Firewire mystery - help!

Both my firewire ports won't recognize a dang thing. They've just stopped.
I go to the profiler and it says:
FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Does that mean they're alive?!
I've tried the powering down (totally disconnecting everything for 30 mintues) and resetting PRAM (whatever THAT means), but the iMac simply won't recognize the same camera it did yesterday. Could the cord be fried or something? I'm not super literate, so assume I'm handicapped in the realm of computers.

After going through technical service via phone, I'm taking the machine into the Apple store in the morning. I'll report back findings - phone tech said it must be "hardware."

  • The Great iMac FireWire Mystery

I'm stumped on this one and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
A couple of months ago I replaced my mother's mirror door G4 (2x1GHz) with a 20" 2.16GHz Intel iMac (the last of the all-white iMacs). Her G4 had an 80GB and a 60GB internal hard drives, with the 80GB being the boot drive and the 60GB being accessed exclusively by Retrospect to do incremental backups on a nightly basis and a recycle backup once a month. This system worked quite well for the past couple of years.
Her iMac has a 250GB internal drive. I added a Newer Tech miniStack v2 200GB hard drive which I have connected via FireWire. Using the same Retrospect-based system, backups are performed regularly. However, there's a fly in the ointment. Occasionally and for reasons unknown the computer will unmount the FireWire drive all by itself. This happens regardless of whether the computer is idle or in use. Power cycling the drive will remount it and all is well afterwards -- until the next time. It seems to happen about once every 2-3 days. The drive can be connected for 2-3 days at a time without any problems, but then it just disappears. Poof.
Things to remove from the list right off the bat...
    1. The miniStack drive is fine, having performed its duties on several other computers in the past and operating flawlessly in the same capacity on other computers (including a MacBook Pro and an aluminum iMac).
    2. OS X is set to sleep the drive when it's not in use. Since the incremental backup process takes less than five minutes a day to complete, having the drive spun up 24/7/365 makes little sense. The drive happily spins up when Retrospect does its thing (assuming the drive is still on the desktop at that time, of course) and the drive happily spins down shortly after Retrospect finishes (again, assuming...). A suggestion of "turn drive sleep off" is not acceptable for this reason, and for the fact that the other computers that the drive was attached to also had drive sleep enabled and didn't have this problem.
    3. The OS X installation (10.4.10) is very clean, having been installed when the iMac was installed. There are no "haxies" or anything weird like that installed. The only "modification" to the system is enabling the DEBUG menu in Safari. When I put the iMac into target disk mode and boot my wife's MacBook Pro from the iMac's hard drive, the miniStack drive does not show this problem. If the OS X installation was to blame then the MacBook Pro should also have lost the drive.
    4. I've also gone the other way, booting the iMac from the MacBook Pro's OS (10.4.8 and 10.4.10) in target disk mode. The problem remains on the iMac.
    5. The iMac itself has been checked out by Tekserve and the Apple Store, both in Manhattan, and has been pronounced 100% without error or problem. The iMac also passes the hardware test provided on the Apple CD and the TechTool Pro diagnostic. All other aspects of the computer perform flawlessly.
    6. The FireWire cable has been replaced, and both the old and new cables are perfectly functional with all other drives and computers tested.
    7. With one exception, other FireWire devices on the iMac seem to work flawlessly in all other regards. I've tried two camcorders, an iSight webcam, a friend's FireWire-to-MIDI box, a DVD burner, and a FireWire CF card adapter. All perform perfectly. The one exception is a 60GB portable FireWire hard drive. This drive performs exactly the same way on the iMac; that is; you can connect it and use it without a problem, but if you keep it connected for 2-3 days it too disappears from the desktop just like the miniStack drive. (I had a 2GB CF card connected to a FireWire CD card adapter, and it was mounted on the desktop as a formatted Mac volume. This card stayed on the desktop for five days without a problem, so the problem seems to be localized to actual hard drives and not just mass storage devices.)
    8. The iMac performs perfectly in target disk mode. I had it in TDM connected to the MacBook Pro for several days and it never disappeared.
So, I'm at a loss. My current "fix" is to connect the drive to the iMac via USB and that seems to be working. That seems to indicate that it's a FireWire problem but I've never heard of one so specific to one particular category of hardware before (e.g., hard drives). Regardless, that doesn't solve this mystery. Yes, the drive works under USB....but why not FireWire like it should?

