Firewire?? Newbie

Hi
Very newbie question this, but I need to buy a fire wire to connect my new MacBook to my girlfriends old iBook. Whay is a firewire, can I pick one up anywhere, or just from Apple? Are there differnet kinds?
Many thanks!
jim

There are several kinds and lengths of Firewire cable, but for this purpose you need a 6-pin to 6-pin cable. Fortunately, this is a commonly available type, and you can get one from any good electronics store (eg RadioShack in the US), or an online retailer, as well as Apple Stores.
Here's an image of one.
If you're hooking up one computer to the other to transfer data, a 3-foot cable is probably a good length.

  • Intel iMac WD My Book G4 Mac

I have an external 500Gb WD My Book Firewire HD.
It has 2 Firewire ports on the back ( and USB and eSATA).
Is it possible to have it connected to both my Intel iMac and the G4 Mac at the same time ?
I've only just purchased the iMac and I have to transfer data to it from time to time from the G4.
I've been plugging the WD My Book into the G4, saving data to it, ejecting it and then plugging it into the iMac to transfer stuff.
It suddenly dawned on me that maybe I could just leave it plugged into both all the time but as I am new to Firewire drives I am not sure if this will work.
Generally I would only have one of the Macs booted.
I'm not sure what will happen if both are booted at once.
Will the Firewire drive mount on both desktops and be visable/usable by both?
If so do I then need to eject it on both desktops or will ejecting on one cause the other to eject at the same time ?
Humour me please as I am Firewire newbie ;-))
    Thanks in advance

If you have an Airport Extreme - you could also connect your hard drive to it and "share" it over the network. This is an USB connection, but I believe your WD drive has an USB port as well. If you connect it in this way, your Airport Extreme will play a role of a server and have your drive shared over the network. Benefits of this setup are in the fact that you don't need to have booth computers powered up in order to share the drive over the network - in case where you just use computer sharing. Downside of this solution is that the USB data transfer is slow compared to firewire.

  • Newbie Alert: Problem with saving downloads to a network drive

I'm a new Mac user so, I apologize for the newbie question.
I've have a NAS on my home network. I can see it and access it just fine. I have Firefox set to ask me where I want something downloaded. I don't get the option of putting, say a PDF in a folder on my network storage device.
I can put it anywhere on the iMac's hard drive or even a USB/Firewire drive but not a network location. In Windows, you'd map a drive and be off to the races.
How do I do this on a Mac?
    Thank you in advance,
    Rick

AFAIK, not doable for NAS HDs. Since you're new to Macs, you're going to have erase windoze stuff from you lexicon, check these out:

  • How do I open the User Library on a "Firewire" Mac?

I recently replaced my trusty 2008 MacBook Pro with a new one. Not my choice, the video board or some such has tapped out. The new one is working great but I now have to retrieve some old emails. I can use the old Macbook as a "Firewire" drive using a connector I got at the Apple Store. But, as usual, I cannot get into the User Library on the old machine. I have the old boy backed up to Time Machine but I can't get to the User Library there either. I do not need a complete restore as I actually like the clean install of the newbie, but I do need to find these old emails. I have tried to import the email from TM through Mail but it just freezes up.
Amy suggestions? Can the geniuses at the Apple Store retrieve this stuff?
And by the way, why does Apple feel it necessary to hide the User Library when I can go into the System Folder and Library and gum up the works there? What are they protecting me from. Currently I have used a Terminal command that allows me to see my User Library but it won't work on the Mac that is used as an external drive. Unless someone can tell me a Terminal command that would activate that too.
    Thank you.

