Firewire missing

Hello everybody,
I'm a new Mac and FCP user, i have my new mac for about 2 weeks now and very happy with it( it's another world) but i have some problems on FCP capturing footage from my Canon XM2 pal camera, on log and capture when i set everything up to capture i get ' no connection' and when i try too change mine audio/video setup 'video playback' says: (missing)firewire pal 720x576. Some help.....
Please help??????? !!!!
greetings

That's the disadvantage of the iMac -it can't be expanded.
You didn't mention if you are trying to capture to an external drive or the internal.
That does not matter for now, lets make sure FCP is set up correctly...
Final Cut Pro should not be running.
Connect the FireWire cable to your computer. Connect the other end to the camera and attach the power supply. Turn the camera on. Make sure there's a tape in it. Run it forward a little until you see a picture.
The next instructions refer to menu commands in English. If your computer is set up to use Dutch, you can change it to English temporarily. Open System Preferences > International > Language and drag English to the top of the list. Drag Dutch to the top of the list when you are finished with this, to revert back to that language.
Go to the Apple icon at the top left of you screen and click on "About This Mac".
Click on "More Info" in the lower part of the window that just popped up.
You are now in System Profiler. Click on FireWire in the left column. Do you see your camera listed on the right? If not, try a different FireWire cable. If your camera is listed, proceed as follows:
Start Final Cut Pro. Go to the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup and choose DV PAL from the list.
Choose the DV PAL Anamorphic setting if your footage was shot in 16:9. Click OK.
Menu Bar again: Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset. Click OK.
Go to Log & Capture. Can you see and control your camera now?

    Remove QuickTime receipts:
    Go to /Library/Receipts/
    Locate the QuickTime receipts files.
Select all QuickTime receipts that have version numbers as part of their names (but don't select the other QuickTime receipts). Here's an example of what they look like (you may have different receipts on your computer):
Drag the selected receipts to the Trash.
Download and install the latest version of QuickTime for Mac OS X.

  • Can't share internet connection via firewire - missing something obvious?

I have my G4 933 connected via ethernet to a Dynalink RTA100+ DSL modem/router. Would like to share this internet connection with anther G4 450 (time warp here) over firewire until I sort a proper router... both are running on 10.4.11
I connected the computers with firewire cable and configured the firewire ports Manually (as I couldn't get DHCP to populate them in the right range).
Tried initially turning on Personal File and Web Sharing on each, but couldn't get a Ping to go through g4 to g4, even though I can see each firewire port's ip in each other's routing table info...
Also turned on Internet Sharing over Firewire port from Ethernet but G4 450 can't connect.
Read somewhere that you can't do both, so have reverted to just trying to get the Internet Sharing working (as that's all the kids really want on their computer!)
Dug around in the modem for ages tried it in Bridge mode, couldn't connect either computer to internet then so have gone back to normal PPP settings with DHCP.

    Hi Rose,
You can't Manually set the IPs for Internet Sharing according to Apple, (I've done it, but not consistently),
You do want the G4/450 to use DHCP, the G4/933 will likely end up handing out an IP to the 450 of 192.168.2.4, (one higher in the 3rd & 4th place, and wont work if the 933 started out as x.x.2.x), but it must do it itself to keep track of NAT within itself.
True you can't do both File & Internet Sharing at once.
On the G4/933, en0/Ethernet needs to be dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations. On the G4/450, fw0/Firewire needs to be dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
Internet Sharing needs to be OFF on the 450 & rebooted if it was ON.
As far as the Setting not sticking, there may be more, but Trash these two files on the 933 then Reboot...

  • Firewire Missing with 10.4.9 update

I can't communicate with any of my Firewire peripherals (M-Audio Ozonic), Epson scanner, Epson R800 printer, AcomData external drive, etc. Checked under "About this Mac", clicked on "More Info" and then clicked on "FireWire" under the Hardware component of the System Profiler. All that shows up is: Firewire Bus: and the page is blank.
Clicking on "USB "shows lots of info including the connected printer, scanner, mouse, hub, etc.
I have connected the previously mentioned items via USB 2 cables and am able to use them, except for the M-Audio Ozonic which connects only via FireWire (a MIDI interface music keyboard), and it's what I use 90% of the time. Presently, I'm stuck with the problem of no FireWire communication, and only since I downloaded the 10.4.9 security update. Anyone else? Is there a solution?

I believe a diagnostics disc is among the discs that came with the computer. Boot from the diagnostics disc and run the extended diagnostics to find out if there be a report of defective Firewire ports.
If not then it's possible your upgrade to 10.4.9 was not done successfully.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now download the 10.4.9 Combo (PPC) Update and re-apply the update using the combo updater.

