Firewire problem (the old 'Warning: unable to list firewire devices')

Hello everyone,
I am having a very big problem with my 13" Macbook Pro since yesterday. I took it to work and hooked it to a RME Fireface 800 audio interface we have in there, and for some odd reason it didn't recognize the interface. After a few tries, it suddenly came alive. I did the recording session as usual, turned the notebook off and brought everything home. Today, I hooked it to my own RME Fireface 400, and one of the firewire ports on it wasn't working - I plugged on the other and started audio playback. After a few minutes, the audio stopped and the host connection problem led the Fireface has turned on. AFter this, I couldn't get the fireface to be recognize on its own - more on this later.
I went to system profiler and got a 'WARNING: Unable to list firewire devices' message. I already googled it and it seems I am not the only own having this problem. I already clean PRAM, SMC, ran disk utility to repair disk and disk permissions and nothing has worked. HOWEVER, one external HD (firewire) i have is working just fine on this same firewire interface. I also tried daisy chaining the Fireface to the Hard disk, the later being connected itself to the Macbook, and using this method the interface works. I also tried the interface on another computer and it works just fine - so the problem lies on my Macbook Pro.
Now, I went to the Console application to see if there was any error messages, and in fact there are plenty. I got a bunch of 'FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: Bad selfIDs, issuing bus reset (retry 2)' and then 'Missing self ID for node 0!'. Also got some 'Firewire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: 4403 resets in last 3 minutes'. Also 'SPFWR ERROR: Firewire bus may be unstable. Other Firewire devices may be present.'. Right now, If i plug the interface and look for something on the console, I get nothing. I only get something when I look on the System Profiler.
So, obviously, there's a problem between my interface and the MBP. Anyone has ANY clue on what to do? BTW, the interface don't work when booting to bootcamp using W7 (it is also not recognized). But like I said, it works when daisy-chained to the hard disk or in another computer.
Thanks a lot,
Ivan

Does the RME device have its own AC power supply brick? If so I would suspect that it is failing and the system is pulling too much juice from the MBP. When you have a drive daisy-chained the interface is able to get the juice it needs from that drive and not from the Mac itself.
If it has no power supply brick you will have better luck with a powered hub.

  • Warning:Unable to list FireWire devices.

My firewire drives don't appear on my computer. in system profiler I get this message Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices. they do work on my laptop with all the same cables.

I've tried all of that, but still having problems -- cannot access either of my firewire ports with either of my dv cameras. This all happened after I had taken my iMac in for a tune up. Here is the long process to try and get the problem solved. I brought my iMac in to diagnose the problem and they replaced the logic board. (Of course, they didn't have the part in stock, so I had to lug my iMac back home and return in 5 days.) It still did not work, so I called Apple Care, who had me try a lot of different thiings and they he said it was a hardware problem. I brought it back to the Apple Store and one of the "geniuses" plugged in his test drive and my iMac recognized it. He convinced me to buy a new 9-pin cable and try the other firewire slot. That didn't work, either. I called Apple Care again and spent at least an hour on the phone. He said maybe it was my camera. This is not the case, as my PC recognized my dv camera device, using the same firewire cable. They could not resolve the problem and told me to take my iMac to an authorized Apple Certified repair store. Am I the only one still experiencing this problem? Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

    Hi try this...
reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

Oh, you cannot use a computer whose only disk drive is the target of a an OS X cloning operation regardless of what software is used for the clone. You can, however, use the source drive except if you try to clone using Disk Utility.

