Firewire Network causing Mini to Mount on Wrong Machine

Hello, I posted this topic in the "network" section of the OSX section, but had no luck.
I have my G5 dual 1.8 running Tiger networked to my old G4 450 running Panther via firewire.
On my front firewire port of the G5, I have an external LaCie drive. I hook my iPod up to my LaCie.
However, the iPod mounts on the G4. I can't get it to mount to the G5. My system profiler says that the ipod is connected, and I can't get Disk Utility to mount it (even after I unmount it on the G4). I've tried bypassing the Lacie, but to no avail.
If I hook the ipod up to the other firewire port on the G4, it mounts on the G5.
I've tried turning file sharing off, but still get the same results.
Any ideas?

(p.s., I've since installed an extra Firewire card in the G4. If I hook the iPod to that, it mounts properly on the G4. Strange, eh?)

To automount them, drag those Aliases/Mounted volumes to the System Preferences>Users & Groups Pref Pane's Login Items Window.

Hi folks,
I am from Germany with the following problem.
I connected two MACs - Mac Pro (10.5) and iMac (10.6) - via Firewire for networking.
Now I bought a FireWire 800 HDD and plugged it into the MacPro for faster access to video-data. Unfortunately every time I turn on the HDD it is mounted on the iMAC???? I always have to pull out the FireWire network-cable from the iMac before. Than it works and the HDD is seen by the MacPro. After that I can plug in the Firewire Network-cable back into the iMac for work.
Is there a solution? Is it possible that it matters which port I use for network or HDD...??

Hmmmmmm, it is really simple....:-)
1.) I have an iMAC with connection to Internet.
2.) I have an MacPro which has no connection to Internet and thats what I want.
3.) Sometimes I need to share Files between iMac and MacPro, so I have connected them permanent to a Mini-Network via FireWire.
4.) I work with FinalCut on the MacPro
5.) I bought a FireWire HDD for use ONLY with MacPro NOT to share it.
6.) I connected the FW-HDD to the MacPro
7.) I turn on the FW-HDD and it appears and is mounted ONLY by the iMAC what I DO NOT want.
8.) I turn off the FW-HDD
9.) I disconnct the two Macs from FW-Connection
10.) I turn on the FW-HDD and it appears and is mounted on the MacPro what I WANT
11.) I connect the FW-Network back on, to share Files between the MACs - NOT from the FW-HDD, (it is ONLY for the MacPro Video) but from the internal drives.
12.) So far, so good.
13.) Problem: I want to mount the FW-Hdd to the MacPro by turning it on without disconnecting the two Macs.
Better????

Maxtor One Touch II USB/firewire Ext HD won't mount

The drive shows up on the bus, but does not mount, and also does not show up with Disk Utility. I've taken it to the Apple Genius Bar and they couldn't find the problem, and said they only had 15 minutes to dedicate to me anyway. The drive didn't show on their MBP either. I've had this connected to my G4 for the past year, with no problem, and it still functions just fine there.
As another note, my Canon G6 Powershot, which has previously mounted on this machine (The MBP) via USB, no longer does. I can download photos directly into Iphoto, but the drive never mounts to the desktop.
I've tried both the USB and Firewire options with my external, with the same results. I need to download my photos from the MBP to the external, as it's getting pretty full. I noticed in another forum that FWT mode was not working with non-Intel macs prior to 10.3.9. but it's still not working between my G4 and the MBP.
I know there are several issues here, but was hoping someone could help me sort them out if I dump the whole scenario.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have a one touch II that I purchased to use to backup and store files for my mbp.
Mine mounted correctly, but the one touch button did not work. After trying to fix it myself, I called the Maxtor tech support, and they said that they don't support using their drives or their software with intel based macs. Of course they only told me that after spending a long time on the phone.
So the only advice I can give to you is to not try Maxtor's tech support; it will be a waste of time.
Or perhaps your USB ports are broken and need to be replaced on your mbp.

You can connect them to each other through FireWire I believe, if that's what you mean. Otherwise I have no idea what you're talking about, more details wouldn't exactly hurt.

Firewire networking not working

At work, I have been using firewire to connect my MacBookPro to a G5 10.5.8 (that is the highest OS X that supports its PowerPC’s). TheG5 has a number of large disks including one that is used for timemachine onthe MacBook Pro. It worked welluntil yesterday when I installed Lion. Now the MacBook does not see any disk onthe G5, nor does it connect to the internet when “internet sharing” is turned “on”,on the G5. When started in Target mode and connected using the Firewire, thedisks are visible.
I can still access the G5’s disks by connecting to the slowand unreliable wireless network, so timemachine is not completely cut off.However, this needs to be fixed for the long term.

BTW: using the new Safari to create this little message was a disaster. Finger slips deleted the page a number of times (not even sure what gesture I did) so I ended up writing this in good ‘ol Word andpasting it in. Apparently the “recoveranything” feature of Lion does not apply to text boxes in Safari.

When we connect the isight camera in ANY of the ports of the Server and the firewire network cable is connected, the status of the ichat camera turns off or used by another device, but the network status is green if we disconnect the network cable.
Interesting to read this as I have this exact same problem on an imac G5 with firewire cable to external drive in one port and ichat camera in the other. Cannot normally get both to work at same time. The external drive is being used as a Time Machine backup.

Firewire network V's ethernet 100

Would FW400 network be faster than an ethernet100 I understand the distance limitation but I'm looking at it for a few mac miniG4's in an xgrid setup. We xgrid run over Fw400 is the next obivios question?

