Firewire not re-mounting iPod 

I have seen people having problems with Firewire and their iPods. So thought I would also post my problem.
I have an iPod G4 and it has serious Firewire mounting problems. It will only mount once after a boot-up, if disconnected and reconnected it will only charge the iPod and won't mount it again. To get the iPod mounted using Firewire again I have to reboot, sometimes it will mount if I swap to USB then back to Firewire. I will mention it mounts the iPod fine when using my USB cable.
If there are a number of people with this issue Apple needs to address it!

  • Ipod not (always) mounting

I am having the same problem as some of the other users. I can no longer get my iPod to mount on my G4 (was 10.3.9 but have since upgraded to 10.4.3). When I plug in the firewire cable the apple logo appears, the hard drive starts running and then I get the OK to Disconnect message.
It's not the firewire cable as I can still recharge my iPod via the charger (I also reset the connection as per another thread on the same problem http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=177128&tstart=15
    I also tried:
    - Several ipod resets
    - Disk mode
    - Disconnect all FW devices, except the ipod
    - Apple's firewire troubleshooting recommendations (power off, etc.)
    - Disk Utility (does not see the ipod via firewire)
    - Deleted the com.apple.ipod.plist
    - restarting my mac
Eventually i did get the ipod to mount and used the Disk Utility to do a Erase (format), followed by a restore of the iPod updater. I seem to have problems with iPod Updater 2005-11-?? not workng so I trashed it and used the iPod Updater 2005-09-23.
Twice I got the message: no sysinfo file on the ipod disk during all of this but I still some how got the iPod software restored. It's hard to track of what's really going on because iTunes is also trying to do it's thing as well.
I reimported my files. Used my iPod. Later when I came back same problem. I plug it in and get the OK to Disconnect message.
Since I first posted this problem I have upgraded to 10.4.3. The same problem persists.
One last comment: on two or three occassions the ipod has mounted. The next time it won't. Can't figure it out for the life of me.

It looks like the latest updater: iPod Updater 2006-01-10 may have fixed the problem.

  • Ipod will not re-mount after unmounting

this has been a problem with every ipod i have plugged into my G5 via firewire (doesn't matter which port). I have reinstalled os x twice and it has not solved any problems. The problem is as follows:
After turning on the computer, I can plug my ipod in, and it will mount. If I unmount it and try to re-mount it by plugging it in, it does not re-mount. I am using 10.4 and the same problem was happening since 10.3. If I restart the computer, I can get it to remount. When I plug it in after it has been unmounted, it's not detected in system profiler or in disk utility.
    Heres the strange part.
When I plug another firewire device in and use it, the ipod mounts itself and works again until unmounted. when I try to re-mount it with the FW device still plugged in, it won't remount, but, I can unmount the other firewire device and re-mount it, and then the ipod will remount.
This is probably the most screwed up issue ever. someone fix it!

  • PC does not recognize Ipod - Can't mount IPOD error message

    Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone experienced the same problem with their Ipod as I have. I have tried to play songs on my Ipod through the shuffle songs function but it does not work. The Ipod tries to play one song; however, it will not play it and then it will continue to the next which won't play either and this continues until I just shut off my Ipod. I have tried resetting it and also reinstalling Itunes but it does not help the problem.
A second problem is that my Windows PC does not recognize my Ipod when I plug it in. I have tried so many things to try and solve this including trying to restore my IPOD using the updater but when I keep getting the error message "Can't mount IPOD".
If anyone knows what I can do to try to fix this I am greatly in your debt!
    Thanks!

I had the same problem. Now I have many new ones. Here goes the chain of events 1st iPod did the same exact thing:
    1. Was going along my marry way listening to music
    2. Music stops playing
    3. I look to find my iPod cycling throughe very song but playing none... for an hour.
    4. I turn it off.
    5. I get home to attempt to restore it but when I plug it up to the computer, it is not recognized, cannot mount, ect.
    6. I continue trying to find a way, then it stops going to the "Do Not Disconnect" screen.
    7. Well I try it later on today, like 20 mins ago and it does it! Yay! but then it resets itself and it now rests on the apple logo and Windows does not recognize the USB device.
Oh yeah, did I mention I made the trade and got this one SATURDAY. Yeah so it's already broken.
    any suggestions?