  • FireWire warning: unable to list FireWire devices (red warning)

    Hello dear Apple Community,
My last (fifth Apple Computer indeed) which is recent (iMac alu 24'' 2,4 ghz refurbly bought 3 weeks ago) shows me signs of unusual lack of reliability.
This computer works pretty much fine but I regularly encounter a FireWire issue with it after a few hours of work. Generally after a long period of standby I cannot mount my FireWire devices so I have to reboot the iMac. I must precise that my peripherals are not in trouble (I have tried several cables and external drives), but the computer must be.
I have tried to use another user account and I have also reinstalled entirely the OS.
The funny thing is that when the FireWire is not responding I cannot put the computer in sleep mode!
Each time I reboot it reworks again (until when is the question).
It bothers me in a way I never had to restart my previous Macs (the reason why I switched several years ago from MS to Apple Computer Inc.).
I begon to think I am the only one with it: either FW works 100 % or 0 % but not like my CPU.

    Good news everyone,
I finally found the origin of my problem: it comes from the RAM.
    When I use 1 slot with 1GB, 2 slots of 1GB each or 1GB + 2GB it works fine.
When I put 2 times 2GB it doesn't work because of the difference between the memories (the same bus but not the same manufacturer). I will try buying an extra 2GB RAM in order to have a correct dual channel.

  • What are the differences between VISA and the old serial calls in regard to device communication?

Recently, I had to communicate with a piece of equipment, (a Yokogawa UM-330 Green Series Digital indicator). The device was configured to communicate using RS-485 protocol. I purchased a RS-485 to RS-232 converter in order to communicate with the device via COM 1 on my PC. When I attempted communication in Max, using VISA read and write commands, I could not get the device to communicate. I even attempted writing a stand-alone VI to establish communication. Still, no-dice. Finally, I resorted to using the old serial call VIs. This made the device jump up and say hello. What I really would like to know is, has anyone experienced problems like this when
attempting to communicate via seral with other devices using VISA, and if they have, what are the reasons for these problems? Is the problem specific to devices using RS-485? Or is the problem more device-specific?

We have been using serial devices for more than ten years (proprietary acquisition cards and third party devices) using a variety of languages (BASIC, CVI, LabView...). I always found that the main problem are correct configuration of the serial port and cabling: once these items are correct, it's easy to obtain some reply from your devices (maybe not so easy to obtain the CORRECT reply or to interpret it...).
I've used both old style VIs (vith LV 5) and VISA with success on the same devices: still I am a little confused about VISA. Maybe would be better some explanatory document by NI about VISA and serial communication.
Anyway, my approach is at present: don't bother about control panel and/or MAX configuration of the port: open the device and configure i
t as you need at the beginning of your application.
Next use simple VISA Write and VISA Read VIs.
Be sure to set the correct timeout: some devices are extremely long in replying (for example: an Infratek wattmeter takes as long as 45 seconds to send measures if you ask to it an harmonic analysis...!).
Proud to use LW/CVI from 3.1 on.

  • HT4946 I want to sync my iPad with an older backup, not the old created when I plug mt device in.  Following a problem with my iPad I have lost all my data from a game app and I am trying to retrieve it

Following a problem with my IPad and restoring it, I have lost the data in one of my game Apps ... I can see in ITunes/ pref my iPad back ups and want to try to sync with an older back up to get the data back.  So how can I sync with an oldera back up?

In that same window - the one where you see your backups - click on the box at the bottom that say -Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads form syncing automatically. Then click OK and quit iTunes.
Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side under the devices heading and select - Restore from backup. A window will pop up from which you can select any of the backups that you have for the iPad. Select the backup that you want to restore from and then go agreed and restore the iPad. Sync with iTunes when you are done.
Remember that when you restore from a backup - you restore everything in that backup to the iPad. You cannot selectively restore content. It is all or none.

  • I have moved the mobilesync backup file as my C: is full. Whenever I delete the old mobilesync file and connect a device, iTunes rebuilds mobilesync in its original location. Can I stop this?

My C drive is full so I moved the MobileSync back up file to another drive using "junction". Problem is now that iTunes rebuilds MobileSync backup file in its original location on C drive. Any ideas how I can stop this?

i also just move my library to a NAS. i suggest you do this:
launch iTunes and point iTunes media folder location to the volume/shared folder on NAS. quit iTunes.
copy the iTunes folder from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the NAS.
launch iTunes while holding option (⌥) and click on choose library when prompted. select the iTunes folder you just moved to the NAS.
you must make sure the volume/shared folder on the NAS is mounted on your desktop before launching iTunes but from now on the media folder location should stick (it does for me).

