Firewire port on my iMac. Need help troubleshooting

I've been attempting to troubleshoot this issue for the past month, with no real solution or or glint of hope!
I'm having issues using my Motu firewire audio interface with my iMac (*late 2006 24" iMac*). Once the unit is connected to my iMac, it starts turning on and off. The same interface work flawlessly with two other macs. I've done the following sofar:
- re-installed audio drivers multiple times
- SMC resets many times (have lost count)
- Fresh new OS install
- Different firewire cables. Even tried the FW800 port.
I'm beginning to suspect the problem is with the power flow out of the Firewire port, since when the mac is shutdown, I still get the same problem when the interface is connected to my mac.
Firewire drives work fine. No problems. So its not a problem with firewire devices not mounting. I'm truly stumped!! Not sure why this is happening. Any info or technical advice is greatly appreciated.
thanks;
John

im having a similar problem the only difference is, the power stays on two interfaces the motu ultralite and the fw solo by m-audio but they dont show that there connected, with both the software and the system, any ideas??? anyone??? can my firewire be fried already? the cpu is almost 2 years old!

some orginial / genuine DVDs not playing in my iMac, need help!

Once your husband copied the movies, did he use a burn software to burn them to a DVD? You need to use a burn software to properly encode the footage so it'll play in any DVD player/computer/TV. So, once the movie is copied to your hard drive, you can edit it in iMovie (may need a converter first to get it into a format iMovie can work with such as MPEG Streamclip); after you're done in iMovie, use iDVD if you have it or Roxio Toast to burn it to a DVD.
And for the OP: Regions are different depending on where the movie was made: the US, Europe, etc. The regions are set within DVD player  - you insert a DVD and the player reads what region it originated in. Please note you can only change regions 5 x; after the 5th, that setting will remain and can't be changed again.

  • Broken firewire ports - boot problems - target mode help needed

    HI there,
I have a 15" macbook pro from 2008 with core 2 duo cpu etc.
It has recently developed the problem of hanging during the boot process with a blue screen, taking around 5 minutes to get to the login screen.
Much research has led me to the solution of removing two files from the SYSTEM > LIBRARY > EXTENSIONS folder relating to the firewire bus (?) and this has solved the issues about booting. (IOFirewireIP.kext and IOFirewireFamily.kext)
(I put on a clean install of 10.6.3 and the screen stayed blue. Removing these two files in target mode fixed this problem.)
There is still a sleep problem though - i.e. the machine does not wake from manual sleep (Apple menu) or if the system sleeps after the time allocated in the energy saving preferences.
There are so many suggestions on the web, it's almost impossible to know what the correct course of action is.
Another strange thing is, is that I can boot into target mode and access the drive via the firewire (400) port from another mac.
If the port were truly broken, how come it still works in target mode?
Is it possible that the firewire interface is not broken, but disabling these two files above could eliminate another associated problem?
Also, is there an online resource, or walkthrough, to eliminate what could be causing the sleep problems?
I would appreciate someone's suggestions on this and thank you for your help in advance!
    Best wishes,
    Torbz

Strangely, after installing a clean 10.6.3 - I've updated to 10.6.8 and the firewire ports are suddenly back and being reported in system profiler (whereby they were not before).
The two files I deleted above have been re-instated through the updates - and all seems well.
I've yet to check the sleep mode problem - but the firewire has at least sorted itself out...
    That's a bonus!

  • Issue Using both Firewire Ports on 24" iMac

I just got a new 24" iMac with the 3.06 processor. I intend to use it with Pro Tools and other music making software. I have an audio interface that is firewire only and an external hard drive (where I store my audio files) that is both firewire and USB. The problem is that I when I use both firewire ports (800 and 400) at the same time, my Pro Tools starts acting up. And I found one post stating that this was a known issue with the 24". But that was back in May and I thought it would have been resolved by now. Anyway, when I use the USB port on my hard drive instead of the firewire, everything works. Also, on my 17" iMac PPC G5 everything works just fine on there, including using both firewire ports a the same time. Finally, I've got the latest updates on all devices involved. Has anyone experienced this problem or have any knowledge of it? Thanks in advance.