  • Replacement Ipod 1.4 not recognized on PC and Updater "Can't mount Ipod"

I just received a replacement Ipod mini 1.4 which is formatted for Mac. When I run the most recent version of the updater, I get an error message that states "Can't mount IPod".
My Ipod no longer shows up in the "My computer" menu when I connect it to my PC, the only place it shows is in the actual usb hub in the device manager.
I tried all the actions in the following link to no avail (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711).
    Please help!
Note: I am leaning toward the illiterate side of computer literacy so please bear with.
2nd Generation Ipod mini 1.4   Windows XP Pro

the same thing happened to me, and no, itunes doesn't recognize it.
ephpod also doesn't recognize it, and neither does ipodwizard. i removed itunes and installed 6.0.5 and that also doesn't recognize it.
i downloaded an older ipod updater exe (from 3-23, before it became integrated into itunes 7) and even that won't recognize it.
i went back to itunes 7, and when i run an itunes diagnostic i get all green lights except the bottom, which means itunes can't tell that it's hooked up.
but i see it in my computer, and the details still say that it has the data on it.
also, when i try to use it normally there are no songs on it. the details say 0 songs, etc, but still says 22gb of space taken.
i'm running windows xp, service pack 2, itunes 7, and am using a 5g 30gb video ipod. the ipod says that it is firmware version 1.2

  • Changing iPod drive letter fixes "could not mount ipod"

So the problem I was having is that although my Windows XP SP2 machine could see my iPod nano as a drive, whenever I tried to use iPod Updater or iTunes, they could not connect/recognize the device. iTunes would simply not see that I had the device, while the updater would freeze for a good 5 - 10 minutes before giving me the "could not mount ipod" error. I tried everything, selective startup, windows update, made sure that I did indeed have USB 2.0 hardware, made sure that when I connected the ipod that Windows Device Manager said it was a "Standard ENHANCED USB Hub," restarted ipodservice, formatted ipod using windows, and probably a few other things. Still, although Windows could see the ipod just fine, apple's software just could not. I could even copy files to and from the device just fine! If only we didn't need iTunes to copy music. :P
Well, one thing I suspected it could be is that with my computer, my primary hard drive (and I only have one) is mysteriously drive letter "D" while when I plugged in my iPod it took on the holy "C" drive letter. Could this be a problem? Possibly, but not likely I thought. So I tried some 3rd party software which emulated the ipod software and I got an error message. First that it appeared my ipod was not formatted (which it was) and second that it "could not create :\ipod_control". First thing I thought was, where is the drive letter? The software isn't even looking for the ipod in C:\, it's looking nowhere! So what I did it changed the ipod's drive letter from C to something else and viola, it worked.
So it seems the iPod may not like it when it is named C, or there was some conflict with the iPod using the C drive letter since, I'll admit, I used to have two hard drives and the other one used to be C. Could also be a bug, who knows.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Ah, the Drive Letter C problem again.
The iPod software and iTunes will not recognize the iPod if it is assigned to drive C. Changing the drive letter to a higher one not used by other drives will solve the problem.

  • Firewire not showing....tried all the usual

    Hi Folks
Have been searching around the community but can't find an answer to this, so I thought I'd try asking.
I have an iMac core Duo 20" (the white one)running on Tiger (all updates done)
I have had it for about 2 years and only recently have I tried to use the firewire port for something.
My friend gave me some data on and old ipod which works on his macbookpro and gave it to me with the firewire cable. The ipod charges and gets power through the firewire port, but will not mount or be recognised.
I had a look in the "About this mac" section under firewire and it is just blank. Not even a "No firewire detected" or anything.
I have tried all of the usual things like reseting the PRAM etc. but none of it seems to work.
The ipod works on another machine so it can't be the ipod or cable. The ipod also works via USB, but the battery drains in under 3mins when using it in disk mode.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try?
    Thanks
    Graeme

    Hello Graeme
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).+
+3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.+
+4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.+
+5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.+

  • Brand New IPod Mini - Can't mount iPod from IPod Updater

Just bought a brand new IPOD mini. When I try to use the IPod Updater, I get an error message "Can't mount iPod".
Windows XP Services shows IPOD services is started.
The IPOD appears in My computer as "Removalable Disk".
Also, my IPOD does not appear in iTunes.

