Firewire Network Sharing

I want to make a private firewire network to share a folder for quick access between two iMac, they are also on the same ethernet network, how do I share a folder between the two computers only for the firewire connection?

If your two Macs are already networked, why do you want to double-up with FW networking also?   If both network connections are active, you can't control the routing of specific traffic over one vs. the other.  Traffic will generally move via whatever network connection is at the top of the list in your System Prefs > Networking panel even if more than one network is active.
In System Prefs > Networking > File Sharing you can set access permissions by folder and by user.  That should accomplish the security you seem to be interested in.  Or are you specifically interested in preventing certain transfers from being physically carried over the ethernet network?

To connect to another computer on your home network as a registered user, you need to enter the administrator's name and password for the computer you are trying access.

  • Firewire - Internet Sharing - Networking

I have my two apple computers connected via firewire. (Macpro Quad 8GB mem, 2 Video Cards, 3 monitors, airport) The computers see each other and file sharing, file transfer, itunes, and screen sharing all work.
The Macpro has an ethernet card directly connected to my router. My ipod connects to my Macpro via airport. My macbook can also connect to my macpro via airport. But Airport is way to slow so I purchased a firewire cable.
    Internet settings are
Share your connection from : Ethernet 1
To computers using Airport; and Firewire
Internet sharing works over airport but not firewire.
On the Macpro I set firewire network up manually
    ip 169.254.102.75 255.255.255.0
router 69.123.125.221 (ip address of my ethernet card which has router address 69.123.96.1)
    DNS 167.206.254.1
On the macbook firewire is manual
    ip address 169.254.102.77 255.255.255.0
router 169.254.102.75 next hop to remote firewrie
    dns 167.206.254.1
I also tired to http://69.147.76.15 which is yahoo to rule out dns problems
    Any ideas.

My solution was to go ethernet via a router.. No problemo now.

  • Firewire networking not working

At work, I have been using firewire to connect my MacBookPro to a G5 10.5.8 (that is the highest OS X that supports its PowerPC’s). TheG5 has a number of large disks including one that is used for timemachine onthe MacBook Pro.  It worked welluntil yesterday when I installed Lion. Now the MacBook does not see any disk onthe G5, nor does it connect to the internet when “internet sharing” is turned “on”,on the G5. When started in Target mode and connected using the Firewire, thedisks are visible.
I can still access the G5’s disks by connecting to the slowand unreliable wireless network, so timemachine is not completely cut off. However, this needs to be fixed for the long term.
    Thoughts?
BTW:  using the new Safari to create this little message was a disaster. Finger slips deleted the page a number of times (not even sure what gesture I did) so I ended up writing this in good ‘ol Word andpasting it in.  Apparently the “recoveranything” feature of Lion does not apply to text boxes in Safari.

When we connect the isight camera in ANY of the ports of the Server and the firewire network cable is connected, the status of the ichat camera turns off or used by another device, but the network status is green if we disconnect the network cable.
Interesting to read this as I have this exact same problem on an imac G5 with firewire cable to external drive in one port and ichat camera in the other. Cannot normally get both to work at same time. The external drive is being used as a Time Machine backup.
The apple article on How to Troubleshoot iSight quotes
If more than one FireWire device is connected to your computer, there may be an incompatibility between two of the devices. To rule this out, disconnect all other FireWire devices from the computer, including external hard drives, CD/DVD drives, other cameras, and FireWire-based networking equipment, such as hubs and repeaters. If your iSight camera works normally when you remove other FireWire devices, plug them back in one at a time to isolate the cause of the issue.

  • Firewire Internet Sharing Probs

Hi, looking for help to resolve the following issue: On my Firewire connected cpu, I can't get past the "You are not connected to the internet." dialog in Safari. Reaching the conclusion that one or more of my settings are incorrect.
1st). 24" iMac w/ 10.5.1; connected to Cable modem via Ethernet

