Firewire ports non-responsive

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on a problem I'm having.
Both my firewire ports have power but devices fail to show in iTunes or Finder. I've tried my iPod and my Lacie hard drive with the same results.
I have done the following to try to resolve the problem.
1. reset SMU
2. reset Pram
3. did an open firmware reset (reset nvram, set defaults, reset all)
4. ran hardware test with logic board showing okay
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

FireWire ports have been known to fail. The front port on my Power Mac G5 failed and I had to get it repaired (thankfully under AppleCare at that time). Mine also provided power, but no data connection.
You have done all the things I would have tried except for one. Starting up from a different system to see if that made any difference.
If you don't already have an external drive with a bootable system on it, you can use your Mac OS X installation disc. Start up from the disc to get to Installer. At the first Installer screen (after language selection), go up to the menu bar and select to run Disk Utility, from under the Utilities menu.
Then connect your external drive to the FireWire port. See if the drive shows up in the Disk Utility sidebar. If it still does not appear, there is a good chance you have a hardware issue with the port. If it does show up now, the port is probably fine, and there is some issue with your current system installation.

  • IMac firewire ports non-functional

A client of mine has an iMac G5 20" and it seems as though the fw ports are dead. I have reset them by unplugging everything for 15min (and more) and it still will not mount an external f/w drive. Is there anything else to check before I take this to be repaired?

Boot from an OS X DVD (or CD), Diskwarrior, Techtool, etc. and run a volume check (using the OS X CD or DVD run Disk Utility) - I lost mine but a simple Disk Utiity ran from An OS X DVD found errors - when I rebooted they were all back. Also did it ahile back and I ran Diskwarrior from another partition and it fixed it too! May not be the ports.

  • Firewire port not responsive

I am trying to import vhs video into my Imac using component cables from VCR to my Data Video analog to digital converter, then firefire 800 to 400 to the imac.
All that show up in the iMovie options is the built-in isight camera. The converter works fine on my old G5, but I'd like to get rid of it and go just with the Imac.
Any ideas what is wrong or other methods to import?

reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Am I correct that none of the latest iMac's have a DVD Drive or Firewire port?

Am I correct that none of the latest iMac's have a DVD Drive or Firewire port?

I actually use an external optical drive as all of my family and friends (including the ones in other countries) prefer to get the movies I produce on a DVD they can put in their DVD player and watch on a big screen TV, so I will be using that technology for some time to come. I also prefer not to upload anything as most everyone thinks everything is free to download (steal) other people's content. I've used an external burner for years because the super slim vertically installed drives in iMacs were less than reliable and any media could shift by 1/100th of an inch.
My current (new) external burner is from OWC:

(they have others, including bluray). Mine is quiet, sturdy, and offers several plugin possibilities.

  • Satellite A660 - USB 2.0 ports are non responsive

My Satellite A660 Series Laptop is one month old and has been working fine until now. However, I powered on the machine and all three USB 2.0 Ports are non responsive. I've Shut-Down and Restarted the computer - no change.
In (Windows 7 - 16 Bit OS) Control Panel - Manage Devices - it says that all USB 2.0 Ports are recognised and working. In reality, NO device in any of the three (3) USB2.0 Ports are actually being recognised or working at all - there is no response. Interestingly, the one (1) eSATA/USB combo port is working and responding properly.
    Can anyone help?
Should i just send it backto the shop? Yes it is still under warranty.

    Hey,
    > Should i just send it backto the shop?
No, I think its just a USB driver problem.
In your case I would reinstall the chipset driver from official Toshiba website. Even you have the newest version, try reinstalling it because it contains the USB drivers and maybe its something wrong with it.
After chipset driver installation test it again. If it doesnt work remove all USB ports from device manager and restart your notebook. The USB ports will be reinstalled automatically.
What BIOS version you have installed?

  • Non-functioning Firewire ports

    Help...!
I have a MacPro hooked up to an Apple 23in display. With the display's multi-plug attached to the rear FireWire port, the front FireWire port doesn't work, nor to the ports on the display. The USB ports work perfectly.
The FW ports are obviously connected as they draw enough power to charge my ageing scroll-wheel iPod, but the connection isn't strong enough to mount anything.
If I remove the display's FireWire plug from the back of the MacPro, the front port comes back to life. It's workable, obviously, but does anyone know why I'm having problems?
    MacPro dual 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks for the reply. It's not just the iPod, a Formac 250GB FireWire drive doesn't mount either. Spent an hour or so doing the five Rs with the iPod before I realised it worked fine on my old iMac.
I've unplugged the display's FW plug and I can use both the MacPro's FW400 ports at the same time - I'm just not too chuffed with the front one not working with the display attached. Perhaps the fault lies with the display rather than the MacPro?

