Hi

Isight cam is connected perfect - it did run even once for a short while - then Imovie freezed.
Now i do not get any connection to the isight camera or to an external sony hdtv camera. No reaction from the system.
any ideas ? THX

Hello cyberlivia,
And Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Lets begin by resetting the FW circuits: Pull the plug (not just turn off the Mac, but the power cord plugged into the wall), and have all FW deviced disconnected. Let the system sit for 15-30 minutes and then re-boot.
Repair permissions.
Do not connect any other FW devices at the same time. Just the iSight cam. Go to system profiler and let us know if the iSight shows up.
Post back an update and let us know if anything changed.
Respectfully,
Bill Gallagher

  • New Mac Pro vs firewire iSight

I have a mid 2010 Mac pro dual quad, I just got my hands on a new never used firewire iSight. Problem 1 the new mac's have changed the firewire configuration, luckily I had an adapter I bought when I purchased my 2010 macbook pro. problem 2 the camera only worked with iChat. After searching the forums, and trying everything from resetting the PRAM etc... I ran across this old thread
    "http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1954490&start=25&tstart=250"
Thus the camera being still new, but old had the old 1.02 firmware, and needed to be updated to 1.03. Problem 3 Snow leopard does not have the updater, you need 10.5 or older to update the firmware. Lucky for me I had an old Blue iMac in the corner (that was another project), I fired it up and updated the firmware. Now life is good, the camera works with all the apps. The thread is old, but I found it to be the most help. Hats off to EZ Jim & company!

    You're welcome.
    Thanks for the kind words.
To save some searching for readers running Mac OS X 10.4 or later who are trying to manually
upgrade external (Firewire) iSight's Firmware to version 1.0.3, your options are here:
     http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084429&#10084429
    <hr width="85%">
Alternatively, user Malcolm Rayfield has suggested another way to apply the
1.0.3 iSight firmware update *using a Snow Leopard Mac.*
    • Download the updater that was provided for Mac OS X 10.3.7-10.3.9 from
      http://support.apple.com/downloads/iSightUpdater_1_03
    • Double click the iSightUpdater103.dmg if necessary to see the "iSightUpdater103.pkg" .
    • Right-click the iSightUpdater103.pkg icon and click "Show Package Contents."
    • Open the Contents folder and double-click the Archive.pax.gz file.
    • That will unzip an Applications folder that contains a Utilities folder.
    • Inside the Utilities folder is the iSight Updater 1.0.3 folder.
    • Open the the iSight Updater 1.0.3 folder to find the iSight Updater 1.0.3 app.
    • Double clicking the iSight Updater 1.0.3 app will run it.
    • Note that iSight Updater 1.0.3 is a PowerPC application, so your 10.6 Mac will need Rosetta to run it.
If you have not already installed Rosetta, click the Updater and follow your Mac's on-screen instructions.
If you have difficulty or merely do not want to add Rosetta to your Mac, your Apple Tech
can do the firmware for you, or you can use one of the other options described in the link above.

  • How to use built-in iSight & external Firewire iSight simultaneously?

The solutions I've found here and elsewhere, about launching iChat first so it "controls" the internal iSight and will force the firewire iSight to work, does not work. With Quicktime and Photo Booth, I stll get the feed from the internal camera.
iChat has a dropdown menu showing "Built-in iSight" and "iSight". But when "iSight" is selected, the message "Camera is off" appears.
What is the definitive method for using the built-in iSight and the firewire iSight simultaneously?  Thank you.

    Hi,
Several answer to the implied questions.
By Default iChat will choose the camera listed in the iChat menu > Preferences > Video section > camera drop down.
(If there is only one camera this drop down does not appear)
The External iSight may need it's iris opened if it is plugged in but you are being told it is Off.
However also you may benefit from ticking the check box about an External Camera at the bottom of the same pane.
    As for "Simultaneously" http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX.html
Other VJ type apps or that will do VJ type stuff are listed here under Movie Capture.

  • External Firewire iSight under Boot Camp

    Hi All,
I've searched these forums and many others on the issue of getting an external firewire iSight working under Windows via Boot Camp. There seems to be a huge amount of conflicting information...
Does anyone have the definitive response...?
Can it be done...? Are there drivers available...? Can non apple drivers be used...? etc..etc..
    Advice appreciated.
p.s. If there is no driver available, I'm amazed someone hasn't reverse engineered a driver for this yet... If I knew how, I would!!!

