Firewire External Keeps Crashing My Computer

I recently purchased a MyBook 1TB external firewire hard drive to expand my storage, so I thought it would be a good idea to install back-up software to back-up my essential info on my eMac. My 250 GB Maxtor firewire drive came with a copy of Retrospect Express. I'm familiar with Retrospect (use it at work) so I thought this would be a good idea. It wasn't! After installing & restarting I got a start-up warning & I gave it permission to try & fix-it (2nd mistake). Then after restarting again, I was told that 2 items in my Startup folder in my Library had security issues, so I trashed them. Then after trying to restart again, I would get the "gray curtain of death" forcing me to restart. At this point I wasn't even getting to my desktop, this would be during the restarting. After several attempts, I unhooked my externals and started up fine, no issues. I then added my new MyBook external, again no issues, everything's fine. It's only when I try to add the Maxtor drive via firewire that I crash.
I've tried just about everything I can think of. I can access the drive from firewire of my install disk, but not from my main start-up disk. I've tried daisy chaining it to my other external, no luck, still crashes, a different firewire cable, different firewire port, again still crashes. I've run Disk First Aid several times from both my start-up disk & install disk. I am however able to read the drive just fine via USB (so not all the data is lost, thankfully), but being thank I'm only working with USB 1.0, this isn't really an optimal solution. Something's clashing when I'm using the firewire, something after I installed the outdated Retrospect software (lesson learned). I've trashed everything I can find associated with it, but something's still causing problems.
Sorry if this is long-winded, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave Dobesh

Hi Dave, not long winded at all.
I think you'vve narrowed it down to the OS & Install.
Does the Retrospect Installer have an uninstaller?
Might try AppDelete...
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html
Even if you have to Install Retrospect again to be sure of finding it's files.
What Format is the External?
Also, WD MyBooks are not a good choice for PPC Macs...

Light room five keeps crashing my computer, uninstalled it downloaded a fresh copy it works fine. How do I get my pictures out of the old copy to the new one?

Apparently you have two catalogs now, one from each installation. If you did importing, tagging and editing during the first installation, that will all be in the first catalog. Find the first catalog - it is a file with the suffix .lrcat and the default place for LR to put it is usually your Pictures folder - and (with LR closed) double-click on it. LR will launch with catalog #1 active.

  • Panther Install to firewire disk keeps crashing

    Hi guys,
Ok, my powerbook has some sort of disk corruption and won't boot. What I need to do is install my copy of Panther onto an external drive, boot from that to give me a working computer, then I can attempt to fix/backup the corrupted drive.
I've tried to install to an iPod via firewire - the install crashes, hangs or just exits, generally at the "Processing base Installation 2 - writing files 22%" stage - it has certainly never got beyond that.
I've just received a firewire/usb drive and the same thing happens with that as well.
Any reason why the Panther install keeps crashing? It's just being booted from the master DVD.
    Disk utility doesn't help either.
(Note: I'm using a PCMCIA firewire card, as an external hardware device fried my firewire ports)
I've now tried to install panther about 80 times without success. The disk itself is fine. I don't have another Mac to use in firewire target mode.
Any help? I'm off to do some more research in the meantime...
    Many thanks,

