FireWire message

I wonder, why might my Nano be telling me that "FireWire connections are not supported" and to "connect the USB cable provided" when, as I only own one iPod, it is already connected with the provided USB cable and happily playing songs through iTunes?
Answers on the back of a post card.

Thanks for your suggestions, but they had all occurred to me, and I know that a dock connector is used for connecting to odd devices, but why? When all I need to connect to a stereo is the 3.5mm jack? Who in their right mind uses their iPod connected to a TV? With TVs getting bigger and high definition starting to take off who is going to use the compressed data on an iPod to drive it?
We're getting into the realms of questioning Apple's decisions now and I'll get my posts dumped, again.
What I was hoping someone might know was:
Is the FireWire confusion a common issue?
And:
Was it something to do with the software, or could it be confused by a simple mechanical fault such as a bent pin or some other short that would not affect the normal operation of the iPod?
I carry my iPod around in my pocket (I assume most people do, there not being enough loonies in the world to have bought a lanyard to wear it round their neck or an elasticated band to wear it round their arm, or to synch it with their shoes, etc.....) and so the socket on the bottom fills up with fluff and other debris which may have been interfering with the connections.

I have a 4GB Nano. Haven't had a single problem with it until yesterday.
I've been recharging using the adapter but yesterday I added some new songs to Itunes and plugged in the Nano to add the songs. It updated (I think). Now I can't turn the durned thing off and I have a constant message on the nano stating that it can't be updated with a firewire connection (I don't even have firewire!).
I've already tried the 5R's except for the trying a different cable and reformatting several times, I've tried using a different usb port but I'm still getting the same thing. The computer and Itunes recognize the nano. Should I just give up and contact Apple for a repair or am I missing something?
I'm getting very frustrated and a frustrated redhead is not a good thing.

    Just an update.......
I fixed the problem. I deleted the new updater file from my computer and reinstalled the ipod setup file from the disc that came with my nano.
I then formatted the nano thru windows and got the firewire message to disappear. I opened up Itunes and allowed it to update the nano.
I no longer have a firewire message and the nano can be turned off. It plays just fine and everything else seems to be in good working order. Hope this helps anyone else with this problem.

  • IPod thinks USB is firewire??

I've got a 5G ipod which was originally used on a Mac. I've got a Monster car charger/FM transmitter, and whenever the ipod is plugged into it, it says that firewire transfers are not supported. I didn't think much of it, because it didn't matter. Now, I have plugged the ipod into a PC with a USB cable, and the ipod is displaying the no firewire message. The ipod does not appear in itunes either. What's going on here?

This is the identical problem here, and I believe it's a problem absent of any operating system (Mac or Windows). By just plugging a cable into the iPod I get the error telling me that it thinks my USB cable is a firewire cable, and that firewire's not supported. This is whether I plug into either of two external adapters for power I own or my computer. Before it ever gets to an OS, the iPod itself spits out the error. Jiggling the cord helps, but it doesn't stay seated and if it gets touched... lookout.
It's the unit - the connector I suspect, but I don't know if it's on the cord or the iPod itself.

  • FireWire instead of USB

Is there a way to make my USB 5G Pod (30g video) support a FireWire connection instead?

Thierry you can add a USB 2.0 Cardbus card for a small
cost and have USB 2.0. It will not be powered so get
a combined FW/USB cable , use the FW to charge it and
the USB to sync it. You will get a "no firewire"
message but you can dismiss that and it will work
    fine.
Thanks for proposing the worthiest alternative.
But I probably won't do that, and rather move all my music and videos to my WinXP64 laptop, which has USB2.
Am I becoming a reverse switcher because of that ? Probably, and other things.

  • Anyone knows if i-deck from Monitor Audio produces problems to the battery?

Hi, I got an ipod nano 4th generation and, when connected to Monitor Audio i-deck ipod shows a message saying "firewire battery charge is not possible" or something like that, what I am wondering is if ipod battery could have problems because of this when connected to i-deck to listen to it...
    THANKS!
ps. I also have a fifth gen. classic ipod which do charges its battery on the i-deck... go figure!

Ahh, a very common problem. The reason the fourth gen nano displays the "cannot charge through firewire" message is just that. All the other models of iPods charge through a firewire connection and the new fourth generation nano does not charge through a firewire connection.

  • My ipod will not turn off please help???

Everything works on my ipod, but it will not turn off. It will play and pause but not turn off.

I too have had this problem. In fact it seems to be a fairly common problem, suggesting that it is an unaddressed bug.
    Here's what you can try:
    1. Reset your iPod by holding down the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously for 5-10 seconds. After your iPod reboots, see if it will turn off. If not:
    2. Restore your iPod using iPod Updater, which you can download from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ . Restoring your iPod will delete all songs, pictures etc and reload the iPod's operating system. If that doesn't fix it, you can:
    3. Try a work-around. Can you turn it off using the Sleep menu option? If you don't see that in the main iPod menu, go to Settings/Main Menu and turn on the Sleep menu option. This didn't work for me, but others have een able to turn their Nanos off this way.
If none of these things work, your only option is to have Apple replace you iPod. You can do this by contacting Apple support, or by going to the Genius Bar at an Apple retail store.
Several people (including me) have seen the not-turning-off problem in conjunction with the Nano frequently showing a message saying that firewire connections are not supported. In my case my Nano became unusable because the firewire message would pop up so often that I couldn't navigate through the menus to get it to play anything. I took my Nano to an Apple store and the Genius Bar guy replaced it on the spot. Unfortunately the replacement also doesn't work (headphone jack doesn't work so I can't hear any music) so I will have to go back again, but don't let my run of bad luck prevent you from getting a replacement.

