Firewire for macbook

Hi
I have the white macbook and need to get video footage off a DV tape.
Is there anyway I can do this as there is no firewire port on my mac
Thanks
Jack

If it is a recent MacBook with Thunderbolt, you can attach Apple's Thunderbolt Display and attach Firewire that way.  Older MacBooks with just mini-DisplayPort and/or mini-DVI unfortunately can't have Firewire added. Here's a tip I wrote which is soon going to be added hopefully to the tip portion of the MacBook forum:

  • Firewire for MacBook Pro

I have a iMac 6.1 purchased in March 2007. Its a 2.16 Intel Core Duo. I have just bought a MacBook Pro. Which firewire is the one i need to transfer my files???
Have tried with an ethernet cable and its taking >24hrs!
    Thanks
    Mark

Firewire 800 to Firewire 800 if the old one is the 24" or firewire 400 to Firewire 800 if the smaller 20" screen.
Restart the old machine in target mode by holding the t-key until the target mode screen appears, then link the 2 computers with the firewire cable and the old machine will behave as an external drive.

  • Firewire to usb adapter for macbook air

    Hello,
Just purchased the latest version Macbook Air.  I'd like to transfer video from a Sony video camera w/mini DV tape, into iMovie '11 on the laptop.  Trouble is, I can't use my existing firewire cable as before on the iMac desktop.  There are prior discussions on the forum about this but none current.  Have there been any new developments in the firewire adapter arena for Macbook Air?  Thx.

Sonnet Technologies is supposed to introduce a Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter called the Sonnet Allegro later this month. http://www.sonnettech.com
"The Allegro™ FW800 Thunderbolt™ Adapter enables users to plug in a FireWire® 800 device, including a bus-powered drive, to any computer with a Thunderbolt port."

  • USB to Firewire adapter for MacBook Air?

I would like to switch to a MacBook Air, but I still need to use my video camera via firewire. I found out that there is no direct way to connect firewire to MacBook Air, isn't it?
Then I have found PCMCIA cards supporting firewire connections. The remain question now is: Does a PCMCIA drive with USB connector exist where I can plug in the PCMCIA firewire card? It seems that such a kind of combination works for UMTS PCMCIA cards. But does it work also for firewire cards? Which adapter could work?
Or is there any other way to get my camera working at MacBook Air?

    Hi Michael,
I am facing the same difficulty.. would like to plug my camcorder on my mac book air..
but without firewire... do not know how to proceed.. which is very annoying..
I ll get back to you if I come across some useful info

  • Alternative to the firewire cable for macbooks

I was wondering if there was some sort of alternative to firewire for uploading film footage? My macbook does not have a port to plug in firewire. I know that USB can be used instead but that this can lower the quality. Is there another way that you can upload footage without lowering the quality but using a usb cable?

    I was quoted...? that's a first.
Anyway, the transfer protocol isn't what determines video quality, it's the camera. The new video cameras that use USB are not true DV as they use a compression algorithm. Comparing compressed video to DV is much like comparing a CD quality audio file (44.1kHz 16-bit) to it's mp3 counterpart. Acceptable? For most consumers the answer is probably yes. However, the video degrades quickly if you have to change file formats or compress it more for a smaller file size. The compressed format is why the new camers can use SD type memory cards instead of digital tape.
It's probably true that USB2.0 couldn't keep up with the amount of data a DV stream
When transferring many small files, USB 2.0 is as fast if not faster than Firewire 400, when transferring several files over 30MB(approx) Firewire 400 is faster. Files do not have to be broken up into packets and reassembled on the other end.

  • Video editing for macbook

Hi! I'm a would be mac newbie but before i switch i would like to know if i'm interested in using my would be macbook for video editing what are the things i have to consider. I'd really appreciate the input. moreover, what kind/brand of capture card is available and compatible for macbook?

the video card doesn't have that much to do with editing video, so ignore that.
i have, and use, final cut pro on my CD macbook - with 2 gigs of ram - and it works fine for simple edits. the fans only ramp up when i am using compressor to create qt files.
i am actually quite happy with the performance. (editing DV footage)
here is a video i just finished on my macbook:
    http://www.bobscottnyc.com/seagirt.mov
that said, if i have a big edit i would do it from my desktop, but for smaller projects, the macbook handles DV editing just fine.
you absolutely need an external drive. this is rule one when it comes to editing video. you keep your editing app on your primary drive, and capture your footage to a secondary drive (weather it be another internal or a external) I capture all of my footage to my OWC Mercury Elite Aluminum Pro (250 gig)

The Mac side is dictated by the connection:  can be firewire 400, 800 or thunderbolt, whatever the Mac uses.
    The choices are:
4-6 pin cable for a Mac enabled firewire 400.
4-9 pin cable for a Mac using firewire 800
And 4-9 pin cable using a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter for thunderbolt only Mac.
You may find capturing live footage to be a problem unless you use an A/D Converter or camera using free run timecode.

Well, Ive got 6 Macs,  Ive got the firewire,  I just wanted to jack into the 'older' 2013 Macbook Pro via firewire.
Capture HOW,  what APP,   auto recognition?
Any easy lazy wares you recommend for quick looks and capture?
i dont wanna capture LIVE , just recorded being played off the tape thru Firewire to the macbook.
Users who post here usually have FCP X on their system.
However, QuickTime 7 or X will capture as does the Image Capture app.
Any of the Final Cut apps work as does iMovie.

  • The normal value of battery capacity for macbook pro

    Hi there,
I noticed my battery full charge capacity value is way below the technical specification from Apple.
    For macbook pro 15" early 2011 version a 77.5W battery is built-in.
However, so far after 4 cycle, my full charge capacity is 6913mAh.
It seems that I missed something. Though I didn't really notice the initial value when it's brandnew.
Statistically what's the average value of the new battery will be ? around 75W or 7500mAh? Any idea?

  • I bought the wrong version as I need it for macbook pro but somehow bought windows...help

I guess I will have to wait until normal office hours.  I have no idea why it bought the window version as I did not realize that is what was selected.  I hope I can get it exchanged for the photoshop elements 13 for macbook pro retina display.     Anyone know if this is an easy switch and one they will do?

When buying HD versions of shows, only the HD copy will automatically download now (probably due to requests from people who don't need/want the SD version and complained about it being forced on them). The SD copy can be downloaded from your purchases area in iTunes, though. On the main iTunes Store page, go to Purchases under the Quick Links and then select TV shows. Click the "Not On This Computer" button. Uncheck the "Download HD when available" box and you should then see the SD copies of the shows and be able to download them.
    Regards.

  • Why SLFM is not enabled for Macbook 13" Aluminum late 2008 model?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know why SLFM is not enabled for Macbook 13" Aluminum late 2008 model?
I just found this out after I installed bootcamp and Windows 7 on my Macbook 13" with P8600 2.4Ghz CPU 2GB RAM and 250G HDD after more than a year of using it.
After I installed the CPU monitoring widget on Windows 7 and CPUZ, I noticed that the lowest Freq that my Macbook operates even with <5% CPU load is only 1.5Ghz and VID @1.0V.
I installed Coolbook on OSX to confirm what I saw on Windows. I was surprised that SLFM is not visible in Coolbook which is the same result I got from Windows 7 CPU monitoring widget and CPUZ.
I checked with our local Mac support and they got the same results for all of Macbook 13" Aluminums late 2008 model. SLFM is not visible on Coolbook which means, it is not enabled.
I tried to install Coolbook on my wife's Macbook Pro 13" 2010, which has the same spec, P8600 2.4Ghz CPU and 250G HDD. The only difference is the memory which is 4GB RAM. There, SLFM is enabled and works just fine, running at 798Mhz @0.875V.
Can anyone please help confirm if this is really the case for Macbook 13" late 2008 model?
Because I checked the Intel P8600 Datasheet and SLFM should always be enabled. Otherwise, it will affect battery life as well as long term reliability of the CPU.
I would appreciate if the Macbook and Macbook Pro owners in this forum can help confirm using Coolbook the status of SLFM in your own Macbooks. You may use any other tool in checking the SLFM and share it with us if you believe it is more reliable and better than Coolbook. Thanks.

  • How can I know if my new internal hd for macbook pro is compatible?

I have been trying to upgrade my internal HD for macbook pro early 2008 2.4 and have been having a hard time getting it to boot.  Problems with both WD and Seagate.  I am wondering if the problem is with Mavericks.  I got a good back up from Time Machine to load on the hybrid drive.  Then when I try to restart it shows the apply symbol with no chime and then a black screen comes over the blue screen with some code (strange problem I have never seen) I can see that all the data is on the drive.  I was able to partitian in disk utility.  Anything ringing a bell.  I have done several switches like this and this is the first time I have had so much trouble.  I reinstalled my old drive just to make sure there was not another hardward issue and everything is fine there.  In fact I have a new logic board freshly installed by mac.

Your machine has a SATA 2 interface and I'm sure the new drives are SATA 3. They should still step down and work though. It's possible your SATA cable is marginal and the newer drive is trying to demand more out of it than the old one did. A good test would be to put the new drive in an external enclosure and see if it works ok from there. If so, it's probably the cable.

How did you install Mavericks on the new drive?
