Firewire or USB backup hard disk for Intel Mac?

We are very happy with our Apple computers. Regularity I make backups on my and my family´s important files using at firewire hard disk. Now our neighbors bought an iMac with Intel processor. What backup hard disk should they buy?
1.8 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Many external hard drives and hard drive enclosures (if you want to put together your own external drive) are now using Combination chip sets that support both USB and FW ports. So I suggest looking for a Combo External Hard Drive and then your neighbor can hook it up either way.

  • How can I tell if I have the right restore disks for Intel Mac Mini

I have an "early 2006" (confirmed by S/N YM609***) Intel Mac Mini 1.66mhz Core Duo. I bought it used and the hard drive had been wiped. Both the HD and the DVD drive seem to work fine; hard drive passes SMART tests. I was able to boot using "Drive Genius" and can access the pre-install items like Disk Utility (and know that I need to use GUID formatting to create a bootable disk). Not knowing I could order restore disks from Apple I bought a set on eBay, p/n AHT VERSION 3A102 DISC VERSION 1.1 2Z691-5828-A, copyright 2006 on disks and included documentation (OS 10.4.6), but the install always fails 10-15 minutes along. I got the same results when trying to install via internal optical drive to a FW or USB external HD (told it to use GUID for the external HD), or external FW optical drive both to internal HD and to external USB hard drive. A friend tried to install full retail versions of 10.5 and even 10.6 for diagnostic purposes, using the built in HD and DVD drives, but those installs did not complete either; they did not try external drives. Is that the wrong restore version for this model, or even if the right "generation", does a set of restore disks only work with the specific Mac mini they were issued for like for example XP restore disks would? I've been told I can provide my s/n to Apple and for about $30 they will send me the "right" restore disks... anyone know anything about this? Could there be a hardware/firmware explanation for why the install fails like that? PS ran the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test with that restore disk set and it reported "no problems."
    <Edited by Host>

Thanks. Actually I got the Mini from a computer recycling company I work with so I knew it might have problems and that I was taking an "as-is" risk. If the original disks were turned in with it, they'd been lost (that outfit took in huge piles of stuff every day; it was often luck of the draw for me to find something before it would be buried, damaged, etc., and not everyone who worked there had any idea of the possible value of things they received) for me to find things. The disks I got on eBay apparently were separated from the mini they'd been packaged for. An Apple Store rep said I could order restore direct from Apple just by providing my serial number; just wish I'd known that before I went to eBay. Since posting this I've seen another seller specifically claiming that the same-part-numbered-as-mine disc set they are selling will work with my specific type of Mac mini. I have an appointment tomorrow morning at the Genius Bar at an Apple store near me in case they have more suggestions. Will share what I know as things develop.

  • I need a larger hard disk for my mac book pro

Hi my mac Book pro 2.53GHz 13' needs a larger hard disk do you have any suggestion? I'm thinking about a 750/1T but which brand/model works great? I do music production.
    L

For music production, you'll probably want a 7200RPM drive, and all the current 1TB units are 5200 or 5400RPM. Consider the 750GB 7200RPM Seagate:

    hey guys help me

Nobody can.  You did not provide any details.  It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.

  • HT201250 if I used external hard disk for backup time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

If I used external hard disk for back up time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do this, but you should make a new volume on your external disk. Time Machine needs a volume that is only used to store backups, so you can't store other data in the same volume as the one you are using for making backups.
If you want to create another volume on your external disk, use Disk Utility to do this > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Anyway, you should get another external disk to store other files, but if you don't want to, you can create another volume in it

  • Install 11.5.10 on USB portable hard disk media

can 11.5.10 be installed on a USB portable hard disk connected on a notebook/laptop computer. did any one do this? does it works with out problems?
these are some of the doubts i need to clarify.
any response to this will be appreciated
    thanks

I had a friend that did that. I had to do a media recovery on the database when they lost power. The laptop went to battery, but the external USB drive crashed. Shortly afterward, they compressed their laptop drives and put 11i on the primary internal drive. On a 7200 rpm drive, it will be plenty fast for single user mode, even with compression.

  • Separate hard disk for the appliance?

    Hi!
"Create a separate VMware hard disk for the appliance. This is the location where you will store your iPrint files.". Optional. Ok, I understand purpose for separate hard disk for Filr - user files etc., but what purpose does it serve here, with iPrint Appliance? Because, for backup is suggested to create a file and during new appliance install load it. Meaning, iPrint Appliance is probably ok to install in one? Probably is ok to keep all these files in ... general location? Or not? Didn't find anything of this optional disk in backup/restore, either.
    Probably I missed something.
    More thanks, Alar.

Ah, I see. Well I've not tried attaching a second disk at all to the
iPrint appliance so I'm not sure of the affects of adding one or
attempting to detach the second disk. Before detaching, take a look at
where it's mounted. I'm assuming it would still be mounted as
/vastorage, and if so look to see what if anything is stored there. If
it's truly empty then you could likely detach it as long as you also
remove the associated line in /etc/fstab which mounts the second disk.
If you see any files in that location, though, then you'd likely need
to redeploy the appliance from scratch making sure to not attach a
    second disk during deployment.

  • I want my AVI files from Hard disk for FMLE

Is it possible to get AVI files from my Hard disk for FMLE if yes How..?
    Thanks in advance

Not sure what you mean but if you want to use FMLE to stream video from your harddrive I think you also need Camtwist or Wirecast for that. I use Camtwist and FMLE for that. If you for example stream to Justin.tv remember to mute the sound on your channel there or you get a strange loop. It´s kind of tricky to set up a good stereosound for broadcasting and I use two soundcards and a small cheap Behringer mixer for that.
I think it´s possible to play them back from another computer too if the videocard on that computer have some sort of video out port you can hook up to your capture card on your broadcasting computer. You ´d need a capturecard that FMLE recognizes.
You can also just burn a DVD and play it back from an ordinary external DVD player that you hook up to your capturecard. Even works with a VCR if you have one and can get the files over to tape. But as I said you need a good capturecard that FMLE recognizes.

  • Fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac?

What is the fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac (I believe it is currently not possible to use Esata on the Imac).

For DVCam. HDV etc, I'm a fan of the G-raid drives. From personal experience they
are very solid performers. I only had one issue with a new drive that was replaced
next day. They are not the cheapest drives to be found but the build quality
    is excellent. Check out:

  • Where could I buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A)

Does anyone know where I could buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A) (mid 2009)? The hard drives sold in Apple Store are not for macbook pro... Thanks a lot!

At one time Apple use to put an Apple firmware on the drives installed into Mac computer. That is not the case anymore. And even if they did that firmware was just to indentify the drive as an Apple drive. Those same drives would work in any computer and any drive would work in a Mac computer. Same is true today. There are NO Apple Mac drives. Apple uses the exact same drives as any other computer.
Apple uses the exact same hardware as all other computers. Same CPU, GPU, RAM, Drives, DVD drives you name it, it is the same as any PC.
Good Luck but just because you go to a Mac-centric store doesn't mean it is any different then what you would buy some place else, other then it may cost more from one of those Mac-centric places.

  • Format a windows hard disk for mac

    Hi,
I am trying to format an external windows hard disk for use with my new Mac.  I am using Disk Utility.  The disk was NTFS formatted, I erased it into HFS+ (mentioning that the operation was done in less than a minute).  I tried this many times but it still took the same time.  Does not formatting a disk take a long time? Or this is the way it is done in Lion.
    Thank you. (New to Mac)

Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.app (in Mac OS). Open the app.
Select the disk (choose 'erase' if it its formatted already), and format as 'Mac OS extended (journaled). Click 'format' (or 'erase', depending on which option you are given).

  • Driver Intel USB 3.0 Driver for Intel 8 and U/Y Series doesn't work with a specific Kingston USB

Hello guys, just the other problem I'm facing with the 840 G2
I'm working in the MDT image for the HP 840 G2 and I would like to comment you one problem that I found with the USB 3.0 drivers. Based in your webpage, the last HP USB 3.0 official drivers are:
Intel USB 3.0 Driver for Intel 8 and U/Y Series Products
    3.0.1.41 A from 15 dic 2014
I have found that those drivers doesn't work properly; if you insert a Kingston DTSE9 (32GB) the content of the usb will not be accessible randomly. The event viewer will display:
The driver detected a controller error on \device\harddisk1\DR13
To solve this problem you have to obtain the last version of the drivers from the Intel webpage:
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/22824/USB-3-0-Driver-Intel-USB-3-0-eXtensible-Host-Control...
I have all the drivers properly installed and it seems that the computer is working fine, however I'm a little worry thinking if I should update all the driver to avoid possible problem like this one.
If you have found similar problems it would be nice to share it.
    Thank you very much.

  • Transferring LR catalog to backup hard drive for travel?

I plan on taking a photo vacation and want to take along a laptop with Lightroom for processing on the road.
I currently use and process my images on my desktop. LR and the images are all on desktop.
What is the best way to transfer my catalog  (with all keyword and collection data) to my backup hard drive for the trip?
Images are not really a problem transferring just takes time.
Do I use the "backup" mode in LR? or, drag and drop the LR folders from my desktop to my backup hard drive?
    thanks,

    Please note:
When we talk of the "catalog" in Lightroom, it means the database where Lr stores everything. It does not mean your photos.
The catalog (i.e. the database, i.e. the file with the ending <  .lrcat>) does not have to be on the same drive where the photos(the image files)  are.
So you can move your photos to an external hard drive and leave the catalog where it is now. Where is it? Go >Edit >Catalog Settings ? General tab. It tells you the name and location of the catalog.
Before you do any moving of your photos, please note: Lr stores - among the many other things - in its catalog also the location of each one of your image files. This has the consequence that if you move the image files in Win Explorer / Mac Finder Lr does not find the photos in the location stored in the catalog and sends you the much feared "?". How to solve this, see here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS3BC0B0A1-D48C-4271-891D-DA04EF388E29.html
So, there are two ways to move your photos to an external drive:
    a) do it within Lr and Lr will keep on top of the moved files;
    b) If you want to move the image files in Win Explorer / Mac Finder it is best you create one (1) parent folder that contains - in various sub-folders - all of your images. Do this in Lr.
Then - in Win Explorer / Mac Finder - you move the parent folder with all its sub-folders to the external drive. When you open Lr again it will show - in the folders panel - a question mark besides each folder. You then have to do the <Find missing folder> routine:
    Locate missing folders
If a folder is moved in the operating system instead of in Lightroom, the link between the catalog and the folder breaks, and a question-mark icon appears on the folder in the Folders panel.
To restore the link, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) on the folder and choose Find Missing Folder from the context menu.
Navigate to the file path of the moved folder and click Choose.
