Firewire input for OnLocation CS4

Hi all,
i have been using a firewire out of my Panasonic 3CCD HD camera to a firewire in on an older vista machine.  i have upgraded to an Envy 15-1050NR computer.  It has
3 Universal Serial Bus(USB) 2.0,3rd port shared with eSATA Headphone-out/Microphone in combo drive ack (compatiblewith 3.5mm 4-conductor jack with stereo audio and mono mic); HDMI; eSATA + USB 2.0;1 RJ -45(LAN)
For me to shoot directly to OnLocation, what should i get on the other end of my firewire connection from my camera to my new computer.  Will Firewire to HDMI work?  what are my best quality options to use OnLocation?
Thanks in advance for your help.  Happy February!

Looks like you're in a bit of a pickle. Your machine has neither a Firewire input nor a PCMCIA socket so that you could add one.
OnLocation works only with Firewire ATM.
An Adobe employee on a forum stated late last year that adding HDMI support to OL was "high on their list of priorities", so cross your fingers for CS5.

  • Best Options for Raw Video in Onlocation CS4? ...and Stuff.

Hi...I am running out of time for this project because I cannot get the JVC GY-110 camera to match the settings in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. In other words, I can’t get my footage off the DV Tape! However, the “workaround” I found is to use Adobe OnLocation CS4. I easily got OnLocation to record live video. It’s glorious. It is recording in .AVI and I am wondering how to get this to record in MPEG2? I read that it can do that but cannot figure out how. I want to do this, 1) to edit in Premier Pro CS4 and 2) for the local TV station that wants it in that format. Can anyone please provide some insights here? Is MPEG format even what I should be doing or is .AVI ok?
The project is going to be used online and on a local TV station so the plan is to use Adobe Media Encoder CS4 to create formats for each.
Finally, to create overlays (I guess that is what you would call them) such as photographs, news info bars in the lower 3rd portion of the screen (etc) do you suggest I use Premiere Pro or Encore CS4?
    In summary, my questions are:
    1) Should I be using .AVI or .MPEG formats in OnLocation?
    2) How do you get OnLocation CS4 to record in MPEG?
    3) Is Encoder CS4 the best way to export video for multiple formats? If so, what is the best starting format?
    4) What is the best way to create overlays like news bars?
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
    Sincerely,
    ~A Desperate Nooby

You should import the files, captured with OL, into your PR project. Now you have two choices, either use dynamic link to Encore and have Encore do the encoding for you or you can encode yourself. This requires a basic understanding of bitrate settings, which you can easily gain from using a bitrate calculator, like http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php?PHPSESSID=6501b6b2b31f4c4a295bc8c2ba1e6f57
Encore is included with PR, so why not use it? It is so easy and you can add menu structures, subtitles, etc. to your DVD's. For other export formats, like WMV, H.264 etc. you don't need Encore, unless you want to burn to BR. Just use AME.
DV AVI type2 has the advantage that it is extremely easy to edit, does not put a lot of strain on your computer and will not show any noticeable degradation in quality when exporting.
    Hope this helps.

  • Firewire Output for Video Preview Intermittent

I'm experiencing a frustrating problem with After Effects these days.
We're producing some video to be projected, so to see what the final output will really look like, I'm doing video previews using FireWire so output goes directly to the projector.
It's been working great up until yesterday.  Was working fine until I had to restart my Mac.  Upon reboot, my the projector no longer gets any video output.
I've tried restarting numerous times, checked all connections, etc.  Got it working again after several restarts, but after switching over to Photoshop momentarily, the video output once again disappeared.
Any suggestions on how to regain consistent Firewire output for Video Previews?
    My setup:
    After Effects CS6
    Mac Pro
    OSX Version 10.7.5
Firewire Output of my Mac's monitor is going to the Firewire Input on my Sony Media Converter
RCA Video out (Composite video) going to the projector's video input.
    After Effects Video Preview preferences:
    Output Device:  FireWire
    Output Mode: Apple FireWire NTSC

    Thanks for your reply, Rick.
I finally figured it out... I had a background application running called iCam that monitors my security cameras.  I had forgotten that it uses Firewire and was intermittently hogging the resources.  Once I quit that application, everything was good once again.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, much appreciated!