  • [missing] DV Firewire

I am just now trying to hookup a firewire deck to load and edit on my Powerbook. I am using the JVC dv3000 deck. I can not see or hear anything in Final Cut 4.5 but I can control the deck. If I go to iMovie, I can see and hear the video as well as control the deck. I'm guessing this would be solved by changing the settings, but can't find anything that seems to work.
Another note - in the log & capture window, the preview is "disabled" & when I go to the capture settings (set to DV) it says that the DV codec? is [missing].
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    OK - here's a list of stuff
    QuickTime 7.11
    Mac OS X 10.4.6
Powerbook 1.5 GHz Power PC 4, 512 mb sdram

I can see and hear the video from the JVC deck when in iMovie... but no audio or video in Final Cut. I have tried using the Firewire NTSC setting in Final Cut (template) and then a duplicate of that setting using the Firewire NTSC basic setting. I have the capture/input set to DV NTSC 48 kHz. The capture window has bars and "preview disabled' text across the bars.
In the video/audio settings, capture preset is DV NTSC 48 kHz. Device Control Preset is set to Firewire NTSC copy (using the firewire basic setting.) Video playback is set to none and the audio playback is set to built-in audio.
Under the Capture window (set to DV NTSC 48 kHz) has this warning :

  • [Missing] Apple FireWire Pal

"FCP can't find the missing Apple firewire Pal driver, reinstall Quicktime 7"
Is this true?or is there any other solution?

Yes... unfortunatly that is probably the problem. A few weeks ago (or months! i can't remember... time flies when you're having fun!) there was a surge of panic as everyone experienced connection issues after upgrading QT.
You also have to trash quicktime receipts. If you do a search on this forum about the topic i'm sure you will find everything you need to know in detail.
    Good luck.

  • [missing] Apple FireWire DV NTSC

this is strange. I opened final cut to start capturing today and I couldn't capture anything from my camera. I've been able to do it before so I know it isn't the camera. Any ideas? When I go into my A/V settings it shows that the video playback is set to "[missing] Apple FireWire NTSC." Everything else is set up for Apple FireWire, the only one that says missing is video playback. I tried deleting my preference files and that didn't solve the problem, I've tried restarting and that didn't solve it. Any ideas?

First... can you open iMovie and check to see that it sees it there?
    If not...
Shut down the computer unplug everything have a beer and then fire it back up after 20 minutes. (Often called the Guinness Solution)
    Work?
    No -- do this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

  • Missing firewire ntsc

I have two different macs and they have both started saying “Missing Apple Firewire NTSC” both in the Audio/Video settings and also when I try to Log and Capture in FCP.
I’ve also switched out firewire cables/ports, etc.
    My versions are:
FCP 5.1.4 with QT 7.6.4 on OS 10.4.11
FCP 5.0.4 with QT 7.6.2 on OS 10.4.11
I just can't see how it would be hardware with 2 different machines at the same time.

Did you recently update QT, just prior to this behavior?
FCP5.1.4 works best with QT 7.1 or 7.2.
Here's a link to Jon Chappell's Digital Rebellion blog, which lists these compatibilities...

  • MISSING FIREWIRE CABLE

Was given 20 gb classic ipod second hand from family member who has lost the firewire cable. I synced ipod with my itunes (on my pc) and updated it and now it's asking me to complete the update by plugging it in via the ipod power adapter, which I have. Just missing cable. Suggestions?! (other than buying a new cable which I'd like to avoid!)

Plug it into an unit such as the iPod Hi-Fi, or try this method, or take it to an AASP.

  • Missing Firewire - for video output

Am trying to run out a tape of a timeline, or else, run out via firewire to my standalone Sony DVD recorder. Confronting the "MISSING APPLE FIREWIRE 720 ...". Noticed a lot of posts concerning this.
And yes, I have upgraded from 4.5 to 5.1. So I just reinstalled QT. This did not help. Have digitized many times from this port after upgrade, so cable and port work.
Stumped, completely. Also, there were no receipts for QT anywhere to delete.
I have never used Imovies, etc.
    fred

What is your sequence preset that you're trying to output?
Unless it's DV, it won't go through the firewire. If you're trying to output something that's not specifically DV-NTSC (or PAL, depending on your locale), it won't go.
We need more information about what your exact setup is and what you're trying to do. All of a sudden, at the end of this thread, you bring in BlackMagic, which hadn't been mentioned at all until now.
What are you trying to do?

  • Missing video device / apple firewire

When trying to caputure, a box comes up that says "attempt to capture video without a video device. Please select video device from capture presets."
Under capture presets, where it lists all the settings for each preset, it says: "WARNING video device dv video is missing."
Under a/v settings -> summary -> video playback, it says "[missing] Apple firewire PAL." (I'm using PAL)
When trying to log and capture, I can't see the image, but can control the camera.
Background: I just reinstalled FCP HD and Quicktime.
If anyone has any ideas about this, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Nathan
Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP HD

    Nathan,
The setup of you system is a little unclear from your profile.
Are working in 10.3.9 with FCP4.5 and now gone back to QT6.5.2?
If so, that is a very reliable grouping. I'd say, unless you have changed or added a drive, changed the firewire port the drive is connected to or changed some other physical element, the QT reinstall is not working as it should.
Try trashing the receipts, download the full installer and then run it from your hard drive again.
    Good luck.