  • Audigy platinum ex firewire port

We are having great difficulty using the firewire port on an audigy platinum ex. The audigy has worked very well for three years. The machine is an AMD Athlon 2GHz, AOpen m/board, Win XP with SP2.
We recently bought a LaCie d2 extreme 200GB triple interface HD. When connected to the port on the external audigy box, or to the port on the rear of the PCI card, this dri've is not recognosed by the computer. It does not appear as a HD in the hard disk section of the device manager, and we can see no evidence of a firewire client running, though the PCI OHCI Compliant IEEE394 Host Controller is installed and working. From this we conclude that the OS is set up for firewire devices, but that for some reason it is not being detected.
When we connect the LaCie dri've to a USB2 port on the machine, the device works fine; we can see the dri've, access it for directory & file lists, and read & write files to/from the dri've. We have also tried the LaCie on other machines fitted with USB2, with Win2000 & Win98 and it works fine. We therefore conclude that the LaCie does not have a fault itself. This hard dri've has its own power supply, and is not reliant on the power capabilities of either IEEE394 or USB2.
We have 'discussed' the matter with LaCie. They have asked us whether the IEEE394 port we are experiencing difficulty with is engineered only for DV, or whether it is engineered to be connected to mass storage device such as a hard dri've. We were unaware that ther were such differences with IEEE394, and we have no way of checking this; the Creative labs specification does not go into this detail.
Therefore, the questions we would like to pose to the community are as follows:
. Is this port known for certain to be engineered for the attachment of mass storage devices?
    2. Has any body actually attached a mass storage device to the external dri've box port or the port on the audigy PCI card?
    3. has anybody actually use da LaCie d2 extreme 200GB dri've on these ports?
    4. What set-up procedures were followed to get a LaCie to work?
Although we are 'newbie' status on this site we do have considerable experience of computers and computing going back to 966, and covering most types of machine that have been extant in the intervening period. This includews working with PC's since 983 and as systems engineers on Unix technical workstations. This problem does illustrate that no matter what ones experience level is, there is always something that can baffle, as this has done to us.
We'd like to thank in advance anybody who can contribute information to solve this problem, or indeed anybody who reads the posting and could point us in the right direction.
    Regards
    John Smith

I have been using a Maxtor One Touch external USB/Firewire hard dri've and a Canon digital camcorder on the Platinum Audigy Ex Firewire port for over a year with no problems except for the time the plug on the extension cable inadvertently got pulled out of the back of the Ex box when I moved some equipment around.
I am running Windows XP Professional SP2, and I upgraded to it after I started using the Audigy Platinum Ex Firewire port. No problems either before or after.

  • External Firewire drive does not mount on desktop now.

    Greetings everyone.
G5 dual, 4.6GB ram, OSX 10.4.10, external firewire drive, formerly worked fine, now is invisible.
Not the drive. New purchase, worked fine until a restart. Not the cable. Power is getting from the G5 to the firewire drive. Not the port. I also have a firewire card instlaled so I have three ports to connect it to (and two on the FW drive). No combination works. Not the computer, the FW drive also fails to appear on an iBook. Not the OS. I did a clean install to make sure.
I'm not a newbie. I know what I'm doing. Until now! DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius and Apple's Disk Utility cannot see the drive.
The FW drive is a Powerbook internal HD inserted into a case, purchased seperately.
At my wits' end. Can anyone help please.

I am suddenly having this EXACT problem. I have two Firelite firewire drives (one 60G and one 80G) that are suddenly refusing to mount on my older dual 1.25GHz G4 tower. They are also suddenly refusing to mount on my non-intel iMac. They will both mount painlessly on my new Intel MacBook Pro, but that's not much use, since the point of the firewire drives is to transfer files between these computers. I'm updating all of them to 10.4.10 to see if that's the issue...

  • Using Logic Pro 9 and Tascam DM-4800.  Can't get the Tascam to work as a control surface via firewire...   any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

The DM-4800 and Logic see each other, the firewire shows as 'locked' on both.   Can pass audio back and fourth, no automation from the Tascam though.   I know its either a midi setting or control surface settings...  but I'm stumped.   Newbie at Logic here.   Any ideas what to check?  Thanks in advance!

  • Macbook to macbook pro firewire

    hello,
i am a new user on this forum (and a bit of a mac newbie too). yesterday my macbook (purchased july 2007) decided to give up on me. we attempted various re-booting options but to no avail. clicking noises from the hard drive
while i do have a general backup, there were some items in my lightroom library i had not backed up (shame on me, i know). we attempted to hook up my macbook to my friend's macbook pro via firewire. his computer didn't even detect mine.
does this mean that the info on my disk is absolutely irretrievable? are there any other data recovery options? (under 200$?)
    thank you.

Clicking noises from the drive are not a good sign. It usually points to a hardware problem with the drive. If the MacBook won't mount as a target via Firewire, you can try removing the drive and mounting it via an external case or a drive adapter such as NewerTech's and see if that when used with a recovery tool - Disk Warrior or Drive Genius 2 for drive errors, Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering), or File Salvage (SubRosaSoft) for file recovery - but if the drive won't mount at all, most of these tools can do nothing. In that case sending the drive to a recovery service will probably be your only, and very expensive, option.
    Good luck.

  • Newbie question... Will LE 8.0.2 run alright on a new Mac Mini and SL?

