Firewire INSIDE the computer? WHY?

I have noticed quite a few PCI cards have Firewire and/or USB ports that will be inside the case of the computer.
This was also the case on some G4's
WHY?
What could this be used for? What could I use the internal port for?
Thanks
Pat

I have wondered what sort of Firewire or USB devices people would want inside their computer cases, but that is what those ports are for. We have some cards of that type but have never used the internal ports.
On the other hand, I have installed SATA cards that have internal and external ports. These allow installing a couple of extra hard drives in the case plus several external drives. This not only provides practically unlimited storage, but also allows keeping backup sets of drives in a secure seperate location, such as a bank. We had a fire in 1991 that totally altered my philosophy regarding backups. You can never have too many.

How do you take out the quarter sized battery inside the computer?

    Hi,
We do not know your computer therefore can not say how. In general, open the case, locate it (RTC or CMOS battery), disconnect cables (if any) and pull it out.
    Regards.

  • I'm unable to update Firefox. operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items. I own the computer, why would I not have permission? This has happened other times and I don't know what it means.

I just wanted to update firefox and it won't let me. I drag the icon into applications, then a window ask me if I want to replace older version. I click yes and the window mentioned above appears. I purchased this computer new, I'm the only owner. Why would I not give myself permission to do something on my own computer.

If you get an error message that you do not have sufficient permissions or have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

    Right, more information:
Its definitely Itunes not my ipod. Problem does not exist on a windows xp machine I plugged my ipod into.
I have created a new user on my vista machine and this has not worked. I am just about to uninstall quicktime and itunes and all other apple products from my machine to resinstall them (I will also do a registry clean after the uninstall) I'm getting really fed up with this. There must be a better way of sorting out this problem than this. What actually is causing the issue. Do apple have support guys on this forum?

  • Why can't I use the Column Browser for my iPod when connected to the computer?

In iTunes 11, I can use the Column Browser while viewing my music library on the computer.  But it's inexplicably not available for viewing the music on my iPod when it's connected to the computer to sync.
The Column Browser is the simplest, easiest, most elegant way for me to review what's on my iPod, and create Playlists from my music and CD books.  It was available in 10.7 and is available on the computer, why not the iPod????!!!???
Why mess around changing something that isn't broken - after all these years why can't that option still be available?  It doesn't have to be the default, just be available. Will I have to downgrade to 10.7 yet again????
And you don't even have a relevant category for me to choose from below!!  It makes sense to me that you provide a general "Using iTunes" category.

Thanks for your reply, but I've already done that and the Column Browser options are completely grayed out.  I've taken a screen shot and hope I can paste it in here.  You'll see I have the sidebar open.  That's the way I prefer to deal with iTunes.
This happened after I updated to iTunes 11.0.4.  Perhaps that changed the setting options. I think I had the Column Browser option prior to that, but I just got a new iPod and I was busy loading stuff, so not completely sure if it worked before the update.  But I think I would have noticed, because it bugs me so much not to have the option.

  • My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power, BEFORE I switch it on with the button, why? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out.

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.

    Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully.   I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly.  Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power.  I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB).  The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well.  I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.))  This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008.  I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing.  OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1  will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord.

  • Keep the battery inside the Macbook at all times?!

So, there's this guy from the Apple store that told me "You are not supposed to pull out your battery. You only pull it out if the battery is bad. It could actually damage your computer by not having the battery inside." after he failed to make my battery come out (The clear plastic tab came off and I only got my macbook for a week!!). Is that true? Because my friend told me when I use the wall adapter I shouldn't keep the battery inside..Any help is appreciated.

Of gosh no that is not right. You CAN operate (meaning it's possible) the computer w/o the battery in. It is not however, recommended. RUnning the computer w/o battery will decrease the processor as it runs in a safer type mode to reduce the chance of failure.
Also keep in mind that when you have the battery removed and are using the computer a simple tug of the MagSafe (very sensitive) will cause the entire computer to turn off improperly and further risking damage.
All Apple laptops are intelligent when charging the battery. Unlike some other things where it's bad to always have it plugged in as it will cause "overcharging" the Apple batteries do not do this. When it is plugged in the computer charges the battery to be full (or more then 95%). Once that is finished it stops charging the battery and runs off the power from the wall only until the battery falls below 95% then it will begin recharging.
So all in all, you CAN remove the battery if you need to, but to answer your question you really shouldn't remove the battery...The only reason i've ever had to remove my battery from my MB or my iBook was to do work inside the computer (upgrading RAM/HD) and that has been over the course of 5 years.

  • My screen moved inside the case. Help!

I recently had to ship my iMac G5 via UPS. I used all of the original packaging so I figured it would be ok. Apparently it was jarred pretty badly, because when I put it on my desk I noticed that the screen had shifted inside the computer. The right side dropped about a quarter inch. Is this something that I should attempt to fix myself or do I dare touch it? Any thoughts?

If it's still under warranty, then you should take it in for service to keep the rest of your warranty in-tact.
I imagine they'll charge you since it was an impact that caused it.
But, if you attempt to adjust it yourself, they may void the rest of your warranty.
Adjusting the screen is going to require removing everything from the first two iMac G5 versions. And, on the iMac G5 "iSight" version, you cannot open it yourself anyway.
Of course, you could always bounce it on it's head the other direction
    But, I wouldn't recommend that.
Personally, I'd pay the service charge for adjustment if it's under warranty.
If it's not the iSight version, then it can be done yourself. But, there are lots, and lots of connections that you need to make sure to get back in-place properly. I've watched them disassemble and reassemble two of mine to get to the LCD screen. So, I know it's a big job.
It wouldn't intimidate me. But, I used to build and design computers (and even electrical components) for a living.
But, for someone who has not done this professionally, I would enter the project cautiously. You can do it. But, you need to pay very close attention to how you dismantle it and get it reassembled exactly the same way.
    Hope this helps.

  • Certificate for the website, was going to copy and send an email to the website to ask about the certificate. I got my cursor just inside the pop up and the whole computer shut down. Why what happened i am not sure about going to the website now....

    Question
Went to Crossings Book Club website while there something popped up about the certificate for the website, i was going to copy it and send an email to the website to ask about the certificate. I got my cursor just inside the pop up and the whole computer shut down.

If you think getting your web pages to appear OK in all the major browsers is tricky then dealing with email clients is way worse. There are so many of them.
If you want to bulk email yourself, there are apps for it and their templates will work in most cases...

This one will create the form, database and send out the emails...

The alternative is to use a marketing service if your business can justify the cost. Their templates are tested in all the common email clients...

  • TS3850 I am using a Sony HBR -VLU camera to import into Final Cut 10. Plugging into an I MAc that doesn't have a firewire port. The camera is not being recognized by the computer. The camera is set to play tape too. Why is camera not recognized?

I am trying to import from the camera into an I-MAC. I'm told the I-mac does not have the firewire port, but has thunderbolt. Is the only way to get video from the camera via a firewire port? Is someone giving me bad information as to the firewire port not being on the I-MAC? The camera is not being recognized. Thanks in advance.

Apple has moved on from Firewire and the current iMacs (and most MBPs) have Thunderbolt, USB3 and USB2.
There are Firewire toThunderbolt adaptors. Here's one. You also want a four pin to nine pin FW cable to run from your camera to the adaptor.