This is a very reasonable strategy. It has been previously used for USB problems with battery charging.
See this link: The iPod Battery Unplugged..
A synopsis of it is as follows:
"For best results, try not to use computer ports to charge your iPod. USB is especially sensitive to how many devices are on it and what the resulting bus voltage is. It may even display the charging icon but not be adding much to the battery. USB versions prior to 2.0 will not charge your iPod (and probably be too slow for its other functions). Even USB 2.0 is limited to 700 milliamps and an iPod "likes" to see one full amp for charging, plus some to spin the HD while mounted. Some (early) iPod models will not charge from USB, period. Some PCs use 4-pin Firewire cables (all Macs are 6-pin) which carry no charging voltage, so they won't work at all for recharging and can allow your iPod to run down and cause serious problems while updating firmware, restoring, or loading songs. Both USB and Firewire require the iPod to be mounted by your computer as an external drive, which means the iPod's HD is spinning, using some of the juice that the battery might like to have. And if the computer sleeps or is turned off, the battery won't charge and in some cases will actually drain through the port circuits. Bottom line: if your ports are not doing a good job of charging your battery, use the wall adapter to charge for several cycles before questioning the battery's credentials. If you have a new iPod which only comes with USB, don't panic; it can work fine. But if you do experience problems, either take everything else off the USB bus (except mouse & keyboard) and/or get an AC adapter."

  • Can`t mount ipod and format error

installed updater 2005-11-17 and itunes6 but my 3rd gen 20gb ipod behaves strange. iPod had been unused for a couple of months following a house move. Ipod SETTINGS>ABOUT says 0 (none!) songs - about 14gb used 5 free. Updater just seems to "hang". Both usb and firewire.
If i start updater and connect iPod i regularly get "cant mount ipod" - but if I connect it and walk away for a while (ipod then appears in my computer as a removable drive) then updater reports ipod details as N/A ( like serial no. - N/A name - N/A format -N/A) then suggests to restore.
After a lengthy period i get "disk format error" (or similar wording.
Disk Mode also unhelpful as is Drive Letter change.
Have tried all on iPod 101.
Only solution appears to be hooking upto a mac which i dont have !
Surely I can format with some other software on a PC.
Why does it take so long for Updater to do something.
Updates BOTH my daughters 4gb Minis in a flash !
Same responce on 3 different PCs !
    Any Advice ?

If windows can see the iPod check what drive letter it has allocated to the iPod and make sure it is sensible and does not clash with any other drive (i.e. not A: - C:, not a drive letter used by another device or a mapped network drive). Try using a free letter such as I:
If windows does not see the iPod (even in disk mode) then try uninstalling and reinstalling the iPod software.

  • ITunes will not recognize my iPod, but windoes DOES.

When i plug my 30gig iPod into my pc via usb, windows recognizes it, and it even prompts iTunes to pop up. After this however, nothing happens.
I cannot get iTunes to recognize my iPod, therefore cannot update it.
I have tried all of the steps on the troubleshooting guide on apples website, and itunes still will not update my ipod. I also even switched the letter of the iPod drive as directed by another post.
    Please help!

    Hello,
Yes, I can help you with the "can't mount iPod" issue. Check out these steps:
Eject your iPod from computer (for now).
    Close Updater and iTunes programs.
    Restart the computer.
Put your iPod into disk mode.
Connect your iPod to your computer again.
See if your Updater works for your iPod.
Also, if that didn't help with the problem, your iPod's hard drive might be out of place, if you're getting this kind of message. If you suspect so (especially if you hear strange sounds and clicking coming from the iPod), then try this:
Tap your iPod firmly on both sides several times, using your hand. This might work for you to tap your iPod'd hard drive back into place. It's not just a joke, since it works for lots of people, if their problem was the iPod's hard drive being out of place.
    I hope this helps!
