Firewire stop functioning after 10.4.7 update

Hello all,
I have been bitten by one of those update bugs. I ran software update this morning on my Powerbook G4 DVI. Eventually, I got the machine to restart after about 20 minutes of nothing. Everything ran fine for the most part until I tried to connect an external DVD burner. The drive is a Lite-On Lightscribe model that ran just perfectly well before the update. After the update, no luck. In fact no firewire device works on the machine despite the firewire drive showing up in the System Profiler. I have tried 2 different Macally Firewire enclosures and a first gen 5 GB iPod to same effect. The enclosures work well if I use them in the USB port. Sadly, I have only USB 1.1 on my machine and that speed is insufficient for my use.
Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean the cache files? If so, I've never have. The only cache files I routinely delete are Safari's. For troubleshooting startup issues, I rely on:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805 and

In the six years I've been running this machine, the only problem I ever had was a corrupted HD that I couldn't erase or reformat three years ago.

    Thanks for your reply,
    I 've checked that thread.
It seems that since then, OKI has acknowledged the issue and has instructions on their site
(which I had followed during setup, so the printer was working until now)
    http://www.okidata.com/mac-mavericks-driver-support
When removing the OKIHC004.plugin file, I get this message
You need to install software to use this printer. To install the software, choose Software Update from the Apple menu. If the software for your printer isn’t available in Software Update, contact the manufacturer of your printer.
Another issue is that on OKI's site, my model is no longer listed when searching for drivers to download!

  • Itunes minplayer (Ctrl+M) stopped functioning after the 2 latest updates!!!

    Hi all!
I have been using iTunes for about a year and loves the functionality both for listening to music and specially the radio channels.
BUT since the 2 last updates the miniplayer doesn´t work.
When I switch to it using Ctrl+M iTunes just dissapears, it´s only shown in the taskbar, WHY?
The mini-mini player works fine (just discovered it reading this forum) but i want to be able to se wich song is playing without having the whole player visible.
Anyone who has a solution for this please post an answer!
PS. Anyone who knows why the radio-group "Americana" has disappeard? DS.
    Best regard / Hanpe

I wonder if it is your settings in:
    Edit>preferences>Advanced>General
-Minimize iTunes to the system tray.
There is an article on shrinking iTunes and the mini player here:

My MacBook keyboard and track pad stopped functioning after pairing an Apple wireless mouse and keyboard. Any suggestions?

I deleted the mouse by selecting it in the bluetooth options and clicking the minus tab. I went ahead and reinstalled OS X right afterwards. Right now I am having to use a USB mouse and keyboard. I disconnected both prior to start up. I get a widow that shows a demonstration on how to install batteries into a wireless mouse only way to pass that screen was to reattach the USB mouse. Then with a fresh startup no resolve.

  • My distributed form has stopped working after Acrobat did an update the form no longer appears in my tracker.

I had a form that auto collected data through Adobe but it has stopped working after my Acrobat X Pro did an update.
The form no longer appears in the tracker. How can this be fixed? I am using Windows 7.
It would appear that since Adobe are going to be closing the Workspace area in January 2015 that when
Acrobat did an update the ability to connect to files in the Workspace has been removed.
Is there any way to reconnect the file back to the Tracker?
Has anyone else had the same problem?
Adobe don't seem interested in helping as this question has been posted for three days and yet no response.

First and foremost thing you can do it is that reset your Firefox and after that change it to safe mode. This may be happening due to venerable links getting downloaded.

  • Help! The secondary click on my trackpad for right and left bottom corners stopped working after 10.9.3 update??

MacBook Air 11" 2013...did the OSX update for 10.9.3 on 5/17/14 and my secondary click on my trackpad just stopped working. Checked the system preferences and tried the other corner found it doesn't work for either bottom corners for secondary clicking. It will pull up the secondary click menu when I have the "two finger tap" option selected, but I don't use that one at all, it's not a natural function for me.
I tried doing a hard reset 3 times and that didn't do it. Then I reinstalled the combo update for 10.9.3 and that didn't work either....
    ... ..any ideas??
    -lost without a secondary clicker

The full release of 10.9.3 is available from App Store now. You can re download the full version from your Purchase tab in App Store. After download there will be Install OSX Maverics in Applications folder. Before installing OSX on top of the one on your system, copy the a install aoSX Mavericks to your external drive or any location. You can copy it to Applications folder for reinstall after that if you want.
The new download will be 10.9.3. Before doing so, please try to boot into safe boot, by holding shift key and power on. Try your secondary mouse click to see if it work. If it is the same, then it will be driver corruption, try reinstall will help.