You're supposed to just need a FireWire repeater (it's like a hub). In my expereince you just need to daisychain the computers. If the TOTAL distance is more than 15 feet, you need to put a repeater every 15 feet. Max distance for IP over FireWire is 237ft.
I quite often share my external SuperDrive between my iBook and mini and have FireWire networking on at the same time.

Firewire networking with Windows

I have an Intel Mini running 10.4, two Windows machines running XP with Firewire and an external firewire hard drive. Now, in the past, I had the two Windows boxes networked via firewire (yes, Windows can do that and it's FAST) and had the hdd hooked to one. NOw I want to network my Mini to the other two. Can I? If so, how?
Would I need two firewire cards in a machine to make this happen? If so, maybe one turned on to be a network and one to be normal?

I do think it requires another FW card... think I read that with IP over FW it needed it's own.

Mac mini not mounting drive

here is the story.
The Hardware:
-I have an early 2010 Intel mac mini with OS 10.6.6
-I have a FAT32 hard drive (It's called the RED DRIVE, its for a Digital Cinema Camera called the RED ONE. It has FIREWIRE 800/400/USB2.1
The Problem:
The drive will not mount on the mac mini via Firewire 800
What I have tried so far:
-the Hard Drive mounts fine on my MacBook Pro via Firewire 800
-the mac mini will mount other drives via firewire 800.
-i took the computer into the apple store they replaced the mother board, got it home and the **** thing won't mount still
-i have also tried new cables

updated info
-the hard drive will mount with USB *edit
-it does not mount via firewire 400 *edit
-it does not show up in disk utility *edit
-The red drive works fine on the red camera and has been formatted *edit
-I sent the red drive in for service as I thought it was a problem with the drive. but it checked out okay *edit

Firewire networking problem?

Hi folks, anyone had any experience networking a Mini (PPC 1.42Ghz 512Mb RAM) to a WinXP machine via the firewire port?
Managed to connect the Mini with a (generic) WinXP laptop using the Network IP thing via firewire. My tech savvy cousin set it up for me.
Anyways... things work fine until I need to shutdown the computers. When I restart, I need to plug-unplug the firewire cable on the Mini to get things going again. No probs with the XP machine.
Sometimes I need to do the plug/unplug routine, sometimes I don't. What gives? Should I get a new cable perhaps? Or do I need some 3rd party software?

Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It turns out that a new ethernet PCI card solved the problem. I picked up this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833180026) at NewEgg for $8.00 and I didn't even need to find drivers for it.
Once I had installed it, I was able to transfer 60GB of data without any trouble. The same transfer crashed the G4 when I tried it again using the G4's built in ethernet port. I'm glad to find a cheap fix for the problem. Hope this helps.

Mountain Lion Server: Network users Home directory mount problems

I am having several problems with my server after a latest name change of the server via Server.app. (A first name change made problems, after that I have been trying to repair, changing the name a few times more. With latest name change, I also changed the server name itself from Foo to Bar while changing domain name from domain.com to bar.domain.com after which I repaired DNS so it covers the whole domain.com domain).
The users in the Network directory think their home directory is on afp://domain.com/Users, but the server is now called bar.domain.com. /Network/Servers/bar.domain.com does not exist on the server. Client machines (with mobile home directories) are now able to sync, because I added an A record for domain.com to DNS (not nice, but does the job, or more specifically that job). Also on the clients, I can go to a SHARED folder in Finder with the name Bar and go to Users and see al the home directories there. But:

So, on the server looking for folder ~user does not work. It wants to go to afp://domain.com/Users/user but that is unreachable.
Any tips on what I can do except do a clean rebuild of the server (again)?
(One of the obvious problems is that the Realm of OD is still called foo.domain.com, the origin of my problems has been that the first name change from foo.domain.com to domain.com (ill-advised, I know) failed — partly).
What I'd like to know is:
- where is it determined which servers end up in /Network/Servers?

Other machines can mount afp://foo.domain.com/, afp://domain.com/ and afp://bar.domain.com/, but the server itself cannot mount them via Finder.

External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder.
I have an 2008 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66hz, 10GB Mem, ATI HD4870 with 4 internal 1 TB Drives. I have 3 external HDDs (2 USB + 1 FW400). The 2 USB HDDs are for Time Machine and backups.
The external FW HD is a 1TB bootable clone of my Internal 1 TB boot HDD.
I have 2 problems ... somethimes when using finder or opening a folder, copying files, starting or quiting a program, I get the spinning beach ball that seems to hang the Mac.
I power off the external FW HDD and everything starts to work. I get an error about the device going offline, I then power the FW HDD back on and all is good.
It seems the external FW Drive tends to hang the system. It occurs pretty frequently.
Any recommendations?
The other issue is that when I use finder to go to a folder, I seem to have to wait for all these drive to spin up. You can hear them all start whirring.
is there a way to remove that lag?

If you recently moved to Snow Leopard you might look for new firmware for your external drive. I would also get DiskWarrior and run that on the external and consider programs like Drive Genius. You might also back it up and wipe it and restore the data. After that I'd consider looking at a new external.
Sleeping drives that take time to spin up after waking....I'd like to learn how to stop that myself. Be sure the Energy Saver in System Preferences is set to not put drives to sleep when possible. Even then my drives will go to sleep and I have up to 6 external added at times and they take quite a while to all spin up. I've never found a way to prevent that.
BTW...external USB drives on a MacPro? Really? Even for backup....

Turn Off Firewire Networking. You need to do this!

10.4.3 install turns on firewire networking. If you are using a firewire interface, turning this off greatly improves performance. Go to system preferences, network. In the show menu select Network Port Configurations, and turn off "built-in firewire".
This has vastly improved stability with my mlan firewire stuff.
When switched on, osx constantly monitors the firewire ports for a network.