  • Questions about export in OnLocation CS4

Hi, I was wondering if there is any benefit to using the export feature in OnLocation CS4 over merely opening the project folder and grabbing the files. It seems to just copy the files with an .xml file (?) into a new folder (which takes a long time) and is prone to crashing -which has happened to me twice. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
    JP

    Michael,
I've actually given up. The Export feature crashed on me twice doing... well... who knows? Easier and more reliable to just go into the folder and pluck the files myself.
The only purpose I can guess at is if you were working on a SAN or other networked storage. That way you could keep working/shooting while OnLocation copied the ready footage to your SAN for editing elsewhere. If you use the OS directly, it would drag all the resources. But that's my only guess.
Honestly, I am really disappointed with CS4. It seems that Adobe spent all this time incorporating "workflow enhancements" (like XML metadata, speech recognition, and that export feature) that they ignored, removed, or broke pieces that are crucial to the work to begin with. There are a few things I like (the new AME, the look of the interface, improved HDV/AVCHD handling) but it comes with sooooo many trade-offs.

  • Multiple Channels with Firewire Input

I posted this in the podcasting forum, and it occurred to me I might have better luck getting a response here. Apologies if you've seen this one before! I quote:
I have a feeling this is a stupid question, but I'd hate to go without asking, so... I'm using a Behringer Eurorack UB1202 with a Behringer F-Control firewire interface to record a podcast with 3 (sometimes 4) microphones. Is there a way I could use that setup to split the audio onto 3 (or four) separate tracks? I'm assuming the answer is "no," since it ultimately dumps into one firewire input and therefore (I guess) one signal. I imagine I might be able to split off left and right channels, yes? But with 3 mics, that would put one on one track and two on another? (I'm using an iBook, by the way, so I've only got one firewire port to work with...)
    Thanks for any advice!
    Quicksilver G4 | G3 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

..just because all the signals go
into my computer through one cord, that doesn't
necessarily mean that they can't be divided
out again, with the right equipment?
Yes exactly right. They make firewire audio devices that accept multiple analog inputs and have many analog outputs and it keeps it all straight.
Firewire is MANY times faster than a digital audio stream so the data can be "multiplexed". In other words, it only takes a few microseconds to send a few milliseconds of audio data so it sends some data from each channel, one channel at a time and then maybe some data to/from the disk(s) all on the same cable. Same goes for USB and Ethernet. Kind of like a hiway - every car does not need it's own road.
Figure that audio sampled at 96K is about 2MB/Sec and firewire can handle 400MB/sec Even 16 audio channels is only 32MB/Sec, well within Firewire's ability (but maybe your disk drive could not handle that rate?)

  • What happened to multiple camera support in OnLocation CS4?

Am I going crazy?  Didn't OnLocation CS4 support multiple cameras (changing between them with a drop down selection) after its first release?  But after one of those Adobe software upgrades it seems I need to close the app, turn off one camera, and start the application back up??
When I originally purchased my CS4 collection of software and began to use it, I used OnLocation to record clips from two identical Canon HV30 cameras.  In the "monitor" portion of the screen there was a drop down box that allowed to select between the two cameras currently attached to the computer.
However, after one of the several Adobe CS4 updates, this feature no longer seems to be included in the software.  There is no drop down box in the monitor window - instead it just says "Monitor: Canon Camcorder."
When I start OnLocation just one of the cameras shows up - the other is not even given as the option.  If I start OnLocation with only the second camcorder turned on, the software does in fact use that camcorder - so both work correctly with the software it just is either not recognizing both at the same time (as it did before) or refuses to let me change between them.
I can see both camcorders in the device manager.
I am not even asking for simultaneous recording here...

Yes, uninstalling 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 and rolling back to 4.0.0 should get you this feature back. However, I would strongly urge you not to do so. The patches fixed quite a few crasher bugs, so you'd be taking a big step backward in stability in return for that feature.
If the ability to switch cameras is essential to your workflow--and if you own CS3--I'd recommend that you use CS3 for your switching needs rather than running 4.0.