I've got a similar problem. I've got a WD external drive connected via FW800 and an Mbox pro 2 audio interface connected via FW400 to my 24" mid 2007 iMac. They both power on (the mbox gets it's power from the iMac) and are recognised by the iMac. However, the WD drive seems to take dominance at some point during start up. The reason I know this is because I was watching the LED on the Mbox light up as I sent it signal from the guitar and then it suddenly stopped lighting up. I tried daisy chaining the mbox to the WD but outcome was the same. Then tried chaining the WD drive to the Mbox (this meant the WD drive was now down to FW400 speed). It worked!!!.............until the next time I started up the computer. The WD drive wasn't recognised by the iMac.
I'm not impressed with the iMac's inability to deal with devices from both it's ports. Why put them on the machine if they can't handle it?
I bought the WD drive to work at FW800 speed and don't want to have to submit to USB 2.0 if I can help it.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks

  • No firewire port on an iMac ?!

I ordered a brand new iMac, and I discovered lately that there is not a Firewire port on it ! How can I do to transfer the contains of my hard disk on my new computer ? The hard disk has only firewire port. The contains of Time Machine is in this HD. How can I do ? Thanks

Very simple, you need a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. The adapter in the US online store is:

  • Need help troubleshooting Kernel panics

    Hi,
I have had two Kernel Panics in two days just now, and another one a few weeks ago. The logs don't help me as I am not familiar with the wording on the Mac side, and I cannot submit the error reports to Apple as it fails, probably because I run 10.5.8 and Apple discontinued suppoort for Leopard or something like that. I would need help trying to figure out from the error message whether it is likely hardware, software, network, etc.
Here are the tope lines of the recent Kernel panic logs:

Some additional information which might help:
MacBook,  2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM
The last two kernel panics happened just as I hit "send" in Thunderbird, so it may be related. I fail to understand how such a simple command would crash a computer though.

  • Need help troubleshooting a crashing iMac

    [yay! my own new thread!]
    About my iMac:
Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz, 4 GB
    What I've done so far:
    1. Run disk utility - checked permissions, verified disk; nothing
    2. Opened activity monitor - nothing out of the ordinary:  1.6 GB memory free, etc.
    3. Opened console - not quite sure what to look for, but there are definitely a lot of files; apparently I don't have a lot of Pageouts
    4. Booted in safe mode; Run disk utility. Sometimes I get an error that is apparently nothing to worry about.
    5. At least once, I forgot I was still in Safemode and it crashed. At one point, expose crashed it while in safemode. I don't use expose often,
    6. Checked system preferences nothing interesting in the 3rd party pref panes
    7. Found files in
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    - some are not apple related but I'm not sure if it's safe to delete
One thing to note / not sure what it means:
    - all crashes are not created equal. Variations include:
    a. spinning beachball
    b. unresponsive windows (can move the cursor/mouse around but nothing responds)
    c. gray screen after trying to restart
    d. a mailbox that doesn't load properly/the bottom part is black with a band of distortion
    - should I unplug *everything* and turn off iCloud on the iMac?
See what happens? [not tossing the machine off the cliff yet...]
    Thank you everyone!
    - Carolyn

    Can't remember, really.
Now it just crashes a lot. in multiple ways.
A new one this morning:  gray screen with the spinning wait thing....(previously just a blank gray screen).
I am starting to wonder if there are major sync issues - too many iOS / old Mobile me / iWorks->Pages / address / mail (including Outlook), too many hard drives attached / time machine, etc.
Things are a lot faster if I log in as a guest and not me.
How do I narrow down the search?

  • Kext causing kernel panic? Need help troubleshooting, please.

    Hello all,
I'm a new face here and have been fortunate enough to never really need support, however at this point, I'm completely lost. First of all I want to apologize if my English is bad, Swedish is my native language.
    My specs:
    MBP 5,1 (late 2008) 15.4"
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,53 GHz
    Memory: Apple native 4GB
    Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B05
System Version: Mac OS X 10.7.2 (11C74) Lion
    Kernel Version: Darwin 11.2.0
    SATA HDD: ST9250410AS Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 250GB
I have a very annoying problem that I dont know how to solve. When I try to boot my MBP normally I get kernel panic before getting to the login-screen. The kernel panic occurs 1-2 minutes into loading while the gray Apple-logo still is on screen.
Booting in safe mode works just fine (wifi, wired network and other critical os x functions works - While gfx-, audio-, spotlight-, etc. kexts are disabled). This problem occurred a few months ago while using the MBP normally (e.g. browsing the web). Since then I have done the following troubleshooting:
    1. Switched to other HDD:s with both Snow Leopard-/Lion set-ups (fresh installs, same kernel panic)
    2. Tried to reinstall from USB (same kernel panic)
    3. Zapped PRAM
My thoughts: Some non-essential component in my MBP is malfunctioning, but since it works just fine in safe boot mode I figure that if I disable/remove the right kext(s) it should boot up fine in normal mode as well? (without the functionality of the component(s) that is disabled)
Im having a hard time to localize the origin of the error since I dont have any experience of interpreting Mac kernel logs.
Maybe you guys have any answers? Ill be eternally thankful for any thought, advice och help I can get!
I have recorded logs from two different crashes:
    Kernel panic #1

