Firewire glitch

Hi;
After a power surge, I've lost firewire capabilities. The power is present; I can charge a device, but I cannot communicate or connect with any peripherals.

Billy Stidham,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
1. shut down
2. remove all Firewire peripherals from the eMac
3. remove the power cord from the side of the eMac (this removes the trickle current that modern electroincs draw even when nominally off)
4. wait at least 30 minutes
5. reattach the power cord
6. restart
7. open Applications> Utilities> System Profiler and check that the Firewire tab shows the bus as recognized
8. reattach your Firewire periherals one at a time, refreshing System profiler after each device. (If one particular device doesn't appear while the bus does, that device and/or its Firewire cable may be damaged.)
What kind of power line protection do you have? Cheap MOSFET-based surge protectors are essentially one-shot devices, with a nasty design that allows the 'protected' ststus LED to remain lit long after effective protection has been lost. While a good-quality multi-stage surge protector provides a safeguard against a power surge (the lab where I work is quite fond of Tripp Lite Isobar suge protectors), those provide no protection against power brownouts and outages. An Uninterruptable Surge Protector (UPS) from a reputable vendor such as APC is highly recommended. In the area I live, local computer and office supply stores often use the low-end 350mA APC model as a loss-leader to pull people into the store, with a net price of US$30 or less. While higher battery capacity is always desireable, and higher-end models include integrated cable and/or Ethernet protection as well as phone line, even a low-end UPS allows the computer to ride out momentary power outages. Connect the UPS to the Mac with a USB cable, and you can use Energy Saver to program it to shut down gracefully in case of longer outages.

  • Flickering video when daisy chaining firewire devices - HELP!

I have a 12" Powerbook with a single firewire 400 port, to which I have attached 2 daisy chained external hard drives. I have no problem capuring video off of my camcorder when I daisy chain it onto the end, but when the firewire is sending video the other way, as in the case of "printing" to tape, or using a television during editing, the audio clips and the video flickers substantially.
I've observed that connecting the camera directly to the computer eliminates this problem. Of course, it's a bit awkward, since I also eliminate my scratch disks (the external drives)! I've tried a firewire hub as well, and it seems that either the extra device or the doubled length of cable is interfering with the signal in such a way as to cause the flickering.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
In any case, I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Pro. Assuming I run into the same problem, I was thinking about adding firewire buses with the Express Card slot. Has anyone done this, or have recommendations for firewire cards that reliably work with MBPs?

When you say 'flickering' what do you mean?
If the playback is stuttering, meaning the data rate is not being sustained, then it is a Firewire glitch. If the video is strobing or rolling then it a video issue with the timeline or the capture settings or something else.
We daisy chained Firewire back in the day on the first edition Powerbook (400Mhz with 10GB internal) and had no issues, that was 4-5 years ago, so your PB12 should be fine with this.

  • Fix found: Broadcom drivers, Firewire audio and audio glitches

    Hi,
I've been working with MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) trying to get my 828mk3 firewire audio device to work properly under Vista 64-bit in Boot camp (note I had same problems with 32-bit version).
The problem was that I would get audio glitches in the form of beeps from my audio device every 30s-1:30s. Each glitch would last about 1s (@10000Hz). After many tests, I discovered when I disabled the Broadcom driver (latest MacBookPro5,1 distributed version), the problem went away.
Does anyone know why a Wifi adapter could affect a Firewire 400 device? Note I had the same problem with my old MacBook3,1.. so the problem is not related to the new MBP.
Anyways, I hope someone fixes the Broadcom driver; never-the-less, if you have this problem, this is your solution
    Thank you,
    Michael

No sound with Vista Ultimate on iMac.
I downloaded from this site and fixed it.

  • Noise glitch with firewire cable

I noticed on one of my projects with FCP that an noise glitch occured with firewire connected for video monitoring, but the noise glitch disappears when the firewire cable is not used and computer audio is used instead. The short split second noise is not on the audio track, but is part of the video track and can be eliminated by turning off the video track. My take on this is that the firewire cable is transmitting a noise glitch when it senses a video irregularity? Anybody else noticing this and is there a fix? This is a problem when recording to tape.

Yep. I've had that happen. I do some editing for a production house that doesn't like to ship the camera masters, so they make dubs to send. Occasionally, when I get a tape that's been used a few times, I get the little glitches. It's like there's 'almost' a dropout in the tape, but not strong enough to see it. And the signal seems like it's strong enough to play by the computer, but when you send it through firewire, it's just too much to stay locked.
I've tried recapturing, but the problem still happens in the exact same spot.
I just have them make new dubs and throw away the tapes and it takes care of the problem. It's not your cable or your system, it's the tape.

  • Firewire Output Glitches (Audigy 2

I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS and also create/edit videos quite often for various reasons. The main problem I have is with the firewire port. The port works perfectly fine for importing video via firewire, but when I try to export video, its constantly losing the connection and it just isn't stable. I have the latest drivers for it, I've tried rebooting my computer, and I don't have SP2 for XP. If anyone can help me out with this, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi! I have the same problems. Import a video works perfectly, but export is impossible.
My camcorder shows "DV-In" so the camcorder knows he will recieve a video, but it doesn't work. I get no picture on my camcorder.
I have the newest DirectX version, drivers...3,6 Ghz Athlon XP with an asrock motherboard with windows xp.
    thx for help,

  • Mid 2012 macbook pro glitching, freezing, overheating

Starting a few weeks ago, I noticed a change in my mid 2012 macbook pro. My laptop was losing charge EXTREMELY quickly, I would charge the laptop to 100%, and just an hour later (after not using it, but the lid closed and it was sleeping) it would be up to 60% charge, then when not in sleep and on, it would lose energy extremely quickly. I always make sure that unecessary background apps are not running--so that was not the problem. This problem went away after a week, but it was the first signal that something was wrong with my laptop.
Next, the laptop was having problems with waking up from sleep, I did an SMC reset and this problem was fixed.
After that, the laptop started glitching (static and banded lines on the bottom of the screen) and making this clicking noise when I was streaming video fullscreen on Netflix. I thought at first, that this was a problem with Silverlight, and reinstalled the silverlight plugin (several times). Then I noticed that the computer would glitch when I was streaming full screen on Netflix and picked up the laptop (moved it from a flat surface). This signaled to me that the problem was perhaps not software, but a hardware issue. I verified the disk and did a permissions report and neither were curative.
Further support that the problems are with hardware rather than hardware came to me when my computer presented itself with a fourth issue: the laptop, when being lifted or moved from a static surface, would sometimes freeze entirely and make the same clicking noise. This problem was not during fullscreen streaming, but had spread to when I was simply using more than one app at the same time (e.g. having Chrome and Word open together). When this happenend, the only solution would be to power down the computer and restart.
Finally, while sleeping with the lid closed in my backpack, I hear a whirring noise--I pick up the laptop and it was hot to the touch, overheating with the fans running on high speed.
I have no clue what is going on. I have taken the computer to my university's mac shop and they have suggested it is a logic board issue and I should give the computer in. I have scoured the forum for an answer of what is happening and am determined to find one. So I pose the problem to you--any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Macbook pro early 2011 - overheat and crash with blue screen and glitches

    Hi
since last wednesday my MBP has started to freeze and then crash with bluescreen, glitches and so on...
Most of the time doesnt not restart with any command as is overheating as well.
I did a clean installation on friday night and i am now running mavericks and then again on sunday it start with all the above issue. At the moment i am able to restart only if i reset NVRAM each time, which i do not think is really safe to do it everytime.
    i also tried
    Macs Fan Control
    gfxCardStatus
to fix but they doesn't help.
I read many customers are now experiencing similar problems with this mac as the GPU Amd is faulty.
APPLE SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE IT or will lose many custumers
I am now waiting to be seen at Genius bar on sunday, however i read about etrecheck in this related post
    http:/https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5081857?start=0&tstart=0
and meanwhile i want to hear your opinion...
    Looking forward

  • Intel imac display glitch and involuntary restart

Just want to know if anyone else has experienced this specific problem, there are plenty of complaints about intel imac displays but I can't be bothered to sift through them all trying to find a match for my problem.
A couple of months ago I was watching a video in quicktime and noticed that my screen was glitching and flashing fragmented diagonal lines - like a commodore 64 loading type thing. Then the spinning-ball came up and a force quit didn't do anything so I had to force shut down. I started up and it occured again. Then the screen went blank/black, but still lit up, and restarted without me doing anything. It also got stuck during start up the second time this occured. I panicked and ran out to buy a 500GB external drive, backed up all of my work and then re-installed mac osx from disk, archive and install job. This seemed to sort it and for the following two months it seemed OK. No sign of any problems.
Since then I have updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 (which I have suspicion that it screwed the firmware in my motu 828 firewire audio interface, costing me a £130 repair - but that's another painful story).
It happened again tonight (the screen thing, not the motu). And the ball came up and I couldn't do anything. Force shut down, restart - screen glitching again. Then I had 2 unexpected restarts, one getting stuck in startup. Then a successful startup but accompanied by the glitchy graphics, mainly red/pink pixellated diagonal lines flickering in and out. I ran a disk first aid - no problems. Did a disk permission repair. Shut down and ran a hardware test, the first few minutes of the test the screen was still at it but then stopped glitching, hardware test found no errors (it was an extended test too). Now I'm back on it and it's all OK.
    Any suggestions/similar stories?
When it occured 2 months ago I had the original ram that came with the imac. Now I have 2x1GB sticks of crucial ram.

That's it! Well, that's what I have. Unfortunately, I don't know about the cause, but I don't ever recall having it prior to an update going back about a year ago. I recall an update, and that update being immediately followed by some sort of Apple Graphics something-or-other. I feel pretty certain that's when I first noticed this. I just had my LCD replaced for another reason, but I think you'll agree, it's not an LCD issue. In my case, browser activity, scrolling up or down in a page, seems to be the most common trigger. I've also seen "pieces" of the torn page, on the screen when minimizing the browser to the dock (usually Firefox, but I think I've seen it with Opera and Safari too). Is there a way to find update packages installed somewhere? I'd know it if I saw it, and I'd definitely try removing that suspect package/update.

  • How can I tell if my firewire port is faulty?

I recently cannot import video from my canon elura 100 which connects using a 4-6pin firewire cable. I thought maybe it was the cable so I grabbed my brother's black macbook and it seems to import fine, it still isn't 100% smooth like I think it should be but when I plugged the camera back into my black macbook, the video that was being imported just kept freezing and it seemed warped. I tried this process a few times and kept getting the same results. I feel as though I may have a firewire port issue. How could I check on my own. I know that when I use my firewire 410, I have no problems so I don't know what could be wrong. Any help?

Did any of your problems start with Snow Leopard, is your brother's machine running the same version of SL.
Over in the audio forum there are those having some problems with their firewire interfaces. (glitches, static...etc)

  • No connection with Firewire but will connect and discharge with USB2.0

My 3rd generation 40gb iPod no longer appears on my desktop or iTunes window when connected via firewire. While connected, to 3 different Macs so far, it behaves as if its plugged into the AC adaper- the charging icon appears after a few minutes but will not mount.
However, when connecting with USB 2.0 the iPod mounts fine but it receives NO power, the battery discharges within 5 minutes and shuts off.
I've known about the USB 2.0 problem but never worried about it until, suddenly ( and apparently others are having this problem ) I am no longer able to mount the iPod via firewire.
I've tried resetting in all its various forms including toggeling the hold button and plugging into the AC adapter and I have thoroughly read the trouble shooting pages.
Has Apple "orphaned" firewire? Is the 3rd generation iPod doomed to 5 minute or less connection times? Is this just a glitch that an update will fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Mirror Doors G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Its not the cable. I have cables and other Macs all over. I've tried the other Macs and different cables plus different cables and diferent dock connectors.
Sorry, I should have mentioned that I already eliminated that possibility.
The firewire problem just started Sep 1, 2006. I'm wondering if the last iPod update that occured the last time I was mounted via firewire initiated the problem. This seems more likely than it might have becuase of other posts complaining of firewire connection problems.
    Thanks for responding though!

  • Transfer files to MacBook from external drives & MacPro without FireWire

I just realized my Macbook (13 inch aluminum) doesn't have a FireWire port. WHY? I can't believe I didn't notice when I bought the thing. I assumed that a FireWrire port was standard like USB. I know that I can transfer files from my MacPro Desktop using migration assistant. However, it doesn't let me pick and choose which files to transfer. Is the best plan to transfer everything all at once and then delete what I don't want from the MacBook? I've also got a lot of individual files & folders on external FireWire drives that I'd like to copy to my MacBook. Is there a way to hook up an external FireWire hard drive to my MacBook? Are there FireWire to USB adapters? Am I going to have to transfer these files via USB memory sticks, CD-R's & DVD-R's? Or maybe it would be a better idea to dump them on my MacPro, use Migration assistant to copy it all at once and then pick and choose what to keep on my MacBook.
I know I've got a lot of questions. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I assumed that a FireWrire port was standard like USB.
It is, just not on the aluminum Macbook.
It can be done with USB, but it is slower and less reliable.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the aluminum Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook.
Firewire allows two operating modes. One is asynchronous, like USB which suffers from latency, bus contention and collisions.
The other is isochronous mode, and it lets a device carve out a certain dedicated amount of bandwidth that other devices can't touch. It gets a certain number of time slices each second all its own. The advantages for audio/video should be obvious: that stream of data can just keep on flowing, and as long as there isn't more bandwidth demand than the wire can handle, nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches.

  • Video Glitches with 10.5.2 & 10.5.1

I've had a number of video glitches with my 2x867 MDD with the OEM GeForce4 MX (32mb) card, an Apple 15" Studio Display on the ADC port and an LG 22" LCD on the DVI port when using 10.5.2. I have not noticed them booting off the Leopard Update DVD. What I see is flashes of mostly white boxes with green or black edges. The flashes are fewer with 10.5.2 than they were with 10.5.1, but they're not gone.
Also, from time-to-time, the LG monitor will be lost at boot-up. Nothing will display on it, System Profiler says there's only the ADC connected monitor, etc. even though the monitor shows that it's connected to the computer.
    Anybody else seeing this?
    Ray

I am Currently restoring my Power Book after a significant meltdown.
Thanks for posting I too saw the shearing effect but shrugged it off thinking oh well I'll just reboot!
If you are seeing this Buy a fire wire drive NOW and Back-up.
I suspect the Video update changed a low level feature in the power management routines and this resulted in my Power book cooking itself.
I've got a 12mth old Hitachi 7200 PATA drive in my Power Book after the Apple Drive cooked itself soem tim back and I have now got to back-up and restore my whole system. Luckiliy I have plenty of Big fast firewire drives around so I'm imaging the corrupt drive and going to run the Hitachi tool on it via a WINDOZE Thinkpad. Then a combination of clean install of 10.5.x and a migration assisted restore should do it.
I'm really not very happy though! My Time machine image did not restore and the disk repair did not work. I have a corrupted asl.DB ( the log file for Apple System Logs) and the mac won't boot from its internal drive.
I'll post the resolution here as it happens I'm at hour Disaster + 24 so I'm really cranky!
I suggest If you have a G4 Power Book you resist the temptation to install the video update.

  • Audio Glitches on Timeline, but not when played in QT?

I had a client send me his project on a harddrive.
They exported a .mov file from FCP and it has no audio glitches when played with Quicktime.
But if i drag that file to a timeline and watch it through my DSR-25 to a NTSC monitor, it has audio glitches in certain spots.
Always at that spot though and if i watch the file in Quicktime, it plays fine.
All audio was exported originally out of FCP using Quicktime Movie with 48khz, 16 bit stereo so nothing needed to be rendered.
Seems like it has something to do with it going over via firewire through my DSR-25.
Has anyone else had this problem.
I can't make a Master DVCam tape for this master because of these audio glitches.
    Thanks for any help,
    Brian

I read a post about a user having this same sort of issue.
He said when he turns off his video layer, in my case just V1, the audio played fine.
    Same with mine.
So it seems to be an issue with the video track playing with the audio track.
If i export it and bring it back in, will it just create that same audio glitch?
Guess i will have to try.
Anyone have this issue or similiar?
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Firewire Output to DSR-11

This question will seem redundant, but I haven't found a question like it in the forum, nor a question that has been answered that comes close to it. I just switched to a Mac over a month ago. I installed a second internal drive for video capturing. I only have a DSR-11 deck hooked to the FW port in the back. I use DV tapes in/out to FCP 5.1; however, the problem is the output to the deck. When I print to tape or try to let the timeline play out to my BetaSP deck via the DSR I keep getting drop frames on the output, which prohibits me from being able to record to the BetaSP. Now, let me say this. I have used the manuals and this forum to trouble shoot this problem. I have tried all of the settings tweaks, and every configuration that I see someone else has posted. However, my setup is very simple. DV NTSC 48khz and Firewire. I don't mirror to the desktop, and I only use two tracks for video and 4 tracks of audio. Safe RT is checked, and I've tried lowering the playback settings until the quality was too poor to use. FCP reads my DSR-11 deck fine, and I don't have problems inputting video footage via the deck. I've tried both the front and back FW ports, and get the same results. There are no other FW devices attached. Please, someone help me out. Thanks.

