. Our DCHP server is on another machine running OS X Server 10.4.11. The DHCP server is configured to assign IPs from 192.168.1.101-200. However, when I set the iMac in question to get its IP adderess through DHCP, it is assigned an IP of 169.254.179.148 (or something close to that). Confused, I checked the DHCP log on the server and found no entry for the problematic iMac requesting an IP.
I then turned off TCP/IP for the ethernet port, set TCP/IP to DHCP for the AirPort, and renewed. I got IP of 192.168.1.107. So it works properly with AirPort. Disabled TCP/IP for AirPort, FireWire, Bluetooth, enabled using DHCP for ethernet, and renewed. Got 169.x.x.x again.
Also tried switching ports on 24-port switch (tried 4 different ports), running a 50' CAT5 cable to another ethernet port in same room. Moving machine into the room where the switch is located seems pointless as I've tried multiple ports and cables already. None of my attempts has fixed this problem.
    Please help!

So it works with AirPort but not over Ethernet?
Have you tried creating a new location in System Preferences Network pane, and setting Ethernet up from the default settings?
Make sure the iMac G5 is not set up to do +Internet Sharing+ (using the Ethernet port); look in System Preferences Sharing pane, and turn OFF +Internet Sharing+ if it is currently ON.
Is one of the other workstations a Mac? If so, you could use it to test the iMac G5's Ethernet port, by connecting it directly and using +File Sharing+ (I suppose you could do that even with a Windows PC).

  • Firewire networking problem?

Hi folks, anyone had any experience networking a Mini (PPC 1.42Ghz 512Mb RAM) to a WinXP machine via the firewire port?
Managed to connect the Mini with a (generic) WinXP laptop using the Network IP thing via firewire. My tech savvy cousin set it up for me.
Anyways... things work fine until I need to shutdown the computers. When I restart, I need to plug-unplug the firewire cable on the Mini to get things going again. No probs with the XP machine.
Sometimes I need to do the plug/unplug routine, sometimes I don't. What gives? Should I get a new cable perhaps? Or do I need some 3rd party software?
    -Charlie
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It turns out that a new ethernet PCI card solved the problem. I picked up this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833180026) at NewEgg for $8.00 and I didn't even need to find drivers for it.
Once I had installed it, I was able to transfer 60GB of data without any trouble. The same transfer crashed the G4 when I tried it again using the G4's built in ethernet port. I'm glad to find a cheap fix for the problem. Hope this helps.

  • Ethernet Problem with Multiple users on same Mac

Hi, sorry i advance for my english. I am writing from italy.
I have an imAc with 2 users profiles on it. one profile is administratoe, and the oter a standard user.
I also have a time capsule configured to connect to my network with the ethernet cable. the cable is plugged in the wan pot, the configuration is "bridged" and i use as a router a linksys wifi router.
well. suppsung that i am logging in with one of my users and access to time capsule wirelessly, it shows me the disk content.
i then swith to the other user without logging off the first one and then access time capsule where i see the same folfder and i can access it. so everything works fine.
in the case i connect my mac with ethernet (disabling airort) to my linksys router, ifuser 1mounts time capsule, user 2 can't access it if user 1 does not unmount.
    why so?
i need to switch from user 1 to user 2 without logging off, and i don't understand why it works wirless and not with ethernet..
    thak you

In fact, all my page beans are in REQUEST scope...
The only bean in Application scope is the standard applicationBean created by Creator itself.
We use one Bean in session scope which contains another class.
I will try to explain our common process:
    - when logging into the app, the session Bean stores user data (rights for using app,...);
    - when navigating in the app, the user can search data, modify them and create one (if he has the right to do it);
    - to define the screen, we use a lot the beforeRenderResponse();
    - when viewing a data, the user can choose to modify it, so depending on the action, the page is in "CONSULT" mode or "MODIFY" mode. In the second one, he can display new gridPanel (as a subform) to populate datatable.
The problem is obvious while using this grid: my grid can disappear if someone else has validated his form before me and if my page goes trough the beforeRender of my page.
It is not really clear. If needed, i can give access to our application to show the problem (and msn adress too to talk about it).
    Thank you

  • Recording to external hard drives - Firewire 800 problems

Ok so i did post a similar thread on this in the "mac mini" part of the website so im very sorry for double posting but I thought since this problems pertains mostly to recording and specifically recording on garageband, that I would try posting here as well. Heres my deal:
I am a musician working with garageband and I have always been recording to my internal drive until recently. I was unaware until I read some posts here from the good people like you guys, that that is not a good idea to record to your internal drive. So, I got an external firewire 800 drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DGZ05A) and this cable (http://www.amazon.com/2M-Firewire-800-9PIN-Cable/dp/B000XQILWK/ref=pdbxgy_e_imgb). When I received it, I first used disk utility and reformatted it for Mac OS Extended Journaled. Then I proceeded to move a couple sample libraries and my entire "Garageband" folder (with my saved songs in it) to the external. I instantly knew something was wrong. The files were taking forever to get written over. It took about 15 mins for a 5GB folder to be moved over. I was already discouraged. Anyway, I plugged in the USB cable that came with the external (the drive has hook ups for both USB 2 and firewire 400/800) and tried moving the same files and it was MUCH faster. The same 5GB file was moved over in a matter of minutes.
I then tried recording to the drive (using firewire again) and it would hardly even PLAY the song without stopping every couple seconds (too many effects error, and yes ALL the tracks were locked). Tried to record as well and i'd get even less time before garageband would stop the song with the same error. So I disconnected firewire and went USB. Thru USB the song didnt stop once, not on playback OR recording. Then I moved the songs back to my internal and played them (and recorded) with no problem either.
I ran a couple tests on the drive using AJA system test and came back with these results:
Basic test of read/write speed using firewire 800:
    write - 14/mb sec
    read - 21/mb sec
    then, using usb 2.0
    write - 18/mb sec
    read - 37/mb sec
both these connections seemed to be running slower then they should ..but at least the USB connection would actually let me play a song and record to it without stopping
I manually copied over a 2.04GB file and via firewire 800 connection it took 2 mins and 20 secs. Via the USB 2 connection it was 55 seconds! ..also, while i transfered the files i noticed that the USB transfer was nice and steady with tiny increments of the file being transferred. Firewire, however, was speedy then slow, speedy then slow. Very inconsistant transfer speed throughout the process. kind of choppy
So what gives? I cant figure out if I'm doing something wrong, or if my external HD is bad? Or the cable is bad? Or maybe the firewire port on my mac mini is bad (i've never used it before for anything other than this external drive). Or i'm thinking maybe my processor isnt strong/fast enough to record to the external firewire drive? Im working with a mac mini 120GB internal HD and the 2ghz intel core 2 duo with only 2GB ram (i know thats not ideal for recording and im planning to upgrade at some point, but i have been recording to the internal just fine with the RAM i have now and never had a problem until trying to record to the firewire drive). I was going to go out today and get a new cable and see if that was the cause of it. Anyway sorry for the book-length post! But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advance