Network > Ethernet > Manually; IP Address: 69.92.45.(same as above *plus 1*)
    Subnet: 255.255.252.0 - Router: 69.92.(same as above)
I can see & browse files within Network > Servers yet, I'm not able to access the internet.
Might anyone have a suggestion for this prob? I have searched for the answers w/ no concise results.
    Thank you for any help,
    Sim

    simoom,
I'm surprised you're getting anything, on either computer. Let's see if we can't get you straightened out.
First, computer #1 needs to get its IP address via DHCP, not manually (unless your ISP has told you otherwise; not very common). Plus, it would be a good idea to get rid of the switch. A switch is OK if it is downstream of a router, which itself acts as an internal DHCP server, but not when connected directly to a modem.
So, computer #1 should be connected directly to the modem. It will talk directly to your ISP's DHCP server and acquire an IP address. It would appear that the Firewire Sharing is set up properly, so this should be fine once an IP address is nailed down.
Second, computer #2 needs to gain an IP address the same way: via DHCP. When computer #1 has Internet Sharing turned on, it acts just a router would, issuing "private" IP addresses to the connected computer(s), then acting as a NAT router. On computer #2, configure a Firewire network port, and set it to look for an IP address via DHCP.

  • Distributed application: Networked Shared Variables, Named Services (Raw TCP/IP) or Other?

    Happy New Year NI forums!
I am working on a project involving mobile interacting robots. In the future it is likely the application's components may need to run on different PCs (Targets). Note: at this point in time all the components are seperate but all running on the localhost machine. Thinking towards the future I want to pick the 'best' architecture to allow all these components (VIs performing various functions) in multiple locations. For example, several VIs on the Robots, VIs on serveral PCs.
I am  currently aware of using Server/Client TCP/IP using named services. My mock up works well, but is it time efficient (my time coding) I wonder.. ?
Whereas I am aware of networked shared variables which handle connections and all the parsing for the underlying tcp/ip communication. But will this be difficult the manage? I am unsure if I can associate shared variables with a VI similar to named services. I suppose I could pro grammatically create the variable upon initialization of the server component - and the client could just search the list of avaiaible variables to connect too. Downside this would require DSC module.
As you can see, I am rather unsure. Any advice would be great!

    Hi Jason,
Thanks for your reply. I hope your enjoying NI UK as much as I did.. fun times!
I have seen the link you posted a few times before. But today, I took a better look at it.
My issue is I need several multi-client severs, i.e. many servers which allow multiple clients to connect to them.
Now the STM does have an example of this - STM mutli-client Example - Server.vi (used with the STM mutli-client.vi)
However, when a make copies of these code (to have my second server) - it refuses to run. As in , it just stops itself.
I DID change the port number, on the lister aspect of the server code. But I Am unsure what else I would need to change to get this setup to work?
One thought I had was, the FIFOs all having the same name - this probably isn't a good idea between servers.
    Any suggestions would be grateful!
*please could you provide me email support

  • Network shared variables lose binding

    Hello,
I am developing an application in LabVIEW that uses network shared variables to transmit data between two PC's on the same subnet. The shared variables work fine when running the VI's in development mode, however, when i build the vi's into an executable I find that they no longer work. Here is what I have found so far:
I deploy the shared variable library on the publisher machine (also happens to be the development machine) through an invoke node in the executable. NI distributed system manager confirms that this does deploy and indeed updates as it should.
For the executable on the subscriber PC I created a second shared variable library (same project) with the same shared variables and bound them to the respective shared variables from the first library by selecting enable aliasing, then bind to PSP URL and browsing to the shared variable I wish to bind it to (e.g. \\hallnet-ellm2\shared variable library\serial Number). The machines listed under browse were listed by name so when I tried this initially and it did not work I manually changed the name of my machine in the URL box to the IP address of the publisher hoping that would fix it in case the subscriber could not resolve the publishers machine alias. So now my bind URL read \\192.168.0.1\shared variable library\serial Number.
As part of the executable on the subscriber I deploy this second shared variable library. NI distributed system manager confirms that this deploys but under quality for an individual variable it has a list of issues (see attached) and the bound variable is not updating. At this point the publisher shared variables are still functioning fine. By clicking on 'edit variable' I can see that the variable on the subscriber is still bound but the PSP URL is now \\localhost\shared variable library\serial number. Changing the PSP URL on the subscriber to \\192.168.0.1\shared variable library\serial number enables the variable to update as expected. However by this time my executable has already picked up the error and does not function.
I think that the issue lies with the bind URL used on the subscriber as for some reason it does not keep the binding configured in the project and instead changes to 'localhost'. Why is this? Should it not stay bound to the address specified in the project?
I have tried changing the IP addresses in the aliases file so that
    [My Computer]
    My Computer=localhost
    becomes
    [My Computer]
    My Computer=ip of local machine
    This did not help.
The shared variable libraries are included in the build spec to go into the support files directory and they are successfully deployed from there on both publisher and subscriber.
I am using LabVIEW 8.6 on Windows XP
Thanks for any help you may be able to offer,