    Hello.
Newbie forum user here, although I have been lurking these forums for a while, and I am pretty good with LE-8.
I am wondering if there are any Mac Mini/ Snow Leopard/ LE-8.0.2 users here?
My 2006 iMac has a screen flicker, and the repair is almost as much as a new Mac Mini with Snow Leopard and 4gb ram.
Does a new Mac Mini w/4gb ram running Snow Leopard have enough computing power and resources to run LE-8 OK?
I have an external Firewire (400) drive, and a FW interface (Alesis IO-26), but I see the new Mini has only Firewire 800.
Alesis has a Snow Leopard driver for the IO-26.
Are there issues using my current Firewire 400 devices, LE-8.0.2, Snow Leopard, on a new Mac Mini?
Any comments and pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I don't use a Mac mini but it should be fine with Logic 8.0.2 + SL
Here's an adapter for your firewire connections:

Does a new Mac Mini w/4gb ram running Snow Leopard have enough computing power and resources to run LE-8 OK?
Probably - it really depends on how you're planning on using it - are your projects mostly audio tracks, or heavy software instruments? A new Mac Mini has greater performance than your current iMac - look it up in MacTracker
My 2006 iMac has a screen flicker, and the repair is almost as much as a new Mac Mini with Snow Leopard and 4gb ram.
Try to get a quote from a component-level repair shop. It sounds like you went to an Apple store, that mostly swaps out major components. It could be a simple fix in the ATI or Intel video circuitry.

  • IMac firewire port is not working

iMac firewire port is not working
    Hi everybody, Happy New Year.
I am a 72 years old semi-newbie in video editing, because Iedit only 1 or may be 2 movies a year since 2007 and I have only very little computer knowledge.
I received a new 27” iMac as a birthday gift 14 months ago.  About 10 months ago, with help, I successfully use the Migration Assistant to transfer some datas from my old power G4 to the iMac including two Final Cut Express projects.  I had one project successfully done; burned to DVD and I save it with Print To Video. Last week, I have my second project done, I burned the sequences into DVD but unable to do a Print To Videodue to the iMac is not communicating with my Sony camcorders DCR VX1000, this is the same camcorder I used on the last job which was working a couple of months ago.As a result, I try to switch the Easy Setup with different Format and different Use; I refresh the Canvas window; I did a Mix down; move the Screen Saver to NEVER as well as the Energy Saver set to NEVER SLEEP.  I also trashed the preferences (plist) folders; run the Utility repair, I replaced the firewire cable (4 pines – 9 pines 800), but nothing work.  Up to this point, I think that there is no signal from the firewire port to the camcorder because I understand when the sequences is ready, the firewire is connected between the computer and the recording camcorder, the Print to Video is activated, then the word DV- IN should be seen on the recording deck screen. This time, I don’tread such words on the recording screen. Therefore, I think there’s no out going signal from the iMac to the recording camcorder and the iMac is not receiving signal from the recording camcorder. At this point, I try to connect my iMac to the power G4 to see if I can do some data transfer. Follow the procedures, I hook up the data transfer cable between the G4 and the iMac, I can the fireswire icon moving on the G4 screen but no indication on the iMac screen (there should be some indications in the source bar), this shows me the iMac did not recognize the G4 which worked on previous data transfer.  It looks to me the firewire port on my iMac is dead.  What has gone wrong? Could I accidentally disabled the firewire port by some magic keystroke? (i.e. accidentally fat finger some thing to make it stop working?  Oh, by the way, during the playing around, went to the Final Cut tool bar, I click the View >Video Out > Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Main, the result was a  black screen and the esc key was my rescuer - LUCKY LUCKY! Are there any other trouble-shooting techniques to apply before bringing to shop?  Please help!
Sorry for such a long statement, forgive me for unable to make it shorter.  Thank you for your patience. Thanks to all the folks in this board for being so helpful.
    p.s.

    Not sounding good.
If the system Profiler does not see it then there is a basic communication problem between camera and the Mac.
I'm thinking the Firewire port is the culprit as some 800 ports were faulty.
I'd suggest taking the Mac, cable and camera to your nearest Authorized Apple Service Centre and get them to diagnose the issue. eg. let them try to connect the two devices.
Right (control)click the Sequence icon in the Browser and select Item Properties, do the same for a clip.
You can also post screen shots for the Properties.

  • Latency(ASIO Buffer)Issues, Share Your Support! On Behalf of newbies......!!

