Firewire Question; Charging only?

I'm confused about the specs for the nano. Apple says it can charge through firewire, but can it transfer the songs (and pics etc) via firewire also?
Cheers and thanks

Though USB is theoretically faster than Firewire 400, in real life it only achieves about half it's peak speed. Consequently, USB2.0 is regularly trounced by Firewire 400 on both Mac and Windows. One of the reasons for this is that USB uses the CPU to manage data transfer between devices, resulting in greater overhead for each transfer, while Firewire is peer-to-peer.
Add to this that Firewire connections are more reliable, OS X can be booted from a Firewire drive (or iPod) and Firewire devices can be daisy-chained while USB devices cannot, Firewire comes out the clear winner.
Now if only Apple would support Firewire a little better on the iPods. (nano can charge only, Shuffle only has USB, and the iPod only comes with a USB cable)

  • Can I use my Firewire wall charger?

I know that the new ipod does not support firewire charging/transfer into the computer, but is it possible for me to use my Firewire Cable and plug it into, from the dock, my Firewire wall charger?

This is in regards to the charger, not a computer connection. Unfortunately, a firewire connection will not update an Ipod. I wish apple would've included this feature in the new Ipod because the only fast connection I have on my windoze box is firewire.

  • Is my firewire car charger now obsolete?

I have a firewire car charger from a 3G iPod. I was curious if it would work with my 6G iPod classic or do I need to but a new one? I wasn't sure since now all the iPods charge and sync off a USB 2.0 instead of firewire. ANy thoughts would be helpful.

Yes. Although the Classic only syncs via USB, it can charge via firewire.

  • Using IPOD off Charge only (no battery)

    Hi there,
Just purchased a new car and want to mount the IPOD on a cigarette lighter charger kit, but I want to know if it's possible to remove the battery and have the unit operate on charge only?
Two reasons: 1) I want the IPOD to auto off when the car's off, and 2) I don't want to use the battery unnecessarily.
So my question - can IPOD run off AC charge only, sans battery? Or must the battery be installed for it to switch on et-al?

SInce you have a new vehicle, why not do it right and get an automobile integration kit for the iPod?

The iPod will charge, turn off, turn on, play/control thru the stereo, connect & disconnect automatically when plugged in.
No need for a cigarette lighter adapter or FM transmitter.
    01) I want the IPOD to auto off when the car's off
This happens when the car is shut off. The power to the cig lighter gets momentarily interrupted and pauses the iPod (which them goes to sleep in a bit).
    2) I don't want to use the battery unnecessarily.
If you are using the iPOd, it is not unecessarily using it.
Also, if you did take it out the battery, you could not use the "portable" player anywhere except plugged in.
[n]can IPOD run off AC charge only, sans battery?
No. Even when it is plugged in, it uses some battery.

Downloaded new iOS for iPhone 5. Now the handset is running hot, keeps freezing on different screens, won't charge on official charger ( only charges on crap poundland one) and battery is loosing 1% every two minutes! I've closed all apps and reset the complete phone but no luck. Any one know what else I can try apart from a new phone?

I have done a factory reset at 45% battery. After the reset it's still hot and at 35% now

  • My iPod won't charge on a wall charger, only on the computer. I used the same cord for both though. I used to be able to charge it with a wall charger, but now suddenly I can't. I've even used other wall pieces. Nothing seems to work.

My iPod will no longer charge with a wall charger, only the computer. I know it's not becuase of the wall piece or my cord, since I also use the same cord for computer charging, and the wall piece seems to work with others devices. It worked a couple of weeks ago, then suddenly quit. I think it may be something to do with the inside of my iPod where the charger goes. I find it really inconvient to always have to use the computer to charge my iPod. I believe I have a three year warrenty on my iPod, but I wouldn't think it would cover this problem. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    - Try another cable.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Bring the wall charger

If you have a three-year warrany it is not from Apple. The standare Apple warrantyis 1 year and y can purchas an extended warranty that give y a total of two years. You can check your Apple warranty coverage hee:

  • FireWire is the only way to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?

As a followup to my last post a moment ago tonight 1/30/08:
Is it true that I need a FireWire cable to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?
If so, the Apple salesperson is wrong.
He told me last Monday that purchasing the new iLife 2008 (that contains iMovie 2008) would allow me to use my current USB cable.
Given I see NO FireWire port on my new MacBook Pro (bought in 8/2006), I don't see a solution.
Note the camera, an HD camcorder (the Canon HV20) did NOT come with a FireWire cable; it only came with a USB male plug on one side of the cable and the other is a small square-like male plug that connects to a female port on the Canon HV20.
    Solution?
    Thanks for any suggestions, Daniel

The USB cable is for importing still photographs. Not video.
The firewire 400 cable you need is one that goes from the 6 pin full size male connector to the small 4 pin form used for DV.
The cable plugs into the camera in a socket behind a plastic flap near the eyepiece. Its marked HDV/DV. The other end plugs into the MBP on the right-hand side. 4th from the back.

  • Droid 4 No longer able to use USB for Charge Only

I received the big android update yesterday and now my phone no longer gives me the option to plug in my usb cable for charge only.  It only offers me, Mass Storage, Media Device and Camera modes.  Is the connection for charge only listed somewhere else?  I like being able to charge my phone but still listen to music and none of these options allow that anymore.

There is a discussion about this on the Motorola forums.  The option really has gone, it's not hidden anywhere.  Note that USB WILL charge in any of these modes, and if you connect as Media Device, your card is still available to the phone and you can play music (just did this to confirm)!
The issue on the Moto forum is for those who want to charge their phones using a computer at work, where the company/agency policy forbids mounting a disk from a personal device on a work computer.  Previously, Charge Only allowed that, now any of the available choices will mount the phone as a disk.

  • Connecting USB as "Charge Only" no longer possible after update?

    Hi there,
I just ran the update this morning, and no longer have the option of connecting my USB in Charge-only mode. Is there any way to get this feature back? Certain apps (such as Audible) won't work if the phone is in PC mode. Any suggestions? (And why on earth would you remove a feature like that? Very frustrating!)
    Thanks!

This is something that ones have asked in the Past.  I have answered in this Kind of Way the Charger that Came with the Phone was Designed and met to Charge it.  No other Device other than a O.E.M Motorola Charger or Style of Way. This is What Motorola hopes that one's will do and it will have better results for the Phone in the Long Run.. I agree with Motorola and i have been a Motorola Owner Since the 1990's..b33

Why are you using an old charger on your new phone?
I understand the desire to 'waste not, want not,' but companies now-a-days make things to work just about exclusively with the accessories meant for each specific item.
I'd just buy an extra USB charger.

You won't be able to change your rescue email address until you can answer your questions, you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to upadte your rescue email address for potential future use
