FireWire on MacPro - some disks mounting, some don't

Hello
I seem to have a FireWire problem on my Mac Pro.
I have a removable hard disk case from WiebeTech (FW 800 and USB 2.0) that has refused to let me mount disks since I got the Mac Pro. USB works, but not FW. I thought it must be a problem with the case. WiebeTech thinks so too, that the bridge is broken. I also have an external FW 800/400 naked hdd dock from the same maker, and it hasn't given me any problems. Until today, anyway.
Today it refused to mount. I also found I can't mount my external cased FW 400 hard disk.
I went to the System Profiler, and it didn't display the FW bus. Odd.
I then ran the Apple Hardware test. No problems reported. I rebooted and did a safe boot. Logged in.
Now the System Profiler showed the bus, the hard disk attached to the FW 800 naked hdd dock mounted, and the iPod mounted as well. When the bus was gone, nothing mounthed, of course.
Now I just have the problem with the external FW 400 and removable FW 800 disks in the WiebeTech case.
But the above leads me to believe that the problem is not with the disks or dock connectors, but with the Mac hardware or software.
I have done the latest firmware upgrade for the Mac Pro.
Any hints?

I have had a lot of problems with a MyBook 500GB external drive from WD. Connecting via USB 2.0 is fine, always works. Connecting via Firewire 800 is a problem.
If I restart my mac with my two FW 400 drives and my FW 800 connected, only the FW 400's mount. When I unplug my FW 800 and remove the power cord. Then plug in the FW 800 cable, and then plug in the FW Drive power cord it "sometimes" mounts. That seems to be the order.
I saw some posts elsewhere that outline issues with the Firewire buss and sharing between the front and the back. Some recommend to get a PCI firewire card and put it in. It really should work as designed; I think these guys had power issues and other file copy problems. I have none of that - its all about mounting the drive.

Well I believe I have resolved my problem. My iPod was on auto, I don’t know how it determines what order to copy the songs but it appears to select them in the same order every time. What seams to have been happening is it would be copying songs just fine until one song on a Curtis Mayfield CD and this song was causing the problem? The G4 would start making noise, I would get the error message and no further songs would be transferred. I switched to manual mode, transferred all songs except the one and every thing is fine. By the way, the entire Mayfield CD was from iTunes, any ideas as to why this one song is a problem?
And thanks for the one suggestion anyway.

  • When I change password and sync to azure - some outlook 2010 work, some don't with password (staged migration)

I tried to cram as much info as I could in Subject.
We are running Staged Migration setup still until we convert to cloud completely.
Well, it happened a few times but usually I have to wait for couple of days and then it turns out good.
I change my password on local premisses AD.  Then it has to sync to Azure cloud environment, typically within 3 hrs.
I have two work laptops with 2010 Outlook and 2013 respectively.  They are good.
I have two home laptops running with hard disk BIOS encryption and they are good also.
But there are two more laptops that will not acknowledge a password change.  Keeps prompting it to enter it and I know it's accurate but it won't go through.  I can login using same keystrokes to login.microsoftonline.com.
I tried deleting the profile and OST File on one of them, no luck.
What would be the next step?

    Hi,
In this case, are you working with one account, or multiple accounts?
If it's only with one account, on the two affected machines, go to Control Panel -> Credential Manager -> Windows Credentials, find and delete the Outlook Credentials, then check if the problem persists.
If you are working with multiple accounts and some work fine but some don't, maybe the password hasn't been synced to Azure cloud yet, we may need to wait for some time and check the result again.

Mostly because you are not using any capital letters or paragraph returns and your post is difficult to read.

  • ITunes 11.3 some things add to library and some don't

I have iTunes 11.3.1 (2) (64 bit) and a Mackbook Pro 13" (early 2011 model) OS X 10.9.4. I moved my music, audiobooks, movies, podcasts, etc to a home server (Seagate Central) and created a new library. I was able to add my ring tones to iTunes as well as my audiobooks and about 600 of my songs. Some songs add and some don't. Doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason. I've imported m4a, mp3, m4p. The items that have imported and am trying to import come from the same iTunes Media/Music folder. I've tried adding both by folder and by individual file. I've also right-clicked a song and selected to open in iTunes and nada. I've also checked the Recently Added playlist and nothing is there as well. These same songs played when they were stored on my Macbook. I don't get it. I'll see a millisecond flash of the album but nothing happens. The only common factors I can see is that if it will let me play it in the finder it will let me add to iTunes. Also, it seems that 'older' stuff I added from CD from my older iPod days doesn't add. For kicks, I tried to copy and paste an album back to my MBP and it says I don't have permission but that happens with both ones that show up in the program and ones that don't. I'm the admin on both my laptop and the server. Grr. HELP!
PS: When I use Seagate's remote site I can listen to songs that won't play in my Finder or add.