Ok - the reason the OSX Installer was crashing all the time was my RAM - I replaced the machines original memory, and the installer does not crash.
I wish I'd done this much earlier, it could have saved me quite some hassle, but there you go...
Ok, as I was running out of patience, here is what I did. After I had cloned the internal drive to the HD, and created a second DMG image of the internal drive as an extra backup, I crossed my fingers and wiped the internal drive, and reinstalled OSX (yes, the installer still crashed, which was what let me to finally try with my old RAM, and it then worked).
Now I had a working computer, I set Diskwarrior to work on the cloned drive, hoping and praying that it would recover my files - it reported loads of errors, so whatever had happened to the drive was pretty major.
DW did recover pretty much everything, although a lot of the directory structure was garbled (alas no hope of cloning this back to the internal drive and have the computer exactly as it was before). But at least I can get to my important files. Yay!
Now I'm going through and reinstalling/updating and restoring everything, which is a time consuming process - but I'd rather that than lose everything.
    Lessons learnt:
    - If you experience random crashes and have replacement RAM, keep the old RAM and put it back in to see if that solves the issue.
    - The external FW drive I bought to help fix this will have a partion dedicated to a cloned backup drive, and probably a light system-only partition too. This will make troubleshooting and restoring fairly easy.
    - Good disk utilities are worth the money.
    - Remember to archive important stuff on a regular basis, not just when you can be bothered to fire up a blank DVD.
    - A clean system install may help me with one or two other symptoms my Mac was exhibiting (sleep sometimes shut computer down, bluetooth flaky)
    - Any software which uses more copy protection than the usual serial is a pain to reinstall (apart from dongled software, which is easy)
    - This computer is going to have a much cleaner system and more disk space available, as the crap is gone and only what I currently need will survive.
    - Do not throw your OSX install disks away. They might be the only thing standing between you and your files some day.
    - External firewire/usb drives are good.
    - I've learnt lots about single-user mode, disk utility, and mounting and checking drives during the process.
Thanks for your help C - at least we had a (kind of) happy ending in the end! Phew!

  • New Mac keeps crashing. Computer just turns off and restarts. Can happen in 10 minutes or a few hour

Computer keeps crashing. Took it back to authorized seller and they changed the ram, but continues to crash. Will be in the middle of any program and screen will black out,go back to restart. Very confusing as it's top of the line iMac.
This all started when my phone carrier remotely accessed my computer though to fix an unrelated problem.
    Could this be the glitch?

Computer and OS info, please. Then, provide a crash report.

  • Flash 11.3 keeps crashing my computer.

    Windows XP home edition
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
    I have disabled hardware acceleration.
I've run two different antivirus scans, and three malware scans.
I cannot figure out why it's crashing.  I don't get the bsod, it just stops.  The screen stays the same, but I can't move the cursor, and have to power down.  This has actually happened the last three times flash player has forced me to upgrade, but turning off the hardware acceleration fixed it before.  It didn't work this time.  I have the latest drivers for my video card, at this point, there is nothing left for me to do.  The problem is that I don't have any clue what the last version of flash player that worked is, and it's incredibly annoying that I have to go through this every time you want to do an update.  It'd be nice if you gave me an option to ignore the damn updates that are going to crash my computer if installed.  Or, you could NOT CRASH MY COMPUTER WITH YOUR UPDATES.

Please see this FAQ that describes what information we'll need along with instructions for reporting the crash to us.  I understand your frustration, but we need to get very specific and detailed to figure out what's crashing your system.
How do I report a Flash Player crash to Adobe?

  • Flash Player keeps crashing my computer

I got an auto update of Flash Player 10.3.183.7. Right after this update when i went to a site running flash the page would freeze, and i couldn't do anything
because everything was froze. After about 30 seconds i get the blue screen it says flash player plugin container is the cause. It dose this on any page running flash. I uninstalled and reinstalled, that did not help at all. I turned the hardware accelerator to none, like i read in adobe forum, this didn't help ether.
I tried to go back to the version before this, but when i go to a site with flash, it says i need the most current version of flash player. a few times it froze i was able to open the task manager and the flash player plug-in container was maxing out the CPU, and the memory.
I have a AMD Phenom II X4 quad core 3.5 GHz, and 8GB memory, windows XP SP3, Nivida GeForce 260GTX OC HD video card. I'm using Firefox 6.0.1
This also happens when i use Internet Explorer 8.0.6 I first thought this was a browser problem i was using Firefox 3.6.18
I currently have Flash Player uninstalled. So How do I stop this from crashing my computer?

I'm also having problems with Flash Player version 10.3.183.7, in the past day or so. Also using Firefox 6.0.2, though I've since tried this with the Standalone Player, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. I'm using Windows XP 32-bit. I also tried downloading archived flash player versions (9 and 10.1) and they had similar problems.
Most flash applications will cause the browser to lock up, sometimes temporarily and sometimes permanenely (having to close it through the Windows Task Manager). In the case where the browser does not permanently lock up, the flash application stops playing within the first 2-3 frames.

