Firewire ports wont work

My Firewire ports have suddenley stopped working.
I have several firewire peripherals and none of them will work.
Maybe a connection insde?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
Good Luck!
Cheers!

  • What is wrong with my 30" Cinema Display?  The USB and FireWire ports still work, but the screen is pitch black. When you plug it into the computer, it detects that it's a Cinema Display.

When you plug it into the computer, it detects that it's a Cinema HD but the screen is pitch black.
For some reason, the USB and FireWire ports still work.

If you shine a really bright light directly into the screen can you then see a faint image on the screen? If so, that would indicate the backlight has died (hardware failure) and the unit needs repairing.

  • Usb & sdcard port wont work in windows 7

    Hi all,
my usb & sdcard port wont work in windows 7, also i cant install drivers for coprocesor and the sm bus controller,   I have a macbook pro 13" A1278,
I have tryed to install the drivers from the osx cd,  but to no avail it just wont work,
    Please can anyone help

the reason i ask is base system device can be a few differant things but about 90% of what i have seen it show up is the card reader. try to uninstall anything in device manager that has to do with the mic and restart the laptop. this will allow windows to try to find and install the correct drivers. also open realtek HD audio manager and make sure the mic is not muted.

  • Firewire port previously working now not recognized

    Hello,
I understand this particular issue has been discussed at length on this forum and in other places but none of the solutions have yielded any success for me and I see this is often the case for others.  So, I'm posting the question again in hopes that there is an Apple guru out there who has figured this one out.  (All relevant specs below.)
Problem:  Firewire port was working fine for downloading video from a Panasonic PV-GS320 into iMovie 8.0 on an iMac 10.5.8.  Then, suddenly the firewire port was no longer recognized:
    FireWire Bus:
Warning:          Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
The problem cannot be with the camera or cable as I can swap them over to an iBook 10.4 and the camera and firewire download perfectly there.
I have run AHT.  Test results show no hardware problems.
I've tried all of these suggestions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
    http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2011/20110808_0_Firewire800--howto.html
and quite a number of other solutions that involve rebooting SMC and PRAM but no dice.
I'm guessing this might be some kind of driver or software issue.  There's got to be a simple solution to kick this thing in the butt and get it working again.  I'd prefer not to do an OS re-install if I can avoid it.
Thanks much!  Below are the specs:
    iMac:  10.5.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Firewire:  800 Mb/sec

    Hi Tom,
I've had an opportunity to try all of the options listed on those links.  I did omit one however, the Combo Update for 10.5.8.  I hesitate to pursue this one b/c from what I can understand this 1GB's worth of update is basically a reinstall of the OS.  I'd prefer not to take such a drastic action b/c I'm in the middle of editing a documentary and I don't want any other hardware or software to malfunction or alter behavior while I'm in mid-stream.
Let me know if I'm mistaken about this.  As it stands the Combo Update is my last option, otherwise I'm just going to move forward with a dead port.
Just as a sidenote:  the behavior of the firewire recognition has changed.  Now, the system does not recognize the firewire plugged in at all.  I used to get an error message, now nothing.
    Thanks Tom and BDAqua.
If anyone else is reading this post I'd like to hear from someone who has experienced the same problem and found a/the solution.
    Best Regards,
    -J Mann

  • 20" Cinema display with USB and firewire ports not working

I have a new 20" display and was wondering why my USB and fire wire ports at the back are not working. I have an external drive that is powered hooked up to the fire wire port and a no powered piano keyboard to a usb port.
    Any help please

Verify that the display’s USB and FireWire cables are firmly plugged in to the
computer. Do they show in your profiler?
Try different ports in the computer.
Verify that your computer ports are working with other known problem free device.

  • Firewire port not working Mac Mini (G4 1.25ghz)

    Hi,
The firewire port isn't working on my mac mini, I've tried several devices, but none are connecting. I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue and possibly a solution. The only software installed on the computer since the firewire worked last was Apple updates, so maybe other mini's lost firewire somewhere along the way.
    Thanks, and Thanks
    W

This worked from Smokerz in the Power Mac G4 forum:
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
    Works fine now thanks Smokerz!!!!!
also repaired permission and reset PRAM, nothing worked until I did this.

  • Firewire port not working?

tonight, my DVD burner and my Firewire HD are not being detected. I tried to see if system profiler recoginized my firewire port, but All I got was 'No information found.' what can I do to fix this? I need to access this FW hd because it contains all of my music, photos and critical data! thanks!

it seems weird that it just magically started working!

  • Usb port wont work on macbook pro 13" late 2011

    Hello, can anyone help please?
I have 2 usb ports but only 1 is working correctly, the other wont take flash drives or my iphone 4 they wont show in the finder or anywhere on my macbook, however my wd harddrive works fine in the same port.
just to be sure 1 port is working absolutely fine accepts flash drives and every thing this problem is only with one of the ports
This does seem to have happened after i installed mavericks but not sure if this is related

Though all USB ports may not have the same power output, based on what you describe on the 'suspect' port suggests a different issue.  Take the devices that will not work on the 'suspect' port with the MBP to an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians inspect it.
You might try SMC and PRAM resets, but I have my doubts about success in your case:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
These will not harm your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Problem importing video from a DV camera into the new imovie 10.0?  I have a Sony DCR TRV17 connected via Firewire port that worked in 9.0.9 but not under 10.0...