  • Error message: "FireWire connections are not supported.  To transfer songs"

I recently purchased a Monster iCarPlay to play my ipod in my car. I have had no problems until recently. Upon disconnecting my ipod from the iCarPlay wire, I the following message popped up: "FireWire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided." It also prompts me to click the center button to dismiss the message. However, I'vd followed these instructions, and the message does not go away. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this problem? Or is it anything to worry about?

That is the message you see when you attach a 5th gen iPod to a computer using FIREWIRE. so... i suspect that for some reason, the 3rd party iCarPlay device must be confusing the iPod into thinking it is being docked or attached to a data line of some type and not simply charging.
As for the sudden occurrence of the message, it does seem strange however, keep in mind that you are using a 3rd party device that may not be supported or endorsed by Apple at all.

  • Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter & New Network Interface Message

I am using the new Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter. Why is it that every time I use it, I get the following message:
"A new network interface has been detected. The Thunderbolt FireWire Slot 2 network interface has not been set up. To set up this interface, use network preferences."
All I want to do is mount external hard drives that don't have Thunderbolt ports to my iMac, via Thunderbolt because I am using the iMac's single Firewire port for something else. The drives do successfully mount, but why do I keep getting this message whenever I connect them again?

I have no doubt what you say to do would get rid of the message for me. However, both myself and an Apple Store employee think it is odd that the message comes up in the first place. We're both curious about it, and he's going to look into it.
We tested it on a computer at the store, and found that it happens on Lion too.

  • Error message -36 when copying large  files from Firewire drive

I have kept several large audio files as backup on an external LaCie Firewire drive. When trying to copying them back, almost all of them starts to copy, then stops and (after a minute or so) report error message -36.
I have run both Apple's Disktools and the latest Diskwarrior, but no errors are reported. I gues the audio files must have become corrupted... What do you suggest that I do? The contain valuable audio information that I really don't want to get lost.

  • Is dodgy firewire connection to blame for 'restart' message.

I have been getting the 'you need to restart your computer...' message in the black box, when uploading some footage to IMovie.
I need to know if it could be a software problem, the actual firewire, or like I think- the following problem:
For a while, 2 of the the pins inside the DV firewire connection point on the camcorder (Panasonic Mini-DV, about 5 years old). have been broken off to about half way. It normally works anyway but this time, after a few minutes, IMovie lost the connection. I took the cable out and put it back in- which normally does the trick, but then got the 'restart' message.
Is my computer just freaking out at the corrupt connection.
Need to know what I need to fix.
    Cheers.

It's very likely that it's your camcorder is at fault. What you're experiencing is a Kernel Panic and most KP's happen because of hardware.
I'm not sure whether or not repairing the connection in a 5yr. old camcorder is feasible due to cost or lack of parts but it might be something to check out.

  • I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my imac to macbook. Using either a firewire or network, as I'm waiting to select items to migrate, I receive an error message that "the application quit unexpectedly". My imac is newer.

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

  • I firewired I-tunes music from crashed I-mac to a new I-mac. Then tried to sync my I-pod w/ the new computer and got messages "I-pod cannot be synced". Also, "the disc could not be read from or written to- you don't have the privilege to make changes"

I firewired my i-tunes library from my old computer to a used I-mac which I bought. All purchased songs & playlists
were succesfully transferred. When I tried to sync my empty I-pod to the used I-mac I received these messages.
              - I-pod cannot be synced
              - The disc could not be read from or written to
              - You dont have the priveledge to make changes.
This is all my music legally downloaded and purchased from I-tunes. How to I circumvent this barrier?

  • Firewire error message

firewire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the usb cable provided.
This error repeatedly pops up on my ipod screen. I am not using a firewire cable in any way. This error pops up when i am charging and when i'm not. I have restored my ipod multiple times and this error keeps popping up. This message will not stop popping up. When i press the center it will jsy pop back up and it takes 20-40 times to get the message to go away for even a second. When i try to turn my ipod off the message pops right back up and turns it back on. So i could find my battery drained because of this.

You probably have a damaged cable or the connector in the bottom of the iPod. Check both sides of the cable and the bottom of the iPod carefully for pins hat are bent over and touching other pins. A magnifying glass and a bright light will help. Certain pins, if shorted to other pins will fool the ipod into thinking you are trying to connect with a Firewire cable.

  • Firewire Device unknown message - Macbook Air

    Hi,
So I have an old Canon Digital Camcorder and I want to grab all the old movies of the kids, so I purchased a Thunderbolt/Firewire adaptor from Apple, plugged it into a 9pin to FW800 cable and powered everthing up, opened iMovie and no camera appeared, checked Finder and nothing.
So I checked System Information and under Firewire devices, I see the message "Device Unknown".
So I started searching the web for drivers and nothing is coming up, so I am wondering what I can do ?
I don't want to go back to my old IBM X32 thinkpad as it struggles to capture the data stream.
    Thanks
    Carl.

  • FIREWIRE connections message

    Hi!
I'm not sure which iPod generation I have...I just bought it a few months ago.
I've never had any problem synching my iPod, but when I just plugged it in I got this message:
"FireWire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided."
I'm using the same cable I've always used. The only different thing I can think of is that I installed Leopard. But I'm pretty sure I've synched my iPod since then and haven't had a problem.
    Suggestions?! Thanks so much...
    Roma

Okay, I'm an idiot, so I'll respond to my own posted message.
I WAS using the wrong USP cable. Good grief!