However I cant manage to find the panic logs in the library/logs/ or any of its directorys. Ive looked for this logs before and my guess is that they dont get created if the panic occurs during boot.

  • I need help troubleshooting computers not showing up on network

seriously, everything was fine until xmas eve. Now I can't see the computers on the network on a mac or a pc.
Now, when I go to Start/My Network places on a pc the share points do not show up.
Also when I go View Workgroup Computers - it returns an error. In the error it mentions permissions. I've propogated permission, restarted SMB services and restarted twice.
OSX 10.5.1, Xserve, standalone server, SMB services are running, one username and password for everyone with r/w permission, even guests access is turned on, ...
AT&T Netopia dsl modem (bridged mode), Linksys wireless router with ip's assigned to all computers, to a switch that routes to users and two more switches.
note - I can see a few macs on Mac OSX Tiger and Leopard but nothing on the pc's. I can, however, see a unix sever that's on the network by typing \\ServerName in an explore address bar. And at one time I could type in \\Xserve on both macs and pc's but no longer.
    Thanks,
    ctrent

Any relationship to what works and what doesn't?
    no
Could there be a bad cable or bad switch port?
I've thought about that - checked and rechecked
Do you know how to see if there are two momputers with the same ip connected to a network?
Tried swapping a working and a non-working box to see if it's the connection that's stuffed?
    no
    but I just did
I tested an imac using the same connection. It was able to browse the entire network.
I noticed that MacBookPro had tld-internal.com in the Search Domains entry box.
I entered TLDMacserver.com as the search domain and was able to browse the server share points and read and write. (hoorah!)
I think that this is where the problem is - Is there a domain that needs to be set up or is already setup? I don't know of a setting on pc's to Search Domains - is this just a mac thing?
Now, seeing the other computers is the issue. I can only browse 4 macs and the Xserver on a mac but nothing on the pc's.
Is there something in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings that I should know about?
My server name on the left panel in Server Admin is TLDMacserver-com.local.
Under Settings/Network the computer name is TLDMacserver-com
    Computer Name - TLDMacserver.com
    Local Hostname TELDMacserver-com
    Network Interfaces: Ethernet 1
    IPv4
    192.168.0.32
    DNS Name: TLDMacserver-com.local
Anything interesting in the SMB-related server log files on the Mac OS X Server box?I'm not really sure what to look for.
That's one of those cases where digging through the logs looks for oddities.
I would probably have as much luck digging for gold.
Also, probably related to my problem - my logmein.com remote conrol no longer works. I tried deleting the machine from my list and reinstalling Logmein on the server, but it won't install.
    It says:
    Istaller is damged
Installer is unable to open the package.
This is likely due to install framework's runner executable not having he proper ownersip &/or persmissions.
Definitely seems that something got stomped on. Mayhap the disk?
What's the state of your data archives?
for those machines that can browse it's working fine.
    Your backups current?
yes. A firewire drive that's swapped out. They both are backing up right.
Next step would be to boot the installer DVD and verify the disk and verify the disk protections.
    it's just a download file from LogMeIn.com
As soon as it downloads that error pops up and when I manually try to run the .pkg the error occurs.
Up until now I've been able to log in just fine from anywhere.

  • Need help troubleshooting officejet4630 printing problem

I cannot print from my officejet 4630. I encountered the problem a few days ago and I have been working tirelessly to get this up and running again. The problem first started with my desktop, and the following day I was unable to print with my laptop.
    In the laptop:
I have uninstalled and re-installed, I have downloaded print dr. and documents seemed to print sporadically, a half hour after I sent them to the queue.
    in the desktop:
I have uninstalled, and I am unable to reinstall. It seems to get stuck at the network check. Ok, so I unplugged my router to see if connectivity was the problem. It's fine. I was able to get signal back to my desktop and my printer quickly. The signal is strong in both devices at all times (mine is the only computer in the house). So what the heck is going on? I've troubleshooted and I arriving at no clear answer. I'm reaching the end of my rope trying to figure this out, please help asap.

