Firewire, kernal, Maxtor External Drive

I know this discussion happend a while ago, and is closed, this is the link:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3453370&#3453370
The problem is it didn't resolve anything for me, I didn't understand the "chip" answers.
I wrote down what the kernel said - it's about "Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependiencies): com.maxtor.iokit.10FireWireFamily(2.25).... " and it goes on.
Is this telling me to go to the Maxtor site and download the module firewire family? This kernel doesn't happen with usb, but I really prefer the speed with the firewire.
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Just in case there are others out there with this problem, I thought I should post this.
I found a driver download at Seagate, here is the link:

It's lengthy so you'll need to copy and paste the url.
Thus far the external is mounted with the firewire, so I hope it continues to work.

  • Computer won't startup after Tiger install with Maxtor external drive

I just upgraded to Tiger on my G4 Dual 450. The computer will not startup with my Maxtor 200 MB external hard drive connected. When it is connected I get a message to restart my computer. The computer starts up and runs with no problems when the Maxtor is not connected. When I connect the Maxtor after the computer is started I get a gray screen to restart my computer. I can connect the Maxtor to another G4 in my office with no problems. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi, platteau1. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "When it is connected I get a message to restart my computer."You are describing the following message:
    That indicates a kernel panic.
    1. First, I suggest you contact Maxtor as there may be a problem with the external drive or it may require a firmware update.
    2. Next, see my "General FireWire troubleshooting" FAQ for advice that may help you troubleshoot the FireWire drive. It may be as simple as a bad FireWire cable or FireWire port on your Mac.
    3. Finally, see also my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.

  • Simple Maxtor External Drive Question

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can share.
I just bought and setup a Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus External Drive. I have it all set up to work with TM and everything seems to be fine.
My question is -- should I leave the drive on 24/7 or shut it off? My Mac is normally off all day while I'm at work. I don't want to burn the drive out, but I don't really see an on/off switch on it...
    Any ideas?

I have one left over from my PC days and was wondering if I could use it with Time Machine.
Yes, you can, as long as you partition it with GUID or APM partition type. Instructions for them are in several places, for example
http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2006/08/16.1.shtml - either USB or firewire drive will work for Time Machine (when partitioning, give it a short simple name with no spaces, special characters etc).

  • Maxtor External Drive Won't Mount!

    Here is my problem.
We got a Maxtor One Touch III 1 TB external drive. I loaded about 850 GB of media onto it, passed it off to my partner to continue to edit our video project. Everything was running fine on my macbook pro 2.2 core duo. He edited for a day on his macbook 1.83 core duo. Said everything was fine.
That night he shut the machine down without unmounting the drive. He said the drive kept blinking so he shut it off. In the morning he tried to connect the drive to a g4 tower running 10.3.9. (I never realized he was so tech-vapid). He said the drive wouldn't mount. Then he moved it back to his macbook. Still wouldn't mount. Now it won't mount on my macbook or any machine. He then wonderfully told me he once had the same problem with a G-Drive 500 GB external. Wouldn't mount after switching it to his g4 and back. G-Tech told him the drive was dead so he sent it back. Maxtor told us this drive is dead, but I just think it sounds fishy.
It is still spinning, but there is no light on. Have tried every different kind of connection and updated drivers, same result. A friend said if it got unintentionally unmounted it might take the OS hours to fix it up because it's a RAID 0, suggested leaving it connected for a few hours and see what happens, but that happened once with my G-RAID and it didn't need time to fix itself. I am stupid for buying a maxtor it seems, but it doesn't change my dilemma.
    Someone help.

Check the /Volumes/ folder for a broken alias to the disk. The folder is invisible so you need to use the "Go" menu to open it.

  • FireWire issues with external drive in Yosemite

I have just upgraded to OS X Yosemite, and I have an annoying problem with my 500GB FireWire external drive (which I use for Time Machine backups).
Basically, after updating the drive won't show up anymore, neither in the Finder nor in the Disk Utility. I also tried the "diskutil list" command in the Terminal, but it is nowhere to be found. Note that the drive does indeed receive power from the port - it spins - and when I look into System Report --> Hardware --> FireWire it does show up there (but I can't mount it). Furthermore, if I use a USB cable to connect the drive everything works fine, so the disk itself seems to be OK.
The funny thing is that if I boot with the drive plugged in the FireWire port the system mounts it normally. But as soon as I eject the drive, I am unable to mount it again (unless I switch to the USB cable, as mentioned above).
Prior to the update, everything worked flawlessly. For now, I backed up my Mac via USB 2.0, but it's very slow and I definitely don't want to resort to this workaround everytime. And it goes without saying that I don't like having issues with my primary backup device in general.
I already did all the usual troubleshooting (rebooting, resetting NVRAM and SMC, ...), but the problem still persists.
    Any suggestion?

I had the same issue on a rMBP 13'', brand new 2015 March.
Two thunderbolt adapter connected: one for ethernet, one for firewire Lacie drive.
    and...
even after taking the ext. Firewire on the Spotlight exclude list, and also after disabling sleeping hard drives, I always got the issue.
Until I realized that touching the laptop or moving the screen was immediately leading to disconnection.
Then I exchanged the thunderbolt connectors, and now it is stable and does not disconnect again.
??? Maybe one of the ports is more "delicate" than the other?
    Big hardware weakness here...

  • IMac G5 and firewire 800 between external drives?