I think most of us here gone through these problems. Especially a newbie who just started with his or her home Studio or Composition.
What we face most is a Delay on real time recording of the instruments or if you creating music through MIDInterface. We got a slite delay between Recorded and played Note. Thats the case, I'm also facing now. So i dedicate this thrade if its being popular to a newcomer(newbie) & a expert one who can help out of this problem.
I just bought a EMU0404(pci) sound card. and in reason its not so perfect when i playing it through my Sythesizer (Roland E-16) My PC Configuration is : P-IV 3.0 (HT), MOTHERBOARD D101 With Shared undedicated 256mb of my system RAM, 768mb OF DDR(400) RAM, A SEAGATE 80GB (SATA) HDD.
I have configured Reason (Steps for who dont know how to configure reason : Click Edit > Preferences > Select Audio from Page > Select the proper Audio Card Driver > if DirectX driver then Configure the Slider of Buffer Size , if a Asio Driver Like Emu-Asio, Asio4all or what ever it Installed > configure it through its Control Panel below of that page) at 440 samples of a output latency of 9ms. but still it have a slight latency problem.
And in Fruity Loops it's not working properly too. but we will discuss it later.
    I have some questions Like:
    a)What is Latency Compensation?
b)Do we Exceed the RAM Limit?
    c)Do we Exceed the Processor?
d)Do we have to buy a Workstation?
    and many more...........
I have problem with the Rewired part too, with Nuendo3 or Cubasis too. but still it will be after that.
So Please, The expertise here can share their experiences with us. Many thanks at advance.
Eagerly waiting for your sujjestion too Come....... From "Help Gurus"

You should be able to work using 2-5.8 ms (96-256 samples) w/ your 3GHz/HT PC (IIRC, HT and SATA may cause problems) using software instruments (and even lower settings when using Rolands HW synth as playback device). There are some extra latency coming from MIDI connections:
MIDI keyboard internal response to keystroke -- this is not instantaneous but on a good keyboard should be under 1 msec or so
    MIDI transport latency
    - If you're using MIDI cables, this is 1 msec per note in the chord, before the last note in the chord sounds. In other words, for a 6-note chord, the first note is delayed by 1 msec, the second by 2, etc., to the 6th note that is delayed by 6 msec.
    - If you're using MIDI over a high-speed technology like USB, Firewire, or mLAN, there is still transmission latency but the per-note effect is far, far lower -- probably not measurable.
BTW, ASIO is maybe the best device driver for recording use for every system. IIRC, the E-MU WDM driver is not good at all. When you record using direct monitoring (monitor the dry signal only) then, there are normally no hearable latency but, when you want to monitor the wet signal (software effects/instruments added) then you need to use latency settings around 7 ms (4-10 ms) to get the delay avoided. This is not easily achieved when you have project w/ plenty of tracks and plenty of VST/DX effects/instruments added/in use and you want to play everythin in background while recording a new track).
    Some thoughts for your guestions:
    a) I suppose you'll find a brief explanation for this by googling around. In generally, latency compensation (if available) is done automatically (VST/DX plug-ins) so you don't need to worry 'bout it, or set manually (as like in Sonar 6 for ASIO latency when you set the offset where the recorded data is placed in timeline).
    b) RAM limit ? There are known limits as like 2GB/3GB/4GB for program/data space
--> Cubase has well known (~1.5 GB) RAM limit http://forum.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=57331 (! continue to the another thread (link in 8th post))
--> you may need to enable IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE set in executables image header (see instructions from Cubase.net forum link)
--> you need least 1-2 GB RAM to get most sample based instruments working
--> low amount of RAM like you have there, remember set the virtual memory large enough
--> VST/DX effects and typical VST/DX instruments won't consume much RAM (only sample based does)
    c) CPU usage can be controlled by latency settings ...
When you record using plug-ins w/ 'software' monitoring (the way you can hear the plug-ins too), you need to set latency low (~5 ms) to get rid of delay between keypress and heard audio. You have only some methods you can use in this case to get the CPU usage down --> if you have plenty of tracks (w/ plug-ins) playing in background then you may get the CPU usage high --> pops/crackling/dropouts --> freezing tracks is good method then or bouncing (converting) MIDI tracks w/ software instruments to audio tracks, etc. Normally single tracks aren't a problem... you can use 2-5 ms latency settings then w/o troubles.
When you are doing mixing, you can use much higher latency settings (20 - 100 ms).
    d) what do you mean by Workstation ... if just a prebuild DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) then aren't those normal PCs/MACs too? If you mean those hardware recording systems then, isn't that a bit expensive path for a E-MU 0404 owner?
ATM, problems comes from latest technology as like from SATA/RAID controllers, PCIe bus (graphics), FireWire Controllers, etc. (like in forums here, these have been mentioned many times along with X-Fi issues).