I have a Sony DCR TRV17 that I used to pass through VCR tape video via Firewire port to my Mac Pro under Imovie 9.0.9 without an issue.   Now under Imovie 10.0 the video shows in the import window, I can start recording yet when I stop recording the recorded clips do not show up anywhere.  The movie file I'm creating still indicates that I still need to import video.   Anyone having similar problems?

    Hey Dave,
I had this issue only once before but was lucky enought to find it was a specific event causing the import to freeze. It took me some time to isolate the problem though. I would recommend letting it sit there for some time before you try any troubleshooting. Larger libraries can take long periods of time to update.
This is a good thread for this issue.  I would first try removing the iMovie.plist as elikness mentions.
    1. Open Finder
    2. Click on "Go" in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Go To Folder on the dropdown menu.
    4. Type "~/Library/Preferences/" in the text field and click Go.
    5. Find the com.apple.iMovie(some number).plist file and move it to Trash.
Quit and relaunch iMovie to see if this took care of the issue before attempting the next step. If you're still having an issue then you can try what I needed to do which is isolating the problem event.
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Go to the Movies folder. You should see iMovie Events here.
If you have a larger event library I'd recommend renaming the iMovie Events folder to say, "iMovie Events COPY". Then create a new empty folder named “iMovie Events”. When you launch iMovie 9.0.9 all events will be missing at this point. Quit iMovie if it is open. Then you can either drag each event from iMovie Events COPY to iMovie Events or you can select and drag several at a time. Each time you drag an event folder back into the new iMovie Events folder launch iMovie 9.0.9 to see if you are having the same issue. Wash and repeat until either you have found the problem event or you have imported all events.
If you find the problem event you can reimport the clip from iMovie 9.0.9 by going to File > Import > Movies and navigating to that events iMovie Original Movies folder to find the clip.
    Hope this helps!

  • New 2011 MacBook Pro Firewire Port Not Working with Focurite Saffire 24 DSP

The firewire port powers the Saffire 24 alone, and the device shows up in the system profiler, but I can't see it in the Sound devices menu... I have updated all of the Focusrite drivers to version 2.2 so I need to ask this board for solutions.

i am having the same exact problem. However, I've never had a Focusrite Driver installed previously. I just bought the Interface and installed the software. It downloaded the newest version of the software to install.
If it also installed the previous drivers, how would I unistall those?

  • Firewire Ports Quit Working

    Suggestions please.
Firewire drives that have always booted are no longer recognized at the firewire ports. The drives are confirmed perfect on other computers. It's not a drive issue. Nothing radical changed, just one day it no longer showed up. It's like something just turned off the firewire ports.
Is there anything hardware or OS that could simply shut off the firewire ports, or does this sound like a motherboard issue?
    Thanks in advance!

Could be hardware related, but look at these links.

  • Firewire 400 port wont work

my issue is... my fire wire 400wont read any firewire 400 device, but my 800 port works fine. however, e wheni route my f 400 devices through my 800 drive, or port, the 800 device is ultimately disengaged ( removed) by the system.
i can understand that a 400 port may be wear out but why would the dv cam or other device, routed through an 800, force the 800 device to shut down. in this case i am uising a power book 15 inch, 1.5 gig, with a lacie porsche 250 gig external 400 firewire ( wont read at all) and a lacie 800 firewire 200 gig drive.
seems to me that since the 800 reads fine, that a 400 device routed through it should be okay too.
    any helpwould be greatly appreciated.
also the system profiler doesnt recognize a 400port, but does list an 800 port.
    thanks eric

FireWire ports can be reset. Shut down the computer, disconnect all peripheral devices, remove the power cord and the battery. Wait twenty minutes, then restart the computer and check the port. If it still doesn't work, reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) according to the instructions for your specific model.
If neither of these steps help in your situation, then you will need to take the machine in for service.
    Good luck!

  • Firewire Port not working, URGENT help please¡¡¡

Hello People, i´ve just got a new Mac Mini  last week, and i´ve been trying to get my Alesis MasterControl audio interface, and is just a complete mess.
This happened right after i´ve upgraded to 10.8.3 so i don´t know, the weird thing is that if i connect my old iBook to the Mac Mini the FW800 port works, but everytime i connect the audio interface, nothing happens, also the drivers from alesis, are up to date. i first thought about the port of the Mixer went bad, but it has 2 and non of them works, also thought about the cable but the same cable works when i connect my iBook, and the mixer is not bus powered, it has it´s own power supply.
Needless to say i´ve already done the usual reset PRAM, turn of the Mac unplugged for 30 hour to reset the bus. etc.
This is the usual firewire only system log that i get:

  • IMac FireWire Port Not Working

Hi guys, my system is a 24" 2.8GHz Intel-based iMac. Whenever I plug a device into the FireWire 400 port it powers the device but the iMac doesn't see the device - it doesn't show up in Disk Utility. There are no problems with the devices as they work perfectly with my other Macs. Any idea on whether I can fix this without taking it to an Apple Store? It seems like a Firmware issue.

    Hi DrRGrant
First reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
    +2. Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
    +4. Release the power button.+
+5. Attach the computers power cable.+
+6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.+
Then if that doesn't work, give this a go: > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).+
+3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.+
+4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.+
+5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.+