Strictly my opinion, and more than happy to be educated with facts and convinced otherwise... but, there are no dangers.
Bottom line is this... does your specific computer setup encounter ANY problems during recording or editing with your chosen software and current workflow? If not, then there is nothing wrong. Simple as that. Further, if you are having problems, then its more than likely dealt with by upgrading RAM amount and internal HDD speed and size. If you have a slightly older machine that is pre FW800, you will find by bench marking your HDD's that an upgraded internal system HDD will significantly outperform any external HDD read/write spec's. Even with FW800, comparing apples with apples, your system HDD will more than likely have better spec's. Please however, do not take my word for this, but try it out for yourself. Make sure you have facts about your own system rather than believing my claims or anyone else's claims. I used Intech's Quickbench http://www.speedtools.com/QuickBench.html to get some facts about my machine.
There will be an argument made that you will be putting strain on your hard drive by recording to the system drive because it not only has to deal with this function but also with other functions related to your audio programs and OS. Apparently you may be working it on the 'hard' side and shorten its life span. Probably technically correct but practically speaking you will more than likely never even notice any such strain. If you are worried about a system HDD crash or death because you are working it too hard then the answer to this is a well planned back up regime. You should have one anyway, regardless of setup.

  • Firewire Audio Problems with Snow Leopard?

    Hi
Recently bought a brand new Mac mini. I hooked up my Tascam FW1804 after installing the SL specific driver (1.70). Problem seems to be that I cannot get the Tascam to appear in SL unless I unplug and plug back in the FW1804. Very strange...
Additionally performance is terrible and midi connection is very erratic.
    Anyone has similar problems?
    Cheers

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay in responding. It is AC powered.
As a new twist, it looks like firing up the system profiler helps detecting the interface. Feels like the firewire is completlely asleep when powering up and you'd need to peek it to start it up.
    Strange ...
    Cheers

  • MacBook Pro 13 (2011) Ethernet problems

Hi all! I bought my laptop 3 months ago. almost immediately there was a problem with the Ethernet. The essence is this: after 2-3 hours it stops working. That is, as if the cord is not plugged in. I upgraded my operation system to 10.7.2 but the problem remains.

    hi -zieg-
This is my recommendation for your consideration
Also have 3 mo. old MBP (17")
Had ,very briefly, same problem: reinstalled Lion... and problem vanished.
Please remember to do backup B4  any major system change. if you choose to do this: I have time capsule. This would be,of course, a solution albeit time consuming....
    Let 'er rip and ...
    cheers

  • Help with ethernet problems

    Can anyone help with this?
Have a black powerbook, snow leopard, safari. No problems at all with wireless/ethernet at home
When at work, usually just unplug ethernet from work PC and once plugged into mac, it automatically detects internet connection just like that
For some reason, tonight, when I try this have no connection (an exclamation mark over the airport icon) and when I go into network in sys pref, says "self assigned ip address"
If I switch to DHCP manually, can input ip address from PC and it works fine but whenever i try and switch to automatic, it wont work
Have spent ages looking through the internet to try and find answer - firewall is off, no recent changes to software/hardware, flushed ipfw, etc
    Any bright ideas?
    Thanks a lot

I am a bit confused by your post. Are you trying to connect to your network wirelessly using the AirPort card, or are you trying to use a wired connection via your Ethernet port?
What is the source of your Internet connection? DSL? Cable modem? Something else?
Are you connected to a router? What make and model?
    Best of luck.

  • Macbook ethernet problem

A few days ago my ethernet socket started misbehaving. After plugging in the cable, if I pushed the plug gently to the right of the socket it worked fine, but release the pressure and it stopped working. Looking at the Network preferences, it's clear - push to the right and a green light appears against Ethernet, release and the green light goes grey. Now it's stopped working completely.
So it seems like a hardware problem, or at least some physical problem with the socket. But I don't understand what could have caused it. It's been working fine for 4 months, I haven't dropped it and there's no physical damage. The socket looks fine, the pins are straight, the 4 metal bits in the socket are in place (2 at the top, 2 at the sides) and the cable locks in place OK. I've tried different cables and connecting to different sockets as well. The only thing I've been doing is plugging and unplugging the cable every day.
Any suggestions, or do I have to take it to an Apple Store for repair?
    Thanks

I would suggest taking it in for repair. Hopefully you're still under warranty. The constant plugging and unplugging could have caused something to happen to the socket.