  • Newbie question - technique???

I am new to flash but have been programming C and assembly
for years... I have a template that I purchased and have a couple
    of questions.
    1. Template is found at
    http://www.studio4creations.com/design/
Make sure to click on any of the 4 windows to see the stage
area that I want to load other info into.
    2. The size of the template is rather large and I wanted to
build more pages, but am concerned about the total size...
    a. so I thought about making each new page a separate movie
clip and loading it into the lower portion of the template
    b. or should I use html for the remaining pages? I do have
some music and sounds that I wanted to keep playing and if I use
html for the underlaying pages, the sound will turn off unless I
open in a new window, but that looks cheezy!
    c. what technique would you recommend to get around the size
limit and still have additional pages that could be added? Stay in
flash or use html (still have the sound issues)
    3. If I make more movie clips - can I get them to activate
and load from a line of text on the parent page?
    a. what functions in AS would you recommend using. I see that
there are many for loading and unloading movies and is there any
pitfalls that I should be cautious of?
    4. Also the original flash designer left some variables in
the code like S1 and S2 which look like strings to me where they
are used, but I cannot find out where they are initialized or
loaded. Any thoughts or suggestions where I might look. I have
looked thru most of the AS and didn't find it... Also the code is
not commented very much so being new to flash I am wading my way
    thru it.
    5. Any good references to get up to speed with flash quickly
for someone that has programmed in C before?
Anyway - thanks for letting a newbie to flash ask some
questions that may be rather elementary...
    Blessings!
    Tim

Rule of thumb: newer and faster is better. But, depending the complexity of your needs you may be OK with an older Mac. Some glitches that happen in a live performance are due to loss of communication with USB or Firewire inputs, so make sure they're secure. I recently upgraded from a 2010 Mac Mini 2.6 dual core with 16 GB RAM, which was used live for nearly four years, to the latest Mac Mini 3.0 i7 with 16 GB RAM and a 500 GB SSD. I was getting an occasional stuck note with the older one. The new one is rock solid. Some of my patches may have up to a dozen channel strips mapped to three keyboards. The Mini is mounted in a rack next to a MOTU Ultralite Hybrid. It is a good idea to map a panic button on your keyboard to controller # 123(all notes off). Also, you might want to invest in a battery backup power supply(APC, Cyberpower, etc.-$40-$60) to protect your Mac against power loss, which can damage you hard drive.

  • Newbie - use camera for video and external microphone?

    Hi,
This is a totally newbie question, but I'm a total newbie to the video part of the mac universe.
I want to use a camcorder to "stream" live video into iMovie (which will record it to the hard drive), and use an EXTERNAL microphone, plugged into the microphone port of the computer, as the audio source (I want to use a good mic).
Will iMovie support doing this? Is it automatic that the external mic overrides the mic on the camcorder?
    Thanks,
    Dmitri
P.S. this is part of a bigger question, which is, how to get the best possible audio using a standard (cheap) camcorder. I haven't bought a camcorder yet, and am open to getting one that can take a good mic through a line-in. Any suggestions? - Thanks, D

I wrote a reply to your earlier post ..but either the system went offline, or some other glitch occurred, and the post didn't appear. So I'll try to answer your earlier message and the one just above.
Congratulations on getting the camera, by the way!
"..play video through camera" option in the preferences, which MUTES the sound in iMovie.." ..Yes, this has been standard in iMovie from the earliest versions. There may be a slight delay between the audio you hear straight from the camera and the audio coming out of your Mac. To stop the annoyance of hearing the audio separately and slightly out-of-sync (..you'll find that the video on the Mac lags very slightly, too, during import..) you can turn OFF the Mac's audio with that preference.
"..I assume this goes away if I unplug the firewire cable.." ..er..? You mean that the preference switches back when you unplug? I can't remember: try it. But don't unplug the FW cable in the middle of an import!
What I was previously trying to post was:
"..instructional/promotional videos to display online.." ..You don't say if you'll be walking around to do these demos, or if you're demonstrating computer software. If walking around you might want to use a "gun" mic to point at you, or a tie-clip mic, so that it's always clipped to your clothes ..but that will trail a cable to the camcorder unless you use a radio mic. [..And you've now bought a tie-clip mic; well done..]
If you're doing demos of computer software, then you probably wouldn't need a camcorder at all, but just a "screen-recorder" application like 'Snapz Pro' or 'iShowU'. In that case, you'd just want a simple mic to stand on your desk, to record your speech as you work your computer, and for adding extra narration afterwards.
I still don't understand why you want to capture directly to iMovie. If you're using a camcorder, surely you'd want to capture to tape, in case you need to do three or four "takes" of the same material ..and then you only need to import, and fill up your hard disc with, the best of those takes.
And if you're recording a computer screen, then you wouldn't capture with iMovie at all, but with one of those other programs, above..