I have been having similar problems with a Mybook FW HD disappearing and remounting at random intervls. I am in the process of replacing it with a Fantom 1000.( I have a 300G Fantom with an Oxford chipsest that has been completley reliable for > 2yrs attached via FW400).
The Fantom 1000 mounted immediately with FW800, but as it was Fat32 formatted I decided to erase and reformat with MacOS extended using disk utility. I haven't been able to mount the final product, although it is recognized and described by the System. Disk utility can't verify or repair due to a formatting error.. I should mention that disk utility never gave any indication that it had finished the formating.. the blue barber pole was still spinning after 12 hrs
How long should it take to format a 1T disk?
Anyway now I am trying using a FW400 port and am about 1 hr into it...... next I will try USB and if that fails I will try to return to FAT 32... I should have quit while I was ahead
My question .... is this a FW problem, a Fantom problem or a formatting (Disk utility probem)

I recently bought a m-audio solo interface for using to make music on my macbook using guitar and a condenser microphone. The problem is that the firewire cables that the interface came with are a 4 pin to 4 pin cable and a 4 pin to 6 pin cable. I need help finding out if there is a 4 to 8 pin firewire cable?

  • Dead screen, transfering documents via firewire - need help

    Greetings,
So I've got a 1 Ghz iMac (floating pivot screen.) - my primary mission critical workstation. My screen died today. Grrrr.
No time to muck about, I went out and purchased a mac mini (1.5 Ghz single intel core), I want to transfer all data from the old box to the new asap.
The migration assistant that appears at first boot up is cool, and I was able to move all applications. (handy!)
Problem is that I couldn't move all my user documents because the old Mac's drive is 80 gig and the new is only 60. So I figured I would just drag and drop as much as I can manually.
I've gone and reattached the old mac to the new via firewire and booted up the old box as an external drive. Problem is, when I open up the user folder on the old hard drive I'm not seeing any files.... ie. all folders including the old desktop folder are empty....its like the files are hidden or something.
    Help please.

could it be because under ownership and permissions I have no access to these folders? Is that why the folders "appear" empty? - then my next question would be, how can I give myself access to them?
Remembering that I am unable to boot up and use the old iMac (except in external drive mode) since the screen (or video card???) is dead.
Also - I'm attempting spotlight searches from the new mac on the old mac's HD for known files on the old mac's desktop and its coming back with nothing...
    What a mess ....maybe

  • Trying to move film project between external firewire drives HELP!

i have a film project that i've been working on and all of the media files and the project file are on one external firewire drive. I want to move the film project to a different, smaller and more transportable firewire drive, however, when i use the media manager to make a copy of the project on the second external drive, when i try to open the new project, it uses only approximate outpoints of the clips in the sequence and all my editting work is pretty much lost. is there a way to preserve my editted outpoints? please help! thanks, jkkjnz

the clips all have names. 01_01 until 01_85 or so and 02_01 until 02_52 or so. when the cop of the project is finishing up, a series of error messages appear which say "an unknown error occured while trying to reconnect clip 02_12 [for example] to the copied file". Then, when i try to reconnect the media from the new project, it says specifically for some clips, "02_09 does not have enough media content to reconnect clip in Sequence 1" and then after a list of similar messages, it says "one or more files did not have enough media to reconnect some clips. some edited clip items have had their outpoints adjusted." grrrr...

  • BAFFLING DV/FIREWIRE MYSTERY ----*** IS GOING ON HERE?

i there, I have a used g5 at my house that has been inconsistently reading the DV stream, by this I mean that FCP and reads vtr ok and has audio but no video. I try both basic and standard for the device control, but not dice. Sometimes when I swithc it will freeze the first frame of video and hold it. Same for QT and imovie, which leads me to belive that its a firewire problem. So I take my camera and tapes to the local college's mac lab and hook it into their g5 there, SAME FREAKING PROBLEM, which would make one deduce that its either the camera or tape. So i give it one last chance and hook my camera into the college's g4 imacs and wa-la everythings kosher. So what gives? My theory is that its some weird interface problem with the g5 and my model of palmcorder (jvc), but it seems firewire should be standard. any tips would be appreciated as I am pulling my hair out on this on, thanks
oh btw, i recently did an archive and install with osx if that helps anybody. maybe its some funky firewire pref file?