  • Premiere Pro freezes and causes my computer to crash by re-writing the permissions inside my computer

Premiere Pro re-writes my permissions inside my computer and causes premiere to crash, run slow, restarts my computer in the middle of rendering, and freezes my whole computer.  I have a brand new 2013 Mac Pro with 12core, 16 GB of ram, and 6GB of GPUs.  I will even try and and edit very small HD files from a DSLR whether they are H264 or Pro Res files.  I will do something simple like a distortion correction on those files that are a minute long and it takes it 40 plus minutes to render if it makes it through without crashing the program or the computer.  If I run it for a while without restoring the permissions in the disk utility it makes my whole computer freeze and crash from just about every program.  I have spent many hours on the phone with apple re-installing my operating system thinking that hardware was my issue.  After doing so and installing programs like avid and final cut with Adobe products off the computer it worked perfectly.  Then when I install Adobe products like Premiere Pro on the very first render they will start to have the issues I have explained above.  I have contacted Adobe support and have spent like 20 hours over the last few weeks with them remote logging onto my computer trying to fix the issue.  Towards the end of the last call the guy I was talking too wanted to collect all the information he could to ask the engineers about my problem. He asked me over a dozen times if I had re-installed my operating system and I responded with yes I have each time.  He then changed his tune to the only way he will continue to help me is if I will again re-install my operating system and only put Premiere Pro on the computer just to see if that will work.  I have crazy deadlines and do not have time to go through that process again and again.  He also told me that lots of people with my same computer have the same issues but still wants me to re-install my operating system again.  I explained to him that I am extremely behind with my work (because of this issue) and do not have the time to re-install again since the first re-install didn't work.  I had told him multiple times that I can get around using Adobe products but am huge fan of them(when they work) and would like to find a way to solve the problem.  He then told me that I should go ahead and cancel my subscription and and use that work around since he can not figure it out.  Is there anybody at Adobe that cares about losing my business?  Or anybody out there that may help with the solution of my problem?
    Thanks,
    Cody

WOW!!!! Adobe only cares about there reputation and not their customers!
Response:  I said multiple times in the last thread that I already did a clean install of my operating system.
Response:  I use DaVinci 10 times more than Premiere Pro and never have had one issue with it ever!  Must not be the issue?!?
Response: Changing the read and write permissions was the first thing the guy tried two weeks ago.  I have done a clean install of Mavericks and it did not solve my problem(as I said in my first post).
(Please do not create new posts in response to an earlier post. That post was deleted).
    Hi Cody,
Really sorry you're so upset. I'm only trying to help, though. I suggested that the number one fix is to make sure that your permissions are set to read/write. You did not mention that agents tried this at all in your original response so that's why I mentioned it. Also, I was not completely clear that a clean installation was done as most people install the original OS and then update it, which can cause the issue. Sorry for the confusion.
You did say that you use Resolve all the time with no issues. Resolve can mistakenly install CUDA on your machine which has AMD GPUs. This can cause serious issues. I would remove CUDA from your machine and see if you get better results: Avoid installing NVIDIA CUDA drivers on computers with AMD GPUs
If you want further help, please let me know and I'll do what I can do to assist.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Why does the EEvents message come up every time the computer is opened after being shut off?

Why does the EEvents message come up every time the computer is opened after being shut off?

You need to check the software you run.
Some officially supported and sold Mac versions of software use Wine for porting in some fashion or another.  If some program you are running is spawning these Wine processes, its probably buggy and not shutting down correctly.
How to figure out which are Wine and which are not...?
Well if its a Cider ported game, you just see if there is a Cider logo on the game.
If its Wineskin ported, theres no super easy way to tell, depending on how much its been modified, but you can look inside the app (right click and "Show Package Contents") and go to Contents/MacOS and see if Wineskin executable is in there.  Unless its a very old version of Wineskin it shouldn't be able to hang like that without major issues int he Windows software running in it, and I don't know any any company would release it if it was that buggy.
If its WineBottler Ported, you'll notice quickly because it launches X11 and runs the windows under X11... of course not all X11 apps are Wine, but if you have a program that launches and runs in X11.app then you can look inside it at Contents/MacOS to see if its Wine related.
It could also be Crossover, or a Crossover port of software... you'd have to dig around inside of its app too to see if it looked like one of those.