    Hey @mhubbard,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to work with you today with resolving the network communication and printing issues you're experiencing with your HP Officejet 4630 e-All-in-One Printer. I understand that this issue is affecting both your laptop and your desktop. You have also ran the Print and Scan Doctor tools, uninstalled and reinstalled, and powercycled your router to no avail. It is important to note that even though your signal strength for your network is great there is still a chance that your router could be blocking some communication to a printer.
Just so you are aware, when you network a printer there really is no grey area, the printer either works or it doesn't. If the printer doesn't work at all on a network than you may have a defective network card. However, if the printer connects to the network, even if it's an intermittent connection (slow printing, no communication, etc . . . ), it proves that the network card is functioning. Sometimes routers deem the printer as a threat trying to access the network and end up blocking some or all features of the printers network communication. This isn't something that is wrong with the router, it's just doing its job too well.
Now with that being said, I'm going to take you through some troubleshooting steps to get this product up and running consistently for you. Please run through the step-by-step troubleshooting steps below.
    Step 1:  Powercycle the Network:
I know you have already tried this, but there is a special way this should be done. If you haven't already please run the steps below.
1.First, unplug the power cable to your Router
2.Once your Router is unplugged, turn off your printer
    3.Next, shut down your computer
4.After 30 seconds to 1 minutes, plug your Router back in
    5.Next, turn on your printer
    6.Turn on the computer
After a few moments the internet connection will reestablish itself. Check the internet on your computer and ensure it is working before proceeding.
    Step 2: Reset the Winsock:
Please run the following steps on your Desktop computer.
The Network Installation Hangs on the 'Checking Network Environment' Screen
Step 3: Printer Doesn't Maintain Wireless Connection:
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection
Should the steps in this document fail to resolve your issue than proceed to the next step.
    Step 4: Open Router Ports:
There are certain ports on a router that allow wireless communication with the printer for printing and scanning. If you're not sure how to open these ports yourself, please contact the manufacturer of your router to do this for you.
    Open: Incoming (UDP) Ports:
    137, 138, 161, 427
     Open: Outgoing (TCP) Ports:
    137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500
Also, on the router ensure that:
    Mac Filtering should be OFF
    Firmware updated
Firewall may need to be 'off' for testing
Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your wireless communication and printing issues. Good luck!

  • Need Help Troubleshooting MacBook Wireless

    Hello,
I have looked on this forum and other forums about why the wireless is so noticeably slow.
We have an iBook 700 mhz. and now a new macbook 2GB Ram and 2.0 ghz and it is slower on surfing the web than the iBook.
I have read that it might be the intel chip inside, cordless phones or the settings. However, I need to know what steps I can take to find out the real problem.
I have the wireless connection showing a 55 signal strength and no noise with iStumbler. Are there any troubleshooting steps I can follow to get down to the bottom of the problem?
This is my wife's new computer and she is quite disappointed as I am too. We thought this would be much faster. Seems like it should be.
We are running 10.4.7 and my wireless access point is a Belkin F5D6130. Unfortunately, I was given the wireless modem second hand so I have no way of modifying the settings. It worked fine on our iBook without any changes.
    Thanks,
    Randal

    Hello,
I talked with Apple today and they had me run a test on my iBook for connection speed and the same thing on the MacBook. My MacBook was 1/2 the iBook speed. The had me bring up http://www.2wire.com and the speed test is in the upper right corner.
They said it could be the card or my Belkin wireless modem. Therefore, I went to a neighbor that had a wireless signal and the system went to the same as the iBook speed at his house.
Therefore, it appears I will need a new wireless modem/router.
Hope this may help someone else.

  • Need help troubleshooting poor performance loading cubes

I need ideas on how to troubleshoot performance issues we are having when loading our infocube.  There are eight infopackages running in parallel to update the cube.  Each infopackage can execute three datapackages at a time.  The load performance is erractic.  For example, if an infopackage needs five datapackages to load the data, data package 1 is sometimes the last one to complete.  Sometimes the slow performance is in the Update Rules processing and other times it is on the Insert into the fact table.
Sometimes there are no performance problems and the load completes in 20 mins.  Other times, the loads complete in 1.5+ hours.
Does anyone know how to tell which server a data package was executed on?  Can someone tell me any transactions to use to monitor the loads while they are running to help pinpoint what the bottleneck is?