    Could it be this?
#30 - Deck recognition after Tiger Upgrade:
    Shane's Stock Answer #30:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1063600&#1063600
The credit for this goes to Bob Sidebotham:
I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).
The workaround is to download Quicktime manually, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:
    1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).
    2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.
    3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.
    4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.

  • Firewire mystery driving me Nuts!

We are a middle school, build a video yearbook every year. We have about 10 firewire (some with USB2) drives. We have triple a interface Lacie, we have some Silver Porsche Lacies, we have OWC elites and some older Lacies. We have been humming along all year no problem. In the last 2-3 weeks we have had about 5 fail. The data is ok, we think, most of the problems have been on the firewire connection board. We have run Apple Hardware test on two of the machines (they are iMac G5 2.0 ghz) and saw nothing. Everything passed. We are perplexed and scared now to plug anything in. This cannot be a coincidence. What else could be going on? What other tests can we run? I have got to resolve this issue. PLease help!

To prevent this from happening in the future is there
anyway you can hookup/mount/dismount the drives
yourself orhave another instructor do it?
This could happen, but realistically sometimes I have 60 students in the Lab (we have a double lab - two sets of 30 computers) and my attentions are there. My editors are responsible, but they are still 13-14 year olds and not well versed in the connection protocol.
    That way
the kids just show up, edit, and leave without ever
handling the drives. I would think that would be the
best bet. Then if it happened again you would at
    least eliminate one possibility.
This would certainly help in my present trouble shooting.
Also- you say you were able to get the drives working
by changing the cases and gotten the drives to work.
Might be a good idea to get each drive up and back up
crucial data like project files and graphics.
This is always a concern, but with about 1.5 terabytes of data where do I put it? This is one reason I moved my data to multiple 250 gb drives, if you lost the data on one, you were only out that data, verses larger drives with more of the finish projects in jeopardy.
Do you have your original tapes? If so, as long as
you have the tapes, project files, and graphics it
wouldn't be totally catastrophic to lose your drive.
You can easily recapture as long as you have the
    original tapes.
I have always kept that in the back of my mind throughout the year, but now with 2 weeks left, it would be a huge undertaking. With massive amounts of child labor editing throughout the year, redoing would be quite a task.
I know you probably have a super
tight budget and probably have to recycle tapes but
just wanted to throw that at you just in case.
Used to do that, not any more, way too many problems reusing tapes. Now we just buy them in bulk at tapestockonline.com We reuse tapes for projects that have lesser importance, or could be reshot if needed.
    Thanks for your interest.

  • BSODs lock ups and flakey firewire port - help ??

Okay I'm really getting fustrated over this laptop it's nearly 2 weeks old
and I've already had 2 BSODs the odd crash where the mouse moves but nothing
else around it works so a forced reboot was needed.
Today I had a BSOD all i did was run some untility from the taskbar called
    network doctor or something.
    error message:
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (no address information supplied)
    STOP: 0x00000000050
someone suggested that I may have a memory problem or my page file is corrupt.
anyway here's a run down on what i've installed so far with my laptop.
    - Installed all XP security updates and patches
    - Installed Firefox 1.0.1 (don't trust IE6.0 yet)
    - Installed iriver download manager (my mp3 player)
    - Installed winamp 2.0 and Creative Notebook Cam.
I've ran a forced boot chkdsk and no problems found.
Another thing I found interesting was nearly everytime my laptop bsods I usually
find a a yellow marker over my 1394 net adapter (firewire port) in device mananger
("cannot start device") don't know if that's related or not. A reboot seems to
clear this yellow marker but I am rather unhappy BSODs are no laughing matter.
My laptop model is the Equium A60-181 (Intel P4 HT 3.2Ghz 512Mb RAM)
Anyone else had similar problems or recommendations?
    cheers,
    Richard S.