  • [Missing] Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) option

This happened in 2 edit suites. I fixed it in edit 1 by resetting PRAM and trashing prefs. Edit 2 won't see it.
I can capture via Firewire from this deck (Sony M35U), so I obviously have a connection. System Profiler shows the deck and all its info, so it's obviously recognized by the computer. If I capture via the AJA, I can still set deck control over Firewire, so it's obviously THERE.
Yet, when I go to View/Video Output, it's not even an option. I don't even get the [Missing] Firewire NTSC 720 x 480 option. It's just not there. I have all the AJA options, but not the FIrewire ones. Anyone seen this disappear like that?
    Tried:
    Resetting PRAM several times
    Trashing prefs (all of 'em)
    Disconnecting all cables and reconnecting
Checked all of the settings on the deck several times
    Changed Firewire cable twice
WOndering if this is an AJA conflict, but it works now in the other edit suite, which is a clone of this one. Weird and frustrating.
Haven't tried setting up a new user yet, gonna try that now. If you have a clue, please clue me in…

All the settings were exactly the same. I changed nothing. It was a weird experience, but on a whim I decided to simply swap the decks in the rooms, wondering if there was some corrupt communication from the decks via the Firewire. Seems that was the case, because once I switched rooms, everything worked. Glad it worked out, because I was about to send the decks in for repair, having tested the ports, the Firewire cables, and FCP, and all came out working fine. Can't explain it, but it works.
    Thanks.

  • Missing Apple Firewire NTSC

    Hi all,
I've read tons on this but can't find a solution...please help.
I needed to output a spot to miniDV for a station (haven't needed to do this in quite a while) but when I start up to output there's the "(missing) Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)" message.
I recently (past 6 or so months) upgraded to Final Cut Studio 3 (not sure if this is significant).
I'm certain all of my capture and sequence settings are correct (used EasySetup and checked settings).
    I also:
    trashed prefs
    zapped the PRAM
removed QT versions and installed the most recent version
copied all additional easy setups to the library
    checked cables and ports
    reset decks to factory settings
checked system profiler is seeing decks
removed other peripherals on FW chain
My FCP is not seeing either of my decks – it won't load up the Apple FireWire NTSC for video or audio out.
It's not the decks – ultimately I had to transfer the project over to my laptop for output to the deck.
I don't know what to do.
    I have:
    Dual-Core 2x2.66 Xeon PowerMac G5 with 9 GB RAM
FCP 7.0.3, QT7.6.9, AJA Kona 3, JVC BR-HD50 Deck, Sony GV-HD700 Clamshell Deck
    Thanks for any advice.

    Woops! Thanks for replying.
Sorry for the disinformation – it's a MacPro 2nd Gen Dual 2.66 Intel Xeon with 9G RAM, AJA Kona3, and a 3ware Sidecar eSATA RAID.
The system recognizes both of my decks (JVC BR-HD50, and Sony GV-HD700). I'm just using the DV-NTSC easy setup to keep things simple and I check to make sure all of the AV tabs reflect these settings accurately.
This is the way I've always done it for going out to these decks for years now and I've never had any problems. I have a standard DV-NTSC sequence with bars and tone, slate, countdown, etc. for sending to stations. I haven't had to do this in quite a few months as stations are increasingly accepting digital files via ftp.
As I mentioned, I've done everything I've seen suggested online, and also tried the powered FW400 hub with no luck.
Thanks for any insight you might be able to give me on this issue.

  • [Missing] Apple FireWire

I can't get Final Cut Pro 4.5 to output to my DV deck, although it has in the past.
When mastering to tape I have device control of my Sony DSR-20 deck (I can lay black w/ timecode) but I can't output the program's video & audio. In my Audio/Video Settings, Video Playback indicates "[Missing] Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)", although device control and blacking happens via firewire.
I also tried digitizing DV footage but can't bring in video or audio either. Capture Settings are Device Control: FireWire NTSC, and Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48 kHz.
FYI – I have Final Cut Pro 4.5 running on a G5 with Panther 10.3.9 and Quicktime 6.5.2. I’m aware of the issues some folks have had with Tiger and QT7 so I’ve been hesitant to go there yet. Also, I have external drives firewired into the G5’s back port, while the DV deck is firewired into the front port.
    Thanks for any help --
    Dan

I exported the program to my HD, unplugged the external drives, and tried again to see if FCP would recognize the deck without the drives. No luck.
I wonder why I'd need to add a new card? This has always worked fine before. It's just now that FCP can't locate my deck and input or output video/audio. At the moment I'm more concerned with outputting since I need to master to tape for a project I'm sending out.
I checked my external drives in System Profiler and they're all 400 Mb/sec speed -- I don't have an 800 speed drive connected, which I would guess might impact firewire's ability to detect devices.
I'm up for trying a new card. Is there one in particular that you would suggest? I'm considering this one:
