Firewire ports are dead

My firewire ports seemed to have died. Not only will my Lacie Drives no longer mount, my iPod won't either. The system profiler doesn't seem them. They don't mount on the desktop. However, it seems as if power is still getting to the devices.
I've tested the devices and cables in question on my powerbook. They all seem to work.
Any ideas?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.3 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
Good Luck!
Cheers!

  • Just got the new 2010 Mac Pro and the Mini DVI ports are dead

    Anyone else having this issue?
Anyone know if they need to be "enabled" somehow?

Yes, the adapter does seem to go all the way up to the plastic shell. And the the adapters and displays work fine when driven by either of my MacBook Pros. And there seems to be some sort of connection being made because when the adapter is unplugged, the monitor goes through its typical "I'm unplugged" test mode phases with color screens and so forth, but when I plug it in to the Mac Pro, it goes black.

  • Firewire ports on Cube seem to be dead

The firewire ports on my Cube seem to be dead, in that the Cube is not able to see an external drive connected to either of the ports (and the external drive can be seen when connected to another computer). Is that sufficient evidence to conclude that my firewire ports are dead? Is there any software test I could perform? Is it possible to repair the firewire ports?
I'm afraid it's about time to retire the Cube.

I see a PDF on the top of this search page. And a little lower down is link to a video on removing the board.

  • Dead firewire port

Seems my firewire port suddenly died. I tried plugging in my iSight and it's not detected, and I tried a firewire hard drive as well, and that is not detected.
Any steps I should try on my own before contacting Apple for APP repair?

After installing firmware password protection, I found out that it disables your firewire ports.
So I disabled the password, but my firewire ports are still dead, i can use targetmode, but my mini never mounts, I tried connectiong isight and it didnt work also, I did some research on this and found the code that checks the firmware for this setting.
is located on the file IOFireWireController.cpp
it looks to me as if the security-mode is set to none, once it was set to anything else other than "NULL" value it will still disable the firewire. so i tried to set it to NULL also but no luck. My Firewire is dead, and also my other laptop that had a firware password has the same problem. I've tried:
    altopt+of
    setenv security-mode none.
    rest-nvram
    reset-all
    return.
    Then
    reset the PMU.
    but nothing.

  • Pismo Firewire Ports Dead

My firewire ports are no longer working. They do not show up in the About This Mac. Any suggestions where to begin troubleshooting?
    ELM

    ELM,
You might try these resets in the order presented; disconnect all peripherals first.
    - Reset the PRAM...allow three startup chimes before releasing keys, then test:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    - Reset the Open Firmware, then test:
Boot into Open Firmware by holding down the 'Command-Option-O-F' keys from a cold start while the chime is being played. You will see a command-line screen...enter these commands:
    1. At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-nvram
    2. Press Return.
    3. At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-all
    4. Press Return.
    Example:
    0 > reset-nvram
    Press Return
    0 > reset-all
    Press Return
The reset-all command should cause the computer to restart. If this occurs, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings.
    - If still no success, run the Hardware Test CD (after the resets) that came bundled with new Pismos if you have it.
    - If you boot into 9.x, do the ports appear and can you mount the drive? If 9.x is not on the HD, boot to your 9.x CD, then see if the drive will mount.
    - Can you test your FireWire device on another Mac to verify its integrity?
If all fails, you can buy an inexpensive FireWire CardBus PC card for the PCMCIA card slot. However, if your FireWire device(s) does not have its own power supply, it will not work via the FW PC card. Built-in FireWire ports supply bus power for devices like a FireWire 2.5" HD, but FW PC cards do not supply bus power. You can, however, buy a FW PC card that also has a separate power supply so that bus-powered devices will work.

  • K7N2G-ILSR: Firewire and all but 2 usb ports are gone.

I have the MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard. When I first got it I noticed in my bios I had the option to enable/disable my IEEE 1394 ports. After having problems with my video card I updated my bios to v1.7 and since then I've lost that option all together and have noticed that only 2 of my USB ports work and the firewire ports are not detected.
Is this a known bug? I'm going to try and roll the bios back to v1.4 and see if that restores them. If that doesn't work any suggestions?
Also on occation my USB ports will fail to be started by windows and/or linux.

  • FireWire ports burned out -- what to do?

The FireWire ports on my 4 year-old iMac seem to have burned out. (Reboots with Mac phone support didn't help). So the problem now is that I can't download footage from my Sony handycam, which used to function beautifully with the FireWire. Mac customer service tells me that since the Firewire ports are connected to the logic board, I'd need a new logic board which would run about $800, and it seems crazy to put that much money into a nearly 5-year old computer. Grateful if anyone could suggest a workaround. (for example, would a firewire/USB hub work, or wouldn't that convert the Firewire signal?). My iMac is otherwise functioning fine and I can't buy a new computer just now, but I do need my videos...Thanks for your suggestions!