  • Please help about firewire card

hi i have to buy one audiocard firewire for my PowerBook
I need to buy it soon before i go in holidays !
    please council to me :
is better the Presonus Firebox , or the Focusrite Saffire ??
    I use logic pro 7.1
    is much apreciate help !!
    grazie !!!

This is a uk leading magazine editor reply to me,
    Hi Ken,
I just reviewed the Saffire unit and it seems very good for the price, particularly the mic preamps, which are based on the Focusrite Green series. If you can't afford RME or one of the other big interfaces, then Saffire seems like a good choice and the included plug-ins are pretty good too other than the guitar amp simulator, which is somewhat rudimentary.
And i've just place my order after reading all this review...
    Saffire Reviews
    Play - UK Magazine - July 2005
"Combining the I/O control in SaffireControl with the kind of pre-amp quality you'd expect from Focusrite, and the awesome tracking and monitoring plugs that require zero CPU from your computer, means it's true - you really can simulate a professional recording session in the comforts of your own bedroom, and all for under £350. For me, that's not just a giant step, that's the moon and back!"

"The package also offers a flexible software application called 'SaffireControl', which enables you to perform a number of nifty functions."
"One thing I liked a lot was Focusrite's obvious desire to make Saffire appeal both to seasoned pros and newbies alike. When using these plug-ins, you can toggle between user-friendly templates for vocals, guitars, pianos and other instruments, or open up the plug-in and get into more specific tweaks with conventional controls."
"Focusrite have even made this simple with a 'float' button that keeps the control surface open at all times."
"It gets better, as monitor reverb can also be set up to aidthe recording process. Again, this is an adjustable control that allows you to set an amount (dry/wet mix), a room size, the diffusion level and a clever tone control, which filters various. The single dial is capable of producing low-pass, hi-pass and band-pass tone, so finding a useful setting shouldn't be a problem."
"Using this system, and the handy labels on the outputs themselves, Saffire is capable of producing surround mixes in both 5.1 and 7.1. In fact, you could make almost any system you wanted, including direct feeds for stereo monitors and a sub bass unit for example."
"There's a lot to like about this box. It sounds great, does what it's supposed to and yet has plenty of tricks up its sleeve. SaffireControl is focusrite's ace in the pack here, and is designed to appeal to both the novice and the experiences user."
"I suspect Saffire will do very well. Despite looking like a departure from their existing range, Focusrite have actually drawn from their strengths here by combining their M-Box experience with years of proud dynamics processing history, and it's a winning combination."

“Saffire redefines the use of FireWire interfacing, providing a unique DSP input processing system, software mixing and integral VST/Audio Unit effects. Most importantly, however, despite adding considerably more functionality than the Mbox, the Saffire’s retail price still falls under the £350 mark … it’s a lot of interface for a relatively small outlay.”
“Pleasingly, the unit seems to have been put together with an informed understanding of the demands placed on an audio interface during recording:”
“By having eight outputs, the Saffire is clearly equipped for surround applications; however, by having four separate stereo outs, Saffire also enables you to configure separate headphone and monitor mixes (something impossible to achieve with basic, two-output audio interfaces).”
“SaffireControl, however, takes this idea one stage further by using the software to access Saffire’s DSP chip – thereby opening up the potential of processing a signal as it ‘goes to tape’.”

  • Can FMLE use Firewire as a source input?

This is a follow up of my last thread. I am needing to take a composite a/v source and input it into a laptop to bring into FMLE and then stream that out. Can the current version of FMLE take firewire video and audio as a source input?
If so, can anyone recommend a converter? I'm looking at one by Grass Valley (the company that makes EDIUS) that seems like it might work. Here's the link to it.

Sorry I posted this and then started reading some of the replies. I did see them as I am newbie here.
Looks like the only solution at this time is to export the data to a csv file, open it in numbers and use the numbers file as the source for the mail merge.
Would it be possible to have FileMaker then run an applescript ? or automator script to automatically convert the CSV file to numbers and then rename that Numbers file so that it is consistent and can be reused by the Pages "template" for subsequent documents to be used based on this template?