I have a iMac G5 running 10.4.7 which has two firewire 400 ports.
One FW400 port has a Seagate external drive connected, and an iSight is connected to this drives second FW port.
The second FW400 port has a LaCie 250Gb triple interface drive, which has one USB, one FW400, and two FW800 ports.
I'm looking to add a third firewire drive, a duplicate of the LaCie.
I am wondering (before I buy the new drive) if I can connect the new LaCie drive to my existing LaCie with a FW800 cable and have my iMac recognize it.
I'd rather not buy a firewire hub (if such a thing exists) if I can get all three drives and the iSight to mount simultaneously without it.

It did work - chaining the external drives together via FW800, and then connecting one to the iMac via FW400.

It is not advisable to use an external hard drive to load applications on. External hard drives are primarily backup data sources. If you need more space internally you have several hard drive bays, and the option to add a Sonnet ATA card which supports larger than 120 GB hard drive partitions on internal hard drives.

  • Firewire 800 + many external drives

    Hi there,
I have 3 existing WD external drievs running from my Firewire 800 port. They are currently daisy chained and work fine.
I bought another one today, and starting to feel there might be a problem if I was to plug another drive in of a total 4.
Can someone tell me what is the limit to this and if there is any danger of short circuiting or losing data if I added more drives?
    Thanks
    C

    Hi The Mac Clam,
FireWire can technically support up to 63 devices in a daisy chain but I can't imagine you'd get any sort of reasonable data throughput at that range. With that being said, 4 will absolutely work with the understanding that the more you keep adding on the overall data throughput will being degrade.

  • Do I need to load Maxtor External Drive software?

I just bought a Maxtor OneTouch III external hard drive. Is it really necessary to load the accompanying software? Can't I just connect the drive only?

No need to install it. It is likely just Windows software anyway.
If it does come with Mac software on the disk, it is probably the Retrospect Express backup software. You can try it, but a lot of people here - including myself - use SuperDuper instead.

  • Using a ethernet external Maxtor Hard Drive (Network Attached Storage)

Does anyone know if I can use a NAS (Network Attached Storage - in this case a 1 Tb Maxtor external drive with ethernet connection) and have my iMac G5 and Macbook backup to this drive on the same ethernet segment using Time Machine ? (both computers and the Hard drive will be connected through a router).
    cheers
    Steve

This used to be a suggestion often given in this forum when TM was new - but you rarely see it now. I've read posts for users who found the suggestion worked, but in time they would report that the methods eventually failed. I don't know whether anyone has had long term success.
One problem with using a NAS, you may not be able to do a full restore using the install disk when the TM backup is on a NAS. I use a Mac Mini as a file server and its external disks are used as TM destination drives for other macs in the house. This works and is supported by Apple since the server runs Leopard (the only way to provide a backup over a LAN, not including the new Apple Time Capsule). However, when doing a full restore, I have to detach the drive that is on the Mini and attach it to the source mac. Having done full restores several times, I was unable to access the LAN based mac to get to the TM backup. It has to be directly attached. So, if your NAS can't be attached or if it's not the right format (and NAS devices are rarely formatted HFS+), you won't be able to full restore, which is an important consideration.

  • How can I install Tiger on external drive

I have a maxtor external drive and I am trying to install tiger onto it but it is not installing properly. I have a imac g5 and I have the drive connected to it. It allows me to perform the install but then when I use it as the boot disk it goes through all the process and it goes to unix with panic...something about hanging here.
    Thanks
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Harrison,
is this a firewire drive? Be aware that you cannot boot from a USB drive: Don't start up from an external USB device.
Also make sure your drive's firmware is up to date.

  • Why doesn't my iMac see my external drive?

I have an iMac 20" 2.16 Core 2 Duo.  The machine is operating fine.  That's not the issue.  I am trying to plug into it a 1TB Maxtor external drive that I used on my G4.  The problem is the external does not show up on my iMac.  I have tried using disk utility, but it doesn't see the drive.  Here's the kicker.  When I do System Profiler, it is seeing that the external drive is there.  I have tried it through both the Maxtor's firewire and USB connections.  In either connection, the System Profiler sees the drive. My question is how can I access it?

  • Maxtor External HD 500GB not recognised anymore ; repair

My iMac doesn't recognise the external HD anymore. It appears in disk utility but all buttons are clicked out. I can't verify or repair it. Can anyone give advice a to how to retrieve the data from the disk. Very many thanks.

So you're experiencing the same problem with both your MacBook Pro and your iMac? As you stated it doesn't work "anymore", I take that to mean that it did work at some point.
Is there any chance you can provide the model or specific name of your external drive? I think Maxtor external drives are usually some generation of OneTouch. Also, let us know how you are connecting to the drive (USB or Firewire).
Do you happen to have access to a PC that you can connect it to? If you do, try that. Just a WARNING... if you try to connect it to a PC and it is formatted for a Mac, the PC will say it doesn't recognize the drive and ask if you want to format it... DON'T say yes! We really just want to see if the PC sees it. If it does, you can just disconnect it.

  • TC with Maxtor External HD

Hey, I have a 1TB TC with a Maxtor OneTouch III. The TC works perfectly as a router and backs up my computer fine. I plugged the OneTouch into the USB port on the TC, and it shows up on my computer, but it won't let me access the folder? Anyone know the correct way to set this up?
