Firewire reader

Lightroom can't import from firewire card reader. PS,Nikon Capture, RSP have no problems with the reader.
Windows Vista
AMD 6000+ 3GHZ
2gb DDR2

Hi Butch,
Here is your solution from the Read Me:
Windows Vista Compatibility
Windows Vista is a brand new operating system from Microsoft and has not been available in its final form long enough for Adobe to fully certify Lightroom for use on Vista. Adobe is working hard to finalize support or Vista as quickly as possible and will deliver appropriate software updates over the launch period. Lightroom 1.0 will install and run on Windows Vista but Adobe cannot guarantee the quality of the software experience until final testing is completed. Known issues for using Lightroom 1.0 on the Vista operating system are listed below:
Lightroom CD and DVD burning tools will not currently function
Importing files directly from a Camera or Card Reader may not function properly. Please
copy files to a local hard drive via the operating system before importing the files into
Lightroom
This may not be the answer you wanted but until the next release.........

  • Sandisk extreme firewire reader not working on new MBP models(unibody))

    hey all,
so I have the sandisk extreme firewire CF reader since 2008. It works great on my 15" Macbook Pro2.2 (C2D 2.16ghz)
Recently(actually in march) I purchased the new thunderbolt 15" MacbookPro(2.2GHz).
At first the firewire card reader works fine on the new MBP. But somehow in May it stopped working(running SL). The CF card wouldnt mount, in System Profile it wouldn't even display the device. Even after I installed Lion it still wouldnt work. The only way for it to work is to daisychain it onto a firewire external harddrive and hook it up to the macbookpro.
It's super weird. I've contacted sandisk's web support(WHAT?! only web support but no phone, for such a big company?!), they said it was use the card-reader was due to power issues and told me to contact Apple to resolve the issue.
I later on tried the card reader on numberious mac's. Turns out that most Unibody machines wont work with it.(the weird thing is, when i just got my Thunderbolt unibody, it worked perfectly fine, for a while) But back on my old Macbook Pro2,2 from 2007(which is currently running OSX 10.6.8), it's works like a champ.(going to install 10.7 Lion and see how it goes)
And at the meantime I donno whether it's the card readers issue or not?(sandisk wouldnt replace the thing for me)
So anyone got any experience or insight of the situation?
    thanks
    PS.
To make things worse, Sandisk discontinued the extreme firewire reader,(they do have the expresscard reader, but the new 15" dont have a expresscard slot)
So now we're left with those stupid slow USB2.0 card readers while the size and the speed of those flash memory cards are getting faster and bigger each day.

I'm pretty much giving up on this issue.
I just found a very rare new lexar fw800 reader online for $80. Hope it works.
fun fact: the SanDisk fw card reader works on the MacPros, new MacMini's/server, even the thunderbolt display w/ the fw800.

  • SanDisk Extreme CF Card FireWire Reader

    Hi.
When I import files to my Mac, it doesn't copy all the photos. The FireWire CF Card reader mounts. I can see all the photos in the CF Card. But when I drag all of them, it says it's copying but not everything is copied. I have to repeat the process until all the files are copied.
Does anyone know about this issue with a FireWire CF Card reader with the latest Snow Leopard?
This only happened with 10.6.4 and onward.

    Since no one's answered...
I didn't know Sandisk still made this thing. I beleive it came out in 2006 or 2007. A quick search on Sandisk's site, shows no driver or firmware updates, mentions "OS X 10.1" (I saw it, but can find the link), and only mentions " all Capacities - 2, 4 and 8GB." So the info seems a bit out of date, which corroborates the age of the product. [This post on the Sandisk forum|http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Readers-adapters-and-all-other/Sandisk-Expre sscard-reader-for-eXtreme-CompactFlash-Cards/m-p/189160/highlight/true#M286] infers that the Firewire readers were discontinued, although that seems not to be true.
That said, does the issue happen with all of your CF cards or just one of them? (Or some of them?) Are the cards fast enough for the extra performance of the Firewire reader? (IOW, if they worked on a USB reader, but have issues with the FW reader, then perhaps they cards are too slow? I'm just guessing.) Or maybe even the cards are worn out. All flash memory will eventually wear out. Are these older cards? (More than 2 years old?)
It likely is a compatibility issue with 10.6.4, but I don't know of that many non-pro photographers that used a Firewire CF reader so don't hold your breath waiting for an answer here. If you can't get an answer from Sandisk, then you might have better luck in a photography based forum like [DPReview|http://www.dpreview.com>, especially something more pro oriented.