  • In system profiler it says "unable to list firewire devices"

I have been trying to figure out for days why when I hook up my camcorder with a firewire that all that comes up on my screen is the isight camera and not my camcorder. I have tried everything. I finally went into the system profiler and checked my firewire bus and it said it was unable to list firewire devices. My computer is only a few weeks old. Do I need to take it in or is this something I can fix?

Any word on a solution? I also have this problem. My Panasonic DVX100AP works great with my MacBook Pro (10.4) but when I try to use it with the same version of Final Cut Studio (5.1) on my new iMac with Leopard, it's not recognized at all. It wouldn't recognize in iMovie 08 either. I then checked the system profiler and found the "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices." message.
I called AppleCare and they had me try and connect my MBPro via firewire for target disk mode. Sure enough, the MBPro's hard drive mounted fine on my new iMac via firewire. So the firewire port is fine.
The rep suggested that I contact Panasonic as she believes it's an operating system issue and that Panasonic needs to offer some sort of software solution (driver?) to fix this. I've contacted Panasonic and am waiting to hear back from them.
If you have any tips, please let us know.

  • Stumped: PM G5 FireWire Bus--Unable to list FireWire Devices

I have a nearly four year old Power Mac G5. My firewire ports were working fine a month ago before 10.5.8. Today I went to hookup my video camera to download some tape into iMovie '09 and it did not recognize the camera. A quick check of system profiler:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
I have tried the following to fix in this order:
    1. Reset Pram (commandoption+PR)
    2. Reset Devices by (commandoption+OF)
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
    3. Repaired Permissions
    4. Reset PRAM
    5. Reinstalled 10.5.8 combo installer
I still cannot get the firewire bus to work. I am open to ideas. Someone suggested removing the PRAM battery but I have been unable to figure out how to do that.

I ended up unplugging computer for 5 minutes and re-plugging in and this seems to have solved problem (although I do not know why.)

  • Unable to list FireWire

I cannot mount any FireWire attached peripherals, when I check FireWire in the System Profiler I geth this warning: unable to list FireWire devices.
    How can I fix this?

If I wanted RAID5, I'd be using either a dedicated FW800 PCIe; or move to SATA controller.
Mixing consumer electronic devices and hard drives on the FW bus - there is just one controller for all FW ports - is too much noise and interference.
I thought 2009 offered only FW800, so you have to downgrade, and you are using a hub? And never daisy-chain please.
You may not need more than 75MB/sec, but any of today's drive will easily deliver that as their minimum average. And all that 'chatter' on 800Mbps bus rather than a 3Gbps SATA bus.
FirmTek Port Multiplier 5-drive case, or Highpoint RocketRAID 2314 RAID5 controller.

  • For the old time ColdFusion developers.

I have a venerable ColdFusion 4.5 server, oh how I look forward to
replacing it with a new server - but that is still some months into the

Anyways, I have not looked at this server in a year.  Needed to do
something on it today and find all CFM code on the server, including the

The most likely cause of this problem is that the server is not

    necessary.

This is a Solaris 8, Unix installation of ColdFusion 4.5 Professional.
I am not an administrator on this box so I do not have any permissions

when my support ticket finally gets to such a sysop, I know they are not
going to know much about ColdFusion. Can any of the old hats on this

    asking me.
    TIA

4.5.  Yikes.  I feel dirty even reading about it ;-)
Um, I only ever used 4.5 for about my first six months as a dev... CF5 came out then and we jumped to it as soon as we could.
I googled CF "An error occurred while attempting to establish a connection to the server" and came up with this:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/server_archive/articles/cf_timeouts_and_unresponsive_requests. html
So it sounds like the error is a symptom of a CF restart after too many timed-out requests?