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

  • Firewire port not working Mac Mini (G4 1.25ghz)

    Hi,
The firewire port isn't working on my mac mini, I've tried several devices, but none are connecting. I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue and possibly a solution. The only software installed on the computer since the firewire worked last was Apple updates, so maybe other mini's lost firewire somewhere along the way.
    Thanks, and Thanks
    W

This worked from Smokerz in the Power Mac G4 forum:
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
    Works fine now thanks Smokerz!!!!!
also repaired permission and reset PRAM, nothing worked until I did this.

  • Capturing Video on New iMac with only 1 FireWire Port

Using one of the new Apple iMacs, what is the best way to capture digital video footage (Mini DV) into Final Cut using an external drive as your scratch disk? The iMac offers only one FireWire 800 port. Is it advisable to connect the camcorder to the FireWire port and use a USB 2.0 to connect the external drive? Or can you connect the drive via FireWire 800 and connect the output of the camcorder to one of the other Fireiwre ports on the drive? In this instance I am using a Lacie Rugged Hard Disk that has one FireWire 800, one FireWire 400, and one USB 2.0 port.

They often do not play well with other firewire devices on the same bus. And since all the firewire ports on a Mac are on the same bus, it can lead to incompatibilities during capture. On some computers they work fine, on others they collide.
Try it and see if it works for you. If it does, be happy. If it doesn't, you'll have to do the external drive/camera shuffle.
    It goes like this:
    • turn off the computer and all connected devices,
    • disconnect the external drive
    • connect the camera using a FW800 to FW400 cable
    • turn on the camera
    • turn on the computer
    • launch FCP, set the capture scratch folder to the system drive then capture
    • shut down the computer and the camera
    • disconnect the camera and connect the external drive
    • turn on the drive
    • turn on the computer
    • launch finder and move the captured files from the system drive to the external
    • launch FCP and reset the capture scratch folder to the external drive
    • open your project and reconnect the media.
Or, use a different (non-Canon) capture device.
Or, get a computer that has multiple internal drives or has expansion capabilites so you can add a firewire card to create a second independent firewire bus for the camera.
    Good luck,

  • IRONY: 2 Apple Displays & 1 Firewire Port

I find oddly unsettling that my brand new setup (3.2 Mac Pro + 2x 23" Cinema's) has an obvious flaw. Two Displays means I have two USB / FW hubs built in, yet when I run the cables across my desk and down to the Mac Pro, I can plug in the 2 DVI and 2 USB cables, but one of the FireWire cables is left to dangle since there is only 1 FireWire 400 port on the back. To make matters worse, the cable isn't long enough stretch around front (not that I would want to).
Design flaw? Logistic over sight? Laziness? I sure won't return the thing, but wow this seems odd.

Well, actually there are two ways to look at it, none maybe from my angle. There is only ONE bus and you are just splitting (hairs) to daisy-chain devices. At least the 2008 is now linked to a new PCI Express bridge inside so FW800 is better, but all FireWire ports are running on one bus/channel.
Add a PCI Express card, and that may have multiple ports, but only one (extra) bus.
Then you have problems if you end up mixing drives and consumer electronics on the same bus. And, to make matters worse, there are some problems users experience with the built-in USB hub(s) in the ACD, keyboard, etc.
You don't say what you need to attach, whether a powered hub or 2nd controller would help, or whether best served with SATA drive controller.

  • Dead firewire port

Seems my firewire port suddenly died. I tried plugging in my iSight and it's not detected, and I tried a firewire hard drive as well, and that is not detected.
Any steps I should try on my own before contacting Apple for APP repair?

After installing firmware password protection, I found out that it disables your firewire ports.
So I disabled the password, but my firewire ports are still dead, i can use targetmode, but my mini never mounts, I tried connectiong isight and it didnt work also, I did some research on this and found the code that checks the firmware for this setting.
is located on the file IOFireWireController.cpp
it looks to me as if the security-mode is set to none, once it was set to anything else other than "NULL" value it will still disable the firewire. so i tried to set it to NULL also but no luck. My Firewire is dead, and also my other laptop that had a firware password has the same problem. I've tried:
    altopt+of
    setenv security-mode none.
    rest-nvram
    reset-all
    return.
    Then
    reset the PMU.
    but nothing.