    Hi Richard
I understand you that you are unhappy with this all problems but there can be a lot of reasons for that. In my opinion this can happened because of some unnecessary update or some drivers installed by third-party software that you installed on your notebook.
Please reinstall OS using Recovery CD. After firs boot check in device manager if there is some hardware problem. If not you than try to start Config free (Connectivity doctor) and some other Toshiba tools to check if everything is ok.
If everything is ok try to install SP2 if you dont have it on your machine (just SP2 and not separately updates and patches). I am not sure but some of A60 are delivered with SP2.
Install all your programs slowly and follow carefully what happened after every step that you done.

  • Capturing footage from non-firewire camera help!

I'm just getting into editing and have always heard the way to import footage is via firewire.  I haven't bought my camera yet but have been looking at the canon hf s21, but it doesnt have a firewire port.  So does this mean I can only use the usb 2.0? I don't want it to take 10 days to rip 20min's worth of footage.
here are the specs for the s21: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/consumer_camcorders/vixia_hf_s2 1#Specifications
I just need to know if this camera will be compatible with adobe after effects and premiere.
    Thanks so much!

Don't worry about the camera being USB2 instead of FireWire. Most, if not all camcorders that record AVCHD won't have FireWire anyway. But don't worry about the transfer speed either. USB2 transfer rate is 480Mbps, and FireWire is 400Mbps. While USB2 may seem faster in specs, practically it isn't always true. It depends and many things, but for all intents and purposes, they are about the same speed.
Now, will transferring the footage from the camera connected to the computer be faster or slower then taking out the SD card and putting it in an SD card reader on your computer, will depend on the camera and the SD card reader. But in theory, it should be about the same speed. Although, with a good USB3 SD reader, with class 10+ cards, you'll be able to transfer faster. Mind you, because AVCHD is at the most 24Mbps, it will transfer very quickly anyway. Faster then realtime. Whereas, with FireWire, it's realtime only.
As for the camera being compatible with after effects and premiere, don't worry about it. File based cameras like the Canon, are not really an issue. The question you have to ask yourself is "Is my computer fast enough?" Because, AVCHD is a very CPU intensive codec. And while PPro and AE can read natively this codec, running it smoothly in another matter altogether. A fast CPU with enough RAM is what you really need to edit efficiently. I'd actually be more worried about this, then the actual transfer speed.

  • Flickering video when daisy chaining firewire devices - HELP!

I have a 12" Powerbook with a single firewire 400 port, to which I have attached 2 daisy chained external hard drives. I have no problem capuring video off of my camcorder when I daisy chain it onto the end, but when the firewire is sending video the other way, as in the case of "printing" to tape, or using a television during editing, the audio clips and the video flickers substantially.
I've observed that connecting the camera directly to the computer eliminates this problem. Of course, it's a bit awkward, since I also eliminate my scratch disks (the external drives)! I've tried a firewire hub as well, and it seems that either the extra device or the doubled length of cable is interfering with the signal in such a way as to cause the flickering.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
In any case, I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Pro. Assuming I run into the same problem, I was thinking about adding firewire buses with the Express Card slot. Has anyone done this, or have recommendations for firewire cards that reliably work with MBPs?

When you say 'flickering' what do you mean?
If the playback is stuttering, meaning the data rate is not being sustained, then it is a Firewire glitch. If the video is strobing or rolling then it a video issue with the timeline or the capture settings or something else.
We daisy chained Firewire back in the day on the first edition Powerbook (400Mhz with 10GB internal) and had no issues, that was 4-5 years ago, so your PB12 should be fine with this.

  • Firewire cable help

I'm wanting to use a firewire cable to get some video off my dv camera, but im not sure what cable need.
will my google search of "dv to firewire 800" fetch the correct cables? or are there different types of firewire 800?
the dv end of the cabels in the results looks like it has the correct connection.

    Hi Tom,
You need a 9 pin FW 1394b to 4 pin FW400 cable like this one or this one.
    Cheers

  • Get still image, but no motion video via firewire. Help!