    Bogiesan,
    To answer your question:
So you are using the DSR as the transcoder and taking the composite outs up to your Beta?
Yes, I am. That's exactly what I'm doing. I have to use Beta SP for the TV station.
And to address your last instructions. What I did before I came to this forum to make a post was to export the timeline to a Quicktime mov; which is what you're saying, and then I brought it back into the project. Closed the old sequence; started a new sequence, and dropped the new mov into the timeline. I believe this is what you're saying.? So, I tried that before I asked the question. I had already put the playback settings back to full because I felt like a mov file would work without any glitches, but I got the same problem.
Now, let me try to address Andy's questions because I can tell that he didn't read my post properly.
How much processor power do you have?
I have a quad. It says that in my profile. Quads have only one processor configuration.
How much RAM do you have? How much ram I have is irrelevant b/c I didn't say that my system was running slow, but I have 2 gigs.
These details should be listed in your profile settings, to give people here the information they need to help you.
    You could also supply:
How much Hard Drive free space do you have?
(If it’s less than 15 to 20% on any HD, your system will work slowly). I have a 250 + 250.
Are ANY of your Media files on your System Drive?
(If they are, your system will work slowly).
I said that I installed a second hd to capture video in my original post, so as for you to not assume that I would put video files on my system drive.
And if I sound unappreciative I'm not, it's just that I had already wrote so much that it should have been clear that I wouldn't allow simple system settings to be the reason for me asking the question. I generally read all material and check forums before I ask any questions. Because I really do believe there are stupid questions if someone else has already asked and had his/her question answered.
So, does anyone have any idea on why I may still be getting dropped frames on output? Again, I've already tried exporting the sequence to a mov and re-importing it back into FCP to print to tape. And by the way, I have to add closed captions to my final tape. If I didn't have to do this I really would have a better work around, but b/c of this I have to pretty much do it this way. Right now, I don't have the funding to just go by a separate video card, so that suggestion will just be taken with a grain of salt. Thanks.

  • Questions about streaming disk, firewire and SATA raids.

I have two internal drives, one for applications/system and one for audio, which had been suitable up until recently. I recently added Ivory, and some addons to the BFD drums. The BFD Deluxe has significantlly more velocity layers, and is placing a strain on computer and drives.
I moved the BFD drum data onto an external firewire 800 (because of data size) The BFD drums seem to be having a hard time keeping up, (it glitches and stutters).
I have 3 gig of ram, so I guess I'll add more ram. But I'm unsure about SATA raids. Is it better to add an external firewire RAID?... Mac Guru, has some reasonably priced kits. Has anyone had experience with them?
There is a 3 drive bay which you can put inside your G5, but I have concerns it will draw too much power and generate too much heat.
Lastly, if I buy a 4 bay external raid, can i create a 3 drive raid, and keep 1 one drive as a seperate drive (do I have to stripe all drives in one enclosure, or can they be seperate?
Any insights would be helpful.. thanx

depending on whether you use eSATA or FW, you have differnet options as to how you mount the drives as volume(s) to your computer. FW pretty much limits you to a single logical volume, although it could be RAID-0 or in some rare instances, RAID-5 with certain enclosures.
eSATA, again, depending on the specific enclosure, can mount all the drives as a single volume, but you may have the option to mount multiple logical volumes... like the 1 RAID-0 and 1 independent volume like you mentioned.
earlier tonight i recommended this drive to someone else for a laptop application...

for a desktop application, you would probably go with their 3.5" solutions since buss power is not important to you.
this might not be accurate, but this is my understanding of highest read/write performance to lowest in terms of general specs (certain products may have advantages / dissadvantages depending on the implementation) all RAID-0 volumes are assumed to be 2 drive RAID, although it is technically possible to do more with certain hardware.
    1) RAID-0 eSATA
    2) RAID-0 FW
    3) RAID-5 eSATA
    4) single eSATA
    5) single FW
    6) RAID-0 USB2
    7) RAID-5 FW
    8) single USB2
    9) RAID-5 USB2
RAID-5 is a real wild card here because a 3 drive image is really not the intended configuration for RAID-5... more drives is preferred before you start reaching theoretical efficiency and the actual XOR engine or lack of one can drastically affect your performance levels.