  • Sandisk Firewire Reader freezes

I have a Nikon D300 camera and use Nikon Transfer 2 version 2.1.1. I shoot in Raw, usually about 200 images in a session, and use Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8. I use an 8GB Sandisk Extreme III CF card and a Sandisk Extreme Firewire CF card reader. Problem is, recently my uploads have started freezing after 30 or 40 pictures, meaning I have to restart Nikon Transfer. Previously, using the same gear, my uploads were fine. Can anyone help?

I found this thread because I'm having a very similar problem
For me it's a Lexar firewire card reader and a Drobo. I have the Lexar reader connected to the Drobo and the Drobo connected to my 27" iMac (Oct 2010) both using Firewire 800. I can connect the Lexar and put in one card, but when I eject that card and try to put in a different one it brings the Drobo offline and I get the error that I hadn't ejected it properly. I then have to reboot the Drobo (power off and back on) before it will read a card again.
this just started happening recently, but I'm not sure if it was 10.6.7 or something else.
    anyone have any ideas?   thanks!

  • 10.5.8 on G4 - firewire read/write fails silently, corrupting data.

I've already posted this problem on another board here
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2565228&tstart=0
But it seems more relevant to this forum.
I've recently encountered this problem which caused me to lose a lot of data. The setup is mac mini g4 + external firewire hard drive from Freecom.
What is happening is that read/write operations do not result in copy fidelity. Here's a terminal log to illustrate:
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ cp another.avi another1.avi
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ ls -lh another*
    -rw-r--r-- 1 kaitlin staff 176M 2 Sep 11:48 another.avi
    -rw-r--r-- 1 kaitlin staff 176M 2 Sep 12:07 another1.avi
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ md5 another.avi
    MD5 (another.avi) = 6eedf37d80b81f61f0c4a8f71dfea57c
    ariel:Freecom FW 1TB kaitlin$ md5 another1.avi
    MD5 (another1.avi) = b8cffac964d494279a508f11151ee529
So basically the original and its copy have different hashcodes which means they're not the same file, so I can't trust the firewire. It does this consistently with any file read/write operation to/from any destination. The machine does NOT behave like this with external USB drives or the internal drive.
I've got two computers, both G4 1.5 GHz of the same era (Mac mini and Powerbook 15"), and the same symptoms appear on both machines, as well as when hooking the drive up to a FW800 port.
I tried connecting the drive to a friend's Intel Mac Mini, and it does NOT exhibit this behaviour. So I'm suspecting it's a recent software update that caused the drive to fail, since I have used the same firewire disk for a few months without any problems.
I've reverted to MacOS X 10.5.0 and the problem goes away. Then I re-did the update to 10.5.8 and tested it - the problem comes back. It's present on any firewire device I could test on (including a 3rd gen firewire ipod).
So basically, firewire on 10.5.8 seems broken on a G4
    - kaitlin

You seem to have done a good job of proving that the Firewire drivers in 10.5.8 don't work properly on your model of Mini. I don't think there's a UNIX solution to that problem. If the drivers are incompatible, only Apple can fix them, and it won't.
If any firmware updates were ever released for your model, make sure you have the latest one.
The only other thing you could try that you might not already have done is to do a clean install of 10.5, then run the combo updater (not a series of intermediate updaters) to get back to 10.5.8. That procedure has been reported to solve strange problems on occasion.

  • Card reader works on 17 inch PowerBook but not on 12 inch

I have a Compact Flash Card reader (Zio!) that works on my 17 inch PowerBook, but on my 12 inch it does not show up on the desktop when a card is inserted.
I have another card reader (Belkin) that works on the 12 inch but it is twice as large and uses a cable. The Zio! attachs directly to the USB port.
There is probably a driver on the 17 inch that is making the card reader work. Is there a way to locate this.
I didn't have any luck finding a Macintosh driver on line.

    PowerBook G4 17 inch, PowerBook G4 12 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Tiger/Panther

I went ahead and reset the Open Firmware along with the PRAM and PMU.
It didn't show in System Profiler on either PowerBook. I think I'm going to let it go. A card reader that attaches directly to a USB port without a cable will also get in the way of the other ports.
I have the Belkin USB card reader that reads any card. I'm going to be upgrading to a Sandisk Firewire reader just CF cards.

  • Daisy chaning firewire to import or just use USB?