I think the only longterm solution that makes good sense is the replace the iMac with a new(er) Mac, at least after making sure the FW port is dead. Since you are in NY, you should be able to get to an Apple Store it some point. I suggest making a Genius Bar appointment & taking both the iMac & your camcorder with you. The genius should be able to verify that the port (& not the camcorder) is the problem & you should be able to test the camcorder with a Mac in the store. (Note that you will need a FW 400 to 800 cable for this. It may be worth discussing this in advance with the store personnel, especially if you have to travel any distance to the store.)
Even if you cannot afford a new Mac now, you will have verified the source of the problem & get a good idea of what 4+ years of hardware improvements would get you. This should help you decide what to spend money on now for workarounds vs. what to save your money for.

  • How How can i install Mountain Lion with faulty firewire ports??

Basically the firewire ports are fried on my MBP 3.1  (2007). My mac used to take hang on blue screen and take 10 mins to boot but I solved this problem by installing an ssd and deleting the following kext file...
    /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext
My MBP now boots in under 20 seconds so if anybody is having the same issue then there is the resolotion..
Anyway these are the steps I have taken but failed to properly install ML.
Dowloaded Mountain Lion at least 3 times from the App store to make sure the download wasn't corrupted.
I even tried making a Lion Bootdisk so I can install Mountain Lion on a USB drive (Install ESD.dmg).
I have even tried installing Lion first thinking I would take it one version at a time but gets stuck on boot screen too.
I even changed my hard drive to a new blank SSD drive to see any difference.
Each time I install Mountain Lion or Lion, everything is good until the installer has to restart the laptop.
Laptop gets stuck at the grey boot screen with the Apple logo and the loading circle. Nothing ever happens after.
I always had to use/boot to the Snow Leopard CD so I can restart the laptop back to the Snow Leopard OS and then update to 10.6.8.
I am guessing it is the ML dmg reinstalling the above file ( /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext ) which is leading to the same issue because of the faulty firewire ports.
Is there anyway I can resolve this because its doing my head in and Snow Leopard is old and doesnt support newer software that I would like to use.
Any help would be kindly appreciated. Thanks

    Just some thoughts.
I presume you already partitioned the new SSD drive as GUID?
Is there anything on the new drive at all yet, or anything that isn't already backed up? If not, you could try erasing the drive and then installing OS X from the bootable flash drive installer you made.
Ive tried that and yes it is GUID. Im going to get grey hairs soon and Im not even 30 lol .... yet
I am not going to buy a new logic board as its just not logical (sorry for the pun) I got the mac for free and I want to spend as little money as possible. Im running out of ideas though

  • IMac firewire ports non-functional

A client of mine has an iMac G5 20" and it seems as though the fw ports are dead. I have reset them by unplugging everything for 15min (and more) and it still will not mount an external f/w drive. Is there anything else to check before I take this to be repaired?
    -gl

Boot from an OS X DVD (or CD), Diskwarrior, Techtool, etc. and run a volume check (using the OS X CD or DVD run Disk Utility) - I lost mine but a simple Disk Utiity ran from An OS X DVD found errors - when I rebooted they were all back. Also did it ahile back and I ran Diskwarrior from another partition and it fixed it too! May not be the ports.

  • IRONY: 2 Apple Displays & 1 Firewire Port

I find oddly unsettling that my brand new setup (3.2 Mac Pro + 2x 23" Cinema's) has an obvious flaw. Two Displays means I have two USB / FW hubs built in, yet when I run the cables across my desk and down to the Mac Pro, I can plug in the 2 DVI and 2 USB cables, but one of the FireWire cables is left to dangle since there is only 1 FireWire 400 port on the back. To make matters worse, the cable isn't long enough stretch around front (not that I would want to).
Design flaw? Logistic over sight? Laziness? I sure won't return the thing, but wow this seems odd.

Well, actually there are two ways to look at it, none maybe from my angle. There is only ONE bus and you are just splitting (hairs) to daisy-chain devices. At least the 2008 is now linked to a new PCI Express bridge inside so FW800 is better, but all FireWire ports are running on one bus/channel.
Add a PCI Express card, and that may have multiple ports, but only one (extra) bus.
Then you have problems if you end up mixing drives and consumer electronics on the same bus. And, to make matters worse, there are some problems users experience with the built-in USB hub(s) in the ACD, keyboard, etc.
You don't say what you need to attach, whether a powered hub or 2nd controller would help, or whether best served with SATA drive controller.

  • Firewire ports over??

    Hi everybody
Well, on my iMac DV SE 500 it happened that my external LaCie HD icon disapeared. So I tried to unpluged it and plug it again etc without luck.
So I had the idea to take a look in my Mac System Profiler under the Devices and Volumes tab. Well, surprisingly, no Firewire Ports appears there. Is'nt that stange? So my question about that is : are my Firewire ports fried?
For now I do not have any firewire devices except the LaCie and I assume that it is working well for I hear it spinning and I am without any back-up support and I need advices. Oh! and I took out from OS 9.1 brand new Firewire extensions with Tome Viewer and put those in the extensions folder but apparently without succes.
Someone can help me on this one? Thank's
    Jacques ( Excuse my English)
iMac DV SE 500   Mac OS 9.1.x

    TRy this:
unplug the imac let sit for a while
the lacie power it up and shut it down but don't connect any firewire cables
power up the imac then the lacie; then firewire cable to imac first(always do this anyway) and firewire cable to the lacie last. Just check to make sure the connection to the firewire ports are not backwards.
When you are done take the lacie off the desktop ie apple+E then power lacie down and remove the firewire cable from the imac then the lacie.

  • Disable Faulty FireWire Ports In 10.4.11

my powermac's firewire ports are fried, and it causes all kinds of problems (slow startup, random freezes, computer won't sleep).
    i found this:
    sudo -s
    Password: (enter admin password)
    cd /System/Library/Extensions
    cd IOFireWireFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns
    mv AppleFWOHCI.kext AppleFWOHCI.null
    touch /System/Library/Extensions
which disabled the built in firewire ports, and solved all of my problems...but it also disabled the firewire ports on the PCI card i put in.
is there a way to disable to built in ports, but not the ports on the PC card?
i know very little about this, so any help is appreciated.

Hmmm, are your 10.4 Install Discs more than one?
Just tried my Mac Mini, 10.4.2 Install Discs which is a 4 or 5 set, and indeed AB was a generic icon & small, I believe more resides on other Discs in the set, likely #2.
    Have you considered...
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Firewire port status check

How can I check the status of my firewire ports? I recently purchased and added an external hard drive (SimpleDrive 250 GB) mainly for downloading & burning videos...but ever since I installed the thing, suddenly iDVD, iMovie & even iChat do not detect my camcorders nor iSight cameras any longer. Does iMac have a firewire port status operation that I can run to see if my firewire ports are defective? Or...what do you recommend I do now?

It makes a difference if you have a new iMac Intel, an iMac G5, or something else.
If you have posted on the proper board for your machine, then check out this iMac Intel firewire thread (there have been others, as well):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=445938&tstart=0
    Edit-
You can also run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that came on the grey labeled Install Discs with your machine. Insert the disc and check out the Read Me.

  • Broken firewire ports - boot problems - target mode help needed

    HI there,
I have a 15" macbook pro from 2008 with core 2 duo cpu etc.
It has recently developed the problem of hanging during the boot process with a blue screen, taking around 5 minutes to get to the login screen.
Much research has led me to the solution of removing two files from the SYSTEM > LIBRARY > EXTENSIONS folder relating to the firewire bus (?) and this has solved the issues about booting. (IOFirewireIP.kext and IOFirewireFamily.kext)
(I put on a clean install of 10.6.3 and the screen stayed blue. Removing these two files in target mode fixed this problem.)
There is still a sleep problem though - i.e. the machine does not wake from manual sleep (Apple menu) or if the system sleeps after the time allocated in the energy saving preferences.
There are so many suggestions on the web, it's almost impossible to know what the correct course of action is.
Another strange thing is, is that I can boot into target mode and access the drive via the firewire (400) port from another mac.
If the port were truly broken, how come it still works in target mode?
Is it possible that the firewire interface is not broken, but disabling these two files above could eliminate another associated problem?
Also, is there an online resource, or walkthrough, to eliminate what could be causing the sleep problems?
I would appreciate someone's suggestions on this and thank you for your help in advance!
    Best wishes,
    Torbz

Strangely, after installing a clean 10.6.3 - I've updated to 10.6.8 and the firewire ports are suddenly back and being reported in system profiler (whereby they were not before).
The two files I deleted above have been re-instated through the updates - and all seems well.
I've yet to check the sleep mode problem - but the firewire has at least sorted itself out...
    That's a bonus!

  • Are the USB/Firewire ports powered?

I have an external hard drive that is powered by the USB of my powerbook- and I noticed that the 20" display features usb and firewire ports.
Are they self powered? (the spare ports on the apple keyboard are not- i.e. yu can't charge ipod from them)
    Any advice is appreciated
    Thank you

    The official specifications say:
<< Two-port, self-powered USB 2.0 hub, two FireWire 400 ports and Kensington security port >>
So the USB hub should be self-powered. However, from my experience, connecting the iPod (or any other bus-powered USB device) to the display doesnot work as expected.
Maybe it's because I have all four ports (USB and FW400) occupied, and one of the FW devices is also bus-powered.