  • Stop Motion With OnLocation CS4???

    Hi,
I'm missing something here I think. There are also no references to Stop Motion or Time Lapse in the Help Files of OnLocation CS4...
There are at least Help files on Stop Motion and Time Lapse in CS3.
How do you do Stop Motion in CS4?
In CS3 there was a Stop Motion button you pressed to record the screen and move on to the next frame using the SplitScreen Overlay to create an Onion Skin affect.
But how do you achieve this with CS4 as there is no stop motion button!
    Cheers

Yes, I still have CS3 version, but I was hoping for more improvement rather than a complete drop.
Even with the CS3 version, when you took a few frames and then played back, you then could no longer capture frames to the same timeline. Capturing another frame started another timeline, which was a nuisance.
Anyway we bit the bullet as we need to use tools that do what we want rather than using a tool that restricts us to doing things according to what it decides we should do, so we purchased Stop Motion Pro HD on Friday.
Anyway Onlocation should never have been the tool to do stop motion, if you are out on a location, when do you get the time needed to do it? How many people would have actually used the stop motion option while out on a location like a beach or street or field. Maybe thats why it wasn't used very often.
Stop motion should be an option with Premiere Pro as this would be a studio environment anyway?
I bet if it was available in Premiere Pro, Adobe would see more activity of the stop motion "feature"?

  • OnLocation CS4 startup problem

    Help please.
I have the same problem as mentioned in some point before.
But as nobody wrote a solution, i ask also if anybody can help me.

  • License for OL CS4

What happened? OL CS3 came with its own serial number, so I was able to install it on my laptop separately from the office/home installation of Production Premium. The CS4 Master Collection license allows for only a home/office installation on a total of 2 PCs [only one used at a time] leaving me with no legit install of OL on a laptop, which is what anyone in need of the app would be wont to do. I think an explanation is in order here.

Our lead time for CS3 was too short to incorporate OnLocation into the Premiere or suite installer, so the program came on separate installation disc with its own serial number. For CS4, we were able to fold OnLocation into the larger installers. Anticipating exactly the situation you present, we designed the activation for OnLocation so that it does not count against the limit of two activations that you cite.
So you can install at will on your laptop. Let us know what you think of the new version...

  • Firewire scratch disk with CS4/ 10.6.4

I'm currently using CS4 in an '07 iMac and trying to use a Newertech Ministack external drive as a dedicated scratch disk. The external drive has been erased and freshly formatted as Extended Journaled, with no OS or any other apps. This was a method(recommneded at the time) I used successsfully with a MBP running 10.5 and a LaCie external drive.
Now, when I try and designate the external as the no. 1 drive on the list in Performance Preferences, it keeps reverting back to the internal drive as #1 after restarting PS. I move the external to the first position on the list and check the Active box. The internal drive is at 2 and the Active box unchecked. When I quit PS and start it up again, the internal is back at the first position with Active checked and the external at 2 and unchecked.
Any way to make it stick?
    Any insight  greatly appreciated.
    '07 iMac 20"/ 10.6.2/ PS CS4 11.0.1/ Ministack V2 via firewire.

    Thanks for replying.
Have been doing service on a bunch of machines lately, so the journaling was done on auto pilot. Have gone back and reformatted the drive as extended.
Trashed the prefs via the 'Command/shift/option' method with no change. What's funny is that there is no " Adobe Photoshop CS Settings" folder in the Preferences folder in Library. So can't drag it to the trash.
    So back to square one.

  • Error while running a query-Input for variable 'Posting Period is invalid

    Hi All,
NOTE: This error is only cropping up when I input 12 in the posting period variable selection. If I put in any other value from 1-11 I am not getting any errors. Any ideas why this might be happening?
I am getting the following error when I try and run a query - "Input for variable 'Posting Period (Single entry, mandatory)' is invalid" - On further clicking on this error the message displayed is as follows -
    Diagnosis
Variable Posting Period (Single Value Entry, Mandatory) is used as a lower limit (X) and an upper limit () in an interval selection. This limit has the value #.
    System Response
    Procedure
Enter a different value for variable Posting Period (Single Value Entry, Mandatory). If the value of the other limit is determined by another variable, you can change its value also.
    Procedure for System Administration

    OK.
Well, if the variable is not used in any interval selection, then I would say "something happened to it".
I would make a copy of the query and run it to check if I get the same problem with period 12.
-> If not, something is wrong in the original query (you can proceed as below, if changes to original are permitted).
If so, then try removing the variable completely from the query and hardcode restriction to 12.
-> If problem still persists, I would have to do some thinking.
If problem is gone, then add the variable again. Check.
-> If problem is back, then the variable "is sick". Only quick thing to do, is to build an identical variable and use that one.
If problem also happens with the new variable, then it's time to share this experience with someone else and consider raising an OSS.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over  stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
    Thanks!
    2.66 intell core2duo
    2009 iMac
    8gig ram
    1 gig hd
    OSX ver. 10.8

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

  • Can not select external input for sound

can not select external input for sound

    Hey there RoosterMonkey,
It sounds like you have Soundtrack Pro installed but you cannot select your external audio device as an input. I recommend the troubleshooting steps from the article named:
    Soundtrack Pro 3: Troubleshooting Basics
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3659
Update to the latest software versions
From the Apple () menu, choose Software Update and make sure that you have the most recent updates for your versions of Soundtrack Pro 3, QuickTime, Compressor, Pro Application Support, and other important system files. Installing the latest updates ensures that your software has the latest improvements and enhancements.
Note: Be sure the application is in the Applications folder and is named Soundtrack Pro before running Software Update.
Check compatibility and driver versions for third-party devices
If you're using a third-party sound card, MIDI interface, storage system, control surface, or plug-in, check the support area on the manufacturer's website to be sure that you're using the latest version of the relevant driver or other software for your product. For information on troubleshooting possible issues with Audio Unit plug-ins, go to Soundtrack Pro 3: Troubleshooting Audio Unit plug-in issues.
Try a different Multitrack Project or Audio File Project
Sometimes project files can become damaged, causing unexpected behavior in Soundtrack Pro. To create a fresh project, choose File, then New and select Multitrack Project or Audio File. Test to see if the issue is resolved in the new project.
    Delete the User Preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Soundtrack Pro to its original settings. This will not impact your project files. To reset your Soundtrack Pro user preference settings to their original state:
Quit Soundtrack Pro if it is open.
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar.
Type ~/Library/Preferences  in the "Go to the folder" field.
Remove the "com.apple.soundtrackpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Application Support/Soundtrack Pro  in the "Go to the folder" field.
Remove the "EffectsCache.plist" file from the Soundtrack Pro folder.
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Application Support/Soundtrack Pro/Layouts  in the "Go to folder" field.
Remove the "Soundtrack Pro.saved.moduleLayout" file from the Layouts folder.
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Caches in the "Go to folder" field.
Remove the "com.apple.audiounits.cache" from the Caches folder.
Remove receipts and reinstall Soundtrack Pro 3 and Compressor
Another approach you might consider is reinstalling Soundtrack Pro and Compressor. To do this effectively, you need to remove the applications and their receipts, then install Soundtrack Pro and use Software Update to install additional updates. Compressor gets installed automatically when you install Soundtrack Pro. You don't have to remove everything that was installed with Soundtrack Pro, so follow the steps below to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Soundtrack Pro. Note: Make sure that you have your installation discs handy before beginning.
In Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard or OS X Lion
Open the Terminal application and enter the following commands one at a time and an administrator password when prompted. Note: The commands are case sensitive.
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.Compressor
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.Qmaster
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.VideoOutSupport
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.PSTSharedA
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.AppleHDVCodec
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.AppleIntermediateCodec
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.DSPPublishing
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.SoundtrackPro
    sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.Uncompressed422
Then, reinstall Soundtrack Pro and Compressor using the following steps:
Open the Applications folder. Drag the Soundtrack Pro and Compressor applications to the Trash.
Insert your Logic Studio or Final Cut Studio installation disc and install Soundtrack Pro.
When finished installing, choose the Apple () menu, then Software Update to update your software to the latest version.
Open Soundtrack Pro to verify that the issue has been resolved.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.