  • Remote App on my iPod has stopped working after 7.0.3 update

Remote App used to work well, instantly connecting to my iTunes library (V10.5.2 on OS X 10.5.8), but after updating my iPad 4 to 7.0.3 it has stopped connecting.
I have re-started my Airport router as Apples tech docs suggested, and re-started the machine that the iTunes library is on. Neither has helped. I have also turned sharing on and off in iTunes a few times but nothing allows the iPad to show up under devices as it did previously.
The iTunes library will share to other computers on the same network running 10.6.8 and 10.8.5.
    Under devices nothing is shown.

Found the problem. The iPad was connecting to my guest network rather than my main network as it is supposed to.

  • Mail app has stopped working after 10.9.4 update on July 4, 2014

Mail is totally dead.  It does not connect to the internet.  Each of my email accounts has the exclamation triangle next to them.  No new peripherals or devices or USB connections were added after the update.  The system worked before the update, and the same system stopped working (Mail app so far) after the update.

In your opinion Apple was doing a garbage job, when in fact it was Intego that trashed your Mac. That's all it is capable of doing.
But now I have no virus protection.
This is a common misconception. OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple. Ill-conceived "anti-virus" garbage convey no benefit and as you found out, can simply prevent your Mac from working as it is designed to work.
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Keyboard shortcuts stopped working after 10.5.8 update

    Hi everyone,
I'm having problems with my keyboard after I updated to 10.5.8. More specifically the CMDOPTRight combo used in Firefox and Textmate (and possibly others) has completely stopped working.
I've checked it with the Keyboard Viewer and whenever I press this combo nothing happens. Strangely enough, when pressed in any other combo these keys work fine. I have installed no new software, installed any other updates or changed any existing keyboard combo and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do next.
It's not the end of the world but any suggestions would be very gratefully received.

It's alright, I've managed to create a workaround using Quicksilver custom triggers.

  • External monitor stopped working after 10.6.7 update

I have a MacBook Pro, model identifier MacBookPro6,2 with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M.
When I updated last night from 10.6.6 to 10.6.7 I stopped being able to use my Dell S2409W external monitor.
I have tried resetting the pram, resetting the SMC, booting with extensions off.
When I plug in the cable to the external monitor the Mac screen goes blue for about 0.5 second and re-appears but nothing displays on the external monitor; a second monitor is not listed in the Display preferences and the monitor reports that it is not receiving a signal.
I don't see anything in the system.log when I plug or unplug the monitor cable (I'm not sure if I should).
At random intervals while the external monitor cable is plugged in the screen goes blue for a half second and then re-appears.
The screen does not go blue if I wiggle or flex the monitor cable.

I see this in the windowserver.log after reboot, login with shift-key, and the external monitor connected.
There might be a clue here but I don't have anything to compare it to since I haven't collected these data when the external monitor was working.
I'd be curious to see the same data from the windowserver.log for somebody else with a MacBook Pro with an external monitor connected that does work.
You can view this log with the console application located: /Applications/Utilities/console.
If you are willing to share these data please reboot, and hold the shift-key down when logging in to disable extensions (thanks). If you look at the time just when the desktop appears when you end up looking at the windowserver.log you'll be able to see the windowserver starting up about 10 seconds prior to this time.

  • Scanning using HP 7510 stopped working after App Store HP update on 10/23

I am still using OS X 10.8.5. Last week I installed an update after a notification from the App Store that there was one for my HP Photosmart 7510 all-in-one. Now I can still print but cannot scan to the computer. I have used HP Scan 3, Image Capture, and Preview, but none can start a scanning session. The 7510 is connected via WiFi, and I have a suspicion that may be part of the problem, but it has worked fine for a year.
I have seen many reports that Mavericks upgraders have had problems with HP scanners. I intend to upgrade to Mavericks, but I was hoping to find out about my problem first. I am convinced that once I upgrade I will lose contact with the scanning function of my 7510, at least until Apple or HP address the Mavericks issue. My all-in-one is only one year old and I am reluctant to give up on it yet.
Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

baltwo: Thank you for waking me up. I shut down the printer for the first time in months and went on a fruitless search for an unused USB cable. I did unplug the printer because of your recommendation to reset the printing system. When I restarted the thing, it worked! I am back to normal, scanning wirelessly, all computers and apps.
Without your suggestion, I would still be fumbling. Thanks!