    Some sugegstions:
    1. Collect BW statistics for all the cubes. Goto RSA1 and go to the cube and on tool bar - tools - BW statistics. Check thed boxes to collect both OLAP and WHM.
    2. Activate all the technical content cubes and reports and relevant objects. You will find them if you search with 0BWTC* in the business content.
    3. Start loading data to the Technical content cubes.
    4. There are a few reports out of these statistical cubes and run them and you will get some ideas.
    5. Try  to schedule sequentially instead of parallel loads.

  • Need help troubleshooting Report Query/BI Publisher

    Hi All --
I need some help with an odd issue I'm having with a report query and BI Publisher. The users run this report by inputting a date range, usually by week. Oddly enough, if we input a date range of 06/01/2008 through 06/07/2008, the report runs and BI Publisher renders the document correctly, but if we input a date range of 06/08/2008 through 06/14/2008, the report shows correctly on the screen, but BI Publisher returns an empty document. I thought perhaps it was an issue with the data, but inputting the date range of 06/01/2008 through 06/14/2008 works correctly and the document is rendered with all the data as shown in the report.
I'm really at a loss and don't know how to proceed in troubleshooting the issue. Does anyone know of any log files or anything else to look at to try and figure out why the report isn't being rendered correctly for that one week?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Marc --
The OC4J logs don't show any errors at the time I tried running the report. I did change the output format to XML and saved it for the date range that doesn't work as well as a date range that does work. As foar as I can tell, the only differences is the data within the tags, but I'm no XML expert so I may have missed something. I opened my report template and loaded the xml data first from the date range that produces a rendered report properly and used preview...as expected it worked. When I did the same thing for the "bad" date range, I get the following set of errors, should I move my issue to the BI Publisher forum do you think?

  • Need help troubleshooting: booting problems

I'm a bit stuck troubleshooting and could do with some advice.
A quick backstory: my mid-2010 13" MBP started to refuse to boot and displayed the flashing question mark, so the Geniuses replaced the hard drive connector cable - which sorted the problem for a few months.
So the flashing ? reappeared and I've tried a few fixes but need advice on where to go now, I think it might be a RAM problem.
    What I've tried so far:
I've tried erasing and then verify and repair the HD through disk utility, using the OSX DVD, which came up OK.
    Reset NVRAM
Clean Install: the HD would show up, but would fail after 30 mins; "Install failed... could not copy the necessary support files."
Ran Apple Hardware Test: showed error 4mem/4/40000000 0xabd93398
Took out each RAM card separately, cleaned with compressed air, tried out each one separately in either slot - still get a flashing ? on startup.
Any thoughts on what I could do would be really appreciated. Thanks for any advice!

If the OS installer failed removing RAM will not fix the damage.
The question mark means a bootable OS couldn't be found. You will need to reinstall the OS & see if the Mac stays stable. You may need to do this with one RAM module to see if the other is causing the crash. The AHT message is a RAM error, re-run the test & change modules to see if it is a particular module or slot that causes it.
You can try booting from external disk to try to rule out the internal HD, but that isn't a practical solution for a laptop, it's more to help diagnose where the fault could be.
You could take it to an Apple store to see if they can help, but I doubt there will be any chance of repairs unless you pay. The first visit will be free, but there is a limited amount of testing that can be done.

  • Need help troubleshooting slow startup after installing apps

I'm relatively new to OSX (though not new to computer administration and Unix/Linux) and I need some guidance troubleshooting my slow booting Macbook.
I've got a vanilla Macbook that can installed with 10.5.5 and I've since done the upgrade to 10.5.6. I didn't have any problems until I started installing some heavier apps like the Adobe CS3 suite and MS Office (I know, I should get iLife, but I have an available license of Office.)
Since doing these installs, it has noticeably, but not drastically, slowed the start-up time of my mac. The slow down starts in the blue screen part of startup and is most noticeable as the dock and the menus load.
(I've read about Searchlight indexing, which would make sense since these are both big suites, but it's had several hours of run time to do this and many reboots and it's still a problem.)
I have my suspicions that Adobe is mostly the culprit here, but I'm not sure where to look for start-up logs and configuration info. Are there any apps out there like Start Up Control Panel (www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) for OSX? Are there any places that would be a good place to start looking? I basically want to try to make sure that only the necessary stuff is loading at start-up and and none of that "helper app" crap that was so common in windows environments.

Francine gave you excellent advice about tracking down your problem. Once that's accomplished, see these:
