Firewire on iMac G3 (Generally)

Why does the firewire die on G3's? I am on my third G3 (CRT) and on each of them, the firewire has died, and I can find no logical answers on the Apple Store websites, or on these discussion boards.
Can somebody please reply to tell me that there is good news, and whether I should fork out the AU$ 2650 to buy a G5, with a possiblity that the firewire may very well die on them just the same?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 15 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release. You will lose some of your settings so do this only if all the above fails.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
Good Luck!
Cheers!

Just in case you have'nt seen this.

Can I use my Firewire 800 iMac as the TDM monitor for my MBA thunderbolt? Will the thunderbolt to firewire adaptor allow this to work?

If the iMac is a 21-inch model, it's not available that way but is with a product such as ScreenRecycler.
If the iMac is a 27-inch model, use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.

  • HOWTO Firewire and IMAC

    Dear Friends,
What use FIREWIRE in IMAC. Please help I am a new to MAC.
    Thanks,

Also, see http://www.usb-ware.com/firewire-vs-usb.htm Note that FW800 is about twice as fast as FW400, which this page reports results for. IMO, USB is fine for slow input and output devices: mice, keyboards, printers, etc. FW was explicitly designed for high speed data transfer.

  • Firewire to iMac?

How do I attach my Epson R2400 photo printer to the new iMac 27" since there isn't a firewire port on the iMac?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can connect that printer to your iMac using USB and it will work as it did with FireWire.
Another option you have is to buy the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, so you will be able to connect your printer to the iMac using FireWire > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r?fnode=51

  • FireWire on iMac G5

Has anyone had an issue with the firewire ports on the iMac?
I was trying to get my wife's iMac to recognize an iPod connected to one of her firewire ports. The first time I hooked it up I was able to get to the restore screen and run that process, it took over 45 minutes on a 15gig iPod. Then tried to launch iTunes and the iPod was not displayed. Tried to unmount the drive and an error was displayed stating that there was a file in use and the drive could not be unmounted.
I then took the iPod to my daughters G3 iMac and was able to run the restore option is under 5 minutes. I then took the iPod back to my wife's computer and changed the port that the firewire cable was plugged into and it worked fine. Any ideas would be very helpful.
We have already been through a two week ordeal to have her logic board replaced, still don't have a root cause on that. And if I need to take it back into the shop I would like to do it while she is traveling and not depending on the iMac.

I had the same issue once with both my ports on my G4 imac. after apower outage. try unhooking all periferals except keyboard and mouse, and shut down the computer, and unplug for 5-10 minutes (go make some tea, or a sandwich) plug the cord back into it, and start up the computer. after it is completely logged in and everything is cool, try hooking up your ipod, with itunes not opened. it should start up itunes and you will see your ipod. when mine did it, it would charge the ipods but they would not show up on the desktop or in itunes, but I got an error message when I removed the cable. after the shutdown method was used, I never had a problem on it since. also, if I may ask, why are restoring your ipod so often? I have a 2 1/2+ year old gen 2 and have only done one system restore on it, with the exception of the random upgrades that come out for it. you should limit it to one macs itunes, but set it up for an external harddrive for the others.

  • FireWire from iMac to a Mackie Onyx 1220 needs a driver?

I am running FireWire from my iMac to a mackie ONYX 1220 mixer. I shouldn't have to install any special drivers because the Mackie 1220 uses the core audio drivers of the iMac. Yet, I get no low frequencies coming from the speakers. When I unplug the FireWire mid song and then plug it back in, I get the full, beautiful sound I'm looking for for about 1 second. Then it goes back to only the high end frequencies.
Anybody have any answer for me? I took this mixer to a Mackie service center and there's nothing wrong with it. It works fine on other computers.
    Thanks, Tom

Hi, I imagine you've been there, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Adding firewire to imac 233

    Hello,
I have an iMac 233 i've updated it to Mac OS X 10.2 and i've updated my memory to 256. I was wondering if there is any thing out that that i could hook up a firewire port to my mac.i've been looking around and been finding externial once and internal. i dont think that the i could use the internal ones. And if there is an externial firewire port would it hook up to just a USB Port? Thanks for taking the time and reading my post. If you would know anything please let me know. Thanks again
    Keith

    Hi patchworkhippie16,
    Welcome to the forum.
The iMac 233 (Bondi Blue) does not have a firewire port and you cannot add one. You're limited to only USB. All external peripherals (hards disks, printers, cd/dvd writers etc) will have at least one usb port.
If you have any further questions I would suggest you post them in the "Using your iMac (CRT)" forum which can be found here:

  • Firewire problem (iMac 20" Core 2 Duo)

    Hello.
I've bought iMac 20" (Core 2 Duo) two days ago and just realized that FireWire doesn't work at all. Both of my external hard-drives simply don't mount when connected via FireWire (USB works fine and both USB and FireWire on other Macs too).
I tried to hold CMDOPT+PR while starting and left the computer disconnected from all cables for a couple of minutes. That didn't help.
    Could someone please help me?

Well, for one thing it appears that your firewire port is working fine. It is reporting a connection with your hard drive. The question is, why does the drive not mount on your desktop? Just to satisfy that the drive has not mounted, please double click on your internal drive icon and look at the top left to see if your external drive shows up there (sometimes I find that things that should show up on the desktop seem to go missing, but they will show up in a Finder Window, although I have not known this to happen in the latest upgrade of Tiger).
If it is not in the volumes list, launch Disk Utility (it is found in the Utilities folder that is in your Applications folder). Again, look at the list on the left and see if your drive is listed under your internal drive (it should be). If it is listed but not mounted, select it by clicking on it in the list making sure it is highlighted. Then look for the "Mount" icon at the top and click on it. This should cause your disk to mount.
Whether it mounts or fails to mount at this point I would go back to Disk Utility, select your external disk and ask it repair the disk (you can do this even if the disk is not mounted). If the disk did not mount before, try again now.
    Good Luck!
    Griff

  • Extremely slow FireWire on iMac 24" (Early 2008)

Up until recently, my external FW800 drive (NewerTech MiniStack v3) has worked flawlessly with my iMac.  Very fast transfer speeds.  However, that is no longer the case.  The drive spontaneously unmounts, and file transfers on both FW800 and FW400 are slower than a floppy disk.  No joke!  Checking Activity Monitor, the read/write speeds are all over the place from 0 bytes to 40MB/second and anywhere in between.  While attempting a file transfer, the iMac becomes completely unresponsive when trying to use any program.  This was not a problem in the past.  The iMac was very responsive even with file transfers taking place in the background.  Now it is impossible to work on the iMac until the painfully slow file transfer is complete.  I think this is in part due to the halted disk activity from both drives.  If I connect the external drive to my Power Mac G4, it works flawlessly on both FW400 and FW800.  Both drives check out fine with Disk Utility.  Any idea as to why the FW400/800 ports on the iMac are acting so strangely?  I reformatted and reinstalled Snow Leopard thinking it might be a corrupted file, but the problem still exists.  Any suggestions?  Do I have a potential motherboard failure?  If so, the iMac is still covered under AppleCare until June 2012.

Try a SMC Reset. Please follow the instructions carefully.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Digital Video format for iMovie and iMac in general

I recently purchased a video capture product for my pc to digitize all the analog videos from when my kids were younger. The capture works great but, when I move it to the Mac (10.6.2), I'm told that the files (avi etc) can't be played.
Is the problem more likely to be on the Mac side or the PC side? Any guidance re this process (product and format to use) would be greatly appreciated!
    TIA,
    David

    David,
What exactly are you using for your video capture?
Your answer may be to use a video converter such as this one.

  • Which Firewire Cable to connect an iMac and a Mac mini ???

    Hi guys
What Firewire cable should I buy to connect an iMac G5 and a Mac mini G4 and use a partition on the mini as a Target Disk?
    I've read something about 4 pin, 6 pin, 9 pin... 400, 800
I have no idea what type of cable I have to buy and if it makes different about performance...
    Cheers!

No, you need a FW400 6-pin to 6-pin cable and they are all the same. FW800 has an entirely different connector and neither the iMac nor the mini have it. It might be called IEEE1394 or iLink on the package, but it is all FireWire 400 in stores generally. I have never seen a FW800 cable in a regular retail store.

  • IMac G4 flat panel 700 GHz firewire connection to MiniMac 1.42 GHz Power PC

Is it possible to connect firewire my iMac to my MiniMac and designate the MiniMac as the startup disk?I would like to use the iMac for a monitor, primarily, but would like to be able to use it for old applications.

Is it possible to connect firewire my iMac to my MiniMac and designate the MiniMac as the startup disk?
If you have one of the early G4 based Mac minis then this should work. If you have an Intel-based Mac mini this will NOT work.
You would need to boot the Mac mini in Firewire target disk mode.
Also be aware that you would be using the processing power and speed of your 700 MHz iMac G4... instead of the much faster processor in the Mac mini.

  • Epson Stylus Photo R1800: successful Firewire install on Intel iMac?

Has anyone been able to succesfully install the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 on an Intel iMac using the Firewire connection?
After installing the Intel drivers from the Epson website, if I connect the printer via the USB cable the printer and associated driver show up in the Printer Setup Utility just fine. But if I connect the printer via the Firewire cable I just see a printer named "E" in the printer setup utility and no R1800 driver at all.
Epson support just keeps instructing me to uninstall and reinstall the driver.
I've hunted around in the discussions here and have noticed some people having trouble with this particular printer, but I've been unable to establish whether anyone has been succesful with the Intel iMac/Firewire combination.
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I am printing with a firewire connection. I have an intel iMac. Prior to buying the R1800, I checked out Epson's site for new intel printer drivers. A new update has been posted with an alert about the bundled software that comes with the R1800-don't install it! And if it was installed there's an uninstall walk through. The software did not come anywhere near my new imac. I downloaded the new software and I am printing with a firewire connection. I have one issue with the download. I can't print CDs because the application is on the original software cd. I contacted Epson and asked if I could install just the CD print software and not the printer driver. I will be waiting for an answer. I installed the software on a powerPC imac tiger. The printer is firewire connected and there are no printing problems, I can even print CD labels.
    I will post epson's response.