    Ted,
Taken from Boot Camp setup guide PDF, Page 16.

  • Firewire iSight & MacBook Pro Heat

I am able to use my firewire iSight with my MacBook Pro, but unlike the internal iSight, there is an awful lot of heat being generated. In a matter of about 30 seconds, the temp of CPU A Temp Diode climbs above 140º F. If I continue with the cam, the temp will rise above 160º.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Is the firewire iSight fully supported on Intel Macs?

    Hello enduserguy
My laptops are not iNtel Macs, but, until you hear from some of the MBP users here,
    (1) if you are using your Mac within the operating limits of MacBook Pro's technical specifications
      (http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html)
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
Relative humidity: 0% to 90% noncondensing
    Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
    AND
    (2) if you are not blocking your MBP's air vents,
your Mac will take care of itself.
There are lots of MacBook Pro Discussions threads about CPU temperature, but I refer you to a couple of highly regarded MBP users, Ricktoronto and Kappy, in http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5210021
Read and follow the instructions in your manual and you should be fine unless your Mac needs repair by an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If you are actually worried about your Mac rather than merely curious, see your Service Provider for a professional check to be certain there is no problem.
If you decide to continue to monitor the numbers, iNtel's spec is 100°C
     (http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLA44)
The 160°F you mention is only 71.1...°C, so things still would seem fine to me.

  • Firewire iSight and 10.4.9 Issues

    Ok,
So we have this Firewire iSight camera. It works fine when plugged into 1 mac. However when we plug it into another mac, there is no power light coming on.
I did plug in an external FW400 drive and it worked great.
I think the issue is that there is iSight driver software on the machine as it never had an iSight before.
I attempted to download some software for it from Apple however it only supports Panther.
Now I know these things shipped with some software. How do I get my hands on some Tiger compatible driver / software for this camera?
    To sum:
The target computer has operational firewire ports
The iSight works on other computers
The iSight MUST work on this particular machine as it is for a user.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Ok.
Now I know these things shipped with some software.
No, they didn't. All the software you need for iSight is built into the OS. You can add applications that can use your iSight to those that Apple bundles with the OS or the Macs it sells (examples, iChat, iMovie, etc.), but all "drivers" are built into OS X.
Restart your Mac with no unnecessary peripherals connected and try the suggestions here:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240
If your iSight still does not work with any app, check for Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight or iChat.
I cannot tell specifically which Mac and OS are giving you difficulty (10.4.9 in the subject line but 10.5 in your System info), but if you are using 10.4.9 on a PPC Mac, you can try the following before seeing your Apple Service Technician:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.

  • Firewire isight camera

    Hi All
I have two firewire isight camera's. I plug both of them into the firewire port of the dual powermac g5 and the macbook pro.
Both cameras green light come on for about five seconds and then go off.
The cameras are not recognised by both machines in ichat, skype, system profiler.
Is this a common problem, or can they be repaired easily.
    Joseph

    Welcome to Discussions, Joseph
Do not be concerned that the little green indicator light atop your iSight illuminates for a few seconds and then goes dark when you first connect your iSight or power on your Mac. Do not be concerned if you hear a soft whir as iSight attempt to focus either. Both these occurrences are normal.
iSight can be picky about sharing your Mac's Firewire, so be sure you have *only one external iSight connected* and *NO other Firewire devices connected* when you test. (You can test the second iSight after you finish checking and have disconnected the first.)
Then test using the suggestions and links here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
It may be necessary to reset your Firewire: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
If none of the applicable troubleshooting suggestions corrects your problem, and if your Mac's System Profiler does not recognize your external iSight (one at a time) as a Firewire device, you will need to decide whether to use a different webcam or to try to get your iSights repaired.
If you want to pursue iSight repair, Apple service is the only option I suggest. There are no user serviceable parts inside iSight. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service on your iSight.
If you have no local access to Apple Service, Apple Support's contact info is here:
      http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html
If you want to pursue service via Apple's website, see: http://www.apple.com/support/isight/service/
(Apple no longer offers the "iSight Accessory Kit, Part Number: M9314G/B" that is mentioned in the link immediately above.) If your local Apple service pro needs parts from the discontinued Kit or some part those listed in the iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions page, the kind people at http://www.synaptech.com may be able to help obtain some iSight parts.

  • Firewire iSight not working with 3rd party software on Leopard

I just installed OSX Leopard and not able to use firewire isight on any program other than ichat. I use 3rd party software for video conferencing (educational setting) and need an external iSight so as to position the camera on larger groups. Anyone have any suggestions?

My external iSight is working fine with QuickTime Pro, iMovie, Photo Booth (v2).
If http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240 does not get things working, and especially if your problem is only with your 3rd party app, contact the developer to see if there are known issues with Leopard.

  • Is there a way to make Firewire iSight work with USB apps?

I am awaiting attival of my new iSight on Monday and I was beginning to wonder if there is some software or a trick you can use to get other chat programs to look at the firewire port instead of USB to enable the programs to see the iSight as a viable cam to use in those programs, or am I limited to using iChat when videoconferencing? I have the iChat for USB software that allows my Piece-Of-S#@% Kensington to work in iChat—making it recognize a USB cam as opposed to looking at the firewire port. Is there an equivalent out there that fools the other chat programs into looking at Firewire instead of USB?

OK, if I read you correctly, these programs such as Yahoo, etc. will look wherever they can to find the cam then? I wondered if they just looked to see if there was something plugged into a USB slot it could identify as a cam and if it didn't see anything there, I wasn't sure if it would look to the firewire port as well. I guess I'll know more when the cam gets here and I try it out, but from what you said they should work as well. 10:30 a.m. estimated arrival time. I'm pretty excited!

  • Connecting a FireWire iSight camera

I want to use an older iSight camera with my new MacBook Pro. The MBP has USB3 but no FireWire input. Can I get an adapter to facilitate this? I know my MBP has a built in camera but I want to have the camera level with my head when I am delivering a lecture. There are limits to what I can expect my audience to put up with in terms of looking up my nose and counting my double chins? Please be specific about any adapters that may be available. Thank you.

    Does your MBP have ThunderBolt?
If so there are adapters from ThunderBolt to FireWire.

  • Using external firewire iSight with iMovie 8

I'm trying to use my old external iSight camera that I purchased for my old powerbook with iMovie, but only the internal iSight camera is showing in the drop down menu.
When I plug in my external iSight camera it will make the lens adjusting noise and the light will come up briefly.
Is there any way I can get that external iSight camera to work with iMovie 8?

    You're welcome, adamrod
... My computer is not recognizing the external iSight camera ... I know the iSight works because I tested it on my old G4.
If you mean that TODAY your iSight works with one of your Macs but not the other, the problem is in your newer Mac, its Firewire or Firewire port connection, or the cable you are using with it.
A properly working iSight will be recognized as a Firewire device as shown in this image:
If your test with your old G4 was long ago, your iSight may have failed since last you used it. In addition to the Apple iSight troubleshooting link I posted earlier, you can use the additional suggestions in this link to test the current functionality of your external iSight:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
One of those suggestions will get a faulty external iSight working unless it is beyond repair.
The only app I know to try it with would be iChat and I don't even see anywhere in the preferences where you could change it from built-in iSight to external.
The camera choices bar will show ONLY if more than one working, iChat-compatible, camera is connected. If the choice does not show, iChat is not recognizing more than one working camera.
Different apps use different methods of camera selection.  In iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one (working) compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. You already know that iMovie 7's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one (working) compatible camera connected, iMovie uses the drop-down menu choice in the camera "Preview" window that I mentioned in my previous post to you.
For apps other than those above, see their Help or other documentation if you need help with selecting which camera the app will use.
When I plug the iSight the light comes on briefly, goes off and then it makes an auto adjusting noise.
This is normal behavior for external iSight.
What does your external iSight do when you plug it in?
The same thing you describe for yours.
Does the light stay on constantly?
Only when the iSight is actually in use. Otherwise, the light goes out on an external iSight that is working correctly but in standby mode.
The light should NOT be illuminated when no apps that can use iSight are running. Likewise, the iSight green lamp should extinguish when iSight is not actually being used by an app. Specific examples:
iChat connected but not in chat: *iSight light OFF*
iChat connected and in video chat: *iSight light ON*
iChat > Video > Video Preview w/iSight shutter open: *iSight light ON*
iMovie open but no capture Preview window open: *iSight light OFF*
iMovie Preview window open (whether capturing or not): *iSight light ON*
Because the light is merely an indicator that iSight is in use rather than any kind of functional necessity, whether the iSight light is on or off has never been of any serious concern to me.
Is there any other app I should try it with?
You can use any you like. There are suggestions in the Apple Troubleshooting link listed earlier, and there are more in this list:

  • OneStep asking for firewire connection-my Sony HDR-SR11 doesn't have firewire port. Help.

The question says it all.  I wanted to use OneStep to move all my home movies to a DVD, but iDVD is asking me to connect via firewire and my video camera-a Sony HDR-SR11-doesn't have a firewire port.  I don't want to go through the extra step of importing into imovie because that will take a ton of time.  Any other suggestions?

Only 2 options that come to mind. The first is to do a one step from a movie (as opposed to a one step from from the camera) within the file menu in iDvd. And yes, you will have to export first from the video editing app (iMovie / FCP) prior to using iDvd's One Step. No way to avoid this when using apple's iLife.
The other option is to use a hardware approach; something like Sony's Dvdirect that requires no PC and burns directly to DvD-R at the touch of one button. Menus aren't as nice as iDvd's but the quality is very good. Try ebay if this option appeals to you. I picked up one for about the same price as iLife software.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Mac Pro Win XP and firewire iSight

I see from searching her that there are no proper drivers for the external iSight. (Ok It is a discontinued product so that is perhaps understandable) ad it can be made to function with a generic firewire web-cam driver.
what is annoying though is that even though Windows has assigned it said generic driver is that every time windows boots it puts up the found new hardware dialogue and I have to manually cancel first it and then the failure pop-up from the sys tray.
So is there a way to tell Windows to stop bugging me with this?
I know I can unplug the iSight but the way my system is configured with 2 external firewire 800 500 gig drives it is not a simple thing due to way they are built into my custom desk

  • Facetime and external firewire iSight camera

    Hi,
I bought Facetime yesterday. When I start it, it says that there is no camera. I turn on my iSight, nothing happens.
I close Facetime, turn on my iSight, then start Facetime: instant crash.
So, basically, Facetime doesn't work for me. Anybody experienced something similar? Any idea?
My external iSight camera is version 1.0.3.
I run OS X 10.6.6 on my Mac Pro 1.1.

Because you "turn on" your iSight, you must be using your external.
Test your external iSight with other apps using the suggestions here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
*If external iSight doesn't work with any app*, try creating a new user account and test there.
*If external iSight doesn't work with anything in any user account*, it may be repairable. If you don't have local access to an Apple Service Technician, other options are shown here:
      http://www.apple.com/support/isight/service/
*If your external iSight is not economically repairable*, you may want to consider a new camera. Several alternatives are included in the discussion here:
      http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
*If your iSight works with apps* (QT, iMovie, iChat, Photo Booth, etc.) *other than FaceTime*, you may merely need to restart the Mac, repair permissions, and reinstall FaceTime.
So, basically, Facetime doesn't work for me. Anybody experienced something similar?
    Not I.
    Any idea? ...
Several. You do not say which display you use. As shown in this image using my Mac Pro and LED Cinema Display:
when your Mac recognizes more than one camera, you can select the one you want by clicking the appropriate item in the FaceTime > Video menu item.
    (1) *If either camera works*, your FaceTime software is working.
    (2) *If you have only one webcam that can connect to your Mac Pro*, try resetting the FaceTime preferences. If you need help, here is how:
     • Restart Mac
     • Navigate to the "com.apple.FaceTime.plist" file in your Home ( ) > Library > Preferences folder.
(Be sure you are in the "Home" Folder preferences folder, not your System's.)
     • Move the "com.apple.FaceTime.plist" file to Trash
     • Connect external iSight, launch FaceTime, and test again.
    (3) *If the FaceTime problem persists,* apply the 10.6.6 Combo Update as follows:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test FaceTime again
(• Turn Time Machine on again when you are satisfied that the Combo update worked.)
    (4) *If FaceTime still does not work on your Mac Pro*, test with your other Mac. Leave external iSight disconnected from your MacBook Pro and test FaceTime using its inbuilt iSight. If FaceTime works on your MBP with its inbuilt iSight, you know that the software you downloaded is good.
    (5) *If you’re new FaceTime doesn't work with either of your Macs*, click "Support" in the App Store Quick Links (upper right quadrant) section and ask if you should download another copy to test whether the one you have is bad.