This is really kicking me in the behind. I'm trying to do a print to tape, but before I get to that stage I have this problem where I can see my timeline video play fine in the canvas and I can see the still frame that I'm sitting on on the NTSC monitor, but that's all. If I try and play the video all I see on the NTSC is the still of the last frame. That is, until I stop the playback & then I see the frame I'm now on. So I have the data flowing from FCP 4.5 to my Sony DSR-20 and then to my monitor, just no motion video! I've gone over Shane's list of quick answers & I can't find anything wrong. What am I missing? I'm running 10.3.9 and QT 7 (not 7 pro).

Well guys, thanks for the suggestions but I am in all
frames, I have image selected as well as RGB. Any
    other thoughts?
Forgive me for what may be a silly question: are you sure there is no codec incompatibility between your sequence and your device?
I ask because the only time I've gotten this issue is when I was working with 8-Bit Uncompressed (aka BetaSP footage) but still had my external monitoring pointing to my DV Deck. Just as in your case, I wouldn't get motion, but whenever I paused, I'd get that frame (externally).
Of course, you could have stumbled upon a whole new can of worms.

  • Nikon D1 raws - Mystery - HELP!

I don't get it. some of my Nikon D1 raws show only in project management, when I switch to standard display or full screen I get a blink of the image and then a "unrecognised image format". SOME other done in the same conditions (I checked it all) won't even show more than a grey thumbnail in management mode.
The crazy thing is that before importing mu raws in small projects I tried aperture by importing a few random pics. They showed ok in full screen and co. Now, reimported properly in "here to stay" projects those raws are not showing anymore.
    I have a dual 2.7 G5 with 2 gig5 of ram.
This is insane. Has anybody elese that problem?
    Thanks

Is there something else I can do, besides upgrading to cs6??
You can either upgrade to at least CS6 because you need at least ACR 7.4 to support your new Camera NEF format and PSCS6 (currently at ACR 8.3 but started with ACR 7) can give you the correct thumbs and previews form NEF or you can use the Free Adobe DNG Converter and first convert the NEF to Adobes DNG and then work on these files in CS5.
Try these links (or do a search on Adobe Downloads if they don's work, many are country specific:
    For Mac:

    For Windows:

  • Can someone help my with my firewire issues?

After searching on the web for a while I've discovered that leopard and firewire are having issues working with each other.
    I own a Macbook Pro 10.5.6
I'm having issues running my mac when I have more than 1 firewire device connected to it. I do a lot of video editing and capture all my video footage with Final Cut Pro via FW400. I have a GRaid 1Tb external HDD that is connected via FW800. Never had problems with any of this before but upgraded to Leopard last week and then this issue hit.
•If I have my HDD connected but not my camera, the HDD works fine. However my MAC won't recognize my camera if I hook it up.
•If I have my camera connected but not my HDD the camera will connect just fine. However when I try to hook up my HDD it will not be recognized by my mac.
•If I have neither of them connected and connect them both, my MBPro will recognize whichever device gets hooked up first but will not recognize the second. If I leave them both connected any try to shut down my MAC- it will not shut down. As soon as I disconnect 1 of them, my MAC will shut down just fine.
•If I hook up both devices before my MAC is turned on and then try to boot it up. I will get to the blue screen and it will boot no further. If 1 of the devices is then turned off, the MAC will continue to boot just fine.
I've tried resetting the PRAM by doing the <option> <command> <r> but it had no effect. Not sure I'm doing it propperly. I hold down <option> <command>
<r> and wait until I hear 3 chimes. Anyway, it hasn't fixed anything.
Also, I read something about resetting some of the firmware by holding down <option> <command> <o> <f> after the start up chimes and then typing in
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
However, whenever I try to do this- I hold down <option> <command> <o> <f> but nothing happens. I never get to any kind of command prompt.
Anyone have any other ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks!

Thank you all for your replies. I'm trying them all but nothing is working.
I do have a couple of new pieces of information. I figured out that the reason nothing was showing in my System Profiler was because I had both the HDD and the Camera connected if I disconnected one or the other, the remaining device will show in my firewire tree.
Here is a listing of some things. Maybe this will help you all.
