FireWire / MacBook Pro / External 7200 rpm Drive / External Power Supply / Daisychaining

I would like to use FireWire from my MacBook Pro to an external 7200 rpm drive (Fantom GreenDrive Quad with FireWire capability) that uses an external power supply.  Are there any issues with using the external power supply?  I read in an archived Mac forum regarding Thunderbolt that there might be (for Thunderbolt, which I'm not using).  The archived info wasn't entirely clear to me as to whether it meant not to power up (turn on or plug in) an external power supply for a daisychained device while the MacBook was on or the daisychain had devices in use, say, or whether it meant don't use (daisychain) any devices that use external power supplies.
Once that question is resolved (about FireWire relative to the external power supply for the external hard drive), my next question is, Can I safely daisychain also? If so, what protocol would I use for that, relative to the power supply for each daisychained hard drive?

I have had no issues using daisychained FireWire 800 external drives with leaving the drives turned on, power supplies on, and restarting my MBP.  The MBP starts up and sees the drives and runs fine.

  • Macbook Pro 13" & 7200 RPM Drives

    Hi,
I have spent the last 4 hours reading people reviews saying that both the Seagate Momentus and WD Scorpio Black both make the aluminium Macbook Pro vibrate while others say its quiet as a mouse.
I would like to get some real life reviews and recommendations on both drives in a 13" Macbook Pro.
    Thanks
    Gavin

    Hi gavjones;
If you want to talk to MBP users why did you post in the Leopard forum. Most of the MBP users hang out in the MBP forum. I would suggest you repost over there instead.

  • New MacBook Pro 13" OK to drive external Monitor?

My 5 year old Core duo-2 MBP-13" drives a 23" external LG Flat Screen monitor perfectly.  But I am hearing that the latest MBP-13" (including the fastest build-your-own model) has some issues with an external monitor - it may stutter of be slow.
Well I certainly can't spend $2500 for a brand-new high-speed i7 MBP only to find that it doesn't perform as well as my 2010 model when it comes to external monitors--- I use an external 80% of the time!!
Anyone heard anything about this -- or better yet - anyone with the most recent MBP-13" using an external monitor?  If so – could you let me know how it is working for you in this (and any other) aspect?
Thanks!  Might hold out for a GOLD MBP (will they offer one??) - but would like to make a move soon---

  • 7200 RPM drives in the Macbook Pro...

Does the Macbook Pro with a 7200 RPM HD have any physical differences when compared to the 5400 RPM version of the computer? Specifically, I am looking for any differences related to cooling. For example, a different hard drive mount (with heat sinks) or an additional fan etc.
    Thanks!

No. Externally, they are the same, and no other design features differ. The difference in heat generated by the 7200 rpm vs the 5400 rpm is minor, and well within the cooling capacity of the MBP (if you use something like iStat Pro, you'll be able to see the HDD temp, and note that it's always much cooler than the CPU/GPU chips, even with a 7200 rpm drive, which I have).

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive?

How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive? I'm working on transferring my music from our home computer to my new laptop and I already got all my music onto the hard drive but now, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't recognize it. There isn't an icon that pops up and nothing happens at all. The blue light on the hard drive that indicates that it knows it is plugged into something comes up but that's about it. Someone told me I might have to "format" it but I don't know what that means and I don't know how to do it. I just want to get my music from the hard drive to my laptop so please help!

I don't know about your first question... I went to finder, preferences, then general but I didn't see anything for the hard drive.
Huh, in the Finder menu, Preferences, you will see this:
Nope, disk utility cannot see it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it still won't recognize it.puter that's a Mac...
If DU cannot see it then the preferences is just an academic exercise.
If this is a USB drive then as mentioned above you may need a powered USB hub since there may not be enough power from the USB to run the drive.  What else do you have plugged into the USB ports?  If there's some stuff you can unplug it then do it and see if your drive mounts.
What do you mean from a Windows machine? It's a Toshiba hard drive and I put my music on it from my home computer that's a Mac...
Which is all I wanted to know, i.e., whether the drive came from a Winows machine.  So it's been formatted and created on a mac.  Therefore it should mount on this other mac machine.  So it most likely is a power problem.