I haven't seen this issue before but I have seen lots of posts here about issues with using iTunes with NAS.  General rule of thumb is iTunes is not guaranteed to play well with NAS.  For some it does, for others not.
My understanding is NAS uses its own software to interface with the computer's software.  This could well have been designed with Windows in mind and the drive you are using may be formatted NTFS for Windows and iTunes is having to trust the software 100% for interfacing.  Perhaps your files have illegal characters for Windows naming convention.
Remember the game where people sit in a long row and whisper a message from one end to the other, then compare the results which almost invariably have been garbled in transmission? That's iTunes and your files over NAS.
Maybe some of this is iTunes fault but if you take this issue to an Apple Store I bet they will ask you why you aren't using a plain external hard drive.  If you use third party hardware then it is up to the vendor (who likely sells 95% to PC users) to ensure the interface works.

  • How come some of my JPG files show up broken and some don't in my assets panel?

I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS6 and when I create JPG files, some show up in the Assets panel of Dreamweaver and some don't.  I'm miffed as to why?  I've tried resaving them as JPGs to no avail.  When you try and insert the broken ones in Dreamweaver you just get the broken link box.  I've also tried to link to the source file to no avail.  So, please help!
    Dale

    Ben,
Thanks for the video.  I learned some new stuff about the assets panel that I've been using.  However, the problem still remains.  Some of the JPGs that I've created in Photoshop CS6 show up fine and some don't.  The same happens with Illustrator.  I did find a workaround for this though.  If you open up the JPGs in Fireworks and create a slice over the image and then export the selected slice, it does show up in the assets panel unbroken.  So far it works every time.  I don't want keep going to Fireworks though.  Adobe needs to fix this problem.  In CS4, I never, ever had this problem.
    Thanks again Ben...

  • Check marks, symbols... some songs have them some don't want do they mean

I have purchased a few songs from the iTunes Store, copied some from CDs etc. Some of the songs have check marks some don't, some have this "radio like signal" in front of them some don't. What do these things mean? My real problem is, is that I can copy the songs with the "radio like signal sign" in front of them to my ipod but the others I can't copy or move anywhere, not playlists or on to my ipod. What am I doing incorrectly? Help!

The check boxes have a number of uses: iTunes: Understanding the Symbols Next to Songs
Unchecked songs will be skipped when playing songs from the library or a selection. They will only play when individually clicked on.
Smart Playlists have an option that unchecked songs won't appear.
Unchecked songs will not be burned to CD.
The iPod has an option to only sync checked songs
The Genius & iTunes DJ features will ignore unchecked songs
Basically unchecking is a way of telling iTunes to ignore the item and exclude it from other automatic features.

  • Only some movies I have placed in iTunes "Movies" are viewable via Apple TV.  Why?  Also some movies have blue dots in front of their titles and some don't . Why?

Only some movies I have placed in iTunes "Movies" are viewable via Apple TV.  Why?  Also some movies have blue dots in front of their titles and some don't . Why?

Please understand I am a frustrated customer like you,  , but the availability of movies that have been shown before is dependant on licencing from the rights owners. Sky quite rightly have to pay the film studios for the ability to show to Sky's customers. As I understand it they purchase the right for a period of time, hence when the right expires then it has to be removed. The costing of the movies does reflect on the anticipated popularity of the programme, hence an older less popular movie might seem expensive but if not many people watch and pay that would be right. The apparent silliness of having movies in the store and on demand, allows those people who do not have a movie subscription to rent the movie on a one off basis. I agree that Sky seem to be licencing some programmes for shorter periods and it really upsets me when movies appear in buy and keep but not available to rent only. I recently queried Sky about Fortitude being available in OnDemand until 2022!, then of course found out that Sky owns the rights of the series. I can only say be careful if you are a movies subscriber and wish to watch a movie, not to select the Sky Store version if it is available in the Movies on Demand section. I recently wanted to watch a film that I found in Sky store at a cost, and just to be sure I searched for it and found it was to be shown on Channel 4 in a few days. I don't think we'll ever understand how such decision are made as to how long they licence movies for and how the charging model works with the film studios. Logically you would think that a smallish fee to have available indefinately and to pay the studio fee based on the number of rentals would be better, but that might be difficult to administer and Sky would have to have extra server storage fees, which they outsource. Hope that help you understand

  • How do I get album art work to download?  Some do and some don't.

How do I get album art work to download?  Some do and some don't.

Can you help me? I've been trying to download the art work for CD's that I downloaded from home. Thanks.

  • Can't sync all ringtones, some get sync, and some don't even though I clearly have them all checked.

I've created my AAC file and then changed it to m4r mode and then I copied it back to the tones section of iTunes. Everything is fine at this stage. Then when I try to sync all my tones, some get sync and some don't even though I clearly have all of them checked. So I click the all tones box instead and sync, then other tones which previously have not been synced are synced and those that were synced previously do not get synced. I've tried everything, from making duplicates of songs to even deleting my tones and re-syncing. I've taken over an hour to sync and still unsuccessful. Why is it so complicated just to sync a few tones? Is apple trying to discourage customers from using custom ringtones and only those from the iTunes store? Im so ready to just throw my phone... It's so much easier to transfer tones over using an android phone since I dont have to use some stupid software by android and sync when i can just drag and drop.
    SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!
    Thanks in advance

    What fixed it for me:
On your computer, open iTunes > My iPhone (or whatever name you gave your iPhone) > "Music" page
    Uncheck "Sync Music"
    Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
    Let it run and finish
Uncheck the box for every song, playlist, etc.
Click "Sync" button (bottom right) (This step may be unnecessary, but I did it and got the result I wanted.)
    Let it run and finish
Check the boxes for the music you want on your iPhone
    Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
    Let it run and finish
See if that doesn't work for you.  I tried a lot of things that did nothing, but this seems to have fixed it, and quickly.

  • Some alerts get caught by eventaction and some don't ...

Trying to find out why certain type of alerts get cought by eventaction and some don't.
Got all kinds of voltage errors, warnings and such and those get all the way to our Tivoli gateway.
I've disable a CPU on one of our box and i see it in the console but it never gets shipped to our Tivoli network.
Now i've enable ALL the errors in the Action i've setup so i would get everything sent out. I'm starting to run out of places to look.
If somebody has a clue or something (even documentation wise) i'm all for it.
    Thanks for you time.
    Eric

    Hi eberthiaume,
Already checked the log file ... its no where to be
found and that what is bothering me .. pretty strange
actually cause i can't see any filters on and i've
setup the Action so it takes all event from all the
servers every time and repeat each 10 minutes ....Do you mean the log doesn't exist at all, or that you never see your alarms in it?
I'm guessing the log is there, but when you trigger alarms for some hosts they appear as an entry in the log (and go to Tivoli)... but alarms from other systems never make it to the log (and never get sent to Tivoli).
    Here's a simple test:
    1) Trigger an alarm on an Agent that you know alarms don't appear for in EventActionHistory.log
    2) After you trigger the alarm and see it light up in the Console, switch to the "Alarms" tab for that Agent.
    3) Look for your alarm in that tab (press the refresh button a couple times if it doesn't show up in a few seconds)
If you see your alarm in the Alarms tab... but you don't see it in EventActionHistory.log within about 2 minutes.. then something is wrong (or misconfigured) with EventAction. If you don't see your alarm in the Alarms tab... then it's never making it into your SunMC Server's database... and there's something wrong with your Agent or Server. Go repeat steps 1-3 for an Agent that you've seen alarms from recently and confirm that if the alarm makes it to the Alarms tab it shows up in EventActionHistory.log soon after.
EventAction feeds off of the SunMC Oracle database.... if alarms don't make it to the database they will never make it to Tivoli either.
Based on what you find in the test steps you can decide if you should contact Sun support or Halcyon support.

  • Some DvD's work, Some don't?!

I have come across an irritating problem on a Macbook Pro 2009 model...
I am trying to watch DvD movies on it. Some DvD's work, some don't. Sometimes it just ejects the DvD automatically, sometimes it claims it's blank, and there are times when the thing actually works - for specific DvD's
I am a bit suspicious with this ordeal. I'm thinking it's the version of my operating system and there's a bug in it that causes some DvD's with certain specs to not work...
For example, the DvD for the actual Harry potter Deathly Hallows P1 movie works, but not the special features. The DvD for the movie "The Number 23" works, but not the one for the "Black Swan".
Thoughts? Broken reader? Bug that needs to be patched? or is Apple being bullies and preventing me from watching "burned" DvD's or something similar because I can't look at any dvd's with manually burned movies.

    Hi P,
Super drives are known for being picky about the discs they'll read. It's normally not what's on them, but the brand of disc, or sometimes even the speed it was burned. Do you have two of the exact same brand/model/speed of burned discs and one works while the other doesn't?

  • Hard drive volume appears in sidebar Favorites when new disk mounts

Hard drive on my 17” MacBook Pro Quad Core i7 (2.5 GHz, 8GB SDRAM OS 10.8.2) is partitioned into 4 volumes; I'll call them A-Mountain Lion startup drive, B-Personal, C-Work, D-minimal clean Mt. Lion for emergencies. Problem relates to my regular boot drive.
I have Finder sidebars set to show 8 or 10 folders in the "Favorites" section and have ticked all boxes in the "Devices" section. Most of the time I have no external disks, CDs, etc., connected to the MBP, so the Devices section generally shows my computer and the four partitions. So far, so good.
Lately, every time an external volume is mounted and every time a disk image is mounted, the Personal volume (B) of my internal drive, which is already showing under Devices, also pops up in the Favorites section of the sidebar. I remove it from the Favorites, but the next time an external disk or a disk image mounts, there it is again. It's always volume B, never A, C, or D.
I have tried everything I can think of to cure this odd behavior: Used Disk Utility (verify all disks/volumes; repair volumes; repair permissions; etc.), though nothing seemed wrong. I've run Disk Warrior on all volumes. I cleaned out everything possible on the startup drive (A) with the latest version of Onyx. I've repeatedly trashed the plists I could identify in my user Library that had "sidebar" or "finder" in their names. I've logged in and out; started and restarted; started with shift key down. Still, every time a new volume or disk mounts, up pops this extra volume B among the Favorites (where it shouldn't be). I checked and unchecked various combinations of sidebar items in Finder Preferences. I've Forced Quit the Finder. It doesn't matter whether all, some, or no devices are checked; when a new disk mounts, there's the extra volume B again.
I have only two other clues to add. (1) I created a new temporary user account on my startup drive (volume A), and this behavior did NOT occur in the new account. (2) This same behavior had arisen once before, a couple of months ago. I went through similar blind attempts to cure it then, but at some point I must have done something right because I it got fixed. For the life of me, I can't remember which of all the things I tried did the trick.
Many thanks to anyone who can shed light on this annoying behavior.

I can add a bit to my earlier description. I had said the problem did not occur in a new user account. Well, after using the new account for a while, it showed up. Eventually I erased the startup volume and installed Mountain Lion (plus updates to 10.8.2) fresh. I used migration assistant to transfer only my old user, pared down applications, and network settings -- no preferences, application support stuff. The old user carried over the problem. But I immediately created a new user and have been working from it for the past two weeks, very gradually opening apps, adjusting settings, etc., and testing for the anomaly at each change. In some cases I did move preferences from a backup clone, but was always careful to test after each addition. All was well for a week, until one morning I noticed the data partition had appeared in sidebar Favorites. So I'm back to where I was. I had been documenting each change or introduction I made. The only things my notes said from the day before the sidebar anomaly appeared was launching and struggling to activate QuarkXPress 9.3, and copying over my old prefs and settings for TextWrangler. I completely removed every trace of QXP, but the problem remained. (I did not remove TextWrangler because I just can't believe it could be the culprit -- but could it?)
I also noticed a similar (though maybe not identical) problem posted in another thread <https://discussions.apple.com/message/20591050#20591050>, but so far no answers there either.