Two options for importing/downloading video from a camcorder to an external drive.
    1. connect the camcorder to the firewire 400 port on the external hard drive, and then connec the external hard drive to the macbook using the other firewire 400 port.
    2. connect the camcorder to the macbook using firewire and then connect the hard drive to the macbook using USB.
My concern - won't daisy chaining require the data to go from the camcorder to the macbook and then back to the external drive? Wouldn't it just be easier to have it route though to the USB?

Daisychaining will work fine unless your camera is a Canon. They do not share Firewire very well.
Firewire is a peer to peer protocol, so data can go from camera to hard drive.
If you have an AVCHD camera, either will work, but Firewire is faster.
If you have a miniDV tape camera, you must use Firewire.

  • Firewire to usb2 adapter

Is there a Firewire device that converts to usb2 to allow faster syncing with a G4 iBook?
    Lewis

I'm afraid there's not. This question gets asked frequently on the iPod forum from people with only a USB 1.1 port wanting to try and connect a recent USB enabled iPod via Firewire.

  • Firewire to transfer data

I have a 30 pin FireWire from an older iPod, will it work to charge my iPhone and transfer data? Or will "fry" my iPhone, anyone?

thanks for the feed back, mine charges from the wall, I just don't want to ruin my iPhone by tring to transfer data from my iBook g4. It' a not that big of a deal, but you all know how much fast it is with firewire.

  • IMac firewire issues...

    Hi all
I'm wondering, after having recent problems with using a Metric Halo Mobile I/O and a USB hard drive at the same time (massive latency issues, crackles, etc. in Logic Pro 7), if anybody has any more information on it.
I read that there is only Firewire bus on the iMac that I have and that is the problem - is there any way around this or is my second Firewire socket just a waste of time when the Mobile I/O is connected?
Any thoughts welcome! Or, of course, feel free to point me in the direction of any previous discussions I've missed.
    Thanks.
    Steve

Most (all?) Macs have only a single Firewire bus, but that doesn't stop me, or others, from using a FW audio interface and a FW hardrive together.
Your post says you were using a USB hard drive, that's totally different from Firewire.

  • Firewire issues?  Cannot Eject anything firewire..

So.. anything I connect via firewire, cf card in a firewire reader, external firewire hard drives, ipods.. will not eject.. when I try to eject any of these items I get a message saying "The disk ___ is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again" ... I have no applications running and this applies to all my firewire devices.. is it possible the whole firewire system is no good? or possibly a corrupt preference in the system? any thoughts? I have disconnected all devices and tried just one at a time thinking that maybe one particular device was causing the problem but it seems to be system wide..

Okay.. so the cd was actually not hard to eject, I have found if you hit the eject button during startup it will usually spit out the disc and it did.. so I have it out now. Without a disc inserted the eject key on the keyboard will open and close the drawer. But I am still unable to eject any drives, ipod, etc.. and actually.. I needed to install a program for something else and the disk image that was created from the dmg file is now on my desktop and my computer will not allow it to be ejected. Any other thoughts? The computer works fine otherwise with no apparent problems.

  • Firewire port & power

    Hello All,
Did Apple alter the power configuration for the firewire 400 ports? I have an adapter (iFire??) that I use to run an old set of the round HK speakers (originally for an old iMac. The adapter takes power from the firewire port and also plugs into the sound out port. It worked fine on my old G4 PB 1.5 and it does work on my wife's new black MB but it doesn't work on my brand new MB C2D.
Any thoughts. The firewire port does work in syncing an old iPod and runs an old iSight camera. Should I have this looked into??
    Thanks....

It would seem so. When I moved from my PowerBook G4 over to my new MacBook Pro I had the same problem with my iFire. At least you know it's not just you...
Looking around the forums it seems like the power output has dropped on the new systems. There are quite a few postings centered around problems with hard driving getting power from Firewire.

  • Can I use my Firewire wall charger?

I know that the new ipod does not support firewire charging/transfer into the computer, but is it possible for me to use my Firewire Cable and plug it into, from the dock, my Firewire wall charger?

This is in regards to the charger, not a computer connection. Unfortunately, a firewire connection will not update an Ipod. I wish apple would've included this feature in the new Ipod because the only fast connection I have on my windoze box is firewire.

  • No Firewire 400 on the new Mac Pro's

So anyone out there have experience using Firewire 400 to 800 cables with audio interfaces? Are there any known performance issues?

Hi. I have a firewire 410 and noticed it causing kernel panics either starting up or shutting down I installed the latest update drivers and the problems subsided every once and a while I'll get a panic when I turn on/off the firewire 410 while starting up or shutting down my mac this however this doesn't effect performance it runs great! just watch when you power up the firewire.

  • Is using a firewire a solution for mounting ipod