WE know Disk Warrior is more reliable, hence more useful, and should be in any disk mechanics toolchest.
For the record, I don't know anything of the kind. I have yet to see evidence that Disk Warrior is useful at all.
What I do know is that you seem to take every opportunity you get to promote it in these forums. Do you work for Alsoft?
Let me be a little more explicit. My opinion is that Disk Warrior is a waste of money if one has backups. If a journaled HFS directory is so badly corrupted that it can't be repaired by Disk Utility, then the volume should be reformatted and restored from backup, which has the same effect as running DW, but is probably faster and doesn't cost $99.

  • Which 200 gb 7200 rpm drive is in your new MacBook Pro?

I'm planning on getting the new MacBook Pro 2.4 ghz model. I will upgrade to a 7200 rpm drive. I'm trying to find out which brand of hard drive will be installed, because Apple is unable to tell me which brand they will install. Although it's only about $92 to upgrade the drive, however, I would prefer to know if they are installing a 200 gb Hitachi Travelstar (my preference), Seagate, or other brand. If you got a 7200 drive, which one do you have?

Well, my issue has been resolved. It turns out that the Logitech keyboard (I am using the mouse) that I gave to my son (he had the same set I do but his keyboard died) to use is picking up the signal from the little receiver up here next to my laptop! I called Apple 3 times about this issue and when I finally figured out that what my son typed and did on his Dell running Linux downstairs, was coming through to my computer! Wow! How weird is that? It was my old keyboard and it was still communicating with the receiver up here. So it was nothing to do with anything major. No hard drive issues. I am a happy girl again! Judy

  • Macbook Pro won't boot with external HDD plugged

I have a weird problem. My late 2008 Macbook Pro won't start with external HDD plugged either FW or USB... The screen stays white until I unplug it and then the Apple logo is there.
Anyone know any solution for this? Or anyone have the same problem

yeah I had the exact same issue with one of my 750GB externals too. I just left it for a while (about an hour or so) and it was fine..
I believe its so slow because the system is indexing the drive, which can be a very slow process if the drive is big, has a complex folder-hierarchy, and/or is fragmented.
Does the hard-drive appear quite quickly in Finder once OS X has started up? if its slow it may confirm what I've just said.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? shutdown the machine, hit the power button then hold down the option and command keys with your left hand, while holding them down with your right hand use your pinky to hold the 'P' key and index finger to hold down the 'R' key. hold them down until you hear the 'bong' sound twice then release the keys and let the machine bootup.
Also try resetting the SMC. Shut the machine down. Hold down the 'shiftctrloption' keys with your left hand, right hand hold down the power button for 10 seconds then release all. Power up the machine as normal.
Hope this helps. Pls update us and let us know if that helps!

This thread is a continuation of [MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External)|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1478474]. The thread was getting too long and some browsers were timing out.
    Thank you,
    Apple Discussions Staff

I brought mine into the Apple Store last night. I had not left it for service last time as I had not cleared it of some confidential client data. This time, I encountered a much more knowledgeable Genius who seemed to have heard of the Nvidia problem.
So, my MBPro is on its way to the depot. It will apparently be $310 total, flat fee, supposedly ready within a week.
I do expect Apple will do the right thing eventually and extend warranties for the defective Nvidia subsystem. However, I can't wait until they do. I need my Macbook Pro to be functional.
    Again, my strong advice...
*At the first hint you are getting this problem, turn on screen sharing.*
If you have this specific Nvidia problem, you will still be able to access the machine remotely, which can be incredibly valuable in terms of saving data before you send it for repair. When you hand it over, you will initial a statement saying you have backed up your data and Apple is not responsible if the machine is wiped during repairs. Set up screen sharing so you can operate the machine during the Nvidia failure.

  • Is it possible to install a 7200 rpm drive into a Macbook running a 5400?

Is it possible to install a 7200 rpm drive into a Macbook running a 5400 rpm drive? And if so does anyone know what brand of drive is stock in the Macbook? What is a good brand? Seagate? Hitachi? Western?

And if so does anyone know what brand of drive is stock in the Macbook?
The 250GB drive in my new aluminum MacBook was a Fujitsu. I replaced it with a 500GB Samsung since I was more interested in space than speed.