  • Faulty firewire port on DV7-3080ca: can't capture video

I have a Pavilion DV7-3080ca laptop, and I cannot properly capture video from my (Canon HV20) video camera, which I connect to the laptop's firewire (1394) port. Regular video can be captured but not without many dropped frames, and HD Video cannot be captured at all. When I connect the camera to the firewire port, the camera says "HDMI Out" on the camera screen, instead of "DV Out" as it should say, so there seems to also be a recognition problem.
Searching on the Internet, I've learned that the problem is likely the Ricoh chipset that this firewire port uses, which is apparently more problematic than the preferred Texas Instruments (TI) chipset that some other laptops use for their firewire port.
Does anyone know if there's a fix for this?  Is it something that HP could fix with a future BIOS update?  I was hoping that it may have been corrected in the last BIOS, but I just flashed my DV7 BIOS with the latest version from the HP web site (F.13), and it didn't help. I've also updated the graphics driver and the Intel chipset drivers; that didn't fix the problem either.
My other alternative, if there is no fix, is to purchase an Expresscard with firewire ports that uses the TI chipset. Does anyone know if that would solve my problem? I don't want to spend the extra $50 if it won't.
Some people speculate that the problem with the DV7 firewire ports is also partly because it shares IRQ16 with several other functions, in which case the Expresscard solution won't work, because I think it's on IRQ16 too.
Any tips would be most appreciated.  I've tried contacting HP via Help chat and email, but neither response even acknowledged that the firewire port's Ricoh chipset is faulty, even though that seems to be common knowledge on the web.

Has anyone tried to capture video with a firewire Expresscard rather than with the faulty Ricoh-chipset-based firewire port that's built in (but faulty) on the DV7 laptop?
It's my last hope, but I'm not optimistic. Some say it won't help because it shares IRQ16 with lots of other functions.  Don't really want to spend another $50 to work around a firewire port that should work properly in the first place, but I really need to be able to capture DV footage with this laptop.
Have tried to contact someone at HP who's familiar with this problem, but no luck.

  • Dynamic Linking fails aerendercore non-responsive.

I sent this bug to Adobe:
    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Dynamic Link Server fails to connect in Media Encoder--aerendercore in non-repsonsive state.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Usually happens after using Media Encoder several times in a row to attempt the render of an AE sequence either by sending the sequence to ME from AE OR by trying to dynamic link to the sequence from ME.
    Is fairly reproducable here
Results: Nothing added to cue or Dynamic Link Server never shows results.
Expected results: For either method to work as designed.
Force killing the process, aerendercore, (which shows as non-responsive in the Activity Monitor) allows normal operation as expected for a while.

I took a look at Apple's source code changes to Cyrus IMAP, which is working with Open Directory. I did a diff against the original 2.2.12 sources using FileMerge and I see that Apple added code to look in Open Directory for user name and pass. So this explains why IMAP works but sendmail does not.
A pertinent question at this point is: Has anyone ported sendmail to Mac OS X Open Directory, similar to what Apple did with IMAP? If so, it would save me from trying to do it myself. I can probably merge the IMAP additions into sendmail, and this would allow Workgroup Manager accounts to send SMTP using SASL authentication.
Alternatively, the easier path seems to be to create a separate database for sendmail SASL, which isn't too far from what they recommend anyway.

  • Bad Firewire Port?

I'm having problems with the three external HDs I use with my MBP; one's a WD Passport 500, the other two are LaCie Ruggeds. I load them with media and use them as scratch disks to edit in Final Cut.
Sometimes... SOMETIMES... they mount. But then, after a while, the computer freezes up... and the only thing that will jolt it back into responsiveness is unplugging the hard drive. Doing this promptly unfreezes the machine and gives the scary "Device Removal" dialogue box.
Most of the time, when I subsequently plug these HDs back in, I can hear them power up, and in System Profiler the computer registers that something is attached.. but they do not mount.
I can no longer edit on the go. HOWEVER, these drives DO mount on my Mac Pro much more easily.
Could this be because of physical wear on the firewire ports? On the MacBook Pro? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I just replied to another thread about this, but the WD drives are no good. I've had lots of problems with them. I changed to Lacie and G-Drive and have had much better experience. I am using MBP and once I switched drives to Lacie and G-Drive, I've had no problems. I wish that Apple wouldn't sell these in there stores! I would think that it's a firmware problem with the Western Digital's and that they could fix it that way.
If you have both your Lacie and your Western Digital's plugged up at the same time, that may cause a problem too.

  • Email empty & non responsive

Hey I recently updated the mac firmware for the intel machines, & ever since I have been un able to access my email account via the mal icon on the toolbar.
I click it & Mail opens but shows NO mails & within seconds becomes non responsive & I have to force quit mail.
Its not that I am unpopular as I had mails in the account prior to updating the firmware.
Does anyone have any clue as to what the **** is going on? I don't want to keep logging onto .Mac via the net. to collect my email.
    Help!!!!

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Now, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running):
    1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears.
    2. With no Internet connection.
    Post back with your observations.
