Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.7 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!

Dear all,
I have an external HD that would always mount without any problem on my black Macbook.
Last month, I upgraded my system RAM from 2GB to 4Gb. It made the Macbook much faster, but also seriously reduced battery life. In a drive to fix this battery problem I reset the SMC.
Now, I do not know if these issues are related, but the strange thing is that mre or less since then my external drive won't mount anymore. The external drive itself seems fine. And when i plug it into a (powered) USB port of my external display, it will mount. But connecting it directly to the Macbook it won't anymore.
Somehow it seems like the Macbook's USB port is not giving off enough power anymore. Maybe it's because of the SMC reset?
Any ideas????

Harddrive won't mount anymore

Hello all,
One of my internal hard disks (Seagate Baracude 7200.11, 1 TB) of my Mac Pro won't mount anymore. The disk is spinning as normal, I don't hear a weird sound or anything. It just won't mount. Not in Finder, not in Disk Utility and not in Systemprofile.
I did try diskwarrior and some other utility apps, but nothing seems to work.
Is the disk just 'dead'? Or is there something wrong with the SATA connection?

Thank you for the answers. I went to the Seagate website and did a firmware upgrade for the same hard drive that is (still) working...
The other one is 'dead' but, according to Seagate, the files are still on the disk. I contacted them to help me out. There are people that claim that Seagate will recover for free because it's a firmware problem.

i have tried everything reset pmu, reset pram, replaced battery
i have a gtech 160 gb when i connect it to thr g5 the led light up
it stares to fliker like it loading then nothing( i can connect it my g4 pb is it mounts fine)
is there a way to test the port?
is this a comon problem??

External firewire drive won't mount

I've got an external Western Digital firewire drive that's been somewhat flaky recently, and today my Mac won't mount it.
When I open Disk Utilities, I can see the drive (along with the other drives daisy chained together). When I click on "mount," I get a message saying the drive can't be mounted and that I should try running disk repair. I've run both repair disk and verify disk a few, and each time it says that everything is just fine. However, the drive still won't mount.
Any thoughts about how to get the drive working again?
For what it's worth, this drive is basically my manual backup drive that I use each day just as a safety backup. I don't think I'm going to lose anything extremely important if this drive is dead or if I have to try erasing the drive, but I'd like to see if I can rescue it first before taking drastic action like that.

That sounded like a brilliant thing to try. I took the drive out of the daisy chain and plugged it into the unused firewire port in the computer. I ran the repairs and crossed my fingers, but came up with the same thing
At least I've eliminated one more option. Wish I could mark your reply helpful, but I'm not seeing that option available . . .maybe I've used my "helpfuls" for one day.
Although this is PROBABLY duplicate material on this drive, I'm going to hold out for another day or so in case anybody else comes up with another brilliant idea before I take the plunge and reformat the drive.

60 GB external Firewire Drive Won't Mount

I have a 60GB external Firewire Drive that I have been using for a long time. I just turned on the computer and it won;t mount. I opened up the Disk Utility and I see that on the left side it says "57.3 GB Maxtor." I repaired permissions and verify disk. It still won't mount.
I don't want to have to erase it if possible. There are files I need on that drive. How can I get it to mount so I can grab some files off of it and move it to another drive?

What the message is telling you is that Disk Utility and the "underlying task," the Unix utility fsck, can't repair the volume.
Time for stronger medicine if the data is critical. There are commercial products that work differently and can recover disks when fsck can't. Look at Disk Warrior or Drive Genius. BUT... given that Disk Utility thinks it's a "non HFS volume," I wouldn't be optimistic.
If the external drive's data is unimportant - e.g., a backup you could rewrite - then see if Disk Utility can repartition and erase the drive. If only the catalog or partition map is bad, this will get you a working drive. But if you can't repartition with Disk Utility, suspect a hardware malfunction and check your warranty.

FireWire drives won't mount

Neither of my FireWire drives will mount on either my iMac 20" G5 or my iBook G4...I have a 500GB WD MyBook and a La Cie 80G. I've gone through all the suggested tips, and still nothing. I've reset the PRAM several times, reset the firewire bus by turning off the computer and unplugging it and the drives for a while, etc. I've tried different cables, too.
The drive shows up in the system profiler as an unknown device but not in the Finder. I have a USB hub with a card reader and 4G SD card that shows up just fine. I tried the MyBook in the USB port but it didn't show up there either.
The power supplies are working, as the indicator lights are on for both drives.
The MyBook was working fine until recently; not sure when it stopped working. I hadn't used the La Cie for a while but hooked it up to store iMovie files.
I plugged a Canopus ADVC-55 analog-to-digital convert into the FW port on both computers and it showed up as a named device in System Profiler. That tells me the port is OK and the problem is with the HDs--right?