    Hi Lee,
I hope you are well.  Thank you for your post.  Your application sounds very interesting.
Looking at your issue I was wondering, have you tried lowering your firewalls, as this may be causing the problem.
Also, another option would be to setup a private network.  Do you have access to any routers that you could use to link the two machines independent of your IT's infrastructure?
The other thing to try is two other computers entirely.  Again, it would be ideal to take them off the network you are on, but it's something to try if my prior suggestion doesn't work.  It should work on the original two machines though, and it's likely that different computers won't solve your problems because I suspect the network.
Remember that the client variables must know the location of the variables on the server, so you can't move the server exe around without changing this value.
Make sure to set the network location in the "Bind to Source" option for the client variables.
It is also possible to write a separate piece of code to install on every machine that is responsible for deploying the library and by doing so eliminate the need for programmatically deploying the variables in the original application.  However, this won't really help you, because the variables you use in the application have to be the same as the ones deployed in the library, so if you change the library, they'll no longer be linked and they won't receive data.  You'd have to create a separate exe for every binding source you wanted to link to, and then have a second, known library for the sake of communication locally on the computer between the ‘deployer’ and the actual application.  The main application could then be assigned the responsibility of launching the correct ‘deployer’' if it sees it needs to switch to a different variable binding source.  This method is not the most streamlined or effective, but it might work.
Just to let you know, you will need to use the DSC toolkit.
Please find below some knowledge base links that I think you will find helpful in your application.
    Using Shared Variables in Executables
How do I Programmatically Change the Data Binding Source for Shared Variables?
I hope this information helps and if you can give these suggestions a go and let me know how you get on, that would be great.

  • Using network sharing on Macbook as router, but my ipod can't connect to the internet even though it can connect to wifi

Hi there, recently I've been trying to use my macbook as a router by turning on network sharing.
I'm sharing my connection through PPPoe.
It worked great for my 3DS and I was able to play online flawlessly
(unfortunately I don't have any other mobile device so I could only test this on my 3DS and ipod touch
But my ipod touch 4th gen, while it is able to connect to wifi with a strong bar, I cannot access the internet via web browsers and some of the apps.
It always gives me the 'cannot connect to internet' message.
What further puzzles me is that I can receive, update, and check my mail perfectly fine.
    I've already tried the following:
    1) unplugging and replugging my modem
    2) forgetting the network on my ipod and re-access it
    3) resetting network setting on ipod
    4) tweaking with the internet sharing setting like trying different channels and different types of security
    5) turning off and on my ipod, and turning off and on the wifi on my ipod
Anyway, I'm really stumped and I hope someone can help me figure this out.
Any help will be gladly appreciated.

oh I'm not actually using a router, I'm using my macbook pro as a wifi router by turning on network sharing.
And I'm sharing the connection through PPPoe

  • IPhoto '08 album organization while network sharing

I use iPhoto to store and organize (hopefully) a University's photo archive (which is shared on a network). Would anyone happen to know why my albums do not stay organized (in alphabetical order) when I access a shared iPhoto library remotely?
Also, when I create a new folder and place albums inside of it (for further organization purposes because there are many, many albums) then try to access that folder remotely from another mac, that folder is not 'recognized' as a true folder with albums in it, instead it is treated as one big album.
Another issue is that when i try to export my iPhoto library (under file>export) it won't keep the organization structure (the separate albums). Instead, it places the entire collection of photos into one location, thus losing all those albums and hours of organization.
I'm a bit shocked that Apple hasn't found these issues and fixed them 7 releases later.
Plus, for those people on campus that need access to the University photo archive, they have to find a Mac nearby. Is there any way to share this archive with PCs using iPhoto? Or is there an Adobe product or other other product I should be using that is better designed for these purposes (organization/file structure consistency when network sharing and cross-platform compatible)??
I hope I don't have to switch to a new application, everyone in my department (and other Mac departments) are completely comfortable with iPhoto and it would be a huge learning curve for them to try a new photo database/sharing/storing/editing/organizing/etc. application!
    Please help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I use iPhoto to store and organize (hopefully) a University's photo archive (which is shared on a network).
This is way, way beyond the intended use of iPhoto which is personal photo organiser.
Also, when I create a new folder and place albums inside of it (for further organization purposes because there are many, many albums) then try to access that folder remotely from another mac, that folder is not 'recognized' as a true folder with albums in it, instead it is treated as one big album.
Only Albums are shared. Not events. not folders. Only Albums.
Another issue is that when i try to export my iPhoto library (under file>export) it won't keep the organization structure (the separate albums). Instead, it places the entire collection of photos into one location, thus losing all those albums and hours of organization.
If you export your Library you get the photos from your Library. If you want to export albums, then export the albums. The same happens with iTunes. Export from the Library you get the lot. Want the organisation, export playlist by playlist.
Is there any way to share this archive with PCs using iPhoto?
No. iPhoto has no cross platform capability.
There are other cross platform apps. Microsoft's Expression (http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/overview.aspx?key=web) is one but there are others. Search on MacUpdate
Bearing in mind the use you have I really don't think that iPhoto is the correct application for your needs. You need a more robust and scalable application - perhaps even a media server.

  • Styles being dropped on network shared folder files in Dreamweaver CS5.5

Hello, apoligies if this has already been solved but I could not find anything similar. Recently we have upgraded our staff from Dreamweaver CS4 to CS5.5 and are having some issues with pages dropping the stylesheets which are linked relatively. The relative files are located on a shared network drive which is mapped in Windows 7 as a drive (e.g. My Computer shows the drive as R:).
In Dreamweaver design view up the top it reads:
    Address: file:///R|/acrrm/tinnitus/course_content/001.html
and there is a yellow bar up the top which reads:
'common_styles.css' is a remote file and cannot be edited.
We never had this issue before so I was wondering if it was a new limitation of CS5.5 or if there was something I should look out for in the site definition.
Interestingly enough I was able to fix this on one machine by randomly toggling the live code/view buttons, havent had any luck doing that to other machines though.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Here are the specs:
    O.S: Windows 7
    Version: Dreamweaver CS5.5
    Site Definition: Network shared drive

Interestingly enough I was able to fix this on one machine by randomly toggling the live code/view buttons, havent had any luck doing that to other machines though.
I would have to say that this operation could not possibly fix anything.  I suspect that simply waiting the same amount of time as this operation required would have returned the same result, and it sounds like there is some latency in your network.
Your site is entirely contained on a network shared drive, right?  Or is it that only SOME files are on the network shared drive (R:)?  Also, where is it you are seeing this?
    Address: file:///R|/acrrm/tinnitus/course_content/001.html

However, when iMac 1 copy a folder, or create a new folder in PC, some problem occurs.
    - the folder being create/copy was set to be full access (read/write) for everyone in the permissions setting.
    - the folder can be share with everyone on the iMac1

  • RT Network Shared Variable and Visa Serial Instr class

    Hi,
I'm using Labview 2009 SP1 with the RT module. I've had no problems creating a RT Target application and a Host PC application which are interconnected using Network Shared Variables, until I came to the COM ports fitted to the RT Target (PXI Embedded Controller and 2 x 4 port COM cards).
I can configure and use the COM ports in the RT Target application providing I use constants to define which COM port to use, i.e. VISA OPEN function accepts hardcoded "COM2" , (VISA Serial Instr class).
But I want to pass the COM Port resource name from my host application.
Is there a suitable Network Shared Variable I can create ? or how do I change the string value (COM Port name) of the VISA Serial Instr class variable in the RT Target application ?

  • Network Shared Variable: Aliasing not working

    Hello!
I am running a cRIO 9075, which is publishing network shared variables.
I can see and modify them within Distributed System Manager.
Unfortunately I am not able to read/write the variables through labview.
What I have done so far:
Tools -> Shared Variable -> Register Computer, using the IP of the cRIO
Adding a Variable to the project. Type = Network-Published, Enable Aliasing, choosing "Browse" to select the variable (all published variables from cRIO are shown there), Access Type = read/write. The PSP-URL is: \\192.168.10.70\WaveformManager\Op
Trying to read the variable results code -1950679034 and the result is always the default value for that data type.
BUT this works: using the VIs Data Communication / Shared Variable / Read/Write Variable  and typing in the same URL the Distributed System Manager is showing is showing (in my case: \\192.168.10.70\WaveformManager\Op)
So, what am I doing wrong? Did I forget something or misunderstand how "Aliasing" works?
    Thanks!

    hi,
in which way to you read your shared variable? If you read it before you write  a value "into" the variable it may couse this waring.
    Have you tried this?