  • Vue 6 Easel keeps crashing my computer

I just got ilife three or four days ago. Now, Vue 6 keeps crashing the display. I can't exit out of it, but other applications keep running. Itunes kept playing music, but I couldn't quit that either. Is it because Vue 6 easel isn't working right, or not compatible with 10.6.4, or what?

You do realize iLife comes with every Mac, correct?

  • Adobe Flash Player keep crashing my computer

Starting several months ago, watching any videos which utilized Adobe Flash started to crash my computer fairly often.  I would say my computer has about a 50% chance of crashing every time I watch a video.  Sometimes I can watch 5 videos in a row and other times the video will barely start and my computer will crash.  I have tried updating my graphics card driver and making sure I have the latest version of flash player.  Does anyone know what might be happening?
    System Specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU(Q9550)
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTS 250
    RAM: 4GB DDR2
    Motherboard: GA-EP45-UD3P

Sorry this is happening on your system.  What OS and browser are you using?  A couple of things to try, first disable hardware acceleration to see if that makes an impact.
If it does, then we're probably dealing with a driver issue.  Post back with your system's dxdiag report and we'll take a look.  If it doesn't help, the next step would be to try going back to a previous version of the Player to figure out when this started occurring.
How do I revert to a previous version of Flash Player?

  • IE keeps crashing my computer and goes to the blue

Whenever I launch IE after 5-10 sec my computer crashes and goes to the blue screen. which does a memory dump. I then need to turn the computer off and restart it to get it to run. This will keep happening after the system does a repair. I'm not sure what
    to do??? HELP

Please upload the dump file mentioned in the post here.
Start the Windows Explorer and go to the folder, default location is %SystemRoot%\Minidump. next, copy the dmp files to your desktop, zip all dmp into a zip file and upload the zip file to your public Skydrive folder and post a link here.

  • Lion keep crashing my computer 3 or 4 times a day

Since i download the lion system to my computer it keeps freezing all the time.

Have the same problem. Whenever I leave my computer for some time (say to have lunch) and come back to it, I initially find that the browser I happen to have been using (Chrome of Firefox) does not respond. I find I can access other programs that happen to be open but then they become unresponsive. Eventually the whole computer becomes unresponsive and I have to force quit my MacBook Pro (latest version with 8mb memory).

  • Itunes keeps crashing my computer

Every time I try to transfer music into itunes my computer crashes. It has already ruined one hard drive and is still happening with a brand new hard drive

are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Premiere Pro CC keeps crashing my computer

I've been having troubles with my Premiere Pro CC ever since I installed it. It loads fine and I can input media fine, however, randomly it will cause my computer to suddenly reset itself. I've noticed it occurs more frequently while trying to add titles to the sequence. It also will crash if I upload a session that would be emailed to me from a friend, cause they have the trial version and missing some exporting options I need to use, and my computer will reset about a minute into the export. I've tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling it and no luck. Is there a hardware issue I'm experiencing or something wrong in the software. Any help is appreciated.
    Windows 7 64-bit (SP1)
    AMD FX(tm)-8120 Eight-Core Processor 3.10 GHz
    8GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
    1TB Hard drive

    Hi Robert Hipp,
Please try to update your display drivers and then check.
Also check in a different user account with Admin rights.
    Thanks

  • Aperture keeps crashing while using the adjustments

It keeps crashing my computer causing kermel panic shut downs, black screen, sometime the computer screen just shuts off. It only happens when I'm using aperture in the adjustments. sometime its a brush tool and sometimes it's just using vignette tool. seem to crash during retouch a lot.
I'm editing Raw images and seem to do it with the raw images. Don't recall any trouble with jpgs. I've tested the hardware and all is ok. repaired the disk and permission an was ok, even deleted plist like some recommendation I found online. but still crashing. i have 16BG of ram which should be more than enough. lots of space on the HD. can't seem to figure it out. please help!!