I'm having a very similar issue as of the last few weeks at least. Periodically I'll turn my FW drive on and it won't mount and isn't visible in Disk Utility. This is usually after waking the computer from sleep.
The only way to get it back is to restart.
Also the console shows a long running list of errors that seem to occur non-stop when the drive is on, connected, but not mounting.

I've also noticed that the system occasionally will not boot up and instead freezes on the Apple logo on startup. Not sure if this is related however.

Hard Drive won't mount anymore?

All of a sudden my external HD won't mount on the desktop? I disconnected it, unplugged it, shut down and waited several minutes and tried over and over. It's a lacie and maybe 7 years or so old. I use it exclusively for my TimeMachine backup. I'm wondering if it's just worn out from the constant hourly back ups? The light just keeps blinking and won't stay on either. Anybody know what the problem is?

Don't scrap the drive before you check it. Assuming this is a firewire drive, ever since Mac OS X.3.9 the solder connection of the FW port in the Lacie Enclosure would disconnect from excessive heat. Get another enclosure to try the drive in before you toss it. I have dealt with hundreds of these all with the same symptoms you describe. Unfortunately even years ago they would not sell a replacement PC board but often times they were repairable.

I'm not a Mac newbie, but I am a FW newb. I've used USB 2.0 external drives, but I finally got a MacBook Pro so I thought I'd give FW 800 a go. I got a drive that's designed to work well with Mac's (Seagate) that does USB 2, FW 400 or FW 800. I'm using FW 800, which works fine, however once I eject the drive it won't mount again if I plug it in again to my Mac or my partner's unless I reboot the machine I'm trying to get it to mount on.
It's quite odd as this wasn't the case with USB 2.0, ie it'd mount over and over without reboots after and eject. Is this how it's meant to be or is something else awry?

FW Drive Won't Mount Anymore

I have a Lacie Porsche 160 GB FW HD plugged into my G4 iMac running 10.4.8. Til this morning everything always worked fine. Then today I tried to access the FW drive and Finder froze with the beachball. Tried to restart and it wouldn't. So I turned off the computer. When I turned it back on, the Lacie FW drive didn't show up. I've restarted, unplugged and replugged the FW cable and power, tried another computer, and nothing works.
It doesn't show up in Disk Utility or the Data Rescue II demo. It does show up in System Profiler as a unknown drive. And I downloaded the Lacie Update Tool and was able to update it but it still won't work. Any ideas? Thanks.
P.S. When I turn on the Lacie drive, it spins up for a couple seconds, then kinda does a "click clunk" clicking for about 9 times before stopping making noise.

If for some reason the FireWire ports aren't acting properly (thus contributing
to the external FW drive not being seen) you can reset the PMU and that
should help in cases where the FW port itself goes unrecognized.
If the System Profiler can see the FW ports and the external drive, but
you can't use the FW drive, you may be able to get a disk utility to see
the drive and try repairing it. If the Mac's Disk Utility can't fix it and shows
errors, you may need to get a third-party disk utility such as DiskWarrior.
This utility can sometimes fix errors that otherwise may require more
drastic means to save the drive. Other means can cause loss of data.
Some damage or corruption on a hard drive may require erasing and re-
formatting to get it to mount, if an error stops it from being seen. This is
more indepth than just reformatting, and would usually require one to use
the Disk Utility's zero-data option; of course, all drive data is then lost.
There may be a utility that force-mounts an external disk drive, but I
have not found or looked for one. Back in the SCSI days, there were a
few good utilities to mount hard drives; I used them.
PS: The "clunk - clunk" is not a good sign in any hard drive.
Could be it has physically failed.

Firewire HD won't mount

We have two macs. We recently restored our MacBook from a hard drive error, and we have a lot of important stuff saved on a My Book external HD. Unfortunately, it doesn't mount on either the MacBook (running OS 10.5.5) or our iBook (running 10.4). It appears in the system profiler but not in either Finder or Disk Utility. Does anyone know what might be the problem, or better yet, the solution?

Seems like the FireWire issue needs to be revisited quite often. Here is my often repeated suggestion which appears to clear up many FireWire issues: reset the FireWire ports. Panther has a Finder Preference to show mounted volumes on the Desktop. You must set this for mounted drives to be visible. Please follow these instructions to reset your FireWire port. Here is a summary:
1. shut down and disconnect all external drives and peripherals ; make sure nothing is connected to the FireWire ports.
2. use Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal boot drive.
3. shut down and disconnect the AC power from the computer as well as the drives; if laptop, also remove battery; let sit unpowered and unconnected for 15 minutes.
4. reconnect AC power to only the computer (battery too if laptop)
restart computer.
5. verify that FireWire ports are visible within Apple System Profiler.
6. reconnect FireWire drive (only one); refresh window within Apple System Profiler to rescan the FireWire bus; confirm that drive is visible.
7. confirm drive is OK by using Apple Disk Utility and apply First Aid
repeat for other drives, one at a time.
And, you can try using Disk Utility to repair the drive:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Formac XTR Raven 250GB won't mount anymore

Hey all, I've had my Raven for a couple of years now, never had a problem till last night when I reconnected it and it wouldn't mount. Here's what I've tried.
Restart
Open Disk Utility (the drive doesn't show up)
Open System Profile (again drive doesn't show up under firewire)
Repair Permissions
Zap PRAM and PMU
Try to boot into it by holding down F at start up as it has a clone of my disk on it.
Try to open it in Diskwarrior to repair it, diskwarrior doesn't see it.
Thats pretty much everything.
The drive turns on fine, spins up but nothing else, I've changed the power adapter the only thing I haven't tried is connecting it via firewire 400 but I have to wait till tomorrow to buy a 400 wire.
Anyone else having my woes? or any ideas?

I got a firewire 400 cable today and connected and now my drive mounts perfectly.
It would seem that my firewire 800 cable has given up, or the port, I won't be sure until I get a new 800 cable.

WD firewire drive won't mount, help?!

My firewire external HD wouldn't mount, although, using disk utility, I can see the said drive. So, I clicked on 'repair' button, but got the message saying "filesystem verify or repair failed". What should I do next? I could try the recommended method of using restore disk, but I'm not sure if that'll erase all the content from my HD. Should I try other recovery software? What would be the software to use? Any suggestion is appriciated.

I feel for you, but don’t give up too quickly. Start by trying to make a copy of your most important data onto the new drive. Format that new drive with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the GUID Partition Scheme.
As the drive shows in Disk Utility there is a fair chance that it will show as an available source in Carbon Copy Cloner. When you have copied CCC from the downloaded .dmg to your internal volume (say into your Utilities folder), launch CCC, select the menu item ‘Update CCC’, check the ‘beta releases’ box and you will have the latest release, v3.3.1-b3. (Even though it’s a beta is has been out for long enough to have been well tested, and it will maximise your chances of copying where there are disk problems). If that volume does appear in CCC’s Source menu, select it and choose “Incremental backup of selected items”. Select small groups of items to be copied, starting with those that are most important to you. Repeat with other groups of items until you think you have managed to copy as much as you can. (Failures to copy certain items will not adversely affect whatever has already been copied).
Don’t hesitate to get DiskWarrior -- everyone should have it. Once you think you have copied as much as you can with CCC, give DiskWarrior a try. It is agonisingly slow if run from its CD - copy it to your boot volume and run it from there. Run it in its default mode first. If that fails try its "Scavenge" mode.

External Firewire HD won't mount after Connecting to B&W w/ bad Firewire

I've tried and tried to find the answer, so finally I post...
I've had two external Firewire Laptop HD enclosures become unmountable after hooking them up to a 400 Mhz powermac G3. This has been 6 months apart. I used to use the Powermac B&W ... I know the Firewire worked at one time, but cant remember if it was before or after I added a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card.
After clean installing... 10.3.2 .... no Classic... I hoped it would wake up the Firewire, did not. So hooked up the external HD to the USB.... it worked. Then, went to the eMac and via Firewire hooke up the same external HD.... it worked.... for 2 hours. Disconecceted, reconnected and like the other one...... no more mount. Not in classic, not on any comuter. If I daisy chain it to another Firewire external, the About this Mac no longer recognizes info on either. Once removed, the computer recognized the info the good one. Disk Utilities does not recognize harddrives in the enclosure... I put a different HD inthe enclosure.. still not mounting
It spins and receives power.... but no mount. Is this firmware? The hard drive is not corrupted... I put it into a mac mini and was able to extract the info... but what has caused this B&W's fire wire to go, and caused 2 of my externals to go as well....

try the following to reset the ports:
1) zap PRAM - reboot holding down Cmd-Opt-P-R and left the machine boot cycle 3-4 times
2) reset Open Firmware
reboot holding down Cmd-Opt-O-F
at the screen type <reset-nvram</i>
press Return
type reset-all
press Return
3) disconnect ALL devices from the computer
unplug the computer from the wall
let it sit for 10-15 minutes
plug back in and reboot

External firewire drive won't mount on macbook but does on ibook

I'm trying to hook up my icybox external hard drive to my new macbook but it will not mount. It works fine on my Ibook G4.
Type is IB-351UE hard disk is a Maxtor.
I read about people having problems with USB drives but can't find much about Firewire drives.
