Firewire Recording Interface recommendations

I'm looking for a Firewire interface to input about 8 to 12 channels from a band into Logic Pro. This Presonus Firestudio Project (8 channels for about $450 after rebate) looks reasonable but nowhere does it explicitly mention being compatible with Logic Pro.
Will it work?
Any other recommendations or better deals?

Maybe another good alternative in that price category could be the Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 (http://www.focusrite.com/products/saffire/liquidsaffire56/). To be honest, I don't have experience with that particular device, but I own the Saffire PRO 10 (a 10 input firewire audio interface that has been removed from their current product list). It works fine in Logic 9.

  • Firewire Recording Interfaces

    OK...I'm ******...
In the last week I've bought 3 (THREE!!!) different firewire recording interfaces and NONE (see zero) have been able to work in Windows XP under Boot Camp. (Presonus FireStudio Project, Presonus Firestudio, & M-Audio ProFire 26x26)...***!
I installed it on my friend's computer running XP and it worked. I installed it in Leopard and it worked. I'm pretty sure the problem is Boot Camp. What I don't know is WHY?!?! Why can't I use firewire interfaces with Boot Camp running XP? Is this Apple's lame attempt at convincing the audio community to not use XP? [sarcasm]
Really though, I've spent over $3000 on this laptop and interface and I'm wondering if I'm the only one having this problem. Anyone out there know how to get it to work? Does is even work?

I have yet another thread on this I started, to try and aggregate the info:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1542562&tstart=15
I just now got off the phone with technical support -- they were very friendly, but the bottom line is they said they don't know and can't help, that they won't provide support for this case.

  • Recording Interface Recommendations for 10.7.5?

I recently upgraded to 10.7.5 (IMax). My M-Audio recording interface does not have an upated driver (which was causing output sound issues), so I'm on the hunt for a new interface. Any recommendations for a small, desktop unit for $200 or less? I don't need a big complex rack unit, but would like quality recordings of guitar and voice. I use garage band and logic pro 9.
    Thanks much!

Deleting Safari and reinstalling it will probably not solve your problem. If you have not deleted Safari yet, please do not do that!
First, just try holding down the shift key while opening Safari. This will prevent it from trying to open any pages that were open when it last quit. Your problem could be nothing more than Safari re-opening a page that was open from a previous browsing session.
    If that doesn't work, see:
    Eliminating browser redirects and advertisements
Go through all the tests there, and if they indicate that you may have adware installed, proceed to the adware guide it refers you to.
If you have already deleted Safari, just hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode, then reinstall the system. Installing right on top of your existing system will replace any items that may have been deleted or damaged, and will leave all your other apps and documents alone.

  • Firewire kext not loading. FW recording interface drops out

    Macbook pro 7,1
    OS X Lion 10.7.5
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 Firewire recording interface
At any time my interface disconnects from the macbook. I then have to shutdown and wait 2 minutes before the interface will connect again. I have used other interfaces and the same thing happens, but not when these interfaces, or my own, are used on other macs.
I can see that AppleFWAudio.kext is not loaded when the intereface is connected. Only the standard OHCI kext loads automatically. I'm guessing that this may affect the stability of the FW connection under high load or for audio purposes.
I am a new mac user, and also not a coder of any sort, so terminal is beyond me. I need to know if there is a simple way to initiate a kext (which you should be able to do in my opinion), or if someone can provide me with the code i need, in full, to paste into terminal. A shortcut for this, or permanent solution would be nice too.
    Thanks

I'm having almost the exact same problem, with the exact same equipment, only I just upgraded to 10.9 Mavericks.
    Late 2011 MacBook Pro
Focusrite Saffire Pro- 14 (cuts out and now will not connect at all)
AppleFWAudio.kext says "not loaded" in System Report
    Any leads?
The only reason I know to look at the FireWire driver is from following the Focusrite troubleshooting tips.

  • Audio Output with firewire audio interface issue

Hi, i have a quick question that maybe someone here can answer for me. I originally posted this in the OS X forum but someone recommended that I may get better help here.
I have a PowerPC G5 with Mac OS X 10.4.11. I do a lot of home recording and use a Presonus Firebox Firewire recording box. I recently picked up some new monitor speakers that I run the outputs of my Firebox to and I use the Firebox as my output sound device in my system preferences.
Everything works pretty well unless I touch one of the volume buttons on my keyboard (which I tend to do out of habit pretty often). If I do press one of the buttons the volume dips way down and I have to pump my speakers and firebox volume up all the way up to hear them. If I do this, and then happen to put my computer to sleep when I awake the computer the volume is now at an extremely high level until of course I press one of the volume buttons on the keyboard.
The big problem is I have twice in the first two days of having my new speakers turned them way up and later in the day awoke my computer from sleep mode and had itunes or a dvd BLAST out of my speakers at a ridiculous volume.
My question would be is there some way in os x I can disable the volume buttons from being used if i am using a different output device? OR is there a better way for me to set my system up in my system preferences?
It was suggested in another forum that I look into the help for the Firebox unit instead of the mac so I have started to do this as well. I just thought that because everything works fine UNTIL I touch the computers keyboard it seems like the computer is making some drastic change in how the sound is being output, so I thought I'd try to find an answer here as well!
Thanks so much to anyone in advance who has any sort of help with sound preferences and or settings!!

This is a very good point! Thanks for your response.
I do realize that I have multiple volume controls going on here in a chain. First my computer, then the Firebox interface, then my speakers have volume knobs...
But what I am seeing is when I first press a volume key on my computer (even if it is the VOLUME UP key) there is drastic lowering in volume. Only until I put my computer to sleep, and awaken it does the volume return to a normal level.
It seems that when I am pressing the volume on my computer it is activating something on the mac's end... or changing the way the sound is being output.
Again all of this could be avoided by me not pressing those 3 keys on my keyboard... but old habits die hard! so if there was a way for my mac to give total control of sound output over to my firebox that would be best.
any more help is greatly appreciated!

  • I need a cheapish firewire audi interface.

My MOTU 828 has developed an annoying, intermittent fault. After about 1.5 hours of use, it stops accepting input. It doesn't matter which inputs I use, the machine is effectively dead until it has been switched off for an hour or so & re-started. Not good for live use & rather frustrating for studio use.
I have a good technician who should be able to fix this, but as I live in the UK & we are in the middle of the Christmas/New Year festivities, I won't be able to get hold of him for at least another week, maybe longer.
Consequently, I need a small inexpensive firewire audio interface. (USB might be acceptable as this is for live use rather than studio recording) My needs are simple; one electric guitar & one electric cello are the main instruments I run through Logic & MainStage. I can live with stereo output.
Does anyone have any recommendations for such an item?

Motu 828MKII and Mk3 works fine here!
you need to send your interface for repairing...
    it is a old model?
in any case the sound is pretty good... so I suggest to check your power supply and use a UPS to correct the Voltage...
be sure to have a stable 220 or 100 volt input!
I remaind that the new Ultralite Mk3 is buss powered and new Traveler Mk3 too... they are perfect for live.. you don't need to use external power supply!

  • Firewire audio interface shuts G5 down instantly! :(

    Hi all,
We recently got hold of a refurbished PowerMac G5 (1.8 GHz), and want to use it for recording. But basically, an audio interfacing product called the Duet (by Apogee), which is a little firewire device without its own power source, will shut the G5 down as soon as you plug it in, and if you try to boot up with it plugged in, the computer won't start at all. The G5 is fine: it's working and not damaged... and I don't think it's to do with any other of the devices we're jacking into it.
Why might this be? Is it something to do with power, or the Firewire version? The Duet box does say you can't use it with a non-Intel processor, but I think that's irrelevant here, especially as I've already got it working with an iBook G4, which is of course pre-Intel. I've tried both firewire ports on the G5 and the same thing happens.
Any suggestions? I want to understand this so that if I buy another firewire-enabled interface, this won't happen.

I had a problem with a firewire port on my G5 Quad, using an Apogee Duet, not sure what caused it but the port stopped working. The cure in my case was to leave the power unplugged for 10-15 mintues. Unlikely this will work for you, but best of luck.

  • Firewire audio interface comparison question

hello, i been comparing interfaces and have a few questions. some of them are 24bit/96khz and some are 24bit/192khz. im looking at 2 brands in my budget.
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-Firestudio-26x26-Firewire-Record ing-System?sku=241848
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Focusrite-Saffire-Pro-26-IO?sku=241135
because im new to recording im not sure i would even hear the difference between the 96khz and 192khz. big numbers looks better on paper but i could be wrong. im hoping someone may have compared these already and have info for me to guide my purchase. thanks for any help

They can take advantage of the higher sample rates
Can you hear a difference? I could probably find a dozen web pages that say it's possible and another that say it's not.
I would use the highest sample rate I could, but I would not base a buying decision on 96k vs. 192k unless the other features I were interested were identical.
Recording, Mixing, and Mastering technique can trump hardware.
    As an example, go here:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/BBPages/History/History.html
and listen to the Real World sample, and then the Shine sample. One was recorded with a $30 interface, the other with an (at the time) $800 interface.

  • Hey guys can garage band work w/ a recording interface

hey i just wondering if garage band will work w/ a recording interface

By recording interface you mean a digital audio interface that does A/D D/A conversion then yes the Mac will work with just about every usb/firewire interface made.

  • Using Firewire Audio Interfaces w/ GB3

    Hey all,
Thinking of picking up a firewire audio interface for a few live performances my band and I are doing...I'm thinking of picking up an Alesis iO|14 or iO|26 and using my macbook for it. I'm curious on a few things...in garageband, will each intsrument have it's own track in GB? Also, what are some realistic file sizes for 3-4 minute songs with 4-5 individual tracks?
    Thanks, and all the best,
    Jared

will each intsrument have it's own track in GB?
    yes
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#maxnumrecordabletracks
what are some realistic file sizes for 3-4 minute songs with 4-5 individual tracks?
GB records uncompressed audio which takes up about 10MB/minute/track

  • Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 or Motu Ultralite firewire audio interface

    Hello one and all.
Newbie here so please bear with me as I realise this topic has been covered in lots of various ways before.
I work in a theatre and spend my time creating sound effects, soundscapes, editing pre recorded music and A/V work. I'm currently upgrading our pre, live & post production equipment.
You can see I've gone for the iMac 2.8GHz & i'm about to receive Logic Studio 8. I'm looking for a firewire audio interface as I want to link up a midi controller to it (Edirol pcr 300) and also connect to our Allen & Heath GL3300 mixing desk. I'd like to try to, "future proof" our options (i.e differing i/o options) as we never know what recording/playback needs are around the corner. I've tried to research audio I/O's as much as I can and I've ended up with a choice of 2, Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 or Motu Ultralite.
Any views, reviews or ideas greatfully received.
    Thanks

I've done installation work for theatres/theatre groups. Reliability is a nr. 1 priority. I suggest you take a hard look at the Metric Halo 2882.
I like my MOTU 828 mk2(it always works), but my experiences with the MOTU Traveler (will often go berserk if you inadvertently pull the FW plug) and the MOTU 896 HD haven't been very favorable. The 896HD will give you a full blast burst of noise whenever you switch it on. Not good in a theatre where the amps are normally left at full throttle. Also, I had a lot of failures/technical problems.
The 2882 is a bit more expensive, but worth every cent. And the technical support is second to none.

  • IPad recording interface with built in speaker

Are there any simple recording interfaces for iPad like iRig that have a built in speaker?  I hate using headphones and I want something simple, not a professional setup (like an track dock where I have to connect powered speakers,etc)-I can do that on my iMac.  Something that is portable that is simple to plug a guitar into.

Hi Bellet & Welcome to Apple Discussions,
The easiest way I know how to record simple audio (of the types you describe) through your PowerBook's internal microphone is to download and install a free app called Audio Recorder.

  • IMac FireWire Audio Interface keeps disconnecting

I'm having an intermitten issue with my iMac, which worked (and still works) fine with my IBM based notebook. My firewire audio interface keeps disconnecting, it works fine for a while (could be anywhere between 5 mins to 2 hours) before completing not giving any output, it doesn't switch back to Core Audio during this time. However, if I turn in off and on again, it's fine again.
    Any ideas?

  • Multi channel firewire audio interface

Hello, Is anyone using a multi channel firewire audio interface with a mac mini? eg alesis miltimix?

No issues. You'll probably want to invest in an external 7,200 RPM Firewire drive though since the Mini only has a 5,400 RPM SATA internal drive.
I used it with both TIger and Leopard as well as Logic Express 7.2 and Logic Express 8.
OS X supports it right out of the box so I didn't even need to install additional drivers.

  • IChat AV doesn't work with M-Audio Firewire audio interface

I saw similar topics to this but none dealing with a Firewire audio interface and none with exactly the same problem.
Every other piece of software I use works with the M-Audio Firewire Solo, except for iChat AV. When it is the selected output device and I start a video chat with someone, I get just horrible, loud static when the person on the other end speaks.
Running 10.4.10 on a Macbook Pro (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).
Does anyone know of incompatibility issues with iChat and Firewire interfaces?

In Audio MIDI Setup (In applications/Utilities) the setting for my Mic is 44100khz 1Ch 16bit.
The Internal Audio connection also shows up at 44100Khz 2Ch 16bit
Are you looking in the same place or in the device itself ?
I would set it in the Audio MIDI Setup and then make sure it responds in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab.
Once the Blue bar moves to at least halfway there I would then check iChat > Preferences > Video Section to see if the green bar under the Vido pics is moving.
